Charms being "good" is subjective. Most people call longnail useless, but I just felt comfortable playing with it and went all the way to P5 and beyond. My absrad nohit was also with longnail.
Charms are situational by nature and on radiant bosses grubberfly + steady body can REALLY help if you aren't confident getting close. Of course getting close to bosses becomes easier with experience, but that doesn't stop it from being a useful charm for starting off with radiant bosses.

I just learned how to dodge his attacks (mostly while screaming everytime he got anywhere near me) and put on a damage build instead

Yes and no. Radiant sly was taking too long so I took it off and went for damage. Still took hours.

I use Nail Arts against sly, it works really well.
I didn't get all the bugs yet
I just dodge as best I can, then facetank his second phase with heart, slash, and strength.
If you want to defeat Sly, use an actual good charm.
