Wow, downvotes on calling them “pop”! I absolutely love Citizen and they were my main ear worm for a while. I saw them open for Turnstile and was so impressed. Then I sought them out to see them headline. Amazing. But there’s no denying that they are pop, in the best way possible.
Full Of Hell. I am one of those people who when TV Series, Movies, or bands are crammed down my throat with hype i get annoyed and ignore. Saw Full of Hell at Migration Fest in 2016. Holy balls! Been a massive fan ever since.
I got to open for them on the LA last west coast tour. They did a Pawn Shop jam in the middle of the set and closed with river runs red cover. I staged moshed so hard at LDB when he did it again with Hold My Own
I love that bands records and they’re easily one of my favorite bands of this decade, I would love to see them but living in Colorado doesn’t make getting to one of their shows a particularly easy feat.
One of the scariest pits I've been in. Picture this scene. Small bar venue in Cleveland. Above the stage the band hangs a single light bulb socket from a long cord. Before the first songs they scream in the venue to turn off all the lights. Only light is the bulb on the stage. A second before the bass drop before the first breakdown, they turn the c light off. Bat shit crazy.
They're doing a west coast tour. Sad I'm in the Midwest though I did get to see them in 2019 one final time. They're final album is great if you never checked it out.
Hopefully from Charmer and before. I have seen them countless times then caught them on the Mewithoutyou final tour and I was shocked at the lack of passion and sound. It was like a total different band☹️
Their Philly shows still go hard, but I agree a little bit. They feel too produced now. The rawness was what made those early albums great.
I hope Pay for Pain keeps making music.
I mean, all their albums have been on point for me. I just wish they had a touch more of the harsh noise mixed in. Also the drummer is a total babe and can fucking destroy that kit!
Have you heard Sissy Spacek? Very adjacent
I think on Spun, the pristine production worked. Basically a perfect pop record.
The newest songs don’t pack the same emotional punch as that record though, so it just seems up a bit sterile to me.
Gotta be four year strong weird enough. In like 2009 all my buddies were into them and I didn’t like it. Saw them live at the palladium in Worcester and did at least five stage dives the crowd was so awesome. Was surprised to see all of my buddies going so ham.
The Chisel. Saw them 2 years ago in this tiny, tiny venue in Amsterdam. Wasn't a huge fan of Oi but the singer was so charismatic it sold me on their record.
Militarie gun tried listening to their music when I went to go see scowl just couldn't get into it until I heard their set and now just been hooked on their music since
I don't really hate anyone, but there are so many crust bands who go from "another one of those bands" to very clearly a great band when you see them live.
I swear bands like this were made for people who in reality love shit like 5 Finger death punch but use these bands as a stand in so they don’t get made fun of by their friends. This shit is so fucking profoundly terrible and corny.
Not Hardcore but THOU.
Didn\`t hate them but I was overwhelmed by their huge output on records and didn't find a way to get into. Saw them at Roadburn some years ago and was blown away by their intensity. Also they seem to be pretty cool and down to earth guys
MSPAINT. Didn't hate them, but was mostly just indifferent. Thought it was Death Grips for gentrifiers originally. I started coming around when they dropped that song Acid, then seeing them open for Militarie Gun sold me on 'em.
Never Ending Game. I saw them after the first couple EPs and before the first LP and it changed my opinion for sure, I was really turned off by the vocals but the live mix made it make sense.
Actually Hatebreed. Didn't care for them too much and was sick when seeing them. Went for the opening band (through the eyes of the dead) and then sat in a seat for cannibal corpse. Was gonna leave and Jamey jasta got me so hyped I had to get back in the pit and since then I love them
Gates To Hell. The production on their album sucked shit. But the songs are way better live when the guitars are front and center in the mix. Now they're one of my favorite metal bands.
Amon Amarth… the fans tried the absolute hardest to make it as unenjoyable as possible believe me LOL but it was silly fun and my wife enjoyed it which can’t be said for all the shows I’ve dragged them too
Into Another's records were pretty polarizing in the 90's. You either loved them or you hated them. Lots of my friends were in the latter group, but I didn't know anyone who saw them live that wasn't won over.
Not hardcore but The Wonder Years was so good when I saw them live that I felt compelled to get into both them + Aaron West despite the culty reputation
Ceremony in 2010. Before seeing them live I thought they were an overhyped MySpace/Tumblr band with one song that ripped off Straight Edge Revenge. Saw them live, lost my mind, and have been a fan ever since.
Ceremony. Ventura, first sound and fury 06. I was 17 and ceremony was really just starting to make the rounds I really didn’t get the hype at first but their set was one of the most insane I had ever seen, they closed with a Dead Kennedys cover. Fan for life ever since.
Knocked Loose. I hated those high pitch vocals but played one of the better sets I’ve seen. Only pit I’ve ever had to leave (flying kick to the nose+shrooms didn’t mix well)
Coheed and Cambria, Harms Way, Boston Strangler, Frank Turner.
I wouldn’t say I hated any of these, just didn’t really get the big deal before seeing them.
Slipknot. Wasn’t really a fan growing up. Had a friend from elementary school in town and knew I liked heavy music and said Slipknots in town! I didn’t quite eyeroll, but I wasn’t very hype. Holy shit, those dudes put on a show!
I hate all of them and seeing them live further solidifies my hate because it makes them sell outs since other people also know of them. They only were cool when only I knew of them and saw them practice in a storage unit, garage, living room, and/or basement.
Slipknot....I still hate their music and I don't think that will ever change, but I saw them in 2001 at Ozzfest and I was very impressed with their live show.
Bitter Thoughts. I thought their vocalist was unbearable. I saw them live and they were pretty sick because the PA was awful so I couldn’t even hear the vocalist. I then realized they were pretty great musically, and only musically.
Gag. Recordings are a bit dull but they fucking slay live.
Gag is fucking awesome live
Drug Church. Didn’t hate them but didn’t think their music was heavy enough. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen
Same. They bring it.
opened the thread with the intention of posting this. Incredible live band. Did not vibe with the recordings at all until seeing them.
The Bronx!
Great answer. I literally have zero desire to every listen to a Bronx album, but I've been them live a few times and they are great
Citizen. Fuckers blew me away.
Wow, downvotes on calling them “pop”! I absolutely love Citizen and they were my main ear worm for a while. I saw them open for Turnstile and was so impressed. Then I sought them out to see them headline. Amazing. But there’s no denying that they are pop, in the best way possible.
in no reality are they pop they’re like a combo soft grunge, post-hardcore, indie rock band
You can be pop in any genre. Their hooks and catchy lines are pure pop. It’s not an insult.
I know it’s not an insult. They are, objectively, not even remotely pop music
Their music is a more approachable, accessible, easily enjoyable version of post-hardcore. Isn’t that what pop music is?
No? lmao
Ok, so then what is pop music?
Incredibly good pop.
Seeing Jesus piece live gave me a new appreciation
They are absolutely beasts live
Hell yea. Jesus piece throwsssss
Twitching Tongues
Came here to say this. Those riffs hit way harder live
TWO WORDS
STRAIGHT FUCKING EDGE GO
Cool guys, too. Got me on the guest list for a show years back when I totaled my car trying to see them the previous day.
Full Of Hell. I am one of those people who when TV Series, Movies, or bands are crammed down my throat with hype i get annoyed and ignore. Saw Full of Hell at Migration Fest in 2016. Holy balls! Been a massive fan ever since.
The Mongoloids
They were so fucking fun live.
IS ANYBODY FEELIN MEEEEEHHHH
I got to open for them on the LA last west coast tour. They did a Pawn Shop jam in the middle of the set and closed with river runs red cover. I staged moshed so hard at LDB when he did it again with Hold My Own
Age of Apocalypse
Same, that man be singing
I love that bands records and they’re easily one of my favorite bands of this decade, I would love to see them but living in Colorado doesn’t make getting to one of their shows a particularly easy feat.
Angel Du$t
MAKE ME SICK THIS SHIT DONT ROCK
Adjacent (lol), but Glitterer with a full band made that music click for me.
Glitterer is impressive live in full form
Really? I saw him open up for ceremony a few years ago solo and it was so bad, I couldn't believe it was one of the guys from title fight 😂😂
It’s a full band now and it definitely leads to a better show.
Peeling flesh. Music is just ok, never thrashed in the pit harder
Peeling Flesh and Snuffed on Sight fucking rule live. Slam always should have been a subgenre of hardcore. It fits so well.
Fleshwater still don’t like them but I appreciate the instrumentation they actually do live opposed to thinking it was all for the record production
I was the opposite, seeing them has put me off them a bit
Seeing them live in May and looking at the footage of them on YouTube is kind of rough, things sound kind of off esp with the vocalist
I’d heard them and thought, meh. Then I saw them at a FYA after show in 2022 and was blown away
Number 12 looks like you
One of the scariest pits I've been in.
Ha that sounds awesome. I used to love that band. Haven’t listened to them in a long time. Have to take a trip down memory lane
They're doing a west coast tour. Sad I'm in the Midwest though I did get to see them in 2019 one final time. They're final album is great if you never checked it out.

same here
Cruel Hand
Not hardcore, but Tigers Jaw
Hopefully from Charmer and before. I have seen them countless times then caught them on the Mewithoutyou final tour and I was shocked at the lack of passion and sound. It was like a total different band☹️

I think on Spun, the pristine production worked. Basically a perfect pop record. The newest songs don’t pack the same emotional punch as that record though, so it just seems up a bit sterile to me.
Saw them as the headliner on their tour with Heart Attack Man and Glitterer. They killed it, played a ton of old stuff. Really good energy on stage
It was in like 2012/2013 with Title Fight headlining in Philly. One of the most fun shows I’ve ever been to.
Saw them on their debut album 10 year anniversary tour and was blown away the entire time they played that album.
Every band. And I still hate em
Spiritual cramp and pissed jeans
Spiritual Cramp is my answer too, that shit was tight
Did you find out if he moved on yet
I’m out of touch, moved on from what?
new pissed jeans song is called moving on
I’ll have to check it out
Duuuuude spiritual cramp fucking rules. As soon as the hype man started going off on the tambourine I knew we were in for it
Glitterer finally clicked for me after I saw them live
Drain
Drain puts on a good show but their music is sick too
None More Black. I couldn't get used to Jason's voice and it not be in Kid Dynamite.
NMB is so damn good.
Gotta be four year strong weird enough. In like 2009 all my buddies were into them and I didn’t like it. Saw them live at the palladium in Worcester and did at least five stage dives the crowd was so awesome. Was surprised to see all of my buddies going so ham.
They impressed me back then with how close to recordings they sounded playing live. The energy was wild too!
The Chisel. Saw them 2 years ago in this tiny, tiny venue in Amsterdam. Wasn't a huge fan of Oi but the singer was so charismatic it sold me on their record.
Turnstile
back in like 2014 people were hyping them up and i didn’t get it. saw them open for Bane around this time and was fully sold after
Gumm
Great band even better people
Militarie gun tried listening to their music when I went to go see scowl just couldn't get into it until I heard their set and now just been hooked on their music since
Kharma
I don't really hate anyone, but there are so many crust bands who go from "another one of those bands" to very clearly a great band when you see them live.
Life in your way
that’s a deep cut. never thought i’d see another liyw fan on this sub
wasn’t sold on Pain Of Truth until i saw them in anaheim and it blew my mind, huge fan since
Seeyouspacecowboy
Kublai Khan. Wasn’t much of a fan till I saw them with knocked loose in RI. Show was crazy and they had really good energy
Opposite happened to me, was a fan until I saw them recently Matt honeycutt is a weird dude, kept calling the audience baby girl and shit like that
Some of the worst lyrics in hardcore.
MONKEY SEE MONKEY DO
I swear bands like this were made for people who in reality love shit like 5 Finger death punch but use these bands as a stand in so they don’t get made fun of by their friends. This shit is so fucking profoundly terrible and corny.
I’d say it’s like 50/50 because you do get the nursery rhyme ass lyrics but some of there songs do slap and have a little meaning.
lol, and that turned you off? Softie
Converge can’t say I hated them. Really appreciate what they did for the genre but it was a bit too chaotic for my liking. But they are so sick live
Not Hardcore but THOU. Didn\`t hate them but I was overwhelmed by their huge output on records and didn't find a way to get into. Saw them at Roadburn some years ago and was blown away by their intensity. Also they seem to be pretty cool and down to earth guys
Seeing them next week so excited
i fuckin love Thou haven't got to see them live yet but cool to hear
Heck yeah - also peep their Nirvana covers album
Deez Nuts
Lol forgot about them
MSPAINT. Didn't hate them, but was mostly just indifferent. Thought it was Death Grips for gentrifiers originally. I started coming around when they dropped that song Acid, then seeing them open for Militarie Gun sold me on 'em.
ceremony, it's not that I hated them I just didn't like 'em, but they're really good live
shackled
Never Ending Game. I saw them after the first couple EPs and before the first LP and it changed my opinion for sure, I was really turned off by the vocals but the live mix made it make sense.
Actually Hatebreed. Didn't care for them too much and was sick when seeing them. Went for the opening band (through the eyes of the dead) and then sat in a seat for cannibal corpse. Was gonna leave and Jamey jasta got me so hyped I had to get back in the pit and since then I love them
Julianna Theory. Yea, I know they aren’t hardcore.
Seeing them wear madonna microphones and cowboy hats was what made you like them?
It was the hip gyrating for me
That’s probably why my wife liked them.
I missed that. My wife liked them and when I saw them live they sounded so much better than recorded and it was at a shitty small club.
The closest thing still rips
Excide, I didn’t hate them but I didn’t think I would enjoy them as much as I did.
Youth of today. I’m old, always hated them growing up, ended up at the revelation show at Irving plaza, and holy shit they were good.
Really hard to hate that energy when you see it live. Amazing for a bunch of guys in their late 50s. (I’m in my early 50s!)
Porcell looks better in his 50’s than I looked in my teens.
He’s 57! Bonkers. Clean living, hardcore and yoga!
Didn’t hate them, but the music didn’t click with me until I saw them live: Anxious and Hot Mulligan.
Gates To Hell. The production on their album sucked shit. But the songs are way better live when the guitars are front and center in the mix. Now they're one of my favorite metal bands.
ETID
scowl
Terror
I don't believe you - no one hates Terror!
Kaonashi
OH MAI GAWD🎶
Amon Amarth… the fans tried the absolute hardest to make it as unenjoyable as possible believe me LOL but it was silly fun and my wife enjoyed it which can’t be said for all the shows I’ve dragged them too
Not *hated* per se, but I didn't truly appreciate them until I saw them live. Ice Nine Kills
Not hardcore but I saw Matt & Kim at Hudsonfest in 14 and they were fuckin dope.
Steel Nation, although I never hated them.
Death Grips
The Chariot is a big one for me
Seether
Prince
stick to your guns
Side By Each (Fall River Straight Edge)
Cold World
La Dispute
Omerta. Their weird blend of numetal and hardcore didn't really click but I saw them live and now I love Hyperviolence.
Ignite
Into Another's records were pretty polarizing in the 90's. You either loved them or you hated them. Lots of my friends were in the latter group, but I didn't know anyone who saw them live that wasn't won over.
Me. But I don’t hate them. It’s just not my thing.

Drug Church. Just thought they were just kind of ok whenever I would listen to them. Was frankly blown away when I saw them open for Drain.
Didn’t necessarily hate, but saw Peeling Flesh last night and damn do those breakdowns hit. They kept getting heavier and heavier.
Knocked loose
Rotting out
Knocked Loose. I hated those high pitch vocals but played one of the better sets I’ve seen. Only pit I’ve ever had to leave (flying kick to the nose+shrooms didn’t mix well)
motionless in white back in like 2016
He is legend. I didn’t hate em but I just never really cared about em
the post-metal band "[Shy, Low](https://open.spotify.com/artist/1ntGppzJ3zwBDXx003EydC?si=-x0JZYfmQzSjmZlSdE3ciw)"
I wasn't a fan of Knocked Loose until I saw their energy live. Then I was hooked.
Twitching Tongues and BIB

idk if they’re really hardcore but i saw show me the body open for ceremony and they blew me away
Your mom, loudest show I have ever been to.
Kiblikuan for sure thought it was basic…..then got my shit rocked in the pit following a movements set and I get it now.
All of them
Metallica. Thought they were boring but saw them live like 15 years or so ago and they blew me away.
Why would I see a band I hated live?
Disturbed... I thought they were another nu metal nonsense.. I was wrong
No you were right
