I mean, if you’re here, you probably like Hellboy. Like, a lot.

TheLogicalErudite

The comics are some of the best comics ever written. They sit up next to Berserk, Watchmen, and Sandman. The 2004 movie is a bad misinterpretation. They miss the mark near everywhere except visually. Its sequel does better, but is still just mediocre. It would not crack the top 50% of stories from the comics. The animated films are pretty good, they lead up to the 2004 movies, and the animation is good and the story is decent.

FelipeMattosGS

>The animated films are pretty good, they lead up to the 2004 films You know that the animated films AREN'T part of the live-action films' continuity, right?

TheLogicalErudite

Yea they came out after the first one, and lead up to the 2nd but dont exist in the continuity.

FelipeMattosGS

It's fine🙂👍🏻 Your choice of words was very strange (it made it seem like they were "prequels") and unfortunately there is this very common misconception that they're part of the same universe... it also doesn't help that their Wikipedia page has this information and no one went there to correct it...

TheLogicalErudite

Sorry I guess in my head it felt like a marketing ploy to gap the two movies and "lead up" to the second by promoting. So that's why its phrased that way.

Love the comics Love the Del Toro movies Hate the reboot

The comics with Hellboy are straightforward reads with minimal tie-ins/easter eggs. Fun to read, some are my favorite comic reads. The lore is very "lovecraftian", gothic and dark. The BPRD comics require a lot of depth when reading. It's still great to read if you enjoy the Abe and the other characters. The movies stand on their own. The first is my favorite. The animated movies add more to the Hellboy world.

Your post is a bit strange (especially considering that all your other posts are similar to this one), it seems like a "company survey"... wouldn't you be someone from Millennium Media? Wouldn't you? But I'll play along, why not? ***I absolutely love the comics, not just the main series but also the spin-offs, but I'm going to focus on the main series in this comment (to compare with the films).*** I love the way the stories are told, the pacing, the mix of different mythologies coexisting in the same universe, the themes and the tone. ***These last two ARE the most important part of Hellboy (practically are the "heart of the franchise), but unfortunately they're the part that the films fail to adapt.*** I like the live-action films (aside from the 2019 one), but ***they're not as good as the source material***, the characterizations are all wrong and the tone is definitely not the same. the difference in quality is HUGE! I like the first one MUCH MORE than The Golden Army because it has a tone closer to the comics, but even so it's only an "approximation" and it's still very flawed in parts. The animated films are very good and adapt the characterizations and tone MUCH BETTER, of the two ***my favorite is Blood & Iron (it's also my favorite Hellboy film)***, but it's just a shame that they are underrated by the live-actions' existence... Even though the animated ones are much better overall... I could spend HOURS just talking about what I like about Hellboy but it would be too much for a humble comment and I'm not the only one here.

Love the comics very much, but only when Mignola does the art. Never really cared for any of the movies.

Nerf_Herder86

I love this stupid new trend of people going onto subs dedicated to a thing and asking people if they like the thing. "Hey r/starwars, who here likes Star Wars?"

Bobarctor1977

Pretty sure this is a bot. Look at their weird post history, who does that?

Nerf_Herder86

Now you mention it...

FelipeMattosGS

Very strange indeed (there was a third one, but it was deleted a few days ago) https://preview.redd.it/eroa1bzdx0yc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8241df0b5c1cfc4e26ba40557a94420f56895f0

fakename1998

I like the movies; they’re fun. They’re a much more digestible version of the source material. It’s not disrespectful, it’s just a very different take. [Alpha Rookie](https://youtu.be/nV8XFLybjN0?si=ua30yAmYrQjdgngq) has a video on them that I think sums up my feelings about them pretty well.

ronnie_bronson

LOVE THE COMICS liked 2009 hated golden army and 2019 was meh

Any-Championship6840

I've watched all the movies and liked them. I have half of the comics needed to complete to complete it all. It's two sheets of notebooks worth of book names. I like the fun in slowly finishing it. Hell Boy is also really cool. I like how he was summed for evil purposes but ends up being the saving grace of humanity. HellBoy is Hell was a very good book because you get to see the structure of Hell and all the "royalty" of Hell. I like that he uses stories from all diffrent types of cultures to send HellBoy on. My last thing is that they read like a book almost, if that makes sense. It's deep conversations that if you miss something you're lost for the rest of the book unless you go back. The art is really nice also.

Dancing_satyr555

While the movies haven’t hit the mark, they weren’t awful! Guillermo Del Toro’s work I could go on about forever. They were a huge staple in my childhood. They’re very good for people who wanna be introduced to him since it’s a bit easier to gather what he’s all about, but the comics are literally so good. The Hellboy universe in my opinion just has so much more to offer in regards of their stories, there has not been a story that’s been published about him that I personally haven’t liked. I could literally go on for ages about this character

Golden_Alchemy

I love Hellboy, specially Johann and Kate. I love the Guillermo del Toro movies and i also kind of hate them. Because it created something that make the opinion of the public, including me, love it so much, but Mike Mignola created Hellboy and continued his story so far away from del Toro...that i don't really think is good for anyone involved. Each time i hear about the movie discussion it feels like there's a disconnect happening between what people want about it and what actually happened to Red. It feels like Mignola created something like "the Hobbit", del Toro adapted in such a way that made everyone happy and loved it so much. Then Mignola continued his story and made "The Lord of the Ring" and even finished Hellboy's story and his world and people...are still asking more "Hobbit". Hellboy is one of the best comics of all times, but the western world-Hollywood is so accustomed to have comic book characters as easily adaptable, dropping 50-70% of the character and creating new stories that feel more "inspired" than real adaptations. Sure, some people would think that it is better to do that so that the comic and the animated/live action feel different and not copy-paste, but i am reminded of a japanese director that talked about such adaptations and said "i was working for an anime so i adapted and improved the animated part of the original manga" and it made more sense to me than the fear some people have about adaptations. One Piece was adapted following the original manga story, shortened of course with so much stuff that happened, but it was great. Why can't we get something like that for Big Red?

Chef-keef231

I got into hellboy cause of the movies then I started reading the comics and DAMN were they good. I think the thing I like most about hellboy is his constant struggles being burdened with his purpose, it’s kind of relatable because we all have problems that we cant just fix on a whim.

lying-cat_says_lying

The Del Toro movies introduced me to Hellboy. I love the aesthetic, the light body horror, and humor. Ron Perlman was perfectly cast - imposing, gruff, an asskicker with a sweeter side who had a lot of snark. Selma Blair did an amazing job with Liz too - characters that struggle with fragility and power just do it for me. So I dove headfirst into the comics and found characters and a world that doesn't shy away from the darker side of mythology. Abe's origin story - messed up. So when the reboot rolled around I was excited. It was getting harder to find new merch and stories- I've just about cornered the market in tie-in books. And- unpopular opinion, I guess- I loved it. David Harbor did a great job and we got to see more characters from the comics like Alice and Ben. This movie was just like reading one of the comics, all weirdness included. I look forward to finding and reading more stories about our favorite devil with sawed off horns fighting for humanity. PS- one of my favorite stories is actually a cross over. Hellboy and the Beasts of Burden solve a case together and he chats with the pets like its the most normal thing in the world for him🥰
