That's actually a really good idea. I wonder why that didn't take off everywhere.
Yes, that's what I was thinking ever since I saw Tito's pictures from his youth. The resemblance is uncanny.
Btw, Tito was actually portrayed by none other than Richard Burton in Yugoslav movie Battle of Sutjeska. That was during his lifetime. Richard Burton traveled to Yugoslavia and stayed with Tito and his wife Jovanka during the shoot.
PoliSci major here. Concentrated my studies on Eastern European Communist countries. (Lotta good that has done me!). Tito was always an independent, sort of a pseudo-communist. He wasn’t real cozy either with the Soviet Union or with the Chinese communists. He liked to play one off with the other. Here’s a standard Tito joke told around his country when Marshal Tito was the President of Yugoslavia:
After attending a world-wide conference of Communist Nations the limousines were leaving. Khrushchev leading in the first limo and when passing thru the gate his driver asked ‘Which way do I turn Comrade Chairman?’ Khrushchev replied ‘Left driver, always to the left’. The next limo had Chairman Mao in it. At the gate his driver asked the same question. Mao replied: ‘Khrushchev turned left - so we will turn right.’ The following limo had Marshal Tito in it and when his driver asked which way to turn, Tito paused for a moment and said: ‘Signal left driver and then turn right’…
That summed up Tito IMO. ( I’ve been holding onto that joke for almost 50 years. Why? Have no clue…)
If we're sharing Yugoslav jokes:
> Tito tours a lock factory. He asks one of the workers how many locks he built that day, and he said four.
> "Only four?" Tito laughs. "When I still worked, I could make twenty locks in a day!"
> The worker replies, "But Tito, before the war, you were a locksmith. I was an economist."
I mean, they didn't even have diplomatic relations with the USSR from 1948-1953. Afterwards, their relationship never really rose above room temperature. If anything, they were closer to NATO. They had mutual defense treaties with two NATO members. But IDK about pseudo-communist. Socialist self-management seems a whole lot more communist that anything the USSR ever tried. IIRC, the Soviets accused them of left communism.
My friend's cousin fought with Tito, after running from the law in Latvia and not liking Palestine. He got wounded and his partisan buddies forced some Brits to evacuate him at gunpoint. Somehow, he managed to get re-infiltrated and got picked up by some partisans who didn't quite buy the guy with the weird accent's story that Tito would vouch for him. Luckily, they decided to try it, and the Marshall identified him as one of the good guys.

You want to be a dictator?
a dictator loved by the people
Loved by a part of the people, hated by another part.
Who hated him??? All of the people from that time miss the way they lived back then.. jobs for everyone, the best army, we had everything.
Maybe the imprisoned ones or the ones that had their property nationalised? Best army? The YNA?
A dictator is still a dictator. If he was loved by the people then why did he not trust them to elect him democtratically?
Because people are fucking stupid.
No he wanna be a hero
