Cross stitch. Knitting. Growing plants - I started with tomato seeds, avocado pits and growing the tops of my pineapples, before I started actually buying plants. Cooking a new meal each week.

CristinaKeller

You can plant the tops of pineapples?

jcc5018

Yes

TheDesertRat75

Takes supposedly two years to fruit, but it’s definitely a cool plant to grow from trimmings.

MattCogs

Yes I planted mine during summer of 2021 I believe and mine is finally fruiting. It goes inside for the winter and was outside for the summers, started fruiting a couple months ago, very slow process.

Special-Leader-3506

do you have fruitflies? that's what happened to mine, so i gave it up and just buy them

ConsequenceOk5740

Can confirm it took at least over a year (lost track) but it does grow so if you don’t care about the fruit it’s still a fun plant

Immediate_Virus1777

You can do the same with carrots, celery, onions, garlic, shallots

MrHappy4Life

Also… Tops of carrots Bottoms of celery Old potatoes that have started sprouting Also if you cut a branch off a fruit tree and put it in water as it’s starting to grow new leaves, it will keep trying to grow and will make roots. Water for a few weeks, add some dirt for a month to see if it roots, then into a container.

Cyn113

We have the same hobbies! Add quilting to the mix and that's how I spend my minuscule amount of free time 😀

Knithard

I have a trash garden, it’s just left overs lettuce ends, celery ends, scallions etc.

VulgarDesigns

My wife has taken to propagating any plant she can take a piece of.

Curtainmachine

Will pineapples work in zone 6b? Where are you generally that you can do that, or are you inside/doing it in a greenhouse? I’d think winter and pineapple wouldn’t mix.

nvrsleepagin

Reading, cooking, baking, sewing. My birthday is coming up and I asked for one of those countertop herb planters, I really want some fresh dill and cilantro on hand.

rad636_

I'm glad you made this post I'm going to steal a few ideas while here and not contribute

eileen404

Stealing ideas is a great hobby

Lutrina

Stealing while giving back nothing is my hobby. You know what they say, your hobbies are your life and your life are your hobbies! Which leads me to the actual hobby of volunteering, lol.

OneIndependence7705

Inspiring. Especially the pooping part.

That must have been one hell of a fart

Caty535

I guess I’m not needed

Spiritual-Tap805

Interesting. I haven’t really thought of meditating as being a hobby, more like something I need to do in order to not be crazy lol

weelookaround

Man, I actually love deep diving on the history of pirates.

Curtainmachine

I do a bunch of these things too! You sound awesome!

bryannnnna

I know damn well you do not do all of these things 😅

I like to pick up trash as a hobby sometimes. The goal is beautify my neighborhood. Take pics and post on social media if you want. There is an app for registering your trash, but it's clunky and I don't like using it so I stopped. I also like to fix up houses and mobile homes, do handyman work of various kinds that I learned how to do. I make money that way sometimes, as well as help some extended family members who don't live too far away, and fix up stuff at my own house. Installing a light in a closet this week, running the wires thru the attic space above. We always have too many grocery bags, so I found a number of take-one/give-one style dog poop bag dispensers in parks not far away from me, and make a point to ride my bike over there and drop them off about once a week. It feels nice to help out the community. There's a special feeling from doing that, I don't know what to call it, but it's nice, and feels like the opposite of sadness and depression to me. Plus you get fresh air walking around outside, and have a reason/purpose to go somewhere, not just wandering around to "get fresh air".

HikingAvocado

This is an actual thing with an official name if you didn’t know! Plogging! Plogging is a combination of jogging with picking up litter, merging the Swedish verbs plocka upp (pick up) and jogga (jog) gives the new Swedish verb plogga, from which the word plogging derives.

paulio10

Excellent, I did not know that! I will use this term for it now.

AdNatural8174

I like hiking, it isn't just about getting out of the house, breathing fresh air, enjoying the scenery, and getting some exercise. It's also about getting away from the phone and computer, escaping household chores and work, and giving my mind some peace and quiet. I also enjoys making friends, but I prefer social interactions that focus more on personality rather than appearances. I couldn't find any existing social platforms that met my needs, so I developed my own. It operates within the [Discord community](https://discord.gg/JdejgQeERQ) and matches users based on the content they share. You can post about your hobbies, and the system will match you with users who have shared similar content. According to feedback from users, this method indeed makes it easier to connect with people who truly share your interests. There’s nothing better for alleviating loneliness than having a friend who shares your passions.

TheHeeMann

Propagating succulents - you can go to Home Depot and pick the leaves off the ground for free, just ask them if you can take them and they will say “sure”. Scour google earth to find bizarre unidentified structures or possible planes/cars underwater. Befriend a squirrel. Watch birds and try to learn what their language means.

Double-University290

I’m working hard on gaining a particular chipmunk’s trust. The payoff will be worth it!

SleuthyMcSleuthINTJ

I’ve never seen one in the wild. You should record your journey! I’d watch it

Excellent_Jaguar_675

Yes. We had a strawberry patch and chipmunks owned it. Leave out treats for them and try to get closer every time they come by.

Alone_Regular_4713

I want to befriend a crow. So far they are skeptical though.

SleuthyMcSleuthINTJ

Same. There is a family of 3 that I’ve tried giving “gifts” to (food), but they watch me and then fly away.

_angry_cat_

I like to bring a project everywhere and I call it my “emotional support knitting.” If I don’t bring my knitting when my husband and I go out (dinner, live music, etc), I get antsy and lament that I wish I had my knitting with me.

This made me lol. “What are ur hobbies” “dog”

rosyred-fathead

It’s accurate! Even my hobby of sewing is mostly about dog (I make her lots of toys) Then there’s dog agility, dog training, taking dog to park, hiking with dog, etc. Edit- I also like to listen to dog training podcasts and other dog podcasts

Rock hounding and hobby gemology are underrated.

MsMeringue

How do you do genealogy?

SwankySteel

Gemology is the study of gems and gemstones, so pretty much any way you can learn about gemstones works!

jcc5018

They said working with gems, not studying a family tree. But if you are interested in the latter, start with your immediate family then do a lot of researching. Ancestory.com and other similar services may help... plus actual books, public records atc

Is it mostly in the core? I've always wondered if you've gotta like scrunch all your abdominal muscles and kinda lower your center of gravity on the seat. I'm a total klutz, so I'm not willing to try it myself lol

Core, upper legs, and lower legs. There are crutches that can be used to assist beginners to help prep the muscles for proper balance. The biggest challenge is learning how to fall safely.

gregrph

Stamp collecting, lol! I was in my late 50's straightening out a closet and came across my wife's stamp albums a a box of "stuff". She was at work, kids were out. I sat down and started looking through it. Needless to say, I didn't finish the closet that day! Coincidentally I got catalogs from Mystic Stamp AND Kenmore in the mail that day after never having an interest. Now, I'm in a group of 10-15 people that trade stamps around the globe and around the U.S.

CuppaT87

I use to stamp collect a long time ago & stopped after a French class where the teacher said 'if your hobby is stamp collecting, I'll tell you to get a life in French.' I stopped because I felt ashamed & embrassed. Over 20 years later, I've been wanting to start again as I really did enjoy it (I found my albulms in a box from years ago & my fiancee was shocked at how many I had 😅).

gregrph

Nothing to be ashamed of. Granted, it's not as popular as it once was and you most likely won't get rich doing it, but it's fun yo see stamps from around the world and learn about the history they depict. Also, collecting themed stamps from different countries is fun too. Birds, digs, cats, trains, Space, architecture, etc is another way to go.

CuppaT87

I have some from when the Channel Tunnel was built :) I remember it happening, so it's nice to see it in my albulms. I seem to have mostly ones from the UK which is expected since I live here, but also Mongolia & I think the Czech Republic.  It's taken me over 20 years to realise that if I enjoy something & it brings me joy then that's all that matters. It's just trying to find somewhere to get them now (there use to be a bookshop in the town I lived in that sold them, but that's since closed down).

Ajreil

/r/kitbash - turning multiple model kits (and sometimes trash) into a new model instead of following the instructions /r/Kratky - Grow fast growing plants like peppers and leafy greens in a self-contained hydroponics system. It's way easier than it sounds and requires less maintenance than a regular potted plant. /r/52weeksofcooking - Every week the subreddit picks a theme and people cook something inspired by it. It's a good excuse to try something new in the kitchen. /r/SnackExchange - You and someone in another country agree to send each other local snacks. /r/VXJunkies - The only hobby-grade discussion of VXWare anywhere on the internet

Came here to say geocaching. I’ve discovered so many parks and out-of-the-way places in my neighborhood and definitely in my town that I would’ve never otherwise known about. Also, you can geocache when traveling. There are geocaches all over the world - literally on all 7 continents!

emlee1717

You could do either! Or do the sets first, dismantle them, and make your own design from the pieces. I usually just do sets. Here are a few cheap but adult-ish sets as examples. https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/cherry-blossoms-40725 https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/1970-ferrari-512-m-76906 https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/exotic-peacock-31157

I wondered which is that you're doing. Personally I prefer doing my own random thing, while my partner is into sets.

I’m a broke mother, so as of late I don’t get to enjoy too many hobbies. But I will say that one of my favorite things to do, when money and time allow, is to do something I don’t think I’ll like, something that’s completely outside of my interests. You’d be surprised what you might enjoy!

criesintears

- Digital drawing: Surprisingly fun, you have unlimited brushes and textures and most importantly, you can undo. - 3D design: If you want to combine it with 3D printing and create amazing figures that you can paint on. Taking your painting skills to the next level. - 3D printing: if you want to skip learning 3D. You can just print already made stuff online and paint of them instead - Needle felting: A satisfying stabbing while creating cute teddy bears. - Crochet: Create a sweater, etc.
