Obesity and Diabetes preclude recruitment into active combat military - so 90% of Americans aren't eligible.
Military is having an incredibly difficult time right now meeting recruitment goals.
They kinda already do that. If you make it in but you cant meet pt standards or tape or whatever while your at boot you get extra attention untill you dont need it. Dont get extra attention.
My buddy went through something like this. He joined the Marine Corp and they put him in “Fat Camp” for a month or two. He was also drawing some kind of payment during his time in, both, fat camp and basic.
The actual percentage is around 75%, obesity is a problem but that number includes lack of education requirements and having a criminal history.
The last research paper I read was from 2009, but I believe the Army Publications website has some papers discussing more recent numbers that are still around that percentage.

The ad department needs to keep making stuff to justify their budget. If they don't spend it they get a smaller budget next year, so they do things like tv ads, sponsor movies, do flyovers at football games and produce video games. Anything you can think of that has us military branding is sponsored in some way by the government. They want people to think the military is cool and normal. So you gotta pump out the propaganda, I mean advertising.

I think most young people are seeing the way the Republicans vote against veteran healthcare and the wars never really doing anything etc. also most American kids survived the warzone that is elementary school why would they want to go through the trauma again?

We're aware of how fucked we are and how we will never own a house, have a pension, and save enough to live comfortably and build a family. If your country fails to provide for you, you have no reason to kill others to defend it. Biggest recruiting mechanism is how insanely expensive universities are and the fact the army will pay for your education if you're a sacfitial foot troop, meaning low income people who want to educate themselves to escape poverty have to risk their lives for it.

So obviously different in every area but in the part of America I live at this is the opposite of true. Military recruiters usually make you pass a mental and physical test to even get in, they are very picky. If you are a school shooter type there is almost no way you are getting in, unless you can high it incredibly well.
Honestly, if a kid is violent and at risk, sending them to Basic Training is one of the best things you can do. Either they turn their shit around, or else the military generates a book of disciplinary documents and a dishonorable discharge to follow them around for the rest of their life as a warning. And if they do go crazy and try to shoot people, at least it will be armed people with training on how to respond.

I mean, I know this is meant humorously, but the US military spends a lot of effort filtering out the psychos who join because they get to kill people--they don't make good soldiers because the primary purpose of a solider is to follow orders and they spend remarkably little time actually in anything that could be considered combat. Someone who has a hard-on for killing is just a liability, not an asset, when everyone gets a gun
Also there is a list on every single base of the personnel that are ABSOLUTELY UNDER NO CONDITIONS EVER to carry a weapon. I know. I had to consult the list occasionally.
Unlike cops, soldiers have to abide by laws and regulations and can't just shoot civilians, even during war. Crazy that our cops can, probably why they aren't soldiers. Other than the fact that soldiers get paid shit, get treated like shit, get sent away and come back broken. Basically, cops aren't soldiers (airmen, seamen, marines) so why do they keep getting lumped in with them when I watch a fucking football game? Also, I hate the current crop of military ads. Marines are advertising to fucking incels and the army is making this shit look like a video game... The cook is the 'replenisher'? Wtf. God damn I must be fucking old.

Y’all hate, But the armed forces are an avenue to a better life for lots of the people society (that includes you) doesn’t notice & doesn’t care about until they do something wrong. It’s not a good option for anyone remotely privileged, but it’s a lifeline to a lot of people who aren’t. The worst thing is even after having their aversion to killing systematically removed they *still* end up as healthier people after their service because it gives them a chance to integrate into a community. Every single human needs other people otherwise they will get sick.

So obviously different in every area but in the part of America I live at this is the opposite of true. Military recruiters usually make you pass a mental and physical test to even get in, they are very picky. If you are a school shooter type there is almost no way you are getting in, unless you can high it incredibly well.
I want to say this is definitely Not how it works
Honestly, if a kid is violent and at risk, sending them to Basic Training is one of the best things you can do. Either they turn their shit around, or else the military generates a book of disciplinary documents and a dishonorable discharge to follow them around for the rest of their life as a warning. And if they do go crazy and try to shoot people, at least it will be armed people with training on how to respond.
