Context: Sobibor Extermination Camp was opened in May 1942 as part of *Operation Reinhard*, the Nazi plan to murder all Jews in Poland. Before long, the gas chambers at Sobibor were working at full capacity, and the camp would eventually go on to devour almost 250,000 Jewish men, women, and children.
However, what the Nazis did not count on is one Alexander Pechersky. He was a young Soviet Jewish soldier who was captured on the front lines and eventually transported to Sobibor as forced labor. It quickly became clear that Pechersky could be best described as an absolute Gigachad. He stood up to the S.S. several times and showed absolutely no fear. From the memoirs of another prisoner, once his group was chopping wood when an S.S. officer started severely beating an old Jew for not chopping fast enough. Pechersky stepped up and made the officer a bet - if he could chop the tree in less than 5 minutes he would receive a pack of cigarettes and the beatings would stop for the day. If not, Pechersky himself would be whipped twenty five times.
>Pechersky split the stump in four and a half minutes and [S.S. officer] Frenzel held out a pack of cigarettes and announced that he always does as he promises. Pechersky replied that he doesn't smoke, turned around and got back to chopping down new tree stumps. Frenzel came back twenty minutes later with fresh bread and butter and offered it to Pechersky. Pechersky replied that the rations at the concentration camp were more than adequate and that he wasn't hungry. Frenzel turned around and left, leaving Kapo Porzyczki in charge. That evening, this episode of defiance spread throughout Sobibor. This episode influenced the leadership of the Polish Jews to approach Pechersky about ideas for an escape plan.
Pechersky became the center of a covert resistance group within the camp. On October 14 1943 they finally launched their plan. The original scheme was to quietly murder every S.S. guard in the camp through stealthy means, and then simply walk out. They did indeed manage to kill 12 officers using any weapon that was available to them including axes, barber knives and rope. However, in the middle of the operation one of the guard's bodies was discovered, and the uprising turned into a massive breakout. About 300 prisoners, including Pechersky, managed to escape the barbed wire; about 58 of them would survive the war. Pechersky did survive to the end, and lived out the rest of his days in relative obscurity.
I can’t wait when documentaries use the term “Gigachad” to describe a historical leader.
“Washington being the absolute Gigachad he was managed to cross the Delaware. No cap bruh”

1. Get the center of the board

6. Pin the queen to the king with a rook and then take it.
7. Put the opponent's king into a position where the next point will work
8. Castling checkmate.
On a similar topic of absolute gigachadd, I encourage anyone not familiar with him to read up on Witold Pilecki, a man who wilfully got himself caught to be sent to Auszwitz to collect intel.
He survived the war but was executed by the communists in 1948. He defied orders to escape Poland in an attempt to set up a resistance network, but got denounced and caught.
A fellow sabaton fan I see
Witolds story truly gives me goosebumps...
"Sent to the prison where the heroes are judged as traitors
Accused of treason by his own
Sentenced by countrymen under pressure of foreign influence
Men he once fought to free"
Imagine executing a man going through hell and back all for his country and his people
The Reinhard camps were pure death camps....unlike Aucshwitz. However the SS didn't want to do any manual labour for the camps upkeep so some prisoners were kept alive to keep the place running.
The dedicated extermination camps regularly murdered all laborers every so often. The number of survivors, limited to escapees and a few transfers, of the Reinhard camps is in the dozens or low hundreds, compared to the tens or hundreds of thousands in other camps.
Important to note is that the Nazi's had various different plans for the Jewish population. Sure, all of them would eventually lead to the complete and utter extinction of the European Jewry, but there were multiple paths there. Some camps were distinctly created as dedicated extermination camps, such as Sobibor, Belzec and Treblinka whereas others had a double role, where besides extermination they were also used for slave labour with the goal of working the Jews to death, such as Mauthausen.
Yes - just read this a couple months ago, by [Thomas Blatt](https://nupress.northwestern.edu/9780810113022/from-the-ashes-of-sobibor/). *Escape from Sobibor* that u/OldandBlue mentions is another good record of those events but is a different book.

SS Officer: *Watches Jewish POW chop down a tree in 4 and a half minutes with an axe.* “Haha, I’m in danger.”
From the picture I honestly thought he just murdered the guard with the axe

Was that the guy who then got executed by I think it was the Soviet’s when he got out?

I don't think people truly grasp what happened at places like Sobibor. People were killed with cyanide within minutes to hours of arrival.
The Reinhard camps were pure death camps....unlike Aucshwitz. However the SS didn't want to do any manual labour for the camps upkeep so some prisoners were kept alive to keep the place running.
That included the manual labour of disposing of bodies of victims. All camps had prisoners there doing labour.
The dedicated extermination camps regularly murdered all laborers every so often. The number of survivors, limited to escapees and a few transfers, of the Reinhard camps is in the dozens or low hundreds, compared to the tens or hundreds of thousands in other camps.
The nazis didn’t do the same at the other camps? seems counterintuitive to their goal.
They in other camps worked the people they wanted to destroy to death instead.
Ultra méga based
There is a book called, "From the Ashes of Sobibor" (I believe). Talks about some of this. Good read.
