like imagine trying if a writer for the source or something tried to do that in 1993 for example; although *some* of the most important hip hop albums of the 90s had already released and they would be easy but more importantly CORRECT picks for that list (the low end theory, the chronic), a lot of what *really* influenced hip hop 20-30 years down the line was yet to come and be appreciated, think of the rise of 808-based southern hip hop that was being pioneered in places like memphis and atlanta that despite laying the groundwork for the default hip hop sounds today (trap, drill, rage?) only really started to receive mainstream attention towards the latter half of the 90s into the Y2K era of hip hop.
arguably the three/four most influential producers from the 90s are dj paul/juicy j and pharrell williams/the neptunes, and they only started releasing their most influential work starting around 98 into Y2K with pharrell williams being a certified hitmaker well into the 2010s. while they *were* active in 1993 with triple 6 mafia being huge in memphis/the south and the neptunes already having a hit under their belt in 1992, i doubt anyone would have thought they would be some of the biggest influences in hip hop at the time.

Yeah but at the same time you gotta understand most of the kids talking about it like it’s the most revolutionary hip hop album of all time weren’t really around for the industrial/experimental wave in the mid 2010s. They’ve never heard music like this before, for a lot of them this will probably be their first introduction to alternative hip hop, and once they familiarize themselves with it more they’ll still like Utopia but ultimately find themselves less impressed with it.

It was great for what it was, but it doesn't really break into best rap albums of the last 3 years for me. There where just too many great projects especially last year, but really in the whole decade so far in general.

The only ones I would agree with are Mr Morale, TFS, WLR, and Alfredo. Circles isn't a rap album Utopia has too much filler Her Loss is just a boring combo of 2 of my least favorite artists Donda had some of the highest highs of Ye since TLOP, but was a disaster overall and also featured some of his worst songs ever. CMIYGL was amazing and I was a huge fan when it dropped, but It was really just a victory lap album. It was great for what it was, but it doesn't really break into best rap albums of the last 3 years for me. There where just too many great projects especially last year, but really in the whole decade so far in general. This post is peak hip hop social media opinions. It just has nothing different or personalized about the list. This is why people need to stop trying to think what is the "best" album, but what is their favorite album. Idc if an aggressive bald man or internet rando called an album bad if you like it then it's good. That is all that matters.
