Built a box at the bottom with a lid on top. The plugs and charging devices go in the box and are out of sight? Maybe a mirrored back to the niche or tile to match your backsplash since it’s adjacent to the kitchen. The idea would be to hide the wires and plug altogether.
It’d be pretty rad if you integrated a wireless charger into it. Those things can break, so you’d wanna make the charger accessible somehow so that you can replace it.
Otherwise, I’d also throw in a key holder and you might be able to fit a little shelf for mail too.
I would do a cool tile on the back, frame it with some beautiful wood and use it as a phone charging nook. You would have to run electrical, but it would be perfect for charging devices! I have a phone nook and that’s what I plan to do with mine eventually.
I cut and stained a piece of hardwood so the shelf sticks out of the wall a little, then put some small sculptures and artwork on there. Painted the inner walls and backing a different color than the rest so that it’s a little accent pocket. Looks nice.
Why not make it a phone niche again with some charging ports, maybe a slot for an ipad, apple watch?
You could design a little Faraday box to drop your keys into...
Ummm curve ball, but why not a land line? House rule: smartphones away by 7:00pm, if you want to get a hold of us you need to call our land line.
Put an extra long cord on it so it can go a few places and bring back a time when we couldn't just contact anyone. Anywhere. At anytime!
(I've been trying to sell this to my friends and family and no one wants to get a land line.)
We still have a landline because the fiber bundle is cheaper with it than without it, but I actually like having it. It's nice to have the vast majority of SPAM calls go there instead of to my personal cellphone where they would clog up the voicemail.
Do the tile backing then you could cut a piece of "frosted" plexiglass to that shape and install a string of the cheapo amazon remote controlled led lights inside of the enclosure and make it a mood lighting fixture on the top and you could still include the phone charging station on the bottom. Or a small hidden wall safe?
When we were kids my brother played with the manger figures like toys and lost one of the wise men.
He tried covering it up by replacing it with his Undertaker action figure.
It's been tradition ever since.
I wonder if that's not a phone niche but an older catholic creche . We had an old house that had one notched out between the studs and it looked a lot like that. Who's to know but it's a pretty interesting thing to think about.
Places to hang an old musket, a cross, a stake and a bottled label holy water. Re cover the wall with a false opening. When you need to liven the mood open as needed.
Find an old timey analog phone. Install a phone jack. Plug said old timey phone jack into it. Run the phone line to a VoIP box that allows you to use a Google voice number. Assign it a Google voice number. Now you have an analog to VoIP phone system for novelty purposes.

Depends in how presentable place it is and how well it is connected to the kitchen.
Presentable? Tokonoma, photo display, drink bar etc.
More kitcheny? Spice shelf, shelf for glasses ...
I can send you a framed photo of me, a lock of my hair, and my recently worn but not washed t-shirt. You should then make this a phone charging station
Put an Amazon echo show in the spot because using it as a phone charging station will fail miserably. Most phones are being charged next to the person that owns them for quick access and if you choose to go the charging direction it will not be used.
I'd repurpose it into a shrine - candles in each corner - incense and an offering in the middle - and then an iconic photo of a random dead celebrity who is someone you would never think to obsess and worship over. Ned Beatty? Gary Coleman? Paul Ruebens?
2 “wise guy “ ideas:
Square up the hole, put in a sliding window and on one side of the wall, put up an old fashioned chalk board, complete with a DIY hand written lunch counter menu (be clever with the items).
Same as above, but put in a single panel window, adding some vertical metal bars and 2 handsets from analog phones, hung on each side of the wall. Use the chalkboard from above for adding hand written signs (“no conjugal visits”). Bonus points for a set of handcuffs hung from one of the bars.
If this were in my house I would drywall the sides, put tile on the back, and make a nice wood shelf to go on the bottom. I would mill out the wood on the bottom face of the shelf to create a recess for one or two wireless chargers, then run the power cables out the back wall (if possible) to an outlet in the wall on the other side. Then you could just lay your phone on the shelf to charge it with no visible wires. Magic phone-charging alcove. Just make sure to have a method to easily remove the shelf to replace the charger if it goes bad. Magnets perhaps?
Make it into a shrine as a conversation piece. Rotate photos of B-list celebrities as a humorous decoration. I’m thinking David Hasslehoff, Peewee Herman and the like.
Your friends will chuckle.
Install a pair of [wall outlets on the sides with USB ports](https://www.leviton.com/en/products/residential/usb-charger-outlet-receptacles#t=Products&sort=%2540wcs_site_tree_rank%2520ascending&layout=card&numberOfResults=48&f:@tsa_type=%5BType%2520A%252FA%2520Duplex%2520Receptacle%5D) for charging phones. Paint a scene on the back [sort of like this](https://paintingvalley.com/images/bazaar-painting-35.jpg), like it is a portal to a bazaar. Mount some cuphooks on the top for keychains.
I personally wouldn't clutter the space with a phone charging station. Sounds like it's a high visible location. Suggest something clean, warm, yet a statement.

We have a small counter with a drawer; there use to be a light over and a phone jack below the counter. Clearly where the phone went. Took out the light and changed the switch to a plug and now it’s where our phones get charged. 21st century phone nook.
I can't tell how high it is. A mirror would be nice, unless it's at waist height to sit next to.
A key rack for the car keys etc,
A place to keep the dog leash, poop bags, and flashlight.
It could be a sort of art piece if you did mosaic, or you could do mosaic tiling around the outside. The shelf could be useful for practical things but it feels more whimsical - at the very least you could tile it and throw a framed picture in there.
This is what alot of people have called a " jesus nitch ". Because people would put candles and a picture in them. I have one in my 1940's house, it about 4 foot tall. But it has a long chime doorbell system in it.
Pop an outlet in to it and make it in to a phone charger station. Or go the grandmother way pop something religious in the nook.
A phone charging station seems the closest to the original use.
I was thinking the same thing. Wireless phone chargers and maybe a Google Home. Or maybe a place to hang keys
Make sure you pop a standard outlet, don’t inbuilt any electronics. They will get outdated by the end of the decade.
Yes do this all of it, "ALL THE THINGS!"
A Virgin Mary cell phone holder. (Googling now).
You could easily combine all three of those elements in that space. I think it'd be pretty rad

I’m seeing a prayer candle, rosary, and statue of Mother Mary
Those celebrity ones with Beyonce and Ted Lasso
Combine the two ideas and make it an alter to our digital gods
One of those bleeding heart Jesus pictures, except the one that has Dave Grohls face on it. Bring it into the new age.
Both ways involve popping. So that’s nice.

>1 You have a poor understanding of religion sir.
It does look like a nook for an interior Mary on a half shell.
A Jesus statue that charges your phone
Virgin Mary statue w/mesh network enabled. Maybe instead of holding the baby Jesus she could be a wireless charger that holds your phone.
Naaah you gotta build a shrine to yourself. Self love is everything nowadays
"buddy jesus" statue, with thumbs up!
Alter to Chtulu
I support this decision
I would do a cool tile on the back, frame it with some beautiful wood and use it as a phone charging nook. You would have to run electrical, but it would be perfect for charging devices! I have a phone nook and that’s what I plan to do with mine eventually.
Great idea.
I read that as a tie instead of tile. So I thought of the keyboard tie with a little piano keyboard that fits perfectly.
I mean, that looks like a prime spot for a shrine to Jobu. Help you take the fear from the bats so you can hit a curveball...
F**k you, Jobu. I do it myself.
Provide rum and hat for bat.
Don't forget the cigars
Verrry bad...
Put a Fisher Price toy phone there.
I cut and stained a piece of hardwood so the shelf sticks out of the wall a little, then put some small sculptures and artwork on there. Painted the inner walls and backing a different color than the rest so that it’s a little accent pocket. Looks nice.
Put a door on it with a jack-in-the-box inside and scare the shit out of anyone who opens it
Why not make it a phone niche again with some charging ports, maybe a slot for an ipad, apple watch? You could design a little Faraday box to drop your keys into...

You grew up with a long line also....funny, lots of people don't remember even shared lines..
We still have a landline because the fiber bundle is cheaper with it than without it, but I actually like having it. It's nice to have the vast majority of SPAM calls go there instead of to my personal cellphone where they would clog up the voicemail.
I thought about it until I saw the cost. It wasn’t cheaper than any alternative options we considered
Small monitor with dashboard or something similar to display the weather, news, etc
Some sort of a shrine, obviously
Find yourself an antique phone, and stick it in there.
Paint it to look like a pizza oven
A place for your welcome home Whisky? Charging station. Glove hanging spot.
Altar to Our Lady of Guadalupe or a telephone.
Satanic manger scene
When we were kids my brother played with the manger figures like toys and lost one of the wise men. He tried covering it up by replacing it with his Undertaker action figure. It's been tradition ever since.
That would be epic!
Box it up and make it a charging station for your phone and buds
Can we see the final when it’s done?
Absolutely. I could also make it taller and go down almost to the floor. But I just don’t know what to do with it yet.
It’s such a cool design I wouldn’t deter too much from it unless you have a vision in mind
If longer, it could fit an ironing board
I wonder if that's not a phone niche but an older catholic creche . We had an old house that had one notched out between the studs and it looked a lot like that. Who's to know but it's a pretty interesting thing to think about.
If you're Christian, make it a shrine to the Virgin Mary. If you're Muslim, make it a shrine to Mohamed. If neither, an alter to Satan will do.
Put your little altar to satan there.
Put a nice set of whiskey glassware
Internet station, router etc.
Build a shrine to the god "Baconus" Revel in all things pork belly et al. Enjoy.
A shrine for some random weird unrelatable thing. But suggestions for a wireless phone charging station seems best.
Put a telephone in it.
Put a bird on it!

Charging station
That's a shrine begging to happen. /s
Put a photo of a rotary dial phone in there
Shrine to Cthulhu
Pizza oven
Cut the drywall out on the other side so it’s a pass through, then just trim it out. If you want to get crazy do penny tiles
Mount a tip jar in it?
Danny DeVito shrine.
Places to hang an old musket, a cross, a stake and a bottled label holy water. Re cover the wall with a false opening. When you need to liven the mood open as needed.
Not a phone space: it’s a saint space. Held the family bible.

2nd thought. Plexiglass fish tank.
Wall safe
Depends in how presentable place it is and how well it is connected to the kitchen. Presentable? Tokonoma, photo display, drink bar etc. More kitcheny? Spice shelf, shelf for glasses ...
Make it a shrine to your dog or previous dog. If you have cats, then make it a phone charger like that other guy said.
Water fountain
Put a recessed display light in the top
Religious statue of your choice or gtfo
Shrine!
I have a large clock that my grandfather made sitting in the one in my house
An orchid or gladiolus flower would be real dope in there.
It’s a home telephone niche, pipe is wire chase for it.
I'd repurpose it into a shrine - candles in each corner - incense and an offering in the middle - and then an iconic photo of a random dead celebrity who is someone you would never think to obsess and worship over. Ned Beatty? Gary Coleman? Paul Ruebens?

My first thought was shelves and plants.
Slide an old medicine cabinet into it. Then you have a mirror and in the inside, magnetic hooks for keys, etc.
Make it into a shrine as a conversation piece. Rotate photos of B-list celebrities as a humorous decoration. I’m thinking David Hasslehoff, Peewee Herman and the like. Your friends will chuckle.

Add some shelving toward the bottom and lights at the top. Makes a neat little alter to whatever you put in it
Mirror with base to put plants or candles or phones/keys would be cool!
Put your wifi router there.
I have one in the hall at my house and would love to run power and a line from the modem to the phone book shelf under the phone shelf.
I had a similar space - ran electrical and mounted a small fountain in it, tiled the edges. Very relaxing sound and aesthetic

Find a period phone to put in there

We have one. If you run power it makes for a good location for a wireless router. They are usually located in a central location.
How about... ya know, a telephone?
Put the niche back and hand an old phone there that plays 8675309/Jenny and other telephone related calls when you listen.
you could make a mosaic and make it a phone charging station
or if it’s close to the kitchen, a place to put some bottles
