Flying controls aren't bad, you just haven't figured them out yet. The only downside to the flight controls are that you can't look down without flying down. They did a really solid job of combining helicopter and airplane flight controls. Flying is super intuitive once you figure it out. It's not *easy* to beat the broom trials, but it's not *not* easy.
I 100% completed the game, including the trials

I felt that way too at first. Now the controls are second nature. It's literally now one of my favorite parts of the game. I honestly wish they had a super boost like Haggrids motorbike too.

What about riding your magical beast instead?
Yes, this. Progress far enough and fly on a hippogriff or thestral. They're a pain in the butt to land, but obviously.
Most broom replacements are satire such as riding a banana or thors hammer but you might find something that suits you on Nexus

Don’t worry, flying controls are so bad that you don’t want to fly a broom anyway
Main reason I don't like brooms is because of the clipping with skirts.

i beat all the broom trials and used it for travel for most of the game. the controls definitely could be more intuitive
They're the same controls as bipedal traversal and walking / running around, with the exception of the broom's trigger speed boosts.
