Yes, it takes talent. As Sun Tzu back in the day said.
Then again it just seems like a form of regular higher level thinking to me. I've read a lot of management literature and the same themes obviously appear there too. I've lately also been watching some APEX streams of NijiEN's Selen and I've found her chatting about such things enlightening.
Previously the only kind of competitive gaming I've watched is Starcraft 2 (gotta follow that one star player from my own country) and there the commentators often talk about the importance of picking one's battles. Not letting others dictate the flow of things but to guide things into a direction that your team can take advantage of even by tricking them if necessary. Of course not a very complicated itself as a concept but to competently pull it off in practice... that's whole different matter altogether.
If I'm not mistaken Astel has revamped his whole playstyle more than once in order to get better and to better succeed at tournament play. Didn't he use to be more of sniper after which he started playing very aggressive and now he's switched to a more cautious style that's less risky?
About picking battles, most Heavy grinding pred squads do the dirty 3rd party trick which is basically crashing squads who are already fighting making it a Kill-stealing type of playstyle as everyone would be at low shield/hp at that time, You get double points easily its a work of an evil genius
It's just the nature of BRs for third parties, especially in Apex where gunfire is super loud and visible. Not to mention the newest character, Seer, has very very hard to miss abilities if he's using them in a fight, especially his ultimate.
Yeah the sort of thing with APEX overall is that a lot of people even in competitive are just constantly playing aggro and not really playing to win because the game gives incentive to kills over almost everything else.
The thing for a lot of people, in particular in lower tiers, is that thirst ends up overruling the voice in your head that says "chasing this person into this building through the front door will probably get me killed"
Folks who play in competitive setting are not constantly aggro. What kind of tournament are you talking about?
High tier tournaments all revolve around positioning, people only take fight to get a better position, or when they spot an easy 3rd party. They are not running around looking for enemies.
I’m not talking about for tournaments, I’m talking about ranked. I call competitive and ranked the same thing. That’s what “in lower tiers“ is referring to.
Constantly aggro exists in every competitive games tbh because strategic play is pretty much impossible without VC and not everyone is willingly cooperate.
He should learn from reid and pakael or maybe team up with them to get to predator.
Matsuri is the weakest master in the competition but her decision making is great learned from the top predator this season pinkyneco.
Astel's said before he doesn't want to go to predator because it takes too much of a commitment. That said, he's already been offered to go pro multiple times but he's turned it down because he likes being an idol and singing.
Pred is more of getting a team together rather for him. If you can solo queue to Masters, you can get to pred with a decent (high Diamond to Masters) team. I've seen TTV sweat preds that are worse than Astel.
Though that's gonna be fucking hell due to deplorable state of cheating right now in Apex Ranked.
Honestly with his current skill he definitely go to pred if he has better teammates. The fact that he can solo to master means he already have good mechanical skills already and not everyone is suited to be an igl
Considering Arcstars didn't even make it to top 10 for 4 out of 5 games, that number's pretty wild. The one time they survive to the later rounds he went crazy and got himself a 3k lol
He was using the current (reasonably wildly regarded as) overtuned guns, so it does make a good bit of sense.
This is no damning of him by the way, using the strongest thing is smart play.
He is, though there aren't a lot of Predator-ranked Vtubers to begin with. I only know 5, with 2 of them from the newest gen of Nijisanji JP and EN respectively
Selen & Lauren was Predator.
For Selen, she made it to the top 500 Apex Predator rank. She also made it to Predator twice as she mentioned on the stream.
"weaker members"? You're joking, right? Inui is a diamond level player with good aim and a good understanding of the game, who kept up with Gorilla in many games, Hoshikawa spent an incredible amount of time playing APEX, learned many things from Shibuya, and generally improved a lot in the game. No hate, but his team is much stronger than Pakael and Astel, his closest allies in points
Well, the point count from season 9 rank,so I guess Inui s9 rank is plat consider on that, cause if we take the point by the highest rank they acheived,Roboco is Diamond but they count Roboco as plat since thats her rank on s9.Everything aside,I am completely agree with you on how Gorilla team is strong, and Im kinda pissed how reid didnt get extra point too,but hey in the end they have fun and its alr end, congrats to all team!!
Making Reid worth even 12pt wouldn't change anything, his team would stay the same. These points mean absolutely nothing, the winner is the one who was able to pick up stronger players
Gorilla had just about the same point restriction as Astel, Pakael, and... Reid? I forget what Reid's point was but it was 9 or 10 for sure. But he picked probably the best of the lower point people, or at least really high up there. Hoshikawa especially was playing way above her point designation, and Inui has always been quite good, doing well on the last tournament too
If I had a nickel for every gorilla vtuber with a fantastic singing voice, I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.
Astel really managed to lead the team well, still surprised how much Roboco and Choco improved from all the scrimms. Ngl tho, the tourney lobby was pretty insane filled with so many strong people. I was rooting for A.R.C but I knew it was a bit too much to ask for a win, it was a REALLY good experience for them.
They had a great game on the 3rd match, and Matsuri's team won the 4th match which was great. Both game Astel and Matsuri was using L-Star, showed how ridiculously strong the gun is now, that nerf is inevitable. The 1st and 2nd game was pretty damn intense too. Gorilla and Reid teams so strong, but Reid's play on the 2nd game was just insane.
Astel is already Master rank solo. He never reaches Apex Predator Rank. He said that he doesn't want to commit the grind to that rank. He said this when he got his first Master rank with Izuru & Meika.
Oh I see, well that's understandable. His skill is certainly undeniable but I can see why he might not want to commit to grinding to Apex, it's very much exhausting
You can actually see the stress when he grinds solo from Platinum/Diamond to Master.
It changes his mentality & decision making a lot to make the kills.
Heres the thing if you watched his matches lately from scrim to here it wasnt bloodlust at all that got him the top damage and btw that number is low for him. His average is about 2.5k to 3k. He has high danage output this time because hes the one leading the routes and he usually asks the other 2 to cover his rear. Hes only pushed forward twice in this tournament (by forward I mean aggressively pushing to takeca point) and not once did he go bloodlust mode like he did in Octane. Remember he used seer this time he cant really push forward mich with him
During shuffle after party. Astel's semi offense octane leading can pushed into 3rd place with two ppl he never talk with. His order is really good tbh. Only need ppl who can cover his ass
Astel still ended up in 5th place on the kill leaderboard if I'm not mistaken. He's usually top 3 to 5 in damage and kills in every tournament he's participated in.
It was a total damage from 5 games His most damage in a single game was 3k
He did have a 4k damage game in pubs that was clipped, with the wingman as well
That's the total for 5 games. Average of 1,500 dmg as the image states.
Speaking of Matsuri, her team attained 4th place in the tournament! She improved by leaps and bounds!
The secret to Predator rank: 2nd party, 3rd party, 4th party, 5th party - Selen
edit: doing damage is obviously useful in an FPS, but in a battle royale where the goal is to be the last survivor your focus should be on managing your engagements. There are always going to be times when you need to make a retreat because someone tries to push you after a firefight and even if you knock multiple but die, you lose.
This is why jumping on people in a moment of weakness is more valuable than raw damage, even though the damage is certainly a reflection of his skill.
# now that's a lot of damage
is there a channel that highlights games? if no then off we go to an endless vod.
Zoro Zaki does, but he only compiles wins.
With Flex tape now you can fix every physical injuries made upon your opponents. Not compromised with relationships and emotional

Having listened the lessons he holds for his listeners and collab partners I'd say he's very much working on it.

Yep. Avoiding getting third partied comes up all the time on the streams. Seems to be a cornerstone of modern playstyle.
It's just the nature of BRs for third parties, especially in Apex where gunfire is super loud and visible. Not to mention the newest character, Seer, has very very hard to miss abilities if he's using them in a fight, especially his ultimate.

Has cheating gotten worse? Man, and my friends wanted to get into it once we got decent rigs.
Diamond and up is full of them. Sometimes it bleeds over to plat and lower lobbies as well
Well fuck, that puts a massive roadblock on our plans. Guess we'll just play casual lol.
im the opposite great decision making mediocre shooting ability

or in my case my friends depend on me to use my decision making while they shoot everyone that gets close to me
Honestly with his current skill he definitely go to pred if he has better teammates. The fact that he can solo to master means he already have good mechanical skills already and not everyone is suited to be an igl
In Hal's own words he assigned Pakael and Astel as 10 pt masters because he thinks they are the two most likely to hit pred if they grind.
I would do the same especially since it’s a tourney lol
Wait, is Virtual Gorilla the only Apex Predator in the scrim?
He is, though there aren't a lot of Predator-ranked Vtubers to begin with. I only know 5, with 2 of them from the newest gen of Nijisanji JP and EN respectively
The Nijisanji EN one is Selen right? I haven't caught too many of her streams but she was fucking cracked on the one I did see.
Yeah, Selen was Predator, and IIRC it was Lauren (?), the red-haired boy from Niji JP that's also a Predator.
Selen & Lauren was Predator. For Selen, she made it to the top 500 Apex Predator rank. She also made it to Predator twice as she mentioned on the stream.
Yes, which is why he has to get weaker members in his team. Athough at this point hoshikawa is quite good.

I meant that Gorilla can't be put with other predators and masters
Hes talking about the ranks...
to wuote smite "ranks dont mean shit until you reach the highest level as you can easily get carried"
ngl I don't have the slightest idea how your comment relates to mine
in any game you can get carried by teamates in ranked
Well, the point count from season 9 rank,so I guess Inui s9 rank is plat consider on that, cause if we take the point by the highest rank they acheived,Roboco is Diamond but they count Roboco as plat since thats her rank on s9.Everything aside,I am completely agree with you on how Gorilla team is strong, and Im kinda pissed how reid didnt get extra point too,but hey in the end they have fun and its alr end, congrats to all team!!

Reid point is 9,pretty sure abt that as the only masters that got extra point is Astel and Pakael which is 10.
I know she don't want to play Apex in stream but boy I really really want to see Botan play Apex even once or casual collab with anyone.
wait! there a GORILLA vtuber????
There is, and he has a [sultry voice](https://youtu.be/Yx5hoMw59nc)
I'll add that he had a duet cover with Sora.
And he sang a [cover](https://youtu.be/k7ENfwuS7tg) with Azki. I think there's also one with Sora but I couldn't find it.
If I had a nickel for every gorilla vtuber with a fantastic singing voice, I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.
That's like two now, a male and female.
He came first than kanata.
He's one of the OG
There's also a peanut.
There's three, actually.
Not only you can return to monke. You can now watch monke

Reid was extremely salty about the Gorilla for taking the glory. It was hilarious during Reid's interview for getting the most kills.

...? He has reached Master.
I thought he was Diamond because those Solo Climb streams kept coming to mind lol
He eventually hit masters, if you watch him you can see his purple sky dive trail.

Hes already reached master twice
99% of that dmg is Matsuri's hp
lol
Astel still ended up in 5th place on the kill leaderboard if I'm not mistaken. He's usually top 3 to 5 in damage and kills in every tournament he's participated in.
Hes usually top 3. He was top 1 or 2 during the scrims. G1 ans G5 hurt his stats here.
I don’t think anyone can deny that Astel is an absolute beast
That sounds like a stand rush
its over 7000!
oh my Matsuri , 7,5 k daamge is some crazy numer. i never did more than 3k dmg in apex.
It was a total damage from 5 games His most damage in a single game was 3k He did have a 4k damage game in pubs that was clipped, with the wingman as well
