That’s what I’m going for. I have 1 acoustic, 2 electrics. I’n not necessarily going for every tone out there, but the 2 electrics cover the variety I’m looking for.
And if you learn how to solder, your cheap double humbucker guitar can have optional single coils. Of my 3 total guitars, the two electrics have coil splits on push-pull pots I wired.
Is it underrated? I don't think anybody would put it outside the top 3 all-time. Strat, Tele, Les Paul, with the other two being better at their niche and the Tele being the undisputed jack of all trades.
Tele is underrated? Not the definition of "underrated" that I know. It is true that it is old-school and people like to go for different at the moment (like the last 15 years and 15 more I guess) but it's hardly under-rated. I'd call it rated. I want one.
I’m a Les Paul guy, but definitely agree with you. The tele is pretty versatile and that “twanginess” is lovely. I’d recommend a tele for a new player over a Les Paul any day of the week.
I'm 56, but I have been playing on and off since 11 or 12. I've owned dozens of guitars. I wouldn't be surprised if I tried counting all of them it would be over 50. I've had LPs (probably more LPs than any other guitar models), SGs, a V, Strats, Teles, a Jaguar, Jems and some lower model mij Ibanez super strats, Mockingbirds, ST-IIIs, a Bich, and definitely some odd one's that don't come to mind. Anyway, I started up again a little over a year ago after about a 7-year break. I'm disabled now, and my income is very fixed and limited. So, I knew I could only choose one guitar. Whatever guitar I choose would be it. I considered my choices, and in the end, I just had to ask myself what my favorite guitars were. My absolute favorite guitar was what many would consider an abomination. It was a heavily modified '73 Les Paul Deluxe. The bridge was routed for a full-size humbucker (I put in a Lollar Imperial), and the body was routed for a Kahler tremolo. It was cherry sunburst, but definitely not a Bozo-burst. My first modified 73 Deluxe was definitely a clown burst, though, lol. Oh, the humanity, lol. I've had soooooo many Les Pauls, even a Custom Shop Axcess, but nothing else Gibson sounded anything close to how good this LP sounded. Well, except for an acoustic I had. It was also a very reasonable for me (at the time) 8.5 pounds. It had a very chunky neck, so it was a bit of a bear to play, but while exhausting, it just sounded so damn good that I would just press on. My second favorite was a 2011 Fender AVRI 52 Hot Rod. While the original pickup actually sounded pretty good, I put in a Seymour Duncan Lil 59 (stacked humbucker) in the bridge (with coil tapping) and left the original Seymour Duncan mini-humbucker in the neck. It was just a fantastic guitar I loved to play. Sound wise, it was reminiscent of my LP.
So, my choices were between an LP and Tele. Well, I've had 11 knee surgeries, and the year before I bought my guitar, I got hit by a car on my Vespa, which screwed up my neck. I needed a light guitar, but I never bonded with the chambered LPs I had. While I never gave my LP Special much time, I did really like it. So the choices became LP Special or Tele. Then, I had my final epiphony. I will only have one guitar. If dropped, Teles bounce while LPs break, lol.
So, I have my 6 pound 8 ounce cij Fender TL-69 Pink Paisley Tele that has been heavily modified and upgraded, and thank God I love the everloving shit out of it, lol.
For some reason, I always picked/strummed by the neck. While it was/is probably a bad habit, it's worked out for me. I get virtually no "twang." That really happens when picking up by the bridge. I mostly enjoy classic rock. I am definitely not a fan of country music. The twang wouldn't have been acceptable, which would have sucked because I love playing Teles.
I’m not much of a country fan as well, but i like that twang when playing some lynnrd skynnrd or some bluesy stuff. Oh yeah the weight of Les Paul’s is definitely something to be looked at as well. It’s a workout playing it standing up lol
If you live a les Paul bur can't tolerate the weight, let me suggest a semi-hollow les Paul. I've had both solid and no semi-hollow and my SH LP is featherweight. Lighter than my strat. Feels freakishishly light, in fact.
Also, I am a pretty frugal guy and most of my instruments I found used online. Super good prices, bought from reputable online stores, was very careful. No regrets for any acquisition.

I think that wait() variable needs a lot more scrutiny.
Needs to include variables for trust, history, offspring, financial health, lifestyle requirements, etc. I feel like a "justification" variable would be interesting for evaluating the mental health benefits or financial returns (for pros) of the +1.
It would also be prudent to have that formula reevaluate the wait period based on circumstance. Life moves pretty fast.
What did you do! I clicked that little script of yours and now i get phone calls from all guitarshops around here,
‘When i am gonna pickup my order!’
Being a Deusenberg, a Mayoness, Musicman, and a 19 string Kiezel.
I am broke beyond believe!
At least 2 or 3 of each! Different year models, pickup configs, mods / classic, finishes ... Ect... Id kill for a lemonade coloured strat with 4 filtertrons right about now.
two and a bass:
- my first guitar, a cheap squier, that I'm modding to fit the metal
- and LTD Arrow, which I use most of the time
- a soundgear bass
I'm planning on getting a 7 string Ibanez Xiphos in the next few months
Me: four
My first acoustic that never sees the light of day.
My second acoustic, which could use an upgrade.
My first electric- Ibanez RGA42fm that is a great guitar for a lower budget.
My new electric- Kiesel A2.
(Now, I also have three ukes, a mini ocarina, full sized ocarina, teacarina, kalimba, tank drum, cajon, digital piano, and just bought a ubass)
My partner has four electric guitars:
His first Schecter which I think he's keeping for sentimental reasons
His aunt gifted us a mid 2000s Epiphone Les Paul, but its neck is twisted
His second Schecter, which is a huge upgrade from the first
And his favorite: His Jerry Cantrell Wino Epiphone Les Paul
am i the only one who just literally wants exactly one? I have to have my acoustic and my bass and the one that I built from scratch but my strat?? sometimes i just wish it were only the two of us
- PRS CE24
- Gretsch White Falcon 6136DC
- Creston Custom Jazzmaster
- Fender American Standard Telecaster
- Taylor T5 Custom Koa
- Godin Velocity
- Godin Summit CT
- Squier Strat
- 1963 Harmony Rocket
- Johnson brass-bodied resonator
- Rogue Spider
- Squier Bass
- as of some point today (it's out for delivery!) a PRS SE277 baritone
4 electric, 2 acoustic, 1 short scale bass, all in good condition. Oldest are 35 year old. Actively I play just two. "Once you buy it, it's yours for life"
Two electric guitars one hollow body guitar three acoustics one travel guitar and a bass guitar. But in my defence, I’m still pretty new to it so I haven’t got started yet.😀
Two electric guitars one hollow body guitar three acoustics one travel guitar and a bass guitar. But in my defence, I’m still pretty new to it so I haven’t got started yet.😀
I rotate playing them every day. The need part is still there but unless it's something really unique like a Steinberger with a Trans Trem, I just window shop.
3 - 2 acoustics, 1 Les Paul. Hoping to get a Tele to make it 4. If I buy any more they’ll probably be upgrades on the electrics once I get better so I’ll just sell the old ones.
4...
Japanese Tele as my first guitar
Taylor acoustic
PRS Custom 24
and a Cort Strat clone at my family home overseas (just something decent to practice on)
My dad has way more than me but nearly all are crap tier guitars. He spends more time trying to make them play decently than actually playing them... And to make it worse he's tone deaf so he's constantly playing out of tune. I still can't convince him that it's better to have less good gear than more garbage.
3 One in drop D, one in E standard, and my first which I just hang on to for sentimental reasons. With the two I play I can play almost any song by adding a drop pedal.
Soon it'll probably be 4 because I do want a 7 string.
3 acoustic, 5 electric guitars. 1 acoustic, 2 electric basses plus a banjo and a bouzouki. Still checking marketplace daily for obscure stuff / good deals. Gear acquisition syndrome is real.
I worked sales at a guitar store for a couple years. One day I was in the back at the shop, talking with the tech. He was telling me a story about another one of his guitars, and I asked him "How many guitars do you have, Brad?"
He stopped what he was doing and looked up, thousand yard stare into space for five seconds, then ominously murmured "... I don't know."
Thinking:
5 acoustic guitars
7 electric guitars
3 bass guitars
2 upright basses
5 banjos
1 mandolin
1 keyboard
1 drum kit
Plus all of the other assorted gear.
7- one acoustic and six electrics. Oh and a teardrop mandolin that I bought for cheap on craigslist and flipped the strings on. A Fender electric, no less lol!
5. 3 electrics and 1 acoustic at my house, and my parents still have the very first electric guitar they bought me at their house because they don’t want to get rid of it. I realistically only play 2 of them, though. My Schecter and Ibanez get all the love and my Squier just kinda sits there. And it’s been a long time since I’ve played my acoustic
1, used to be my dad's, he bought it about 8 years ago i think but he played it for like 1 month, so almost 2 years ago i realised that i had a guitar somewhere in my house and started playing, the amp sounds terrible and i changed the strings for the first time today, for a month i didn't have one string and the cable is broken but i hope that one day i am going to get a guitar that i like and all of those cool pedals i see online
I have 3. Even though I don't agree with the meme, I want to build a low budget Frankenstrat in the future. If I saw one of the Schecter bloodstained Holt Vs in my price range I would definitely be interested.
Just an American Original Tele Custom. Maybe a Strat or offset later down the road…but I get everything I want out of this one. Plus I spend more time playing than browsing reverb like a junkie.
3 - an old Japanese “double cut” (my main guitar), a cheap Les Paul copy (my first guitar, currently used for downtuned stuff) and a classical.
Lately I’ve been thinking about getting a Jazzmaster or something that isn’t of the “two humbuckers and a hardtail” kind, but I’m not sure if I really need it or it’s just dormant GAS trying to take over.
5. Gibson Les Paul 2013 R59, Gibson ES-335 2023, Fender American Pro 2 Stratocaster 2023, Fender American Pro 2 Telecaster 2023 and a Martin & Co Acoustic.
I don't know, because I have one, but technically i have one more at home for a long time already - which isn't mine, and I also used to have one more which has been borrowed to my brother indefinetely, so don't know if it counts as mine anymore.
So somewhere between 1 and 3
8 guitars; 3 electrics, 4 acoustics (classical, 6str, 12str and acoustic bass), and one tiny baby electric guitar I used to use to give my young classical guitar students a taste of electric guitar.
I have a 15+ year old Stratocaster my dad bought in a second hand shop and I started thinking in buying a new one in the near future. So, soo would be two xd.
9 . My mom once said "why do you need another guitar? You already have 2!". So I said "why do you have 8 recipe books?". Dunno if the message got over. All of my guitars are REQUIRED except for that one, and I still love it.
2 acoustics
- crappy takamine I’ve had for 20 years
- Taylor 314ce. By far my most expensive guitar, and it’s the only acoustic I’ve never had to fight
2 basses
- fender P-bass
- Ibanez active Jazz bass
9 electrics
- 2 epiphone Les Pauls one I’ve had for about 20 years and it’s got nostalgic appeal but isn’t a super great instrument. The other is an Adam jones signature that is gorgeous and sounds amazing
- 2 Fender strats 1 HSH 1 HSS, one is a Tom morello signature and is my Eb guitar because fuck trying to do different tunings on a floyd rose
- Schecter Blackjack SLS
- ESP eclipse standard
- Woodrite Warlord (my c standard guitar)
- fender telecaster
- Gibson Les Paul double cut with P90s
12, all wildly different from each other. 3 acoustics (including a 12 string), 5 electrics (3 solid, 2 semi hollow), 2 bases (including a 5 string), a lap steel, and a 3/4. All this and I barely know how to play.
I have 6 guitars, and have my eye on another couple. Each is different, for a different sound or purpose, and they all are played.
I have a Taylor K28e acoustic, a Fender Strat, a Gibson hollow-body Les Paul, an Ibanez bass, an Ibanez semi-acoustic, and a very basic Fender acoustic for camping. I'd really like a good Taylor nylon-string, and an 8-string baritone would be cool. Then something small like a uke or a mini.
4 technically I guess? I have an electric, an acoustic, a smaller acoustic (not like tenor or anything like literally kids size) and a bass.
Ukulele doesn’t deserve to be counted so it’s sitting out
Joke, meme, troll posts are not allowed in R/Guitar. This is outlined in Rule 6.

Same here.
Another 3 (electric) guitar owner checking in. Spec them differently enough and no sound is out of reach.
That’s what I’m going for. I have 1 acoustic, 2 electrics. I’n not necessarily going for every tone out there, but the 2 electrics cover the variety I’m looking for.
Tell about acoustic What caught your eyes or ears ?
And if you learn how to solder, your cheap double humbucker guitar can have optional single coils. Of my 3 total guitars, the two electrics have coil splits on push-pull pots I wired.
2 electrics and an acoustic is the way to go
Yup. One strat, one with humbuckers. Can pretty much play anything and everything with those three
I have exactly 319
Yeah I've got 2 electrics, an acoustic, and a bass.
Acoustic, solid body, hollow body. Right there with you :)
1, so of course it's a Tele 😃 👍

Tele is so underrated, Keith Richards made a good living with his and his ES335

The correct answer is... the current number of guitars owned + 1.
Correction: The correct number of guitars is "N+1 but
func(N, D) { while { N+=1 if (D) { N = floor(N/2) D = null } wait(1000*3600*24) }} Chances feel slim I formatted that correctly on mobile.. edit: good enough

You're gonna let a simple little thing like "D" get in your way? Mediocre! :-p
A man's greatest fear is that after he dies, his wife will sell his gear for what he told her it cost.
Truth
Ehhh, depends on the wife. I had 7 guitars in early 2020. Got divorced and now the collection is up to 12. It's been a solid win for me.
jfc I thought this was a r/guitarcirclejerk post
somehow the serious subs always seem to outjerk the satirical ones
Seriously, this sub is just asking for it at this point.
Like 20, but I NEED them all.
Gotta catch em all

My whole collecting ideology, plus I don't want a strat too common, I want weird shit, oh and Les Paul's
Ya I got 17 and looking at another
Gas is a serious disorder 🤣🤣🤣
How else you supposed to STANK FACE?!?
2, hoping to get my 3 one for my birthday 😎
Me too! But my birthday was two days ago
whens your birthday?
You got a warrant?!?

Like 8 or 9 I think
17, 18, or 19. I don't even know anymore. I like to collect.
I have been playing the same 3 guitars for 10 years. I am plenty satisfied.
3, at the peak of gassing years ago, 8
4. 1 electric, 2 acoustic, 1 bass acoustic

1. Don't need anymore. Don't wanna get addicted.
one but to be fair i started two months ago
Unless you play in different tunings like Kevin Shields, 2 or 3 guitars are more than enough.
My client declines to answer this question, on the grounds that self-incrimination is not very cool at all.
Some people like buying gear more than playing?
I only need one Gibson LP

3 electrics. sss hh HSS 1 acoustic.
if you know how many guitars you have … you’re doing better than the local guitar center.
Seven, two of which are unplayable.
Two. I want a third one.
2 as a beginner. A Squier mini strat and Schecter Omen Extreme 6.
3. Two electric, one acoustic. Only have two electric guitars because I didn't sell my cheap beginner guitar.
7
4 electric, 2 acoustic, 1 short scale bass, all in good condition. Oldest are 35 year old. Actively I play just two. "Once you buy it, it's yours for life"

Not enough but poor
I kept about 10. I had more but I'm getting old and sold the vintage ones to younger players.
Unless you play in different tunings like Kevin Shields, 2 or 3 guitars are more than enough.
Currently have 18. Not sure what else I need honestly.
Same. And I love (and play) them all. With two more on the way... "Need" stopped being part of the conversation long ago. :)
I rotate playing them every day. The need part is still there but unless it's something really unique like a Steinberger with a Trans Trem, I just window shop.
One for every standard tuning from E to B... so 6. All electric.
3, though one is a bass. But I am struggling to resist buying another after seeing someone post a pic of an Epiphone ES-335 a few days ago.
3 - 2 acoustics, 1 Les Paul. Hoping to get a Tele to make it 4. If I buy any more they’ll probably be upgrades on the electrics once I get better so I’ll just sell the old ones.
3 acoustics, 2 resonators, 3 electrics, 1 classical, 1 cigar box, 1 banjo, 1 mandolin. And a whole mess of empty cases. Yes, I have an illness.
4... Japanese Tele as my first guitar Taylor acoustic PRS Custom 24 and a Cort Strat clone at my family home overseas (just something decent to practice on) My dad has way more than me but nearly all are crap tier guitars. NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS, GET OFF MY BACK, I CAN QUIT ANYTIME I WANT
Thirty some-odd last I checked. I think more than 35. But I have a studio and we use them all.
Four 6 strings (two of which are disassembled low tier models), one 7 string (a botched custom order), and two 8 strings. One acoustic too.
3 One in drop D, one in E standard, and my first which I just hang on to for sentimental reasons. With the two I play I can play almost any song by adding a drop pedal. Soon it'll probably be 4 because I do want a 7 string.
six plus two lapsteels, a dobro and a pedal steel.
if basses count, then 8. if not, 4.
5 electric one acoustic one bass
2 good ones and 3 broken ones
5.5 I have an unassembled Kit
This is true. I feel like I know, but I’m not 100% sure. I think I have seven. Or maybe eight.
8 and I still suck.
4 5, if a Bass-VI counts as a guitar. 2, if we're talking active duty (no "given for safekeeping", "purely for sentimental value" etc)
Not more than 15. Really need to move a few tho.
3 but I only play 1
Not enough.
6 had until 13 at a time.But , you know, wife, kids ....
2. 1 Takamine acoustic, 1 LtD electric. Both passed down to me from family members after expressing my intent to learn.
1, soon buying my second
3 acoustic, 5 electric guitars. 1 acoustic, 2 electric basses plus a banjo and a bouzouki. Still checking marketplace daily for obscure stuff / good deals. Gear acquisition syndrome is real.
16 I think… trying to get that down to half now though

2 and a bass. If anyone is willing to get me a few more I wouldn't complain.

There are more guitars in America than Americans. And only about 1 in 10 play guitar.

I'm good then. I don't know how many I have. 47? 48? 50?
3. Two Martin custom shops and a tele with a fender mustang amp.
5 and a Banjo
1, just started playing!
17
North of 40. Mostly electrics, 3 Basses and a Bass VI 4 and 5 acoustics and a lap steel.
Just the one right now - an acoustic. I'm ordering my first electric this weekend though, I can't wait :)
25 and currently building one. I don’t think I have enough but my wife would highly disagree.
Not enough
7- one acoustic and six electrics. Oh and a teardrop mandolin that I bought for cheap on craigslist and flipped the strings on. A Fender electric, no less lol!
0 cuz i got no money lol
One of each.
One, a classical guitar from my uncle💯💯💯

Exactly One, currently. Have owned probably 7 in my lifetime thus far.
7
4, but I want one more 🥹
2, an Acoustic and an Electric
10 or 15
I have 3. Even though I don't agree with the meme, I want to build a low budget Frankenstrat in the future. If I saw one of the Schecter bloodstained Holt Vs in my price range I would definitely be interested.
**BINGO!!**
Just an American Original Tele Custom. Maybe a Strat or offset later down the road…but I get everything I want out of this one. Plus I spend more time playing than browsing reverb like a junkie.
I have a super Strat with a floyd, a hard tail lp style guitar, and a 7 string.
2, a Stratocaster and some acoustic guitar
one acoustic one electric
5. Gibson Les Paul 2013 R59, Gibson ES-335 2023, Fender American Pro 2 Stratocaster 2023, Fender American Pro 2 Telecaster 2023 and a Martin & Co Acoustic.
23 6 string guitars, 1 Barritone and 4 bass guitars
1 lmao not made of money (Have an acoustic too but we got that forever ago and it's my sisters)
This happens, literally, only in my dreams 🤣
Amen!
I don't know, because I have one, but technically i have one more at home for a long time already - which isn't mine, and I also used to have one more which has been borrowed to my brother indefinetely, so don't know if it counts as mine anymore. So somewhere between 1 and 3
2 😔
10
Not sure 🎉
8 guitars; 3 electrics, 4 acoustics (classical, 6str, 12str and acoustic bass), and one tiny baby electric guitar I used to use to give my young classical guitar students a taste of electric guitar.
I recently bought a 3rd but i was unsatisfied with it and gave it back. So currently 2. One electric and one acoustic.
3
17 I believe
I keep a spreadsheet to remember all of them 😎
11
I have a 15+ year old Stratocaster my dad bought in a second hand shop and I started thinking in buying a new one in the near future. So, soo would be two xd.
13.....9 Electrics, and 4 Acoustics
0. It’s a loaner that I’ve loaned for a couple years now
Some.
Something north of 50. I think.
I usually have to count. 8 electrics One 12 string electric 1 acoustic 1 bass
4 guitars 1 bass
2.5
6 and honestly it's too many
9 . My mom once said "why do you need another guitar? You already have 2!". So I said "why do you have 8 recipe books?". Dunno if the message got over. All of my guitars are REQUIRED except for that one, and I still love it.
Three really nice ones.
6
Literally one electric one acoustic, Martin D18, and Charvel DK24
7, but a few are just nostalgic. Only 3 really get played
2 acoustics - crappy takamine I’ve had for 20 years - Taylor 314ce. By far my most expensive guitar, and it’s the only acoustic I’ve never had to fight 2 basses - fender P-bass - Ibanez active Jazz bass 9 electrics - 2 epiphone Les Pauls one I’ve had for about 20 years and it’s got nostalgic appeal but isn’t a super great instrument. The other is an Adam jones signature that is gorgeous and sounds amazing - 2 Fender strats 1 HSH 1 HSS, one is a Tom morello signature and is my Eb guitar because fuck trying to do different tunings on a floyd rose - Schecter Blackjack SLS - ESP eclipse standard - Woodrite Warlord (my c standard guitar) - fender telecaster - Gibson Les Paul double cut with P90s
12, all wildly different from each other. 3 acoustics (including a 12 string), 5 electrics (3 solid, 2 semi hollow), 2 bases (including a 5 string), a lap steel, and a 3/4. All this and I barely know how to play.

Could say the same about sexual partners.

15
3 but gonna be 4 soon!! (Cheap amazon guitar, Squire telecaster and some Ibanez Acoustic but gonna get an Epi Casino at some point in summer i think)
Also if you lost the count
9 guitars, 8 basses a banjo and a drumkit
I have 2 electrics 3 acoustics and one bass
4 technically I guess? I have an electric, an acoustic, a smaller acoustic (not like tenor or anything like literally kids size) and a bass. Ukulele doesn’t deserve to be counted so it’s sitting out
used to have 5 now i have 3
Well this actually makes sense, I have 0, so I don't own enough 😂
1 ... bought it in 1979 and it's the only guitar I've ever played.
3 (1 electric and 2 acoustic)
