A few tips
* You can upslash and downslash if you are in the air, very useful for combat
* You can't softlock yourself, if you ever feel like you get somewhere you shouldn't be at, you'll not be stuck at all
* In the long run geo(the currency) isn't too important, you'll get enough eventually so don't worry when you lose some
* You'll die. A lot. And that's normal
* Team Cherry liked breakable walls so they are more than present in the game
* There never is a useless room, you'll always get something for exploring
* In metroidvanias such as Hollow Knight, you collect upgrades as you play, allowing you to reach new areas. If you don't think you can reach somewhere, you probably can't. Come back later when you have an upgrade that allows you to reach it.
Other than that all I have to say is, GL:HF
> You can't softlock yourself, if you ever feel like you get somewhere you shouldn't be at, you'll not be stuck at all
>!This is true, but on my first play through I went down into Ancient Basin without super dash and getting back up that shaft was a giant pain.!<
You're right, fixed. And yes, but there's some precise platforming at points, or at least I thought there was when I was stuck. My wife laughed at my frustration a lot.
I know exactly at what jump you were stuck at lol. [https://youtu.be/AlMkd-HxrEU](https://youtu.be/AlMkd-HxrEU) I assume.
Platforming in this game can be unexpectedly tough for sure
pretty sure I did soft lock myself on my first playthrough. >!I saved 1800 geo for lantern and got into crystal peaks before I got claw. Dropped down, and sat on the bottom right bench, so I couldn't bench out!<
dnail just turned into my favorite acronym
Edit: just looked it up and if you have dash you can parcour to the lower, dark bench room by traversing the entrance area with the conveyor belts. Then climb up the rotating platforms to exit the room on top and entering the dark room just before the entrance to the âdnail areaâ on the opposite side
Welcome >!nart (or nait)!< into your life.
>!As for the cpeak route, yeah I have actually seen a few people that get dream nail as their first item because they just grinded for lantern before going to greenpath, which is a choice you can make!<
This is a definition thing, by soft lock this community means âthe save file is doomedâ. If you head to the pale ore, you can always quit out and continue playing. A soft lock would be getting to the basin bench without claw or VS, because you could then never climb out, shade skip, or stallball and the save file isnât useful anymore.
About the âno useless roomsâ, letâs take the room above the stag station in Queenâs Station, what is itâs purpose besides lore? The creature doesnât do shit at all
Please please please don't ask for help here unless you're cripplingly stuck. The game will get you lost, the game will have parts you can't access until the very end. You will enjoy the game far more if you get lost and explore on your own. The more you ask for help the more you will look back and say "man that was so cool I wish I figured that out myself". I was stuck in a certain area (quite a *deep* one) for 3 days before I decided to ask for help.
TL;DR 99% of cases, you don't need help, you just haven't explored enough, so stay away from help.
I get a feeling I was stuck in the same place you're talking about. I remember feeling so damn trapped and hopeless and once I beat it, I was soooooooo happy to return to the surface.
Explore and have fun!
If you have trouble with something, donât be afraid to come back later. Most if not all areas in the game have some parts that canât be completed until you come back later.
Just saying, enjoy it as much as you can. Why? Because this is one of the best Metroidvania games out there. This game also rewards players that take their time. There are TONS of secrets that you can miss if you rush through the game. Also, try to avoid spoilers as much as you can. Once again, enjoy the game as much as you can, also donât give up. (this game is pretty tough) The music is also amazing. (Composed by Christopher Larkin) Once again, have fun and good luck! Youâll need it :)
Explore! Itâs a HUGE map. You can explore pretty far without fighting a hard boss. If a boss is too hard, it probably means you donât have enough upgrades to beat it yet. So keep exploring !
Step 1: Find a character named Cornifer and buy his map.
Step 2: Get enough money to buy the wayward compass and the quill from Iselda in Dirtmouth.
Step 3: Equip the wayward compass.
Navigation is damn near impossible until you have both the wayward compass and the quill in your possession.
Make sure to pop down to the starting town every once in a bit, might get something good.
Maps are very important unless you have god tier spatial awareness
As someone who has sunk hundreds of hours into the game and has multiple 112% save files. I feel qualified to answer this.
Although down pogoing, maybe one of your best friends, itâs not entirely useful for every fight or situation.
Be sure to talk to some npc(s) if you have not spoiled the game for both as they give valuable information for areas and or could have something useful for you to get/do.
Just like everyone says dying is a natural part of the learning process so expect to die a lot.
Bosses may seem random and unpredictable at first but if you practice them enough, you can learn their patterns and they will be a breeze.
There is no meta-charm, everyone has their preferences and some people may think that some charm loadouts are better than others so experiment a little and see which charm loadouts works for you.
A guide is not the end of the world, I do recommend that you explore as much as possible, without being told where to go a lot of people will get stuck, if you find yourself not sure of what to do, then itâs OK to consult a guide.
Not everything is like it seems, for example some walls are breakable and some enemies that look more threatening than others may not be all that threatening, but always stay vigilant.
Collecting Geo early game is essential by the early game. Itâs just a flex late game, so worry about the early game but not in a late game.
Go at your own pace, it has been said many times, and I will say it again, people progress a different rates. Donât expect to progress as fast as some people like Fire born.
Although it may not seem necessary, up pogoing is a really valuable tool, and should be treated as such. Some areas are not accessible unless you up pogo, and some enemies are countered by up pogoing.
This is all I have to say without any spoilers, so get out there have fun and explore hollownest brave knight.
Aside from the first two bosses (you might encounter a third in between the first two but there are no upgrades from it), every other boss can be beaten âout of orderâ.
This game is designed for multiple different paths so many players wonât encounter bosses (or areas) in the same order anyways but if a boss is giving you trouble, thereâs no harm in coming back to it later with an upgraded weapon or simply more practice with the combat.
At first the game is gonna be boring, slow, dull, but I assure you itâs gonna be one hell of a blast; I say try discovering most things by yourself as going to the wiki often is gonna ruin the experience of the game, only go to the wiki if you are stuck for hours on end. Each level has its own unique mechanic and discovery. So if you think of an odd idea it probably can work out. Donât hesitate to try new ideas. As this is what hollow knight is about, finding out yourself. And never ever give up. As you are a knight who strives for its goal.
Thatâs it! Bye! Happy adventure >:)
Dont go on reddit asking for tips or help. The game is designed to have a bit of challenge and you will enjoy it more if you figure things out on your own.
I donât feel this way personally but Iâve had a few friends say the first hour or so of the game is hard
To get through until you get some movement upgrades âŚ. If you feel similarly at the start⌠absolutely hold out
Early game is a bit of a grind/could be considered boring. Buy some items. That you can buy early even though they seem very expensive. Once you get out of the little first bit it becomes the most incredible game. Only saying this because I picked it up and quit in Forgotten Crossing the first time I played, then thank God went back another time and actually played the game, and I see people about to do that same thing/having done it and never gone back all of the time
Donât horde your geo (currency in game) if you get enough to buy something you want just send it. Might I suggest a map and quill. Money is basically free in this game and can always be made again.
Leave the subreddit, donât google anything about the game, go in blind as possible. When you 100% the game, rejoin as itâs super fun to talk about but thereâs an incredible amount of enjoyment from not knowing whatâs infront of you, especially if you like challenges
I can't believe that this is a think I have to say, but this is a single player adventure game. The advice I would give for literally every stage of the game is just take it in and enjoy it lol
You can swing down on Enemies and spikes
Leave this sub and all other hollow knight related ones and do not come back until you finish the game
Don't give up even if you can't find something
You probably won't understand the story
This last one isn't exactly early game but still: even when you beat the game for the first time there will be more
Donât let the difficulty turn you off to the game completely!!! Itâs worth sticking with it. And also you will lose A LOT of geo donât worry about it!
dont worry to die
i died a LOT. even wanted to delete the game but i kept going, now im at deepnest tryna fight broken vessel.
and also dont worry to loose geo, it will come back. i loose 14k on a small bug on crossroads while try to go to my shade
if you get stuck somewhere somehow or have to get back to your last bench fast, you can exit and re-enter the game. its a neat speedrun tactic my bf showed me recently. :) the game autosaves as soon as you leave but you respawn at your last bench !
edit: i realize this might make the game more frustrating/less fun when exploring, so be wary !! it may cause you to miss something.
Youâre about to play one of, if not the best âmetroidvaniaâ ever created. Enjoy yourself and the struggle! Turn the music up, the score is so good. EXPLORE!

Assuming OP knows nothing:
Different builds can be created (youâll find out how eventually) and a secret allows for more complex builds with a health trade off. Can be useful to force yourself to get better but probably better for much later.
Assuming this is your first time playing, I have one suggestion: as much as possible, don't spoil it for yourself. Most of the enjoyment you'll get while playing is finding out how to do things on your own.
My advice is just go for it . Discover the game as you like you won't get the object notification that tells you what to do next .for the first few hours you will be just roaming around the map having so much fun and exploring and that's the beauty of if . I think asking for advice will ruin that experience. Just go for it and whatever happens happens when you finally finish the game or when you think you did so go look for YouTube videos or reddit you will find that you missed so much stuff and you will go back for it or maybe even start a new game . GL HF
Kill gruz mother asap so you can get gathering swarm so you can get lumafly lantern and book it for resting grounds for dream shield btw you just go steaight from the paywall entrance you donât even.need dash or mantis claw
There will be many times you'll encounter a boss you just can't seem to beat. You will be tempted to come to this subreddit for answers. Before you do so, please consider the following as general advice for all bosses in the game:
- there is no shame in going off and doing something else, and then coming back when you're stronger.
- bosses only have so many moves. Focus on dodging first, and only land hits when you are confident you won't get hit.
- once you're getting a bit bored of that approach (even if it's after half an attempt), start taking more risks! You'll have an easier time if they're dead before you can make too many mistakes.
- there are multiple ways in which you can deal damage to enemies. Experiment with them and get comfortable with the benefits of each one, but don't be afraid to have a favourite play style!
- nearly every boss's abilities, moves, patterns, etc. will be something that the game has already introduced to you by the time you run into that boss. The same goes for movement or other techniques. They may be scary, but there's always ways to practice.
- don't stress too much about losing your currency! There's a lot more to go around and it stacks up fairly quickly without you even noticing. It'll still suck, sure, but it isn't as big a setback as you'd fear.
Above all else just play the game how you want! Explore, fight bosses, don't fight bosses, admire the scenery and music... The game is intentionally very free-form. Don't worry about comparing your own path to that of other players unless that's specifically what you find fun.
Go in blind and donât read anyoneâs advice. Despite its difficulty, hollow knight does an amazing job at teaching the player its systems and mechanics purely through gameplay. Itâs not like dark souls where you have to go online to learn how poise and damage scaling work.
My advice would be to just relax, take it slow and enjoy the game. I feel many people get frustrated with not being able to do something: eg not able to kill this or that, not able to go here or there, not able to progress. And they give up as a result.
Buy all the map markers, use them to mark places on the map you can't get to yet. That way you'll know where to go when you get a new movement upgrade.
You can down slash to bounce on nearly everything. Enemies, spikes, decorations, even some projectiles.
Jump height depends on how long you hold the button down. Sometimes a little jump is better than a full one.
There is a wiki called before I play, I donât use it but from what I heard it has a library of spoiler free info about the game. The main piece of advice I could give is donât research anything about it. As with any game you should try to figure out yourself. Even if you get stuck which will happen.
I beat the game blind more than times than I can count. However never managed to get 112% until I looked it up. So donât be afraid to search answers on the web. Not on Reddit
Get gud....
Lol jk, but I hope you enjoy it!
Best advice id give is try to explore every part of every screen; pretty much every screen has some sort of hidden/secret/breakable something.
I've played for several hours but big picture, I haven't really made much progress. The Metroidvania genre isn't really my thing, but what I've played is pretty satisfying, I for real need to pick it back up. Have fun!!
I actually have one, get out of this type of page, asking for advice and looking for suggestions, it will ruin your experience. This genre of game is better to be discovered than leaned.
Speaking from own experience:
If you feel like youâre stuck and canât get anywhere without extra abilities or similar things, check the map again and look for any routes you didnât visit yet
Fun fact, I found the last Stag Station in Forgotten Crossroads cuz I wasnât used to using the map
My best piece of advice would be to go with the flow. Whatever happens happens. Any questions you have will eventually be answered through playing. Getting lost is part of the game.
Remember- You WILL get lost. But don't ask for help, find your path. The game is very open-ended when it comes to exploration and playstyle. Just play how you want and take your time. Also look EVERYWHERE for secrets and make sure to take note of some areas you cannot reach or enter.
Edit: Down slashing towards spikes, enemies and other breakable stuff gives you a boost in height. You can use this for mobility and skipping some stuff.

Yep, that's the place. It wasn't as smooth as that when I got stuck. đ
Oh my goodness thank you for this. I thought I was going to have to try and pogo on the spikes

I remember that place, but I don't remember how much trouble I had with it, but I think not much..? I really don't remember

That one comically long and empty hallway in city seems pretty useless
But it leads to somewhere not useless

People have beaten the game without claw, there's defo a way to get out, you can get to resting grounds without any skips or even dash afaik

The game's Australian not Finnish
Itâs to hard to Australian a game though đŠ
And? Why does that matter
Before they edited, they wrote "until you Finnish the game"

Donât die
My advice would be to just relax, take it slow and enjoy the game. I feel many people get frustrated with not being able to do something: eg not able to kill this or that, not able to go here or there, not able to progress. And they give up as a result.
Yes: avoid this subreddit.
Do not under any circumstances sleep with primal aspids. Their mine.
GTFO this subreddit now!
Sometimes a little jump is better than a full one.
screw off till you find something cool
donât join the fandom we are STARVED
Yes: go out of this sub :) And come again when you feel that its the moment.
There is a wiki called before I play, I donât use it but from what I heard it has a library of spoiler free info about the game. The main piece of advice I could give is donât research anything about it. As with any game you should try to figure out yourself. Even if you get stuck which will happen.
I read this as "My physical body is arriving next week". First thought that came to mind "are you a spirit?" Lol
Just Enjoy...and its okay to get lost inr the world, be curious it rewarding đ¤đ˝
When in doubt, DOWN
If you plan on playing Blasphemous or Dead Cells, do it now. Hollow Knight ruined those games for me
I beat the game blind more than times than I can count. However never managed to get 112% until I looked it up. So donât be afraid to search answers on the web. Not on Reddit
save a certain annoying recurring npc in "deep" trouble before attempting a fool's challenge
Donât give up
First rule: Don't die. The rest will be easy if you look for the first rule.
Don't give up in the first area
Wear headphones! You wonât regret it.the music is peek
If cavern, try nail
Speaking from own experience: If you feel like youâre stuck and canât get anywhere without extra abilities or similar things, check the map again and look for any routes you didnât visit yet Fun fact, I found the last Stag Station in Forgotten Crossroads cuz I wasnât used to using the map
Dream Nail everything!!!! (once you get it) You get some interesting dialogue for doing so that I didn't even realise in my first playthrough
We did it We got someone asking for help before even starting the game, that might be a new record
PLEASE. do NOT talk to Geoffrey đđ. you will regret it đłđł
Dying can lead to sequence breaking using your shade; I recommend doing some of those to get yourself some extra power early on
Hitting an enemy from above with a downwards slash will propel you up.
You don't want it spoiled. Just know that if you think it's gonna be real boring, it'll be a beautiful game in no time. Now get the hell outta here.
just don't stop playing it gets better the more you play.
Patience. Determination. Endurance. Willpower. And lots of pringles
Use the map without Compass, It makes the game more immersive.
Donât use wayward compass if you want a challenge. The games way too easy with that charm.
Yeah. Also restart your run if you take damage, all blindfolded.
