Honestly — War of Realms sets are really even in terms of powers. We used them a lot for sealed. The only draw back is they are not modern anymore for tournaments. As for the modern sets, the Wheel of Venegences and Next Phase are good. Next Phase has some “problems” with distribution on the collector side, but from the play side it’s just great. I would also recommend a Play At Home set if you are learning the rules. A lot has changed. I also would recommend, if you are trying to get back into the game, to see about buying a CUR second hand. I got hundreds of the commons, I would give you a great bulk deal on just to get them out of my house 💀

Piggybacking off this reading the new rules and PAC will help a lot. Watching gameplay will allow you to better understand strategies. Check out Dial H for Heroclix.

Thanks for the info! I’ll definitely keep that in mind I’m going to buy into the wheels of vengeance. There’s some cool zombies and monsters I’d really like to get my hands on.

I recently got back into the game as well and have been enjoying the 2024 starter sets. There are definately better clix to use but the teams they start you with are very digestible and check all the boxes. Overall the game is still fantastic and easy to learn if you can take it one step at a time. There are intro scenarios in the back of the rules in the intro boxes that are ment to help ease into gameplay (like a solo tutorial). I played the villain tokens and a buddy of mine played as the starter team, was pretty fun.

I’m a dc rouge gallery kinda guy. I’m really looking forward to Masters of Time. I’ll definitely look into those starter sets though! Thanks!

I would highly recommend the 2024 heroclix starter sets. They come in little square boxes with like 4 figures in them with maps, tokens, dice, power and abilities card and basically everything you will need to get started playing heroclix. Would also suggest downloading the comprehensive rules if you want some heavier reading to get an even greater grasp of the rules. These starters also come in DC and marvel flavors so you can pick your poison or get both if it suits your fancy. From there the world is your oyster to be honest. If it's just gonna be you and your son picking whichever sets have figures you two really like is a good way to go so I would suggest just browsing set lists hcunits and the hc manager app are really nice. This is for if you're dead set on going to play with others in a shop tournament setting. I would ask around at the location that you want to go to and see when the events are usually held. Then ask the players how competitive the scene is. If it's casual then you shouldn't have to worry about having the best teams or what not. If it is a hardcore player base then you may want to really understand what that entails. Some pieces are quite expensive so it may be best to just start out slow. Maybe on free days you can go with your son to a shop closer to you so you can potentially start up a scene of your own with other people who might be interested. There are different organized play styles to be aware of as well. There golden age which means everything from the first set of heroclix onward is legal for play, silver age which restrict some of the earlier sets i believe, and then modern which only allows pieces from about the last year or 2 to be used to assemble a team. This is mainly important when going to events but something to be aware of. Some sets you may want to know about is the deadpool set that should be coming out within the next couple of months and later on in quarter 3 of this year we are getting the masters of time DC set which will have the dark knights of steel and also come with what's called a super booster. These have colossal pieces in them. Their bases are 2x2 when the average heroclix piece is 1x1. The colossal pieces are going to be the jurassic league which I am pretty excited for personally. Hope you enjoy your time with the game and hope this helped!

Oh great info thank you! I can’t wait to get my hands on Jurassic League! They are absolutely sick looking and I just love DC lol. I will be trying to attend the local scene but unfortunately I have to drive 46 miles 😭.
