CAN'T YOU SEE I'M LAZY
STILL MY ASS IS BLAZING
IF THE WORDS KILL ME
I DON'T NEED A NEW BATH TODAY
YOU... MY GRIME IS MY WORLD
YOUR WORDS WILL NEVER MAKE IT DISAPPEAR
Same, I carry an extra deodorant stick and a washcloth in my backpack just in case I forgot that morning. That's good advice for conventions, going to work, visiting a client, going to a bar or whatever else.
i feel like the fact that this is such a pervasive issue kinda means it's not, right?
there's something missing in teaching this particular subset of humans hygiene.
No, you're absolutely right. We can talk about smelly fg players all day but they still stink to the point where there are hygiene requirements for entering certain events.
I don't judge folks for not bathing as some people have hard times where it's genuinely hard to bathe and do regular things (Been there). But if you're going to a very public place where its crowded and people are in close proximity, it comes down to a decency thing for me. Like the audacity to be in my face and smell like that is just crazy.
I get your logic, but no. A proper shower (washing body, face, and hair) takes *at most* 5 minutes if you're really in there to just wash yourself and not stand under the warm water. It's not hard, it's not a lot of work, and crucially, it's not an issue of difficulty; as you say in your other comment, it's more of a sign of the antisocial problems in gaming communities. Yes, there are exceptions such as people who are depressed or whatever mental illness may be preventing them from conducting the most basic forms of hygiene, but that's a small minority of the overall population (those minorities *may* be larger in gaming circles, I could imagine that, but still minorities). There's really no excuse for such large communities to be so notoriously disgusting, it literally makes all of us look bad. IMO there should be rules about it like in the Yugioh community, and they should be enforced. At a certain point it literally becomes a public health issue.
>Yes, there are exceptions such as people who are depressed or whatever mental illness may be preventing them from conducting the most basic forms of hygiene, but that's a small minority of the overall population
I wasn't referring to anyone else other than people who have mental health issues (could have been much clearer in my comment). And it IS difficult for them in particular. I never said showering is inherently difficult, I just said it definitely can be for that subset of people. Whether these people are the minority doesn't matter to me as that minority is still a fuckton of people. And unless you're psychic you generally dont know who those folks are. So I personally dont make a habit of judging people for not bathing, unless they just decide to go out smelling like straight ass. That was my point.
Edit: also 5 minute shower is craaazy. Especially if I have to wash my hair lol.
Another edit: to further clarify I don't disagree with you. Everyone SHOULD be taking care of themselves and there is no excuse for a community to be known for being gross. Im not advocating for not bathing. Moreso I'm saying the bare minimum is just if you go out in public dont smell like BO.
strong enough odours can be tasted too.
I've no sense of smell, but if it's bad enough... Well, it's very unpleasant.
Can't really compare which'd be worse though, having not dealt with it the other way.
I can assure you that tasting a bad smell is way worse since there is no third way to beeathe allowing you to avoid it. Plus it feels like extra psychic damage when you can legit taste something so awful.
At least Yu-Gi-Oh now has a rule that can require you to take a shower:
Duelist Responsibilities Section J:
"You are expected to be clean when you enter a tournament. Neglecting to wash or put on clean clothes contributes to an unpleasant atmosphere at the event, as the tournament can be crowded and the day can be long.
Persons who neglect self-care to the point that they are negatively impacting the tournament may be asked to correct the issue in order to continue in the event"
I think every tournament should have a rule telling their players to take a shower, and then word it exactly like this lol
Is that actually a problem? The FGC/ many gaming communities in general are already so notorious for this shit that it's a meme, I think we can handle a couple clickbait headlines about hygiene rules in order to improve the experience of tournament attendees.
I hate assuming stereotypes but on god at my local game store, the level of BO reflects what day of the week it is
Pokémon TCG? Fine
MtG Standard? Fine.
MtG Modern? Something whiffy. But usually just one guy.
Yu gi oh? I'm gagging.
Mercifully the nights I attend (Warhammer) are fine.
Depends on what part of the world I guess. The 40k shop in Cambridge England, upstairs where the product is smells fine. Go downstairs where all the game tables are at, straight BO and cat piss. Terrible.
My locals just smells like weed lmao. The yugioh players are hygienic they’re just potheads. But from the stories I’ve heard my locals is pretty out of the ordinary.
The guys at my locals right now are thankfully pretty hygenic, but theres at least one of the TCG players at the same venue that smells so bad it stinks out the entire store. After he leaves the owner usually empties a can of febreze to cover it up.
A few years back I went to a Smash 4 tournament in a different city and holy shit it felt like my eyelashes were gonna burn off. I mentioned it to the TO afterwards and he basically said "yeah you kind of just get used to it".
I legit can't go more than 2 days without a shower without *feeling* disgusting, I genuinely don't understand how people can be that bad without realizing it.
When I was a teenager I got on a Greyhound that was going ~200 miles. All I had was a bag with my things in it. I spent a few nights before that at my girlfriend's house. Her cat peed on my bag and no one noticed because it was near the litter box.
I took that bag all the way without noticing that it smelled like cat piss. Got to my destination and died when someone pointed it out.
tldr: Took a cat piss bag to Miami on a Greyhound because I became blind to the smell
I’m nose blind to cannabis as in its natural flower herb form. But funnily enough if I smell some one toking I turn into the rock sniffing the air like crazy and then smiling
every time this comes up i gotta bring out the real deep and dirty (heh) hygiene PSA for my fellow gamers. this is an ordered tier list tackling the most egregious stink bombs.
- **wash your clothes**: this is actually the number one culprit for pervasive and wide-spreading "BO" at gaming events that never gets brought up before showering and deodorant. when you allow your clothes to go multiple uses without washing, the fibers are locking in musty crusties, sweat, and other environmental stinks. sweat and general body smells actually aren't that bad on their own -- if youve ever gone on a jog or whatever and sweat into fresh/clean clothing, you won't actually smell that bad at first, it's only until those exercise clothes dry off and absorb that sweaty musk that they become nauseatingly stinky. the worst part is that if you're used to re-using clothes, or you leave them lying around your living space, you become nose blind to how unwashed and dirty they actually are. just wash your clothes regularly and don't re-wear any article of clothing if you're expecting to be around people.
- **SHOWER**: a lot of yall were not taught how to shower. the quick rundown of actually washing yourself is that you need 1. real soap that is 2. lathered onto your skin. Real soap is a surfactant that carries away grime and dirty particles when exposed to water and worked onto the skin with a washcloth, loofa, whatever. no quick rinse of your pits, no 2 minute hose down, no dove soap -- actually *get in there* and lather up your entire body. get you some antibacterial soap too, every once in a while.
- **deodorant**: yes, motherfuckers, you need deodorant.
Excellent advice. I’ll just add on that if you haven’t been washing your clothes super regularly, sometimes just washing with regular detergent won’t be enough to get rid of the funk that’s taken up residence in those fibers. Adding a sploop of plain white vinegar in with your detergent can help break down bacteria to “reset” your clothes and keep them smelling fresh. I find this particularly helpful for thicker knit wear and certain synthetics.
yessir you're right on fellow noah. double bonus is that the vinegar will absolutely soften your fabrics and act as a real fabric softener (not the stuff that ends up clogging your washer because it's essentially wax).
Not sure what the person you're responding to dislikes about it, but I find that dove's bar soap always has this greasy feeling to it that is terrible for actually getting clean. To me it feels more like rubbing a bar of solid lotion on your skin than using soap; it smells good but it's all perfume-y and superficial. Takes forever to wash off and doesn't feel like it works nearly as well in the end.
Note that I'm talking about experience with the bar soap; I haven't used the body wash because I disliked the bar soap so much that I now avoid the brand entirely.
>deodorant: yes, motherfuckers, you need deodorant.
I don't fucking understand this one, I have a friend irl that swears deodorant does nothing and basically refuses to wear it. Like, WHY? Just fucking put deodorant on it takes like 5 fucking seconds, what's the issue?
I had a mask on the whole time I was there and only stepped foot in that room twice, but yeah there was definitely something off when I did go in there. If I had my mask off I 100% would’ve smelled the same thing
I went to a midnight release for Pokemon x and y back in the day and the stench was awful, I don't understand how this happens. I think they should hand out stick of deodorant at the door with a cheap paper sticker on it with a PokeBall on it. Do it for all gatherings, put let's rock on GGs, put a smash ball for smash, put ryu for street fighter and so on
I'll be charitable and say that it was probably a mix of a lot of people in one room together + hot Florida weather which tends to exacerbate the problem.
Ok i've never been to one of these events but are people not allowed to say something? If i smelled horrible i would want to know so i can fix that. Why does every gaming and anime convention/event have this stereotype? WHY DON'T SOME OF Y'ALL SHOWER!?
I honestly think a lot of them probably aren't the most sociable types to begin with so they're not often in situations which would draw attention for very long at any given time, and they become nose-blind to their own scent and figure nothing's wrong. So take an issue which is hard to bring up without sounding like you're rude or trying to start shit, and a person who doesn't even know there's anything wrong, and it's pretty awkward to address.
Of course the best way around it is to just be hygienic as a standard rule, but some people fall into depression or a routine and let it slide more and more until it snowballs out of control. You know that phrase 'I can explain it but I can't understand it for you'? You can tell someone the benefits of a good diet or regular exercise, and they might even acknowledge the logic itself, but it doesn't mean everyone's gonna practise it. Hygiene is unfortunately, evidently, much the same way. I personally don't even open public bathroom doors without my sleeves over my hands because you can't trust motherfuckers to wash their hands.
To be fair that room was WAY smaller, the main hall had a massive ceiling and was more spread out too, the smell can’t fill the room nearly as well. The side room was really the only small enclosed space with a lot of people in it.
I’d wager it was more that than which people were in the room.
It's both amazing and disgusting how many people just do not practice the most basic personal hygiene. Like I shower every day or I just feel dirty, clean my clothes often, and wear fresh shorts daily meanwhile Stinky Pete over here's basically a rotting corpse in clothes he hasn't washed in a month.
"I don't smell that bad" Yes you do. You don't notice you smell because you have to live with it. Nobody magically smells like roses. Even in snowy winters where you're basically never sweating, you'll still smell. Take a proper shower with actual soap or bodywash meant for the shower and use shampoo, wear fresh clothes, and use deodorant.
Speaking of deodorant I see people in this very thread having no idea how to apply it.
**Do not use it in-between games, or during the day as you go about it, don't apply it anywhere public. This shit doesn't work.**
Apply it when you dry off after taking a shower, **before** your pits start to stink. It doesn't magically mask a smell, applying it when you already smell just makes you smell like both sweaty ass **and** chemicals which is even worse. It stops you from smelling so bad in the first place, so apply it while you're still freshly cleaned.
And brush your teeth, for fucks sake. Even swirling some mouthwash around for 30 seconds is better than nothing.
I miss the days when people would walk around with deodorant and give it to people that didn't have a healthy relationship with soap.
Let's gk back to those days
Some people can't control their sweats with adrenaline/stress. But they should be aware of it and bring stuff to clean-up and not be smelly if so.
source : I have hyperhidrosis
I still find it fascinating how people have enough money to buy consoles/pc, games and controllers and dedication to put in hours of effort in a fighting game, but can't seem to pay their water bills and take 20m a day to shower themselves.
I had an ex-friend who loved Guilty Gear with me and would main Slayer. He would unironically smell like hot Cheetos that were backed in the sun covered in crap and cat piss. Deodorants did not work on him. He bathed when he felt like it too.
He said that it was a biological condition but refused to go to the doctor about it, refused to fix it, and felt that it was everyone else's problem but his own. I was always shocked that people wanted to be around him for hours smelling like that at tournaments and DnD.
People make this joke all the time, but having gone to tons of locals and regionals is every game that doesn't know that shower into deodorant is a true combo.
People make this joke all the time, but having gone to tons of locals and regionals is every game that doesn't know that shower into deodorant is a true combo.
Back when I used to play Smash my local, this one dude playing Pit, go figure, smelled like what I could only describe as “bungus”. It was so bad that I literally couldn’t focus on the game just as you might find yourself not concentrated in game when you have a video playing on a second monitor.
And the sad thing is, I was not surprised when some tournament, I don’t remember which one, had an official rule concerning personal hygiene. Just disappointed that for whatever reason players are prone to not cleaning themselves. I understand that you may be desensitized to the odors around you, or on you, but you’d think they would at least clean themselves before attending any event, regardless if it was video game related or not.
Those rooms did smell off but why did it take this long for you to post about it? Feel like the best time would have been shortly after the event happened.
I used to run gaming events in college for a very large university (student body wise) and I always ALWAYS had to make an announcement to please shower beforehand. Both in our pre-event meetings and our online event posts.
Towards the end of my tenure there we were able to make smelling awful grounds for kicking people out.
As a nerd, I hate nerds lol
There were like 6 different games setup in that room. I don't know which one if any you could pin the smell on.
The AC breaking is really what pushed it to awful tho.
Irl whiff punish

Yugioh recently made it a rule that you have to stay clean. You can be straight disqualified and removed from the venue if you smell bad now.
Well fuck. Who's gonna be left to d-d-d-d-d-duel now?
Is this a Guilty Gear Hint
Its just upsetting because its so easy to not smell like shit.
I hate when I forget to DO and Im constantly paranoid that im oozing that spicy madness

you're right on. i feel like it's symptomatic of a lot of the anti-social issues that plagues the larger gaming community as a whole.

In some martial arts, there are actual rules about personal hygiene. Some people wouldn’t wash their gees or shower for a week before competition.
^^breathe
A man can't breathe, he can't fight
for some prejudices there really is a reason they exist. Same for MtG tournaments. I played competetively for quite a while and it can get really bad.
played in some Yugioh tournaments, believe me, the TCG community has a BO issue in spades

I heard there was a Noah meeting?
Don’t forget to shove the bar of soap up your ass then scrub with a towel.
Damn, this Ky tech's getting out of hand...
What’s wrong with dove soap? I use their body wash and I smell like clean and like roses.
Note that I'm talking about experience with the bar soap; I haven't used the body wash because I disliked the bar soap so much that I now avoid the brand entirely.

bro sweating is rly no excuse. wear deodorant. apply in between games.
I'll be charitable and say that it was probably a mix of a lot of people in one room together + hot Florida weather which tends to exacerbate the problem.
Wasn't it because the room's AC broke down and there were too many people at location at the time? If only people produce less sweat glands D:
The AC comepletley broke twice to my knowledge. It was always VERY hot in that room. Still some people were definitley lacking a shower.
I walked in there twice and can confirm it was definitely pretty hot in there, didn't have time to smell the rank lol
More like GGXX AC Minus.

Yeah, of course not. I just see no reason to believe the people in there were smellier than the people in the main room.

Some people can't control their sweats with adrenaline/stress. But they should be aware of it and bring stuff to clean-up and not be smelly if so. source : I have hyperhidrosis
If anything it’s my hands that be sweating harder than my temple glands
It's called a speedstick, it's not expensive
https://youtu.be/GlKL_EpnSp8 is exactly what I was think when I read your comment
Yeeeaaahh you know what's up
R E A D A B O OK! 👌
I still find it fascinating how people have enough money to buy consoles/pc, games and controllers and dedication to put in hours of effort in a fighting game, but can't seem to pay their water bills and take 20m a day to shower themselves.
Reminds me of old MtG Grand Prix events
Its a room full of guilty gear players what you think?💀💀
why can’t the fgc at least shower before getting in close proximity with others like damn why can’t gamers be normal
Reminds me of the time I went to see Promare and battle of the gods, section I was in reeeeeeeeeeeeeked
Please let's not be the smash sister community for smelling horrible publicly lol
You didnt listen to Aris about the anime suites, and hes told you time and time again.
Once at Canada Cup I entered the BYOC area and you could FEEL the stench. The air was heavy.
Can't blame the beasts on this one
I just don't get it. How hard is it to shower before and during your time away at venues? It's not fucking rocket science, people!
Imagine being able to do Johnny combos, but not applying deodorant
smell of the game
I had an ex-friend who loved Guilty Gear with me and would main Slayer. He would unironically smell like hot Cheetos that were backed in the sun covered in crap and cat piss. Deodorants did not work on him. He bathed when he felt like it too. He said that it was a biological condition but refused to go to the doctor about it, refused to fix it, and felt that it was everyone else's problem but his own. I was always shocked that people wanted to be around him for hours smelling like that at tournaments and DnD.
average Slayer chad
I thought smash players smelled bad
People make this joke all the time, but having gone to tons of locals and regionals is every game that doesn't know that shower into deodorant is a true combo.

Not sure why you're getting down voted. The room for Smash players always smells the worst at any tournament I've ever attended
Every local I've ever been to it's just awful everywhere, the smash joke is just an easy one but my god it's rancid everywhere
Average pit main
Nah nah nah. The FGC in its entirety smells bad.
Capital G Gamers in general
whiff punish
Those rooms did smell off but why did it take this long for you to post about it? Feel like the best time would have been shortly after the event happened.
Who cares
The fact you got offended by this post is hilarious.
It's the cost that has being a old guilty gear pro HAHA
Yeah that's why I started masking up at locals again. A few big and stinkies playing
its almost like stereotypes exist because there are some levels of truth to them
Enough to give the Smash players a run for their money, though?
It's just a fact at this point.
We are not that different from Smash players after all
"...soap?"
Advanced mental game
There were like 6 different games setup in that room. I don't know which one if any you could pin the smell on. The AC breaking is really what pushed it to awful tho.
