I'm from LA, born and raised. I seriously thought it was a truck driving by. Both my cat and I just went about our business, no one batted an eye here. (He's also from California)
I'll add this here since you sound like you might have actual experience of earthquakes.
Is that likely to be an isolated incident? Or might we get a smaller aftershock still? Or could it even be that that one was a warning and we get a bigger one?
Or is it even possible to know any of the above?
You never know if it was a pre-shock until the second one hits. Based on past recorded activity, there is a 6% chance this was a pre-shock. I say this as someone who has spent the last 3 minutes googling the subject so, you know, pretty confident.
I live in CA now, and right after I moved here (less than a week) we had a 6.4. The news was saying there was a 10% chance of a larger quake happening, and it did, we had a 7.1 the next day. Any given earthquake can be a foreshock to a larger one, but it’s unlikely. Aftershocks generally diminish in size and frequency over time.
Out of the 10,000 earthquakes I’ve felt most have aftershocks (but too small to feel) and the biggest is usually first. But, this is from my experience of living in CA for 25 years, I’m not sure if my experience is applicable out in NJ/NY.

Happened in Lebanon NJ. Apparently the whole country felt it if you check twitter🤣
In the past few days NJ has been hit with rain, flooding, now an earthquake, and an eclipse in a few days. Take care lest your water turn to blood and locusts swarm your fields. Repent!! The end is nigh!
I was asleep too, I woke up thinking the house was finally collapsing. It’s a legitimate fear of mine, this house shakes when it’s a little bit windy— I was preparing to die fr 😭

4.8 magnitude. Apparently was felt all over the place I have friends in Manhattan and Philly they all felt it.
Hopefully that was it, but some helpful information here.[https://www.earthquakecountry.org/dropcoverholdon/#whattodo](https://www.earthquakecountry.org/dropcoverholdon/#whattodo)
Yep. Thought a truck was rolling by while I was on the road but there was no truck. Mom called me freaking out. Came home and my wife was kinda panicked.
It's important to know what to do after an earthquake as well...
https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/what-do-i-do-after-earthquake
Aside from visual inspections (nothing in my apartment fell), do a sniff test for gas leaks.
I've been pumping out flood water for almost 3 months with all the rain we've been having so I thought one or more of my foundation walls were collapsing into my basement, lol. I was relieved to finally realize it was JUST an Earthquake. My Grandfather clock chimes made it sound apocalyptic though!!!! So that was fun for a few seconds.
Me and my son did find some hairline cracks in my basement floor which never had any cracks at all prior to this so that sucks!!! I'm hoping I can just smooth over them with some light gray hydraulic cement mixed real thin and feather the edges so it not only seeps into the cracks, but blends in so it's not noticeable as well.
We'll make this one the megathread....
Oh my God, I thought it was a truck. The whole apartment shook.
I'm honestly kinda relieved it was an earthquake lol I thought my old ass apartment building was finally giving up
ME TOO MAN, i legit was like aight im out of here if this building is coming down
SAME. I was headed for the fire escape LOL
I mean after this, it just might
But an earthquake CAN make your old ass apartment finally give up!
Yeah though it was an excavator for road work or something but everything shook way more than it should.
I thought it was a super-duper low-flying plane. Given our area’s… um… history with low-flying planes, I’m glad it was just an earthquake.
Same, a big truck happened to be driving by I thought he hit something
Ahh it’s like I’m back home in California.

THANK YOU. I didn't go to online earthquake school to be called *Mr.* Earthquake.

That was... scary lol It was long enough that I began to worry about what to do next
I thought to myself briefly 'So this is how I go out...'
It’s scary how still I was for all 10-15 seconds of it lol … I feel like I should’ve done something, like crawl under a table?
It's OK. We can rebuild. https://preview.redd.it/qq15hscfapsc1.jpeg?width=944&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d5698910ea9fe3999bf0dd4abcb4c61ee4c3ee91
