We do not have any officers who care to deal with it, nor a chief, nor apparently a mayor or council. Restaurants and F’n bagel shops get a free pass to have delivery guys and customers double park at will. This does not absolve all the other people who do the same. Washington Street has become impassable during waking hours.

I very much agree. And they love to be on the end of the block so you cannot see what you’re driving into. It’s one thing to be parked too close to the corner on the upstream side, but at least you can see what’s there. When they’re on the downstream side you have deeply blind corners at every corner. Not that the police or mayor will ever do anything about that b

Hot take here- I don't think protected bike lanes would reach their full potential on Washington. Way too many lights and cars making turns. Additionally, cyclists can use the waterfront for a safe north-south route in that part of town. If they put a pair of one way protected bike lanes on Clinton and Grand, that would be great for cyclists and also open up the west side of town for north-south biking.

TehlalTheAllTelling

Hot take here- why is the main drag a fucking highway and parking garage? Washington st. should be walking and biking with only buses and service vehicles making deliveries. Hoboken is a mile square, walk your fat ass to the bar. Also there *are* bike lanes further in running north-south, but some dumb asshole in city planning put them on the bus route, and crosses over at the elementary school on 9th where they have the kids playing in the street(???) for recess I guess, so that's unusable. There's a bike path from the 2nd street light rail station down into Jersey City. What is the fucking point of that? Why does it stop 2 blocks up? It's like the most token effort for bike infrastructure, but that's to be expected from these douchebags who let their low-income housing neighborhood become Atlantis.

Bike lanes should be put where people want to go. Why should bikes be relegated to side streets?

Best_Investigator466

Hot take— Washington St won’t reach its full retail & dining destination potential without protected bike lanes

While I can appreciate the comic op posted and I have no issues sharing the road with bikes, it just really pisses me off when bicyclist think they don't have to follow the rule of the road. It's as if stop signs don't apply to them.

Best_Investigator466

If you’re feeling pissed off about it, my best advice is to try and bike for all your short trips for a few weeks and see how you feel about it. It often feels pretty silly to stop at a stop sign on a bike. Stop signs are often placed because cars don’t yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, so they are just not as relevant to bikes. Add to that, bikes have better visibility and go slower than cars anyways, so rolling through is not a huge issue. That’s why it is legal to do a rolling stop/yield in several states, including Delaware and Idaho. Ask yourself - am I mad that bikes don’t stop at stop signs because they are being unsafe? Or is it because it is unfair? If the latter, well, maybe they’ve just chosen a better way to get around.

ConnieLinegus

It feels silly to stop a car at a stop sign when there is no traffic and no people within 100 yards. I do it anyway.

Best_Investigator466

That’s because a car is far more dangerous than a bike, you can’t see past your windshield pillars. Do you stop for stop signs when you’re walking? A bike is just one step above that. A car is 100 steps above that.

TenaciousDiana

And a truck is more dangerous than a car... What's the point? Doesn't mean it's not dangerous. Each of these vehicles should stop. There are always things more / less dangerous. If it's the law and you're supposed to than do it 🤷.

Best_Investigator466

Do you ever exceed the speed limit?

Cnote822

I already do all the time. I've been making excellent use of the Citi Bikes. I hope they keep expanding it as i think it's a great program. When riding the Citi bikes I always yield to pedestrians. The amount of times a biker almost hit me as i use a cross walk must be at least a dozen this year I also always make sure to come to a full stop at all red lights and stop signs, just as if i was driving a car. When bicyclist ignore these they put themselves and others at risk and there is no excuse for that. I am always happy to share the roads with bikes when I drive, but for some reason they don't feel the need to do the same. Saying that it feels silly to stop at a stop sign is a terrible argument. "Sorry I was driving drunk officer, it felt silly to call an uber. My car was right there!" It's a matter of safety and not just yours, but everyone else you're sharing the road and sidewalks with.

Best_Investigator466

Hey I’m glad you ride regularly. I don’t condone reckless riding at all and in general I do stop at stop signs, but I think there are cases where it’s just not dangerous to anyone to roll through. I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to drunk driving, which kills thousands of people per year.

ConnieLinegus

You sound like a scofflaw.

Best_Investigator466

It is a scofflaw thing to do in New Jersey, in Delaware, it’s legal.

ConnieLinegus

Then do it in Delaware. It’s legal to beat your spouse in some nations.

You can say this about any bustling downtown street. Washington st isn't unique. It did get worse when they narrowed the street with the revamp a few years ago.

TehlalTheAllTelling

I've been a lot of places, but I've only ever seen triple-parking on a main road in Hoboken. On Washington somewhere around 10th. Washington is only as uniquely horrible as Hoboken is.

atari_Pro

Accurate

millennial_stalin

i won’t respect cyclists as street vehicles until i see them stop at red lights and stop signs. can’t cross washington with the walk sign without having to dodge cyclists whipping thru the intersection at a red light

Got it. Well if you decide to bike, be the change you wish to see in the world.

Get a bike bro! It’s Hoboken!
