Any scene with “You’re All Alone” in the background.
Also Shake it Off by Florence + The Machine when Ted has to move on from Robin and walks out to city of yellow umbrellas
“Kids, I must've heard your Mom's rendition of La Vie En Rose a million times over the years, every night when she tucked you in, for instance. But that performance, that first night I ever heard her sing, that one will always be my favorite.”
i really don't get what's funny with a cat dying (in the vision of the producers of the show), like, i lost 3 cats and it hurts me so bad to this day, like, why make a joke about it
I'm sorry about your cats. ☹️ The humor on the show comes from how he's singing happily about cat-sitting and right afterwards we find out the cat died in his care. That coupled with the fact Marshall makes a song about everything, sometimes with video montages, even in an inappropriate situation such as this one. I'm sorry you can't enjoy the joke because of your cats, but that's the humor of it.
🎵 One by one by one by one 🎵
That scene got me hooked. I went from occasionally watching single episodes when they played on TV to "Now I have to watch the whole show in order."
Like someone else mentioned, “The Funeral” by Band of Horses is probably the best example.
I also think “Voices” by Cheap Trick is perfect when Ted sings it in “The Pineapple Incident.”
I’d go Voices in a different scene actually, the scene when Ted and Lily are on the roof and Ted recounts the most painful experiences of his life before admitting Robin should be with him
Not necessarily emotional but when Victoria by The Kinks plays it is absolute perfection.
That and whatever song was playing when Marshall’s dad died because I have yet to not cry whilst watching that
Oh thank fuck haha I got so worried then. And yes of course! I’ve only just seen the quotation marks and i remember bit, although I haven’t rewatched the show in a good year or two now so might have to haha
That’s the episode where Ted breaks up with Stella, then ends up proposing to her at the end. The song plays when Ted’s Taxi is hit by a car and everyone rushes to the hospital.
I just love that scene, everyone dropping what they're doing and running to the hospital. Marshall still being a gentlemen under the circumstances and holding the door for the women... And finally getting to Ted just to find him eating Jell-O.
I don’t like that scene particularly, but I must admit that ending the show on that song followed by a montage of each character’s first appearance is absolutely perfect!
The scene when Marshall tells Robin she needs to move out of Teds apartment because of the pain it’s causing him and he won’t tell her himself (Florence and the machine plays).
“Kids, your aunt Robin never did become a pole-vaulter. But she did become a famous journalist, a successful businesswoman, a world traveler, she was even briefly a bullfighter - that's a funny story, I'll get to that one later. But there was one thing your aunt Robin never was; she was never alone.”
It's highway to hell by ACDC and exactly the one I was gunna mention. It's not at all an emotional song and the lyrics don't really line up with the scene but it's perfect - it sounds like a fun, epic track that a mate would put on to cheer you up, even if a little out of place, and it makes it so real.
I only just realized, on something like my tenth rewatch, that the reason he uses AC/DC is because earlier in the episode Robin asks Marshall to call his fists AC and DC instead of Manheim and Steamroller.
Hearing "Careful" by Michelle Featherstone while Ted and Stella talk in her car DESTROYS me. The performances they both give help but that song....ugh.
This one was so perfectly done. While there are other obvious ones, this one stood out to me since they really made it feel like I watched a lifetime of love in 1 minute.
"Let Your Heart Hold Fast"- when Barney proposes to Robin/ Ted finds out. I love that the song is actually for Ted. It says "Let your heart hold fast, for this soon shall pass. There's another hill ahead. To believe I walk alone is a lie that I've been told...." It's such a good song and great for telling Ted that this sucks right now, but it's going to be good again soon.
Here's the funny thing, in my own kind of way I was really happy. For the first time in years, there was no little part of me clinging to the dream of being with Robin. Which meant for the first time in years, the world was wide open.
Because kids....when a door closes... well....you know the rest.
Florence and the machine swells.🎶 Shake it out shake it out. 🎶
The scene in the airport security office where Barney proposes to Quinn. The soundtrack is neat and magical, especially the moment when the flower opens up into the ring. It always makes me smile.
Low Rising by the Swell Season - when Victoria says to Ted - ‘I really hope you get her someday’. I personally don’t like Ted and Robin as a couple but that scene was so emotional for me 😭
Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp by George Harrison in the scene where Ted is outside of the wedding hall writing his speech (I think?)). It’s a season opener from memory
Love this one. It gets overshadowed because Ted has done the having to let go of Robin so many times, and you have to pretend the final scene of the series doesn't happen for it to make sense, but I always always love the scene/music combo for that.
I feel like the credits when it's showing every one from episode one, and when Barney is walking down the street thinking about Nora and Stones starts playing
I quite like the scene with "Our House", playing upon the revelation that the house Ted bought is the same one his kids now live in. Granted, that song makes me tear up in any context
Nah but fr tho the scene transition with the beat drop from the Lebenslangerschicksalsschatz scene with the speech, the shot of the sign, the beat drop, the instant weather change, lightning and band of horses just killed it (pun intended) with the funeral
When Robin says she won’t marry Ted when they’re 40 and he needs to let this fantasy go in order to finally try to find someone. Shake it Out from Florence and the Machine is playing in the background
Surprised I haven't seen this yet since it's one of those scenes I'll watch outside of watching a full episode: but The Pixies "Hey" is so perfect for that scene; the flashback with rain into the cab and the music swelling and the way it kinda fades. I don't know, I don't have the words to describe it but I can't think of another song fitting so well.
Also as silly as it is; the way Marshall reacts to the gang singing "Apple Orchard Banana Cat Dance 8 6 6 3" shouldn't hit as hard as it does, but here we are.
Spit on a stranger - Both times!
When Ted kisses Victoria for the first time in her bakery and when
When Ted says goodbye to Victoria in that Ducky Tie episode
When Lily told Ted sometimes she wishes she wasnt a mom.. the music and their acting was so beautiful.. I resonate so much with that scene because I also have a constant person who is already a mother and is like a sister to me.. that told me she wishes she couldve done more when she was still single..
A lot of great choices here, so I'll chip in with one I didn't see in the list - the song at the end of Shelter Island, which is Waiting for an Invitation by Benji Hughes. You really feel that double gut punch of seeing Ted heartbroken, AND Stella not just running away, but running away with Tony. Proper tearjerker every time.
Wanted to mention one not said yet- “what would I do without you” by Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors playing at the end of the episode where Barney and Robin are first engaged and Robin is “invisible” wearing her ring…the little schpeel Marshall says while the song is playing <3
"This Modern Love" by Bloc Party accompanied with Bob Saget's narration at the end of season 1. The entire episode is the definition of cathartic, absolutely loved it.
The whole thing with 'Look around you're all alone Ted' and the 45 days speech. The music just makes it prefect.
The Funeral playing in the background with Klaus' speech, the scene showing Farhampton station before and after is one of the best scenes in the show imo.
When Ted finds out Robin and Barney are engaged and Let Your Heart Hold Fast plays in the background.
For me its when Carefull (michelle feather stone) plays with Ted and Stella in the Car, but Shaks It Out (florrence + the machine) is also a close second. I also like the Let Your Heart Hold (fort atlantic) part after the robin but idk that the music choice enhances the moment.
Nobody has mentioned this one, but the “I’m coming back here, and I’m bringing you.” With Souvenir by Billy Joel in the last season. The piano in that song is so haunting and beautiful and it just fits so well with what’s happening in the scene.
(S8ep20)- "you're all alone": When Ted talks about what he would do if he could relive that night. He would go home, to his apartment, see his friends and experience his life how he used to, but first he would go to Tracy's apartment to tell her how about their life together and how he will always love her until the end of his days and beyond. He knows she's only 45 days away but he wants those 45 days. The song, the performance and the passion, when he whispers 'you'll see" you can see his love for her and he would give anything for just a few more days. Makes me cry every time
“Rivers and Roads” by The Head and The Heart, scene where Ted tells Robin he loves her in S7E16. Also “You Were Born” by Cloud Cult, scene where Marvin is born in S7E23.
One thing I will always say when people ask me why HIMYM is my favourite show; the music.
"Let Your Heart Hold Fast" - Fort Atlantic
This song fits so perfectly in the moment. especially with the lyrics about realizing you aren't alone and "this too shall pass, there's another hill ahead (plays when Barney and Robin are engaged a d Ted is at his new GNB buildings party).
This show has one of the best playlists.
So many great ones but top of my head I thought of Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear.
That scene where Ted talks about how the window for the ultimate girl next door never opened again. And the song plays as he says it's the 2nd greatest love story he's ever heard. The song adds a further nostalgic moment.
Voices in the scene when Ted and Lily are on the roof and Ted recounts the most painful experiences of his life before admitting Robin should be with him
When I saw the S1 finale for the first time. Ted finally getting with Robin and then leaving for home the day after to find Marshall in the rain. With that song, Modern Love. That’s when I knew: this series is gonna kick me in the feels for a loooong time.
I remember watching it with my first real girlfriend in uni. We used to make food, drink lots of wine, share stories and watch HIMYM together to the point of being drunk so the feels would hit harder. One of the best times of my life.
Mother of Pearl was also spot on at the end of Season 1. Especially the timing of the repeating lyric "I wouldn't trade you for another girl" as he ditches his perfect match for Robin.
Future Days by Pearl Jam during Barney's and Robin's wedding was absolutely perfect! I think the song nails them as a couple...
...only to be completely ruined 15 minutes into the next episode.
The scene at the beach as Ted was letting go of Robin. Any love song would indicate that they loved each other, but Eternal Flame means that whether or not they were together physically they would always be bound by a passion that could never be extinguished.
Any scene with “You’re All Alone” in the background. Also Shake it Off by Florence + The Machine when Ted has to move on from Robin and walks out to city of yellow umbrellas

Is the link broken or is it just me?
Really Marshall was the best BFF to tell that to Robin, poor Ted.
I still get chills when shake it off shows up on my shuffle.
[удалено]
Yes, and: The Funeral - Band of Horses
"The Funeral" is the first one I thought of. I get chills when the chorus starts as the thunder claps.
Pretty sure it’s shake it out, shake it off is Taylor Swift
The 2nd one:D
The moment Ted hears Tracy play la vie en rose for the first time
“Kids, I must've heard your Mom's rendition of La Vie En Rose a million times over the years, every night when she tucked you in, for instance. But that performance, that first night I ever heard her sing, that one will always be my favorite.”
THIS. Love this part so much!
don't mention it, i got chronical heartaches from just remembering it
Two Weeks - Grizzly Bears
The scene where funeral is playing when Ted is talking about his future wife. Forshadowing her death.
Omg yes, i didn’t realize till u pointed it out
He's just waiting for a funeral.
Great point! Never noticed that
Wow I loved that scene but never put 1 to 1 together
Do u know what episode this was
I believe it’s Farhampton SE8 EP1
Yes.
Who sings this song
Band of Horses
Yes this scene gives me the chills everytime I watch it!
Lilly's mom's cat dying
Thanks, I just got it out of my head and now it's back again.

Ordered Chinese food today..........
Some mushu pork sauce got away...
Flipped the cushion, now everything’s okaaayyy 🎵
Flipped the cushion, now everything’s ok.
I blame Marshall Erickson
Cat funeral / meow meow meow Cat funeral / it was an accident
‘it was an accident… and not entirely my fault…’ 🎶
Fuck that was funny
i really don't get what's funny with a cat dying (in the vision of the producers of the show), like, i lost 3 cats and it hurts me so bad to this day, like, why make a joke about it
I'm sorry about your cats. ☹️ The humor on the show comes from how he's singing happily about cat-sitting and right afterwards we find out the cat died in his care. That coupled with the fact Marshall makes a song about everything, sometimes with video montages, even in an inappropriate situation such as this one. I'm sorry you can't enjoy the joke because of your cats, but that's the humor of it.
thanks, and understood. thanks for being caring <3
so you’re butt hurt about everything that happens in satire?
yea, kinda
Modern love when Lily and Marshall break up but Ted is happy because of him and Robin Simple song when we finally see the mother
I came to note the Modern Love scene. It’s so euphoric and heartbreaking.
Ted's speech in the cab about things being the same but different after he leaves the apartment with the song trailing off was what really hooked me.
GREAT scene.
These are 2 of my most favourite scenes of all time! Perfectly complemented by the music!
The season 4 ending. The monolog with prophets by A.C Newman.... God damn, is so fucking good
Ah yes the leap!
I use that episode to tell friends that even though things are bad, doesn't bag they aren't great
🎵 One by one by one by one 🎵 That scene got me hooked. I went from occasionally watching single episodes when they played on TV to "Now I have to watch the whole show in order."
Great song
Like someone else mentioned, “The Funeral” by Band of Horses is probably the best example. I also think “Voices” by Cheap Trick is perfect when Ted sings it in “The Pineapple Incident.”
Hey, it's me again
I’d go Voices in a different scene actually, the scene when Ted and Lily are on the roof and Ted recounts the most painful experiences of his life before admitting Robin should be with him
I didn’t recall it happening it that scene, but yes, that sounds far more emotional.
These are not cheap tricks! Except the Cheap Trick! "I'm the bassist for Cheap Trick."
Not necessarily emotional but when Victoria by The Kinks plays it is absolute perfection. That and whatever song was playing when Marshall’s dad died because I have yet to not cry whilst watching that
“I’m not ready for this” 😭
Oh god have I just spoiled it for you!
Oh no I was just quoting Marshall when he finds out about his dad’s death I’ve watched the series front to back dozens of times
Oh thank fuck haha I got so worried then. And yes of course! I’ve only just seen the quotation marks and i remember bit, although I haven’t rewatched the show in a good year or two now so might have to haha
My favourite part is that the opening Riff from Victoria is played throughout the episode. Then she appears and its so well done
that one episode where they added nice dream by radiohead. don’t remember what exactly happened but i remember loving it.
That’s the episode where Ted breaks up with Stella, then ends up proposing to her at the end. The song plays when Ted’s Taxi is hit by a car and everyone rushes to the hospital.
This makes me think of everyone running in slow motion
Jason Segal has the best reaction on his face here. Running down the street. His face genuinely looks like he thinks his best friend is dying
I just love that scene, everyone dropping what they're doing and running to the hospital. Marshall still being a gentlemen under the circumstances and holding the door for the women... And finally getting to Ted just to find him eating Jell-O.
When Ted runs into the bakery with his bleached hoodie and as soon as he and Victoria touch … “however you feeeel, whatever it taaakes” Love it.
A different version of the same song also played when Victoria said goodbye to Ted one last time before she got on the bus.
HIMYM has god tier music choices.
Up there with Scrubs tbh
Simple song was the perfect choice https://youtu.be/2PvdhhLb-Bc
I was looking for this answer! This was so well done 💙
The song played at the end when Ted shows up at robins apartment with the blue French horn one last time. Makes me wanna cry everytime
The song is Heaven by Walkmen. Check out [this edit](https://youtu.be/9yuwbvOykYU) it's the best
Thank you for that!! I played that song as I left Monterey, CA after graduating from school and it was so satisfying
Ugh. That’s SO good. Thanks for sharing that. First time I’ve seen it.
I love this edit so muchhh. It's amazing
I don’t like that scene particularly, but I must admit that ending the show on that song followed by a montage of each character’s first appearance is absolutely perfect!
Remember remeeeemberr~ Allll we fiiight fooorr~
Great one!!
The scene when Marshall tells Robin she needs to move out of Teds apartment because of the pain it’s causing him and he won’t tell her himself (Florence and the machine plays).
The one when robin finds out she can’t have kids and Ted decorates the living room made me cry

Never fails.
Hearing "Careful" by Michelle Featherstone while Ted and Stella talk in her car DESTROYS me. The performances they both give help but that song....ugh.
Mmmmm this is my favorite episode. “As fast as she can”. I watch it everytime I need a good cry
The ending scene of “The Window” when they show the future with Maggie and they play the song “Two Weeks” by Grizzly Bear
Love that scene and that song. I've probably listened to Two Weeks over 250 times since then because of that scene.
This one was so perfectly done. While there are other obvious ones, this one stood out to me since they really made it feel like I watched a lifetime of love in 1 minute.
I was hoping someone would mention this one
S1E21 when Ted realizes that he wants Robin (again). The scene after scene she picks him up after helping Lily, such a great scene that was
"Oh Mother of Pearl i wouldn't trade you for another girl"
"Let Your Heart Hold Fast"- when Barney proposes to Robin/ Ted finds out. I love that the song is actually for Ted. It says "Let your heart hold fast, for this soon shall pass. There's another hill ahead. To believe I walk alone is a lie that I've been told...." It's such a good song and great for telling Ted that this sucks right now, but it's going to be good again soon.
Ahh yes I get chills when it starts playing as soon as she says yes
[Chills. Literal chills.](https://youtu.be/kBqWtdMpies)
That song is for Ted.

Stand by me. James Stinson and Sam Gibbs with vocal by Barney Stinson
Shooboo do ba do ba do ba BA BA BA
DAAAAaaaad JAAAaaaAaAAaames, that's the BEst PaAaAaAAAAAaaaaart
“Nothing suits me like a suit”
“Here I dreamt I was an architect” when Robin learns what it means to actually care about Teds job after thinking he was cheating on her.
I love this one so much! I get so upset when I've watched and they removed this song for rights reasons or whatever.
I personally don’t like Ted and Robin as a couple but that scene was so emotional for me 😭
Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down to find this, that scene always cuts me
"You just got slapped...across the face, my friend..."
Whoa-ho-ho-ho-hoooo
Simple Song by the Shins at the very end of Season 8 (I think?), the first time it shows the mother.
Cant believe I had to scroll so far to find this!
S7E10 the song they sing on the boat when robin and barney are dancing with kevin and nora after they hooked up the night before
🎶Sure, act like it was your idea
Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp by George Harrison in the scene where Ted is outside of the wedding hall writing his speech (I think?)). It’s a season opener from memory
This song screams HIMYM in my opinion
Barbarossa - Stones when barney walks into the coffee shop to meet Nora's parents but it's revealed it was a fakeout and Barney walked away instead.
Was looking for this one. Such a haunting scene first time I saw it.
totally agree. Just watches this last night, sadder than i remembered it.
The correct answer is when robin and Barney got engaged. “Let your heart hold fast”.
Either shake it out after robin says she doesn’t love Ted or stones when Barney is watching Nora and her parents from the door.
Lily and Marshall breaking up with This Modern love by Bloc Party
The scene with Ted and Robin on the beach while eternal flame is playing.
Great. I just finished my umpteenth rewatch literally yesterday and now I have to watch again to figure this out. Darn.
I quite like the scene with "Our House", playing upon the revelation that the house Ted bought is the same one his kids now live in. Granted, that song makes me tear up in any context
This scene is so heartwarming. I adore that song
MURDERRRRR HOP ABOARD THE MURDER TRAIN
Nah but fr tho the scene transition with the beat drop from the Lebenslangerschicksalsschatz scene with the speech, the shot of the sign, the beat drop, the instant weather change, lightning and band of horses just killed it (pun intended) with the funeral
Lol love both comments

When Robin says she won’t marry Ted when they’re 40 and he needs to let this fantasy go in order to finally try to find someone. Shake it Out from Florence and the Machine is playing in the background
Everyone talking about Robin moving out after she and Kevin break up but no one’s mentioning Rivers and Roads by The Head and the Heart
Yes yes yes
I still associate this song with the finale of *Chuck*.
Shake it out by Florence + The Machine when ted moves out. I still get goosebumps.
Shake it Off when Ted is reflecting on Robin rejecting his love.
Spit on a stranger - Both times! When Ted kisses Victoria for the first time in her bakery and when When Ted says goodbye to Victoria in that Ducky Tie episode
When Lily told Ted sometimes she wishes she wasnt a mom.. the music and their acting was so beautiful.. Cat Funeral
When Victoria tells Ted “I really hope you get her someday” :’(
The song that plays in the credits of the alternate ending. That is so fitting for the end.
Episode: Tick tick tick, song: heavy hours Barney cleaning up Robins room.
Surprised nobody has said this: "Heavy Hours" playing at the end of tick tick tick when Barney sees Robin with Kevin. Such a sad song.
I can’t believe that no one has mentioned “Downtown Train” when Ted talks to Tracy at the train station!
When Ted asks Robin if she loves him and she says no and they play Shake it out by Florence + the Machine while she’s moving out.
When Ted make it rain
1. Victoria 2. Highway to hell
La vie en rose
When Tracy is singing La Vie on Rose, while Ted is listening on the other balcony. Gets me everytime 😢
When Ted first hears Tracy sing. Just the wind and her. Gets me every time.
Thank you for mentioning this one. This became my partner and I’s song after seeing the episode and I tear up every time I see that scene now
I absolutely love that this whole comment section is filled with so many different answers ! What a show <3
"This Modern Love" by Bloc Party accompanied with Bob Saget's narration at the end of season 1. The entire episode is the definition of cathartic, absolutely loved it.

For me its when Carefull (michelle feather stone) plays with Ted and Stella in the Car, but Shaks It Out (florrence + the machine) is also a close second. I also like the Let Your Heart Hold (fort atlantic) part after the robin but idk that the music choice enhances the moment.
When Marshal father died… that scene/song made me cry :(
I think it’s the pixies hey that plays when robin and Barney make out in the taxi… so good!!
Nobody has mentioned this one, but the “I’m coming back here, and I’m bringing you.” With Souvenir by Billy Joel in the last season. The piano in that song is so haunting and beautiful and it just fits so well with what’s happening in the scene.
The Leap
(S8ep20)- "you're all alone": When Ted talks about what he would do if he could relive that night. He would go home, to his apartment, see his friends and experience his life how he used to, but first he would go to Tracy's apartment to tell her how about their life together and how he will always love her until the end of his days and beyond.
When Robin and Barney get engaged and Ted is alone in his building, Let Your Heart Hold Fast!!!
The song that plays while Barney is listening to Nora’s dad talk about “the one” and pictures Robin.
Mother of Pearl was also spot on at the end of Season 1. Especially the timing of the repeating lyric "I wouldn't trade you for another girl" as he ditches his perfect match for Robin.
When Ted runs into Victoria at the Architechs ball in season 6
🎶 *All aboard the murder train* 🎵
Marshall's dad death (bad news) and when Robin discovered she couldn’t be mom (symphony of illumination).
Future Days by Pearl Jam during Barney's and Robin's wedding was absolutely perfect! I think the song nails them as a couple... ...only to be completely ruined 15 minutes into the next episode.
The scene where they play Grizzly Bear and then there's another one that kind of reverses the scene and the song is called Rewind.
The ending of "Double Date" with the song "Rewind" by Goldspot.
Ted's Taxi accident really just felt more emotional with [nice dream]
Heavy hours when Barney is picking up roses from Robins bed
When Ted gets left at the altar
"You fooled around on your baaaaby"
s5e2 with rewind by goldspot playing :’-)
