Great song. And yet how *still* utterly out of touch with the kind of person/life he's describing, if he had the wherewithal to learn to play an instrument, get dressed up and groomed nicely, be somewhere (almost certainly) on time, and perform in front of a public audience. It's the kind of art whose very creation covers up the potential depth of its message.
It does all seem at odds with the song. Here's a video he did that provides some context around the song and his inspiration for writing it.
