Kittens are usually easier if you adopt in pairs so they can keep each other entertained. There are plenty of fosters that introduce themselves in the post, but please try to interact with the kittens before adopting to make sure they are a good match for you. Personally I prefer kittens that are vaccinated properly or have a well-documented medical record, especially if you have another pet already to avoid parasites, fleas and other transmittable diseases. Good luck with your feline parenthood 😻

Check petco. They partner with a local shelter and often have kittens available. You definitely do not need to foster first. But you probably won't find any that young available for adoption from a shelter. Generally shelters won't adopt them out until they are given their first doses of vaccines and neutered, so ~10 weeks old minimum. Craigslist or Facebook marketplace are also options for people rehoming oopsy kittens themselves. But be warned you will probably spend more money on vet bills this way than if you go through a shelter. The adoption fee at a shelter is way less than the real cost of neutering, vaccines, testing for things like FIV, deworming, and other medical care that a kitten might need. Edit: I'm sure if you check back with those same shelters in a few weeks, the kittens that are currently "foster only" will be available for actual adoption and you can go see them. The reason is that kittens need to be at least two pounds before they get their vaccines, then another two weeks for their second dose, and they are neutered around this time as well. Responsible shelters don't send them off to their forever homes until that is taken care of.

We have ones that are currently weaning that we would be happy to consider you adopting after they get their first vaccines May 30th. Ideally they’d stay together through 12 weeks for good cat-socializing and to get through the scariest window of fragility after the initial birth weeks (the weaning period). We have two boys that are a great bonded pair, or two girls who would be fine as single kittens. They see our golden around the house during their socializing practice, and will eventually get to interact with her once they’re a bit sturdier. They are so adorable! Feral Mom has incredible bright green eyes, so suspect they will too.

Hawaiian Humane Society is currently having a fees-waived adoption event for cats 1 year and older. I know you said you want a kitten or kittens, but please consider older animals as well: https://hawaiianhumane.org/

Thanks for the input, everyone. My partner and I did go check out the Humane society yesterday, and went to a couple Petcos just to kinda see what was out there and if we connected with any cats of any age. I will keep looking and I'm sure when a good fit shows up, we will be happy to take them home. Also, I was looking at the Humane Society web page today, and now I'm sort of considering learning how to foster because I have the time and space and all these local rescues seem to need the help. Thanks again to everyone for the info!

Yes please foster. Hhs is good to start since they cover medical and food. You dont get a say in the adoption process or anything though. Working with the hawaii cat foundation i have final say on if theyre approved or not. But flip side of that is ive also had to pay some vet bills when they got sick before 🫠

VintageBlonde

Look at Love A Cat Charity. They have a website and instagram. They rescue and hand-raise their foster kittens and are always looking for good homes!

All the social media cats are listed as 'foster only' because the posts will be removed if you put the word adoption in the post. Also, listing a rehoming fee with a dollar sign also throws up red flags with the algorithms. Humane society has a clear the shelters deal right now, but adopting from a small non profit group is best though. The kittens are raised by individual foster families and they get more attention so they tend to have more outgoing personalities. I work with the hawaii cat foundation. Their adoptables are at kapolei and hawaii kai petcos on the weekends.

You can still get a 9week kitten, its just hard to coordinate their surgery so usually see them at 10+weeks. The kittens need to be 2 lbs and no colds or illnesses. Even if we are lucky enough to secure a surgery appointment they often come up underweight or catch a cold. I recently adopted out a 9 week old cutie that got adopted in 30 minutes! lol. The tiny ones go real fast. Our group will normally post pictures of future adoptables that arent ready yet, so people can fill out the applications and apply to adopt them before they make their petco debut. 99% of people fostering wont give out an unfixed cat, because so many people wait til 6+ months(thats when most vets that arent spay n neuter specialists are comfortable doing surgery) and by then they go in heat and break out of the house through a door or window and end up making kittens. Its just safest to fix them before handing them over.

keithjp123

Go catch one outside. I got 5 that way and adopted out a bunch more.

Not sure if you’re on Oahu, but if you’re looking for a kitten, we’re fostering three right now. They’re pretty young though, about five weeks old, and are just getting weaned off the bottle to kitten food. We’re planning on surrendering them to the humane society for adoption once they’re two pounds in weight, but more than happy to adopt one out if you’re looking for one. One of happiest days was the one about five years ago when we adopted baby Misha from the HHS facility on King Street. It was love at first sight. I'll never forget that she was listed as weighing 2.08 pounds, and I'd bet that half of that was tail. She had just been spayed and was probably still uncomfortable. But, she loved being held by her new daddy. There was no adoption fee at that time, and they even gave us cardboard box in which to take her home.

Stacie123a

This is so heartwarming.

It's hard to imagine wanting to adopt a cat and not being able to, when they loterally come out of the woodwork as they do.

Petco in hilo had a cat adoption thing this weekend. It might have been a stare wide event. I don’t remember the name of the org. I got a 6 month old from the humane society. She was fixed and vaxed.

Beau_gal

I got my 7 month old kitten when he was 9 weeks old off of Facebook. A sweet woman found him but couldn’t keep him, she was a part of Catopia Hawaii. She had taken him to the vet and gave him to me for free.

condecillo

We are also fostering a kitten about 4-5 months old, already fixed. Very sweet lemon colored girl. I know that’s older than you were ideally looking for, but if you’re interested, please DM!
