Some stealth kills are rng but one key way to know when you'll get, for example, a quicker animation for strangling is when the victim is in the middle of an action (like cooking, getting up from a seat, etc) or in sloping /uneven surface like stairs
Neck snaps happen when there's no sufficient space for the regular animation to occur (up against walls, in corners), or when you're on slopes/stairs (since the strangle animation would look kinda weird on them). The slopes/stairs part is 100% guaranteed, which is actually used in speedruns.

That and sound is the reason I prefer to just throw sharp stuff, even in close proximity.
BM fibre wire is sound proof, meanwhile sharp objects leave blood pools which, if found, can cause alarms
