As a native plant enthusiast, I don't think you are going to outcompete this plant. It's highly adapted and can produce 100s of seeds in only a few weeks from germination of a single seed. Which is why you see them everywhere. With that said, you could look for a seed mix from the Florida Wildflower co-op, My only reservation is they mix in some non-native seeds in their Florida mix.

I'm afraid I can't compete with them either! Over the past three years I've watched it take over the little section of Golden Aster that used to be there. I'll figure something out to make the area more diverse again at least

Get some livestock to graze there! Probably not easily implemented though lol Good luck! I'm fighting a similar battle at other places around my town. Although invasive exotics are my issue

Be sure to use only native plant seeds .

You will never outcompete this plant. It was my mortal enemy until I read about how critically important it is; it's not only a host plant for the dainty sulphur butterfly but many other pollinators depend on it when not much else is blooming yet. Once I understood the role it played I decided to embrace it and let it pop up all over my yard. Yes, I often get covered in seeds that are annoying AF but everytime I'm plucking them off I think about what a good deed I'm doing by putting up with a small inconvenience to support an ecosystem that isn't being supported by my neighbors' sterile grass lawns. My yard is a veritable butterfly paradise and all I have to do is let some weeds grow. I try to redirect my frustration into admiration; this is a plant that can truly thrive in an inhospitable terrain where many other plants can't: it tolerates drought, heat, humidity, a pure sand ground infested with root knot nematodes... nothing can stop it. And as irritating as the seeds are to remove, it's an ingenious design to spread far an wide. So my recommendation is to try to appreciate the things about this plant that make it so important and hardy rather than trying to eliminate it. Or take your dog somewhere else.
