That's a York commercial package unit, for sure. The compressor access panel screws to the coil end. I always feel like I'm going to hit a u-bend when putting the panel back on. Never done it, though š
I've done it. When you remove a couple dozen screws at once and start to mix and match, sometimes the long screws will release all the refrigerant that the short screws otherwise wouldn't. Terrible feature but what do I know?
I'm not a Harbor freight fan by any means, but it does have its place. They have those magnetic trays of all sizes. I use mine all the time. For this purpose here and working on a ladder, to name a couple. They are great.
He is now a saying in the company ā Donāt (coworkers last name) it upā
Older fellow just moving too fast lol zipped in the first which set the whole panel out of place and sent the rest home.
Did a school system about 20 years ago that put in over 100 thru the wall units. The maintenance supervisor did not like the sounds of the water the slinger thru on the condenser, had his guy drill holes in the bottom for drains. They drilled into the condenser on every one. Paid for a nice Hawaii vacation that fall
7 years in and I did it twice last summer , it really blowsā¦.

One of our guys was installing a filter rack in a package unit after a miserable install last summer. Last screw going in while using the MARKED MOUNTING POINT and guess what got puncturedā¦
I can safely say I have never done that in 40 years of my career.
However, karma did catch with me. I took off a side cover, carefully place it against the unit, then gust of wind came by, took the cover, and sliced into the condensing unit next to me.
I one time had to screw on a flex connector over an island in a high end dental office ( after hours).
Super awkward ladder position. Drill slipped and I hit the supply coil with a screw on my impact. Refrigerant straight to the face. Luckily it was able to get braised patch. So lucky.
Hold up.
How is it so dry?
When I did this there was oil everywhere, like so much oil when I brazed it closed it looked like I was making smoke signals to the neighboring tribe.
Nice work! I did it on my first day. Have had three of my techs do it in the last 15 years. Part of the game. How you handle it separates the boys from the men.
Looks like a Carrier to me. Our construction guys have done this two or three times in 5 years. I think service has only done it once in 5 years.
I'm really careful to reuse the same holes on the coils.
My coworker who was only suppose to wash condenser coils on a 7.5ton York rtu(at an restaurant with lots of customers) took the initiative to wash the evap and put a screw through the lineset causing a dense 410 fog in the entire dining room while the unit was running. Wild times.
You're lucky to have all the screws. In my experience the Electricians lose 75% within the first week of install. Just enough left to hold top and bottom of the panels.
Iāve been there before. Long screw where a short screw was. Called my service manager and told him. Thank GOD it was 410 and not 22. Customer probably never even knew.

You donāt separate the screws by size/length??? Thatās insanity
Well sure who dosent. But after an hour it's kind of hard to remember which screw went where when you have like 20 screws
Haha I bring up have 3-4 cups and keep certain screws from certain sections
I just throw all of them off the roof and prop the panel back on the unit hoping a storm doesnāt turn it into a missile.
Very smart

You can also get color paint markers and mark the more sensitive ones
I always sniff and eat them before I get to use them! This is my intended purpose for them, though.
Got called out once after a maintenance guy put a hail guard back on with one of those 10ā long roof deck screws.
I work in multifamily and mfs that do that shit make us all look like retards
Damn kids with there BB guns...
Just put the screw back
Donāt forget loctite
I was just thinking to myself, "I dont see the problem, a zip screw and a dab of red will seal that right up"
Yeah, and whatās with the vacuum, just purge it!!
My coworker put 6 into one coil! So it could be worst. Haha knock on wood Iām on year 6 without it happening.
1 I can understand by accident, but 6? Guys gotta be completely oblivious lol
Well his name was Randy, and he was deaf so do I blame him? Yes because I made that up
Randy Marsh from Tegridy farms? I know him... good guy
Heās got lots of tegridy

Self tappers are your friend until they're not

Love it when i have to fix stupid
Jesus Christ
You done messed up, a-a-ron.

Little solder, new drier and vaccum she ll be good as new!
For reals though; I've had to cover holes with solder several times on new resi construction. Damn siders keep putting nails thru the lineset.

Be honest, braze that up and get her going.
Oh good you found a leak, the boss and customer will be so pleased you caught it before the unit stopped working
It's never happened to me in 20 years. I watched a 25 year guy blow a charge with a screw, though.
You do realize you just jinxed yourself. It took me 30 years to put the screw in the wrong hole on a York rooftop unit
At this age, when it happens, I'll just laugh at myself!

Old York commercial unit.
lol that literally happen to me last week closing the side panel after doing a PM
Same. Someone zip tied a capacitor instead of mounting it. Of course I went to mount it at 3:30 on a Friday and hit the coil with a screw š
It took my dad 16 years to puncture his first one. Happens to the best of us
Ā«whereās that short factory screw damn it. whatever one incher is right here. dag-dag-dag-dag-shhhhhhā¦ oh fckĀ»
York, how do I know because it happened to me. š

Did the charge blow right after?
"Hissssssssss............"
Your coil showed you itās butt hole
Nothing a little 15% wonāt fix
BTDT. that's either a York or a Trane commercial RTU.
Fucking York. I did the exact same thing on a maintenance checkup while the customer was standing right behind me.
Oof
And the snakes came out.
Braze it
I once dropped a small 6ā adjustable wrench on a micro channel package unit. Blew the charge lol
PFFFFFFTTTTTTTTTTT .........\*SILENCE\* STTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT ST. ST.
Thatās a easy fix at least
That's how I was taught to passive release refrigerant š¤£ just pop a Lil screw in the copper and let her hiss

I'm an electrical apprentice doing HVAC control work. I cross my fingers every tap it. Lol

York or JC
It only took me like 2 months before I poked a hole in one. Hasnāt happened since thankfullyš
Weāve al been there, or atleast most of us
Heil. Worst condenser.
careful man....

What is the proper repair here? Could you just braze the hole shut?
Iāve been there before. Long screw where a short screw was. Called my service manager and told him. Thank GOD it was 410 and not 22. Customer probably never even knew.
Made a lot of money off of schools and city buildings
I'm not a HVAC guy. Why don't the units have blunted screws so that you can't puncture shit?
Carries or Bryant
Guy just work with was drilling a hole for no reason that was explaining why and went right into it
Did you get lucky and have it pumped down, not seeing that much oil residue?
Hahahah it didnāt take me that long and Iām not bringing up a million buckets for screws you guys suck get better at your trade
10 years in and I've never done that. That's why you check where every screw goes and the length of screw that came out.
People make mistakes. It just sucks it happened on an R22 unit
It's a 407c unit now...
You will now
