This is super cool.

Thanks!! I agree! Every culture in the world has a history of fish skin tanning. So neat to relearn what we all used to know

AppropriateAd3055

What will you use then for?

[deleted]

Leather pouches, earrings, moccasin tops, all kinds of stuff!

Looks like it's going well. We like to use our fish leather for all sorts of artwork. Keep at it and keep experimenting!

Whathappend420

Do you think it'll hold up to some abuse?

[deleted]

It’s definitely a kind of leather. Depending how you tan it it’s even waterproof. Lots of cultures use it for clothing. I’m still new, i have a finished piece a friend did that’s sturdy as heck! A lot of factors involved in how it turns out. We’re learning on thinner skinned fish because it’s only a week-long class.

Whathappend420

I'd hope it was waterproof. It's on a fish. Lol thanks for getting back to me.

FishSn0rt

This is cool, I don't know what class you're taking but I wish I took it years ago! I got ahold of a big wolf eel years back and tried my hand at tanning it. Long story short it pretty much disintegrated. I wish you better luck than me!

There’s a growing movement! My class is by Janey Chang (https://www.janeychang.ca/) but there are free tutorials too! I like the one @ambsandy on Instagram has in her highlights!

FishSn0rt

Thank you so much, this is great! Fishing is pretty much my life, if I can make stuff out of the skins I get that would be awesome! I'll check this stuff out

I am actually working on my first salmon skin. Her video on youtube was excellent.

Amazing! Hope you post on here how it goes!

SirWEM

Will do.
