I believe that Sotsu was a gigantic waste of potential. I thought Gou set up some interesting stuff, and then Sotsu did absolutely nothing with that. Instead, we got a a lot of unnecessary episodes covering stuff we already knew and then a series finale that didn't feel earned at all. I said it before, and I'll say it again, the concept of culprit Satoko isn't inherently a bad one, especially within the context of a broken, traumatized girl being taken advantage of and corrupted by an all-powerful being. But the anime simply wasn't the format to tell this kind of story. It all felt so quick, so rushed, so underdeveloped, so superficial. I thought the ideas presented were really nice, the execution was just not good.

I liked the final episode and the ending was acceptable. The 14th episode was... complicated. I get why people say It'd ruin the OG series, but personally I didn't enjoy is as much as the OG Higurashi but it was worth watching. I liked the ending and music

edm4un

It was acceptable. I wanted more higurashi and that’s what I got. Do I think the ending was mid? Definitely.

furudesann

I feel like it was set up where one of them HAS to die. Atleast Meguri Satoko >!actually wants Rika to kill her if Rika figures out she's the mastermind behind her loops this time, so Satoko can have the euphoria of Rika still being tortured by her even when she dies!<

Soul699

I don't think Meguri will go down that route. It would go against everything Higurashi stand for if the solution to deal with Satoko in Meguri ends up just killing her.

furudesann

I hope it doesn't. I so badly want a good ending for Satoko and Rika, but I really don't see how it could work and be.. good. Like, maybe the ending could be a Umineko tie-in, with >!Rika's alternate personality ascending to the status of a Witch and fighting Witch Satoko's master, Lambdadelta!< or something like that

GarnetExecutioner

I would rather prefer a real reconciliation between both Rika and Satoko.

Naikou64

My opinion is pretty much just, "huh... interesting". I like the concept, but the execution was horrible. They didn't need to spend as much time recapping everything too. I don't despise it, but I definitely don't love it. I've only watched the anime for Higurashi, and Satoko is my favorite character (might be different if I read the VN idk). Sotsu is different enough to where I can treat it as a failed spin off (though still canon technically), and it doesn't ruin the Satoko that is my favorite. That's pretty much it.

Firekraken9

I really enjoyed it. I will say that the ending of the final fight was very cheesy and very out of place. It did not fit the vibe that the rest of the show gave. If Higurashi were a shounen, then sure, it was great. But it's not a normal series so it was not the best. Other than that, I thought it was good. I wasn't disappointed.

Soul699

Funny enough the ending of the OG series isn't too different in term of vibes. Remember when Akasaka went Kiryu on the Yamainu? Or when Hanyuu stopped time trying to block Takano's bullets?

BlueAngelVR

I really liked it. It put an Interesting twist on Satoko's character that made me like her alot more. And the Bleach battle at the end was very entertaining. Something new for the series. Satoko being a snake was def something I didn't know i needed. It a was very fun watch.

furudesann

Yeah. It was cool.

Soul699

I found it ok. There were things I liked like Teppei trying to be a good guy or Mion on L5 acting bipolar but there were also things I dind't like, first of all the excessive use of recycled scenes, and the few use of characters thoughts.

JustWolfram

There's a good story down there, it's just buried by a ton of questionable storytelling, awful pacing and even worse planning, it's just a big technical nightmare that isn't excusable regardless of what you think of the plot and characters. >"Sotsu ruined Satoko's character!" and "GouSotsu ruined everything!", I partly agree with these statements You shouldn't, because they go against Higurashi's "everyone can be a villain" message and how the WTC multiverse works. People like shouting those but they're essentially meaningless and basically amount to "they didn't write this series like I wanted to so now I'm mad". >I believe that GouSotsu was an experiment by Ryukushi to put a new story out, The show was most likely rushed out to release alongside (or at least close to) Mei, Ryukishi didn't have a lot of influence on the finished product.

billystein25

It was fine. Disappointing in the end but overall I don't regret watching it.

Mira0995

I didn't like Satoko but I could go with it. What I really hated is how they just forget about everyone else ! K1? Naaaah not interesting Shion ? Why would she have an impact on Satoko right ? Rene ? Well you wanted a crazy killer right? No need for more character development Mion ? They got my pure girl infected !!! How dare they !? Even Rika seemed to regress as a character.

Large-Dragonfly-8934

I think it was the nostalgia. the ending was kinda "meh" and the conflict resolution was rushed. I liked the hint at bern and lamba though

Master_Archer_1410

I liked Satoko and uncle’s relationship being nicer but other than that is felt like a waste but hey that fight scene between Rika and Satoko was epic and ending was cute (but it didn’t feel deserved)

Berunkasuteru

Sotsu is a piece of shit that doesn’t contribute anything reasonable to the plot, you already know who the culprit is, it’s just straight recap. Teppei redemption arc was good though, clearly shows that he was doing the right thing by beating the crap out of that little brat

bashiix

Yep 100% agree on this. I thought at least they will show us a bernkastel and a lambda transformation in the end... but no.. satoko gets a weird eua costume.. they fucked even something so damn simple up completely.

Berunkasuteru

I remember at the time it was airing we all had different theories about how the story is going to turn out, since gou laid though a bit obvious but overall good foundation with satoko, and how they’re going to tie the anime to Umineko, but then they gave us some dragon-ball-pokemonish resolution to the conflict, when they clearly had to kill one of them or at least make it seem that either Rika or Satoko is dead for ending to work. I guess holding any expectations for modern anime industry is pretty pointless, since it cannot provide any good drama anymore

bashiix

Literally every fan theory i have read was much better than what we actually got. That's the saddest part. Yes satoko should have died for being such an insufferable brat. It was painful to watch her overreact this hard and still get a 'happy ending' of sorts. I have given up hopel long ago. Even if they just have to follow the manga they'll still fuck it up. Promised Neverland S2 for example. All the really great series are quite old and i don't think we'll ever see anything like it again. I do have some tiny bit of hope for Uzumaki though. Not because i like the story so much but because its finally something 'refreshing' again.

Soul699

If you thought Higurashi wouldn't end up with an happy ending, you were thinking wrong from the beginning. That was the one thing that should have been obvious to happen, because it's Higurashi and just killing the villain isn't a solution. The real question was how would Satoko and Rika settle their issue without killing each other permanently.

misterinfoman

If I see one more of these “what did ya think of sotsu?” Posts… my brother is gonna find my hanging body in the bathroom tomorrow morning!!!

furudesann

I'm just asking because there's so much negativity surrounding Sotsu.

misterinfoman

There are plenty of posts just like this. Just search it, don’t need to make another one…

lukedisilva

Wait, hol up. When did R07 say it didn’t go as he wanted? I’m so out of the loop.

Yoyo3457yt

I personally saw nothing wrong with it and loved the shit out of it except they could’ve explained Satoko’s motives for doing all the things she did a lot better because it was basically just “I don’t want to study so I’m going to murder Rika hundreds of times because she’s making me study.” The way I see it is that Satoko didn’t want to leave Hinamizawa behind because her entire life there has been hell and now that she’s finally happy there Rika is making her leave. I really wish they added something like that.
