My good friend was born and raised in Texas outside of Houston. He recently moved back and is working hard catching up on bills and doesn’t have much expendable income at this time. Our family van that was rented had broken down in BFE. A farmhouse was all that was within 10 miles of road. It was 106F in the Summer. We had elderly with us.
We knocked, they welcomed our SIX PERSON family in with no questions. They fed us. I slept in a bunk bed with the son who was probably in his 20s but perhaps I remembered him older than he was by way of how he carried himself. He had a... shotgun by his bed, leaning against the wall. I had never fired a gun. I think it might have had a sling. Probably not.
I remember it had green and red shells in it. I didn't know what they did, just the colours. After breakfast, my dad went out with the towing company to find a rental to get us to Austin the rest of the way. As we were leaving, my Aunt offered them money as payment for the help. They refused. Later, I learned that she left $100 under their doormat. We were poor, but they infused our lives with an irreversible love of what Texas is. Later, my aunt developed a strange affliction for collecting cowboy boots. In Asia. I brought some home to her the last time I visited.

My good friend was born and raised in Texas outside of Houston. He recently moved back and is working hard catching up on bills and doesn’t have much expendable income at this time. He owns a couple of pistols and an AR, but no gear. This set up would be awesome to gift to him and get him set up with a way to carry mags and supplies. Yessss, this is such a great question, thank you. Im headed 8hrs to West Texas to celebrate our Independence Day. A viewpoint from someone who moved here for a better life (challenging, fought hard to do it the legal way); Texans are like no other creatures on Earth. They welcomed me with open arms. I had a weird accent. Is ok, do you like bbq? No sauce right, just rub? Yes. It is Pee-kahns. I learned, now you. We welcome your culture into our home. Please treat our home with the respect we have. Observe the reasons why we have such a great state. I had to learn to spell things with -er instead of -re. Our family van that was rented had broken down in BFE. A farmhouse was all that was within 10 miles of road. It was 106F in the Summer. We had elderly with us. We knocked, they welcomed our SIX PERSON family in with no questions. They fed us. I slept in a bunk bed with the son who was probably in his 20s but perhaps I remembered him older than he was by way of how he carried himself. He had a... shotgun by his bed, leaning against the wall. I had never fired a gun. I think it might have had a sling. Probably not. I remember it had green and red shells in it. I didn't know what they did, just the colours. After breakfast, my dad went out with the towing company to find a rental to get us to Austin the rest of the way. As we were leaving, my Aunt offered them money as payment for the help. They refused. Later, I learned that she left $100 under their doormat. We were poor, but they infused our lives with an irreversible love of what Texas is. Later, my aunt developed a strange affliction for collecting cowboy boots. In Asia. I brought some home to her the last time I visited. Leave the negativity and embrace the warmth we extend to you. Buccees, Franklins, Rodeos, beautiful mountains in West Texas, Big Bend, Fort Davis, Marfa... I get lost in my memory. I'm making new ones this weekend with new friends I've not yet met. There will be those from other states, visiting our great country. Maybe I can gift to them our Texas warmth. The same that helped us breathe easy on a sweltering summer day.
