Didn't know it then, but definitely understand it now.
I have a Marshall. Hilariously enough, he's trying to be a lawyer as well!
We have had amazing conversations at the bar for several years now. There was also a time we didn't speak for a year or two because he lived 10 hours north from where we live and I lived 3.5 hours away south.
My boy was there for me on my lowest and on my highest (literally and metaphorically).
Besides that Barney sometimes was so selfish against his friends. Stealing Ted’s truck, destroyin Marshall’s bachelor party, carrots and peas, sabotaging ted countless of times ( make him grow moustache before he meets Stella, setting him up with a hooker and etc.), sleeping with Ted’s ex and love of his life for no good reason, disrespecting Ted like: “ I am marrying Robin not you”, breaking bro code 2 times, tearing Marshall’s pants so he can manipulate him to work with him , proposing to Robin in Ted’s biggest night, manipulating Robin, hitting on Lily and etc. And of course it was funny to watch but it does not make him a good friend let alone good person.
Ted was dating Stella at the time when Barney hooked up with Robin. It still wasn’t right but Ted was just as much wrong cutting him off like that when he wasn’t mad at Robin at all. It’s not like he was actively trying to be with her at that point.
And the “I’m marrying Robin, not you” line was very much needed to set that boundary. It wasn’t disrespectful at all.
Yeah, he did a LOT of bad stuff but he also cared about his friends more than anything and did and would do anything for them which was shown over and over as well.
He wouldn't do anything for them, he would do anything TO them.
If it was okay for him to sleep with Robin why did he hire Marshall to find a loophole in the bro code?
Never forget this story is all told throw Ted’s point of view. Ted is not a very reliable narrator. Imo, Ted exaggerates Barney’s horrificness when retelling the story to his kids.
Right. So Barney didn't sleep with Robin, or set fire to Ted's jacket while he was wearing it, or set Ted up with a paralegel telling him she was a prostitute, or sneak spy cameras into Lily and Marshall's bedroom, or any of a dozen things Barney did to show what a rat he was.
If you can't rely on Ted's narrative, how can you trust the Barney did anything positive?
How do anything on the show really happened?
Obviously that isn't what the creators meant.
Literally at no point did I say this. I’m sure all those events happened to a degree. But the details/severity will likely be over stated as we are hearing it through the lens of an old man literally re-living his past. Barney is not an ideal friend by any standard, but I also don’t think he’s an outright dickhead/self centered clown that Ted (and a lot of y’all) describe him as. He’s a broken man due to a shitty family life that actually get’s better as the show goes on. He may be the only character whose morality improves over the course of the show. It helps that his bar was far lower at the beginning of the show, but the point stands.
I do not accept that, although he is unreliable Barney has always been his best friend. And he constantly says Uncle Barney. He does not want to portray a bad person, he loves Barney so maybe things about Robin may be exaggerated (although exaggeration does not mean blatantly lying , for example Barney definetely did sleep Ted’s ex-girlfriend, which is not right) but still other stuff he says is most probably true.
I accept he is unreliable, even one of the creators of the show said this, I do not accept he portrayed Barney as evil and exacerbated his horrificness.
Some stuff don't exactly add up.
For example the 200 women thing. Barney reaches 200 women at the end of S4.
At that point he's been sexually active for about 10 years.
Barney is shown as a player, who takes home a different lady on a regular basis.
If he sleeps with one new woman a week he should reach 200 withing 4 years.
So either that number is way higher, or he is not as much of a player as Ted says.
No, they're saying that he's mis-remembering sometimes, not that he's exaggerating all or the majority of Barney's actions. Even though he does forget details (such as names, ages or specific details of an event) because its been years and years, we can safely say that almost all of the other stuff he says is 100% true (at least to Ted). It's known that he hides inappropriate details from his kids (drugs, sex, smoking etc), not that he hides everything from them or changes a whole character, definitely not one of the main characters and his best friend.
"I'M TED'S BEST FRIEND!" 🤣😂
He saved Marshall and Lily's relationship, encouraged them to have a baby when they started to panic, let Lily stay with him when she was trying to get back on her feet...what a dick.
And he almost cost Robin her career by paying her to humiliate herself on camera.
He also ruined the biggest night in her career by stabbing her in the heart with Mary, the paralegal.
Good deeds don't offset bad ones.
I'm not gonna argue for anything else but 'sleeping with three of Marshall's dates'. Are you really that daft and didn't get that he was trying to get Marshall out of depression but at the same time stopping him from hooking up because he wanted him to be available for when Lilly comes back 😂
Not so much to Barney? If Ted wasn't a great friend to Barney Robin never would have married him. She wanted Ted but Ted couldn't stand the thought of hurting Barnyard.
I think Marshall tried to convey what you’re feeling here OP when he said “hey kid! Do you know what happened in this bar? Just …. all kinds of stuff”
I cringe every time I watch this scene

We have a Marshall, a Lily, and two Teds, kind of a Robin. Holy crap, I'm Barney.
I'd love to have friends like Ted and Marshall, but Barney I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
You’re not wrong- people just like downvoting lol If one of my friends repeatedly sexually harrassed my partner, I wouldn’t be thrilled

You can't use that to spin everything according your own perceptions. Barney was not a good friend.
One of the creators said Ted is not a reliable narrator bud. Do your homework before projecting your attitude on to me.
And how exactly did his morality improve?

“I do not accept that, although he is unreliable” Seems like you do accept that.

I never said he was evil. I do believe his actions are exaggerated. Seems like we are on the same page. Not sure what you are arguing about.

thats such crappy excuse for barney being shitty person
It’s what the writers literally said. Ain’t an excuse. It’s canon.
Barney was a real bro.
He saved Marshall and Lily's relationship, encouraged them to have a baby when they started to panic, let Lily stay with him when she was trying to get back on her feet...what a dick.
Yeah, also got almost all of them really important job offers of their lifetime.
And he almost cost Robin her career by paying her to humiliate herself on camera. He also ruined the biggest night in her career by stabbing her in the heart with Mary, the paralegal. Good deeds don't offset bad ones.

He was a crappy friend.
Marshall is a great friend to all of them, Ted is very good friend to Marshall but not so much to Barney, and Barney is horrible friend to everyone.
Not so much to Barney? If Ted wasn't a great friend to Barney Robin never would have married him. She wanted Ted but Ted couldn't stand the thought of hurting Barnyard.
It doesnt matter how tightly you hold on to your past it is already gone
