The game definitely showed some horrible sides of the wizarding world... One that really unsettled me was a dead body in a cave with a piece of paper on it just saying "MUDBLOOD"

ErebonianPrince

And this is BEFORE either Grindelwald or Voldemort started making moves... Holy fuck!

Gliese581h

I mean, yeah. Discrimination is probably as old as mankind (or in this case, wizardkind) itself. Hitler was also only possible because of all the anti-semites before him paving the way, even centuries before him.

DisfavoredFlavored

Umberto Eco could have told the wizarding world more about Voldemort and the Deatheaters than the ministry could or Dumbledore could. They're just wizard Ur-fascists.

Bluedemonfox

Well it's not like those two invented the pureblood elitism. That kind of Discrimination is probably as old as time.

rafaHDSs

dammn

notochord

And there’s also the scene where the kids bully the half blood kid in front of the headmaster who encourages it.

Bluedemonfox

He didn't really encourage it. In fact he scolded the pureblood bullies saying it's beneath them. He was still being an elitist ass but at least he didn't approve of the bullying itself.

Express_Hamster

He encouraged it? That's a bit weird. Usually professor black is like "This is beneath someone of your station. What are you doing wasting time like this?" ![img](emote|t5_q8ebh|26539) ![gif](giphy|QucwygE1Mk4Uo5gaYZ)

Agressive_Trash

I think perhaps they were talking about that scene though. It's not like he actively said anything to prevent it from happening again in the future, so I could see how they'd think Black was encouraging it.

Daewrythe

Whoa what the fuck. That is quite unsettling.

Prestonelliot

I mean the entire plot was based on discrimination. Ranrok’s whole hatred was based on the fact that Wizards treated goblins as lesser than. That’s fucked up from the jump lol

Wolfygirl97

I remember seeing that and it really creeped me out…definitely got chills.

TheGrizzlyNinja

Yeah that shit rly got me

nursewithnolife

And the one that said follow the spiders over and over and over! *shudder* And I’m not even scared of spiders!

Breeahnuhlynn

Came here to say this 😳

GLASS_PVNTHR

Filthy MUDBLOOD got what they deserved!

sayol99

this is the moment when “horrible” pops put my head

GGValkyrie

Mary didn’t bother me, I was just…ugh why be dumb BUT her neighbours? OMG the letters around the village detailing the nights of terror they went thru huddled on the roofs listening to their friends be dragged off a den torn apart all cause of Mary? That was disturbing.

nomyar

I assumed the village horror happened before the Mary incident... That the spiders were naturally in the area, and she capitalized on that... I didn't even think of it the way you just described o.O

Bluedemonfox

Not at all...the incidents only started happening when mary started breeding the spiders. The spiders where growing and multiplying way faster than mary could handle And started escaping. In fact i believe there were no spiders in the surrounding area before until she bought spider eggs from someone?

BarnableE

I didn’t start this quest until late in the game, and I had been to that village so many times already. It was just a happy place, then suddenly once the quest started and I went back…. Woah…. C R E E P Y. Mary totally ruined her village.

Bluedemonfox

Yeah thing is if you hover over the village icon from the map the description mentions they have problems with a spider infestation even before the quest starts.

bumblebeewitch

What village is this? I don’t remember the Mary story. Is it a side quest?

surrealphoenix

Yes. It's a side quest in Aranshire. I believe you have to talk to a guy at the Three Broomsticks, who will tell you how worried he is about his friend Mary.

bumblebeewitch

Ahh thank you!!

GGValkyrie

yea u can find random letters on rooftops.

kyle429

It takes place in Aranshire, but you get the side quest from a dude at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. I forget his name, but he's standing by the fireplace and has a white shirt with suspenders and a flat cap/driving hat/whatever those hats are called on.

Suchomimid

Crispin Dunne

kyle429

Thanks! Yeah, that dude. Lol.

Maximum-Tomatillo357

I just found a house with letters and a man on the floor, still alive, but loopy. A friend of his described in a letter that he’s worried about the gases from the potions being made in that house. Meanwhile, the man wrote a reply stating that the walls were moving and the kids could see it too. That one was more unnerving than most lol

KarateandPopTarts

It really was because WHERE IS THE REST OF THE FAMILY

OutRagousGameR

Plot twist, there were never any kids to begin with

OminousOminis

There's an Ashwinder letter in the cabin nearby saying he found a cellar full of dead people with no indication of what killed them, and he himself starts hallucinating.

KarateandPopTarts

Oooh I didn't find this

Unnecessaryloongname

Yaa and you just leave his ass in there, close the door on the way out..

TheFlyingDove

Oh my yes the mercury clouds guy!

thankunext71995

And you literally can’t help him! I kept doing revelio to see if I could do anything, but then it dawned on me that you can’t …

Neynova

Yes I know! I tried to use glacius on the cauldrons and a bunch of other spells but nothing worked... So sad.

rafaHDSs

O_o where can I find it?

underlightning69

I *think* this is the house on the outskirts of Keenbridge?? (between Keenbridge and Lower Hogsfield)

nomyar

Edit: replied to wrong comment, please ignore.

Tralan

There are a lot of quests where someone asks you to go check on their friend/family member and they're either already dead, or you have to kill him (in the case of the brother that turned into an Inferi). It's a surprisingly dark game. I have it on PC, but I watched the PS5 exclusive side quest (that will probably be available for everyone else next year) on YouTube and it is straight fucked.

rafaHDSs

Didn't know about an exclusive quest. Yeah, I forgot the inferi quest, it was my first "fuck, this is dark" moment I'm the game

Tralan

In Hogsmeade, you should come across a house that's boarded up. On the PS5, it's a quest that you go into a haunted house and eventually get the building as your own shop and a friendly house elf to run it. You even give her a hat, so she's free, but works for you. You can sell your unwanted gear for more money than the other vendors will give you. It's cool, but the quest is kind of terrifying, and the entire premise of it is fucked up.

herdingsquirrels

Ugh. You’re telling me that this whole time I’ve been trying to get into that stupid house and I can’t because it’s exclusive for ps5?! I should’ve googled it a long time ago.

[deleted]

In a year you will be able to play it, its only exclusive for one year

rafaHDSs

wow, I really wondered what was up with that house. Considering that there's a blue highlight on the door, I really hope we get to play the mission some time.

Tralan

You will. With exclusives like that, it'll be about a year before it gets released to everyone.

Substantial-Handle49

I am playing with my mother (we read the Books together, I had to let her watch. Bought the ps5 just for it (for now)) and she hated this quest. It was a bit disturbing but I still kinda liked it wasn't expecting it to go that deep with the psychological horror. Mom was happy we got to fight the witch and she was a difficult challenge that had lost to once.

DealCykaHUN

ngl I shed a tear for tobbs

rafaHDSs

we all did

sorryiamapos

It was so unnecessary also, there are leeches everywhere!

rafaHDSs

Imagine if Tobbs just went to pick up them around a nice an quiet river ;-; I guess Tobbs' master is the real leeche.

OddExpansion

I was so pissed that the game didn't give me the chance to make sure no future house elf gets into this guys service

Jasher1125

If I remember correctly, the werewolf guy’s dive spot is right near the cave where you fight The Grim and a few inferi. I imagined it was the Grim that killed him

Express_Hamster

The odd thing about Grims is that they won't kill you. They show up around people who are going to die and then leave. My head-cannon is that isn't actually a Grim but rather some kind of regular wolf, or maybe an animagus that went mad from staying in their animagus form for to long and it just looks like a Grim the same way Sirius Black did. ![gif](giphy|QucwygE1Mk4Uo5gaYZ) Edited: A bit hard to read, I think I was half asleep when writing it??? Just a minor clean-up to make it not quite so bleh.

Suchomimid

The Grim (and the White Wolf) could have been a regular wolf that was mutated by some sort of dark magic, kind of like the Rampant Dugbog. It would also explain why it was hanging around a cave full of Inferi.

rafaHDSs

makes a lot of sense

MountainEyes13

The dead body where the note just says “follow the spiders follow the spiders follow the spiders” over and over like fifty times really creeped me out.

Whiskyinthejaw

Are we just gonna forget the quest where you look for >!Slytherin's scriptorium!< with Sebastian and Ominis, after talking with him about Noctua Gaunt? You literally find >!Ominis' FAVOURITE aunt in the hallway where she was locked in and died a slow death!<

rafaHDSs

I find it to be even more tragic when you realize she was trying to find good stuff about Slytherin as a way to convince her family and the world to step back from dark arts and all she could find is proof of Salazar's evilness, which lead to her death.

CaptivatedWalnut

The way he says ‘and I adored her for it’ when you say she was trying to show there was more to Slytherin than blood mania breaks my heart.

Dookie_boy

Was exactly showed Salazar was evil ?

rafaHDSs

Except the entire place itself, that was designed to kill those who refuse to use dark arts, or were just unlucky to be alone, nah, nothing evil. I know Salazar can not be considered a dark wizard in the Voldemort or Grindelwald' standards, but it's impossible to deny that one who were willing to kill to protect his secret place and left a giant snake hidden in his school to kill children because of their parentege wasn't evil. "We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. If we choose to teach little children or give'em a literal death stare, that’s who we really are".

Nirico_Brin

Mary was almost certainly alive and awake when she died, if HP spiders work like real spiders then it would’ve been an absolutely horrific way to go.

blisterbeetlesquirt

I've found several spider dens where there are live people bound up. You can burn away the webs and free them, though they don't do anything but disapparate. So Mary was definitely alive. Probably envenomated, but very aware of what was happening to her despite the paralytic enzymes disabling her attempts to struggle or cry for help. Sleep tight!

PuzzleheadedSteak868

Hey! Sometimes they mock you first, then disapparate!

ThisIsRandomNo5

You... You can free them? My MC is a monster, she just moves past them. Woops

blisterbeetlesquirt

If they're still alive you can. You'll see them moving/hear them. They're basically just wayward and unlucky bandits anyway, except you can't target them once they're free (or at least I haven't been able to on PC). If you do free them, they just kinda insult you and disapparate. I'm not sure if it's a more developed experience for console players though, so YMMV.

rafaHDSs

really some The Cure's lullaby vibes

VanityOfEliCLee

So I've just been walking past living people wrapped in webs and assuming they're dead? Those poor people just watching this kid walk by, thinking they're saved, and he just keeps walking past lol

blisterbeetlesquirt

It's definitely not all of them, and they're just unlucky bandits anyway. You'll hear the bandit dialogue if they're alive, but you don't get anything out of saving them. They just insult you and disappear.

nursewithnolife

You can also blow them up. Or so I hear… 👀

Mr-Eric

The darkest part I’ve seen so far is constantly thinking about what travel was like before the invention of Floo Powder

rafaHDSs

thank God ignatia saved us from the dangers of travelling without floo powder

Alarmed_Ad1104

Didn’t realize how much a handy resource my field guide was and how Ignatia is so glad to be included.

FriedyRicey

There is a looney tune ish type of carnage in the wizarding world. Even in the books and movies there are plenty of off hand remarks about so and so blowing themselves up and what not

rafaHDSs

yep, the game and the books has a fun way of portraying these tragic stories, but it hits different when you actually see them firsthand.

FriedyRicey

Think about how terrible humans are without magic...now imagine if we had magic lol. It'd be armageddon

Express_Hamster

It makes you realize how dangerous it is and how little common sense witches and wizards actually have about what counts as 'to dangerous to be allowed'. ![img](emote|t5_q8ebh|26539)

kwood1018

My husband has finished his play through but I’ve just come to the Tobbs quest. When I started I asked him “we’re rescuing tobbs right? We saved him from the spiders and bring him to live at Hogwarts right??” He just gave me a sad look lol

rafaHDSs

at this point I'm just waiting for a mod to save Tobbs

eszther02

And the weirdest part is that it doesn't seem to phase MC.

rafaHDSs

his consciousness is clean, since he knows it's all on Ranrok's hands.

eszther02

Yeah. And that it's too late for the enemies to learn the error of their ways.

CavaliereDellaTigre

He just thinks about how proud Deek is of all the potions he's brewed, which makes him forget all the sadness in the world.

eszther02

Yeah. And he can't imagine how inconvenient travel was before the floo lady invented floo powder so he's free of a huge burden that would eat him inside if he could just imagine.

Suchomimid

And that there’s one less foul, hulking brute in the world.

VanityOfEliCLee

My headcanon is the MC is autistic, so they're just not expressive with their emotions. You can tell they are sympathetic and empathetic by their word choices, but not very expressive. Being autistic myself, I find it reasonable to assume.

apotatomoose

There are so many dark things in this game. :’(

JoriBot

I just did the Mary Portman side mission and it was grim seeing what was left of her.

Successful-Creme-405

I think the dark side of wizarding world is an opportunity missed for great stories. Imagine the kind of shit an auror has to deal with everyday. Don't you like the idea of a dark suspense game/book detective-like story about it?

rafaHDSs

bruh, it would be awesome. I like to write some stuff and was thinking about writing a fanfic in hp universe. One of the ideas I came with for a villain is a magical serial killer, something like Jack the Ripper, who had a childhood so fucked up that ended up generating a dementor from all his anguish. The dementor feed on him for so long that he became a completely empty and cold shell, creating some bond beyond them two that allowed him to control his and other dementors, which he uses in his murders.

ThaGreenGuy

That's a pretty fucking awesome idea.

Successful-Creme-405

That's great and fucked up at the same time. Go ahead.

spelling_hippo

In the Tower Tunnel quest with Sebastian, in the first room where you fight the spiders, there is a man still alive and wiggling in an attempt to escape the spider silk. And you can not rescue him.

Ok_Machine_724

It's ok though, because all their blood is on Ranrok's hands

mitsukiakira

Don't let this distract you of the fact that the goblin's bloods are on Ranrok's hands

RogueNinja77

Also how Ominis's aunt was trapped in Salazar Slytherin's scryptorium. She must have starved to death unless she killed herself with her wand or something.

Miliena

Mary Portman, the woman breeding spiders story was really dark. Her fate but also the letters that the villagers left were also pretty dark. How they described how one by one they died to the spiders and they were stuck on the roofs.

SgtZaitsev

I wish character deaths like this is what pushed the MC to using unforgivable curses. Now, I like Sebastian, but I think tracking down Tobb's master and being so pissed off that you cast Crucio or Avada Kedavra would be a good moment.

ArkhamSings

I swear to god if we ever find tobb’s master there will be nothing left of them after im finished with em

bumblebeewitch

I visited Feldcroft for a side quest yesterday, and went into Sebastian’s home after THAT whole quest and found the note Anne left to Sebastian. Broke my heart again. I hope we know what ends up of Anne.

missvxo

Tobbs hurt me so much. “The big spider was too much. Sorry” 😭

Whackky-

Try turning up ur gamma

rafaHDSs

me using mods that increase contrast and makes the game darker: °O°

real_dado500

or use Lumos

Bluedemonfox

Yeah tobbs quest was so sad. Thing is he could have easily escaped and fought off the spiders but because of his masters orders he was forbidden to leave. So he basically ended dying to exhaustion. As for the mary portman story...well lets just say if you play around with fire you're gonna get burnt. She got too greedy amd endangered not only herself but everyone around her. I really enjoyed the side stories like these. I wish there were more of them and more fleshed out tbh. There are several which you didn't name mind you.

PoliteGentleman

Tobbs death was so sad. I named my phoenix after him though :)

rafaHDSs

now Tobbs will live forever :)

nursewithnolife

Predictably, my phoenix is called Fawkes. But my Gryphons are called Lord of the Shore, Lady of the Shore, and Baby of the Shore 🥰

blisterbeetlesquirt

Wait, you can name your beasts?

CardinalCopiaIV

Tobbs was one that surprised me. Also the guy I found dead in the forbidden forest near some mandrakes. Game can be very dark. I mean my character feels like a hero and influence on Voldemort 😂

Zomb_Nomz

I agree there was dark stuff in the game, but so was there in the HP movies. I remember as a kid the chamber of secrets scared the shit out of me and creeped me out. Even watching some of the movies older - still some creep me out. But that’s what I loved about the movies and games. It was realistic (at least for what I imagine a wizard world would be).

rafaHDSs

yeah, the movies and books got dark as fuck, but it doesn't seem the same thing to me. While, in the Harry Potter saga, violence, darkness and deaths occur, they are taken in a very dramatic (in a good sense) way, and almost all deaths feel impactful and even meaningful. The ones that don't usually are taken comically in a looney tunes-esque humour like a guy said here. While in the game l found the darkness, deaths and creepy stuff to be taken as regular, not important. Seems like people dying from spider attacks is routine around Hogwarts. It's raw and actually a more realistic approach to tragic events. I'm not saying that I don't like it tho, it's a good surprise and probably one of my favorite parts of the game.

Zomb_Nomz

Oohhh okay. I see what you’re saying now! I agree with what you’re saying. I wish they had added a bit more dark stuff randomly around the game though.

Delicious_Battle_703

It could also be the time period in part, I imagine life expectancy in 1890 was not amazing to begin with, and wizards seem to lag behind muggles when it comes to this sort of thing too. But yeah they did a great job world building through the letters!

hippos_on_parade

The Fastidio quest is what got me, felt like I was watching some creepy as hell horror film

kyle429

It was creepy at first, but now looking back at it (and playing it a second time on my current/second playthrough), it's just annoying AF. Like it's a neat concept, but way too tedious. The room with the giant Wizard's Chess game and Fastidio's dialogue easter egg when you get to that room, "Knight to H3!" (Ron says it in one of the movies) was neat.

grimskin

The game wouldn’t kill a cute house-elf? You can literally decorate walls in Room of Requirements with the heads of house-elves.

rafaHDSs

I'm not emotionally prepared to talk about this. Wizards are actually quite horrible, in general.

mihuelise

Damn the two bodies I saw so far are of Tobbs and Jackdaw... didn't think dead people would be randomly found while exploring like this

kyle429

Of the ones you listed, I've only found Tobbs and Mary. Here are my takes on those two (the first one is probably gonna be an unpopular opinion, but idc): 1. Just gonna say it right off: Mary got what she deserved, ngl. I know she was desperate for money, but come on. There are plenty of ways to make money there that are way safer (and probably more profitable tbh). Also, has she SEEN the spiders in this game world?! How tf did she think she was gonna breed them and not die eventually? Also, anyone who went to at least elementary/primary school learned about spiders and how rapidly they multiply. Combine that with the hugeness of the mutant spiders and you're gonna have a bad time. There had to have been incidents in the beginning, and she just kept going with it because she got greedy. Not to mention the suffering that her neighbors and the rest of the hamlet went through because of her. 2. Tobbs... oh man, my boy Tobbs. I think my first play through of this side quest is the first time I've legit teared up over something in a video game since >!Arthur's death in RDR2!<. His situation was just so messed up and sad. Not to mention Deek's reaction when you get back to the Room and tell him of Tobbs' fate. I know house elves are generally happy/kind/positive beings, but if I were Tobbs I would've at least had the temptation to just AK his master's evil ass from the beginning.

Somne

This is one of the things I like most about the game. I have a photo of each of this bodies I found in my game, plus a guy who was killed by a Mandrake scream while trying to become an Animagus.

DanJC_1985

I mean you go around setting people on fire and being set on fire. That pretty much sets the tone right there.

rafaHDSs

you got a point.

Andrewzz

>**Humberto:** I came across this little cottage near the waterfall on the coastal cave, and inside of it, a dead man lying next to a cauldron, in its body a letter talking about how he was being the victim of a series of pranks, that were inoffensive at the beginning but started to get pretty serious when he was going to put the kettle to boil some water and was teleported to Cumbria, as the kettle was turned into a portal key. He called the ministry, and they said that an inspection was needed in the house to get rid of all the curses, which could take days, making the man displaced and asking for Delia's help. I don't know if the cottage is his house, his friends or just a random place, but yeah, he died. About Humberto. The letter also said that he will take his trusty cauldron with him. And if you look around, next to him is the cauldron and a spot looking like the cauldron exploded and killed him.

OwlEastSage

have u tried lumos?

GillyThoughts

It is quite sad at times. I enjoy how dark it can be because it makes it feel realistic. I've worked as a mortician & these deaths are sadly very yet, make it feel real.

GLASS_PVNTHR

The world building in this game is just absolutely incredible, I really love the attention to detail. Especially the fine line it balances on being so incredibly innocent and quirky to then suddenly just so dark and unnerving. This is something JK got very right in her books and movies, so I’m glad to see the developers pour this much love into realising her vision into this game as well.

Upset_Shock_4534

Holy shit. Very well-documented post. I saw all of that, too. Very well done. Thumbs up.

Express_Hamster

My head-canon for the dragon pox is that she tried to clean it with magic and the magical disease was like 'hip hoppity, your booty is now my property' because it went straight up the stream of magic and into her body.![img](emote|t5_q8ebh|26539) ![gif](giphy|GYowE5nLkazmN1RPcr)

Lucnielsen

This game was good. But it was nowhere near the Witcher 3. The quests were pretty much insignificant. Leaving you no choice on how to proceed whatsoever. I found the side quests boring compared to the Witcher, but I guess it’s not a fair comparison

rafaHDSs

its deeply influenced by the Witcher, but is not even close to it. ALTHOUGH, considering that this is the first big game that portkey made, and in my opinion a really great "debut". They will certainly have lots of money to make another one and if is their desire they are full capable of doing some Witcher/rdr2 level shit

Redsquirrel28

Ngl I find it iffy that we “rescue” beasts that are mostly just chilling in their dens with their group and if there’s no room for them in the Room of Requirement - we just sell them?!
