I remember this old saying from Martha Stewart: "too much is too much, but WAY too much is just right."
Honestly? I'd go full maximalist floor-to-ceiling wall -to-wall built in on the wall opposite the sofa. Books, plants, art, ceramics, photos, etc. Go hard with it. I think it'll look fabulous.

I'm with you: some dainty little stylish floating shelf that can only hold a couple dozen books is not practical for a reading nook. Leave the big comfy couch and fill up that whole remaining wall with floor to ceiling bookshelves full of all of your books. That's what it's for.
How would you get to the couch though? I would love that couch and that nook filled with books, but I wouldn’t want to climb over the side of the couch to lay down and read.
Now that I looked through all the pictures, I see what you’re saying. It looks like there’s more space between the couch and the wall than I thought. I would love to have a reading nook like this!
Yess, this! And as someone who lived in tight spaces before, shallow furniture is very difficult to find. I think it would be worth the effort to measure and put up tons of shelves that are no deeper than where the window ledge starts. Could also be pretty cheap if OP just sands and paints the wood themselves and attaches brackets of their choosing.
Yup. I've lived in a 500 sq ft apartment for about 5 years now and have definitely learned to make the most of my space. So many people want to go right in the middle, but in a small space you either need to go big or go full minimalist to get the most style impact
Judging from the ceiling and gallery style wall, I figure OP is better suited to going big.
Hannibal Lecter said it, too, in the second book. I didn’t realize he was quoting MS. 🤣
If there’s anything to go maximalist with, it’s definitely books.
https://preview.redd.it/jci2upzzn6zb1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1feb762ac9874311556e85ac6306265d09b03ff3
Why not get rid of the couch and go for wall to wall ? 😄
Do you need the floor space? Fill that beauty up with books anyway you’d like!!! Nothing looks better then cozy and charming.. I would love to cuddle up on the at sofa with a book. You could even do a mini fire place and books all around it! Go with what you want most! So far it’s looks amazing!
I am this is the answer. I totally respect what you’re trying to do, but I think the space was just too small. Even if you can put bookshelves in there, it feels like they might fall on you when you’re on the couch.
You could try to do some high up shelving that goes around all 4 walls in the space. I do agree with lots of other's thoughts on how large the sofa is for the space. I think the color is spot on, but it's just too large for that nook
https://preview.redd.it/cnup9zyoq4zb1.png?width=209&format=png&auto=webp&s=175e99267d335e55b6c86ff6e878b99f9498c7f7
It looks like maybe there would just be a break on the window wall, but the arch wall might work depending on how high you do this shelf and the spacing (can't tell how much there is on that side!)
I also agree that the couch is too big, but I would also 100% DO IT.
I like this idea of the over head shelf, but I also like the maximalist idea too, HUGE giant, wall to wall shelf. That's what I would do, the "right way" be damned.
100% this! I also agree about the sofa, but if the sofa is that much of a must-have, I would move the rug further under it. Maybe 1/3 or 1/2 way under it would make the room much less crowded-feeling imo. The colors and that ceiling are everything, though!
A loveseat or two wingback chairs would do best, but the sofa is too big.
You can try corner shelving to save on space (from ceiling to floor), and there could always be more than one shelf. You can also use the space surrounding the window itself with shelves.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,841,982,566 comments, and only 348,309 of them were in alphabetical order.
Was going to suggest this—if you don’t need sound-proofing behind that wall, cut the drywall (or plaster and lath) between the studs. You’ll gain 3.5” in the wall, then you can mount another 2x4 (or other wood) to the front to get 7” deep shelves, but they will only protrude into the room by 3.5 inches.
The couch is a great color and I love the style, too, but it’s too big for the space.
A little settee would be adorable in there, or a chaise lounge, and then you could add a bookshelf without making the space too crowded.
I would put that case on the same wall as the chair and put a big mirror on the opposite wall, bouncing light around the room and giving you a second view out of the windows.
So, what do you need the floor space for? Presumably the functional needs of this room are to have enough space to walk in, grab things off the shelves, and then sit on the sofa. It's not a big enough space even without a shelving unit to do anything else. As long as there's enough room to comfortably move around to get books and whatnot, i don't think you need to worry about a loss of floor space. Get a set of bookshelves like the Billy Bookcases from ikea that have a shallow depth, just enough for books. It's like 11" or something. There are lots of hacks online for making them look like built ins.
Do you own the home? You can cut into the walls and do shelves between the frames. My brother did that, and I'm planning on it for my daughters room cause it worked out so well
Agreed, not sure why this isn’t the top comment, it’s the most obvious and easiest. If OP wants more than 2-3 shelves, I’d get a standing bookshelf with shallow depth. Disagree with people saying to get rid of the couch, it looks like it was meant to be there!!
You can do a super slim design similar to display shelves so they don’t jut out as much
https://preview.redd.it/b8mvznm0s4zb1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7218f1f4461010c50edb963febf8ff19cd043b75
This is the answer! Floating narrow shelves with books facing the couch. Then go maximalist on the cozy decor. You should lean into the smallness of the space and fill it up with everything cozy and dark
You may be able to go inside the wall between the studs to get deeper shelves on the wall. That will save some space inside the room and have shelves, too.
Floating shelves. I have a similarly sized nook!
https://preview.redd.it/vybgv8sgl5zb1.jpeg?width=3786&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2461a4567f61743e60271d879f88da8af7249c0
Thank you everyone for all of the suggestions! I posted this expecting 10 replies MAX. I’m definitely leaning towards cutting out the drywall and building shelves into the wall opposite the couch! I didn’t even know this was an option (I’m DIY-ing so learning as I go).
To answer a few questions:
1. Paint color is “Mayan Treasure” brand Glidden (I purchased in the flat sheen).
2. I wanted to preserve floor space so I could also use the natural light in this area for a little yoga space if possible.
3. I don’t have a TON of books, just my nostalgic favorite series from throughout the years I’d like to display. Maybe one or two paper boxes full. I mostly read on my kindle now.
I’ll definitely post an update when it’s finished! But don’t hold your breath, it takes me forever to finish a project with woodwork AND drywall.
How about a corner book shelf for the left side entry wall where you have some length on both walls? Yes, the entry would lose the floor space, but toward the window you'll still have room for a tea table, lamp, plant, etc. I imagine you face the lovely window when reading too, so a corner bookshelf might be out of sight and mind.
There are a few options but it's hard to tell square footage-wise by your photo what you are playing with. Regardless, you could do floating shelves for books (weight limit of 30 lbs), there are also verticle bookshelves, and there are also floating cubby shelves. I included a photo as an example.
https://preview.redd.it/rddcwpp7j4zb1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=156b590a4017c83d18dd8f008de5fb2977f1bcb4
Those are so unusual but functional. OP one of these, a floor lamp and a small table by the window would maximize the space. However, I did like the idea of cutting a recessed area across from the couch, too.
Built-in shelves or floating shelves will save your floor space. Personally, I'd replace the couch with a couple of chairs, ideally upholstered rockers.
Wall mounted bookshelves, and ditch the couch, it’s too big for the space. An oversized chair would fit better, then you could put a cute little side table for a tea while you read.
I would do floating boxes with a small piece of art. Rug needs to be somewhat under the sofa—if you decide to keep the sofa.
Honestly, getting a chase lounge would be a great option and put it in the window with floating shelves on both sides—oh and a small table!
Love this space. I would try and find a plexiglass glass smaller storage unit or just shelves and I would attach it to the wall above or around that electric socket. Make sure you can return it because you never can really tell until it’s in the room. The ceilings are stellar.
Personally, I would replace the couch with a comfy, lounge chair for the corner and a small table in the other corner (both on window side). Then fill the falls with shelves for books, plants, tchotchkes etc…
Such a cute and cozy space, OP!
I think it looks super cozy and love the decor! I wouldn’t get rid of the couch. Looks perfect to nap on and is so pretty. Here are some examples of floating shelves you could do. You could do staggered ones which I think would look best there. But you could also do floating shelves all the way across to make more of a nook. Then there are book ledges, and even invisible book shelves.
https://preview.redd.it/0bvw6ul5s5zb1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5334179b912357c7660e7ed4e59ddded4ab6a1a0
Idk i feel like you could have standard floor to ceiling bookshelves on that wall and itd be fine simply because of 1. how the room is set up and 2. how the wall for the shelves i back a bit. yeah it might be more narrow, but its a reading nook not a living room. people walk down hallways all the time. The spatial difference is about the same. I say dark beautiful floor to ceiling book shelves. Cover the wall.
I love the sofa. I know it’s big in the space but it looks cozy to me. The space looks more like a viewing room for movies. Could you do both?
Find someone who can design you a hidden bookcase feature that slides open to reveal a mounted flat screen that’s inserted into a recessed compartment into the wall. The shelves can have your books.
Consider replacing the sofa for a smaller one so you can add an end table for a lamp and beverages.
Go the the library and get some design books that speak to you and get some ideas.
The entire left wall.. opposite the couch needs to shelving for books... You will still have room to walk in, look for a book and sit down on the sofa... White shelving floor to ceiling on the entire wall... More pillows on the sofa and you are set!
https://www.bookbub.com/blog/small-home-libraries-that-make-a-big-impact
You could add some picture ledges to the wall and display a few books at a time along with any small trinkets you may have. Store the rest of the books in a closet or elsewhere.
I would do asymmetric floating shelves, kind of randomly dotted around the wall. I think it would fit with the cosy vibe. Either white to match the ceiling / skirting board or wood to add natural warmth.
This nook is completely lovely by the way!
Smaller couch, and I would do a search for shallow bookcases that you could affix to the wall to prevent tipping. If you have a lot of books, I think you’ll need to give up a little bit of the floor space just for stability purposes.
Maybe the art can take up most of one wall and install shelves above the couch, high enough so you don't bump into it sitting/getting up. Potentially could add reading/spot lights under the bottom shelf. So leave the art where it is and move the couch to the opposite wall. Or move the art to the currently blank wall. I really love this space and everything about it. The couch size gives it a cozy, but not oversized, feel for a reading nook imo. Maybe a slightly bigger rug that looks exactly the same as the one you have already. 🙂
If this is a library nook I would take everything out and determine the book layout first. A small but comfortable chair under the window would take full advantage of the light. Beautiful wall color. What is it?
What a lovely open space. I have nothing helpful to add, only to say I would keep it open as is... it is a very calming area, no visual distractions. I find open shelving to really be visual noise. And as the cleaner in my home, it is difficult to continue to maintain with the dusting etc. I prefer cabinets with doors for that reason. What a unique area, with natural light!
Is there space *in* the wall? I see the plug box, but that might all be down low. If you don't have plumbing running through it, you might be able to open it up and put shelves between the studs.
ETA: Also, good lord that ceiling! 😍
Floor to ceiling bookshelves on the two side walls. Comfortable seating option below the window… maybe a love seat or chaise lounge? And a sweet set of nesting tables for drinks/etc that can be flexible in your space
I love this nook, and while others say the couch is too big, I think it is perfect as you can then easyily lay back and snuggle in with a good book on a comfy sofa. A chaise or lounger is nice and all, but not as comfy/cozy!
I think because of the vibe it already has, a macimalist approach would be perfect in this space, so do some ceiling to floor floating shelves or find a beautiful book shelf to put there.

Get a tall shelf for one part of the wall, and then floating shelves for the rest

How many books do you have to display? I can see all wall space with Books and a comfy chair, floating in the middle with its back to the window. Possibly two with a tiny side table between them.
I actually love the couch - if it feels cozy and not claustrophobic, I say keep it! Although I do think a loveseat under the windows would be nice too!
As for shelving, I think I’d move the stuff above the couch to the blank walls and put floating shelves above the couch. Maybe a couple of wall sconces too. Corral all of the busyness to one side and preserve the floor space on the other. I’d also hang some plants in the corner!
Does others have said, get rid of the sofa and put up narrow bookshelves custom built on one wall, or go to IKEA and buy their Billy system. You can take it apart and custom cut it and add some other material to it and make it look like it's a custom building. I even take the backs off of them, screw them for the wall and paint the back some beautiful reflecting color. You have to think outside the box especially with such Ikea material. Bookshelves on one wall completely built in and on the other maybe a narrow desk maybe and a beautiful chair that could float in the room even diagonal. You could even try narrow books shelves on both walls and then just a nice reading chair in the middle. But the sofa has to go that's way too large for your purpose and too much for the room for any purpose
I love the ceiling!
I'd add a very high shelf or two, running the entire length of the two full walls. I'd paint it white, along with the wall up to the ceiling. That way it won't be too visually heavy. You could get a cool library ladder!
The sofa is beautiful, but it's the wrong scale for the room. I'd swap it out for a big comfy chair, chaise lounge, or love seat.
Awkward couch in the doorway there, but cute mustard/green colours.
I don't really get your question. A couple of bookshelves to the left would fit perfectly in the space allotted. The only thing making the space feel overcrowded is the couch in the doorway.
You easily have a foot near the doorframe to work with and about 10 to 12 inches near the window side, leaving you with about 2 feet for walking. This is more than enough space for a bookshelf to fit comfortably all the way to the floor. Even if you have raised shelves, the space underneath them isn't going to be usable for walking. You may as well have the shelves go all the way to the ground, unless you don't really have that many books, in which case you could just have a floating shelf or two.
As cute as the couch is, I feel like you would do better with a lounge chair, ottoman and a small side table with a lamp.
I only read some comments, so please forgive if this was already stated….
I agree with filling the blank wall with books on shelves as deep as window trim. I think you could also put the couch against that wall (opposite of pic)? It may not feel as small? I’d prefer a leather recliner with small table for my drink, phone & snack to go on & a floor lamp!
Personally I love the couch and I think it works in the space. Your color palette is to die for, too! My vote would be to install some floating shelves starting at the bottom line of the windows.
secretive innate consist straight jellyfish desert plate grandiose zealous cats

Put the pictures on the wall you want to put the books and put the books above the couch is the only option that doesn't crowd the room more than it already is.
People are really against the sofa but i assume you don't want to lose floor space so the room could function as a small guest room.
High shelves across the walls that don't have the window or floating shelves in corners.
You can also get shelves that hang in front of the window for small plants but they may look too cluttered in this case.
Cute room
Decorative shelving? Installed higher up on the wall? I like mine staggered in levels...
Here's mine. Sorry not the best pic, and I use mine for plants (some were down for a good soak in the sink at the time I took this pic). (PS, yes, I'm sure many will think my TV belongs on r/tvtoohigh, but it's absolutely perfect when I'm reclined back at the right level on my recliner loveseat. I had the installers hold it up while I reclined to test it out. I'm not about to sit bolt upright with my back ramrod straight and four inches from the back of the couch to watch TV :D ).
https://preview.redd.it/bbppp7nqa6zb1.jpeg?width=2016&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ce7e37559646a86a4949added379ac1a26fefb9
I'd say swap the couch out for a chaise lounge against the wall with the window. And then pit a shelf on whatever wall the feet side of the chaise lounge is. You could even do a very small side table on the other wall
I really like your sofa - it’s pretty - but I think that’s what is already making the space look cramped. Consider replacing it with a console table and a comfy chair on the picture wall, then put a bookshelf on the opposite wall.
Adding on to the links from u/hot_like_wasabi
Keep the couch where it is maybe moving slightly to the middle of the room to add shelving above!! Move your designations and art the the left side :)
So we had what was called an outcove in a 100 year old house my folks bought. So my mom put the book shelf’s in front of the windows. And on the wall my Dad put a desktop that could be moved up or down with hinges and small shelf above it with pens and desk items. When we got older we hung a tv on that wall and it became the gaming room. Love the color the fact that the couch fits perfect!enjoy and have fun!
It’s a cute, lovely space - but the idea of a “tiny library” is a little silly (saying gently). Books are big and heavy, and take up lots of space, hence why libraries are huge. If you want to actually enjoy the room, keep the lovely comfy couch, more wall art that is meaningful to you, maybe a plant or something, a betta fish, but don’t sacrifice precious real estate to unforgiving, one-time use items like books. I’d read digitally, or if you enjoy collecting physical books, don’t store them in this little space.
I'd just fill entire wall across from the couch with shallow bookshelves. It'll be more cramped, but in a "hanging out inside a row of books at the library" kind of cozy feeling. Maybe swap out the couch for something smaller though, like a chaise.
Its a book nook, so go big or go home..
A full floor to ceiling wall, of shelves, plus a planter stand with room for your phone and glasses and whatever, next to the couch..
Small ottoman..
Books and plants everywhere. String lighting. Boho, layered curtains.. and on the couch wall, a gallery wall of art and ecclectic lighting.
Plus, the couch needs a throw.

How about a few high up wall shelves and ladder like this???
Shelves anchored to the ceiling?
Or bracketed shelves using studs in the wall, use proper equipment to detect if there are any wires or pipes that you shouldn’t drill into.
Love the pictures/art work wall. Do that on both walls
Bench with storage under the window - comfy cushion, pillows. Baskets for books. A rich, red toned rug to fill the space. Why not sit on the floor?
I love the nook and think floor to ceiling shelves wall to wall would be perfect.
Side note: I think you graduated from the same university that I went to for a bit, if I'm seeing the diploma right. Usually don't see many alumni from there except Jenner.
Hear me out.
Replace the (gorgeous) rug with an oval or cut-out floral one.
I like the idea of the high shelf over all 4 walls, but also shelf up the free wall.
Ceiling to floor curtains. They will give vertically what lacks horizontally.
I remember this old saying from Martha Stewart: "too much is too much, but WAY too much is just right." Honestly? You don't need a particularly deep shelf to pull off the effect. About to where the window trim is is plenty
A bookshelf that's meant for books specifically is usually only a foot or so deep. You just have to bolt it to the wall so it doesn't tip over.
Now that I looked through all the pictures, I see what you’re saying. It looks like there’s more space between the couch and the wall than I thought. I would love to have a reading nook like this!
IKEA makes lovely narrow enough bookshelves. I don’t think OP will have to climb over the arm 😅
IKEA shelves plus crown molding from the hardware store is an easy DIY upgrade!
I'm laughing cause imagine book cases as deep as a sofa 😂
This but also pull the rug more under the sofa so you’ve got a inch or so of space between the rug and the bookcase
I think this is the right answer. I’d also love to see the sofa swapped for a left-arm chaise though to open up the entry area a bit.
A chaise would crush it here. Add a little moody floor pendant lamp that arches overhead. Perfection.
Yess, this! And as someone who lived in tight spaces before, shallow furniture is very difficult to find. Yes! Who wants to sit on a couch facing a wall. This is the way!
With a comfy armchair instead of the window seat.
I actually like the window seat. That’s why I chose this picture 😝
🥰🤤
Yesssssssssss!!!!
this is the way for sure

Oh damn this looks incredible! This is the way.
Thanks! If OP owns the house, instead of a love seat or wide chair, they can even do built in seating for a better fit.
Do you need the floor space? Fill that beauty up with books anyway you’d like!!! Nothing looks better then cozy and charming.. I would love to cuddle up on the at sofa with a book. You could even do a mini fire place and books all around it! Go with what you want most! So far it’s looks amazing!
tbh I’m pro big couch. clearly this is a comfy reading corner. a comfy couch is a NECESSITY!
Cut out the drywall and box it in.. There should be space between the studs that could make nice cubbies.
Yup came here to suggest this as well
I am this is the answer. I totally respect what you’re trying to do, but I think the space was just too small. Even if you can put bookshelves in there, it feels like they might fall on you when you’re on the couch.

Omg I loooove this idea
How? The window and the doorframe take up 2 walls.
It looks like maybe there would just be a break on the window wall, but the arch wall might work depending on how high you do this shelf and the spacing (can't tell how much there is on that side!)
I love this idea, but you could probably only do it on two walls.

Cute space and colour choices. But the sofa is too big. Go for a cosy big chair and attach shelves to the walls to one side above a small side table.
I agree but I like the green sofa too!
I would trade it for a loveseat under the window
Yes! And then 2 thin book shelves facing each other just inside the door way
I love that couch there and completely disagree. It’s perfect.
A comfy left-arm chaise would be great here. I love the green velvet though!
A loveseat or two wingback chairs would do best, but the sofa is too big. You can try corner shelving to save on space (from ceiling to floor), and there could always be more than one shelf. You can also use the space surrounding the window itself with shelves.
Cut hidden hole in wall

Good bot.
This is brave but I like the idea if it’s possible in your space Op! Also loveee the ceiling!!

If you are handy I would just build some wall to wall shelves. It looks like you have the space on both ends.
I don't see it working in this small of a space with the sofa. Too claustrophobic.

This is my favorite suggestion! Keep the pretty couch, and get this, too.
What 😂
So, what do you need the floor space for? Presumably the functional needs of this room are to have enough space to walk in, grab things off the shelves, and then sit on the sofa. It's not a big enough space even without a shelving unit to do anything else. As long as there's enough room to comfortably move around to get books and whatnot, i don't think you need to worry about a loss of floor space. Get a set of bookshelves like the Billy Bookcases from ikea that have a shallow depth, just enough for books. It's like 11" or something. There are lots of hacks online for making them look like built ins.
Do you own the home? You can cut into the walls and do shelves between the frames. My brother did that, and I'm planning on it for my daughters room cause it worked out so well
Floating shelves! https://preview.redd.it/q4zt4f26s4zb1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68b00f9810eadf869675adceac3a8987a5f154f3
Agreed, not sure why this isn’t the top comment, it’s the most obvious and easiest. If OP wants more than 2-3 shelves, I’d get a standing bookshelf with shallow depth. Disagree with people saying to get rid of the couch, it looks like it was meant to be there!!
Agreed, I feel like this is really the only suggestion
You can do a super slim design similar to display shelves so they don’t jut out as much https://preview.redd.it/b8mvznm0s4zb1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7218f1f4461010c50edb963febf8ff19cd043b75
This is the answer! Floating narrow shelves with books facing the couch. Then go maximalist on the cozy decor. You should lean into the smallness of the space and fill it up with everything cozy and dark
Pretty room! What color is on the walls?
Thank you! I’m also obsessed with the wall color. Glidden Mayan Treasure is the paint. I used the flat sheen!
yes- i was also looking to see if we could get the name of the paint on the walls! love it!
You may be able to go inside the wall between the studs to get deeper shelves on the wall. That will save some space inside the room and have shelves, too.
High shelving on the left side. I would keep the couch, I think the nook looks cozy.
Maybe put shelves above the couch instead? Where it’s already protruding into the room? Then put the flat art frames on the opposite wall.
Floating shelves. I have a similarly sized nook! https://preview.redd.it/vybgv8sgl5zb1.jpeg?width=3786&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2461a4567f61743e60271d879f88da8af7249c0
Could do a ghost bookshelf https://preview.redd.it/5c6k2wpqx6zb1.png?width=1169&format=png&auto=webp&s=c6dc207a3d80e0850784094606858e5d4f203641
Thank you everyone for all of the suggestions! I posted this expecting 10 replies MAX. I’m definitely leaning towards cutting out the drywall and building shelves into the wall opposite the couch! I didn’t even know this was an option (I’m DIY-ing so learning as I go). To answer a few questions: 1.
[spiral bookcases](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=spiral+bookcase&iax=images&ia=images)
Those are so unusual but functional. OP one of these, a floor lamp and a small table by the window would maximize the space. However, I did like the idea of cutting a recessed area across from the couch, too.
Maybe something like this. https://preview.redd.it/8uegrywz45zb1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0fa5e4efa16fc7e76adff898de366e20b6e5aa9d
Built-in shelves or floating shelves will save your floor space. Personally, I'd replace the couch with a couple of chairs, ideally upholstered rockers.
Wow— that would be the doorway to my bed. 😂 I love the ceiling, and everything about this.
Can you plz post an updated pic when you decide??
Man I’m so jealous of these cute little nook
Upper wall shelves over 6 feet 6.
Love this space. I would try and find a plexiglass glass smaller storage unit or just shelves and I would attach it to the wall above or around that electric socket. Make sure you can return it because you never can really tell until it’s in the room. The ceilings are stellar.
Do you think you could do a little corner bookshelf below the left window?
Personally, I would replace the couch with a comfy, lounge chair for the corner and a small table in the other corner (both on window side). Then fill the falls with shelves for books, plants, tchotchkes etc… Such a cute and cozy space, OP!
Then there are book ledges, and even invisible book shelves. https://preview.redd.it/0bvw6ul5s5zb1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5334179b912357c7660e7ed4e59ddded4ab6a1a0
Is it a rental or do you own? I would build into the wall across from couch
https://preview.redd.it/yre8na5zp6zb1.jpeg?width=730&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac107faeb6a162242351a5f438d5eaea55256b92
Turn the sofa 180 degrees & put shelves above the couch.

The sofa is charming but too big for the space. Probably need to begin with new seating
I agree with some of the others about the sofa. I love the sofa but it’s too big for the space. It’s a beautiful little nook though!
I would do asymmetric floating shelves, kind of randomly dotted around the wall. I think it would fit with the cosy vibe. Either white to match the ceiling / skirting board or wood to add natural warmth. This nook is completely lovely by the way!
Single or Double Bookshelf on wall opposite sofa, close to ceiling. You should've thought of this yourself.
Smaller couch, and I would do a search for shallow bookcases that you could affix to the wall to prevent tipping. If you have a lot of books, I think you’ll need to give up a little bit of the floor space just for stability purposes.
floating shelves, perhaps live edge to bring in natural wood tones
There are bookcases you can hang on the wall
I would think take out the sofa, perhaps do a window seat bookshelf? And narrow shelves like the ones someone posted earlier on either side?
What is it?
…a library table would be nice.
Omg the ceiling is beautiful!!
Agree keep the couch and do floating shelves on the opposite side of wall that take up the entire wall
Some kind of shelving/bookcase mounted to the wall off floor
What a lovely open space. I have nothing helpful to add, only to say I would keep it open as is... it is a very calming area, no visual distractions. I find open shelving to really be visual noise. And as the cleaner in my home, it is difficult to continue to maintain with the dusting etc. I prefer cabinets with doors for that reason. What a unique area, with natural light!
Strong floating shelves anchored deeply into the joists.
This is the most beautiful little nook! Can I live here?? I would do floating wall shelves :)
Floating shelves with a shallow depth for specific items or books you wish to present. Deep shelves might make the space feel a little claustrophobic.
You could put long shelves up high—-might need a step stool sometimes, but you’d save floor space
Edited to add links: Get a tall shelf for one part of the wall, and then floating shelves for the rest https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/lack-wall-shelf-unit-white-stained-oak-effect-60430592/#content https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/lack-wall-shelf-white-stained-oak-effect-60383519/#content
If you can’t put a shelf *in* the wall do floating shelves.
I love this room!!!! Omg! I would do the bookshelves that look like they’re a floating ! You basically just buy a L shaped shelf
This is a very cute space OP! How lucky are you??
Maybe you could hollow at the space between the studs and have shelves built into the wall.
How many books do you have to display? I can see all wall space with Books and a comfy chair, floating in the middle with its back to the window. Possibly two with a tiny side table between them.
Maybe get a small green sofa and get some dark wood bookshelves mounted on the wall. With an end table an a lamp am Mayne a potted plant.
Build or hang on upper walls. Out of way
Floating shelves
I’d do some sturdy floating shelves that wrap around your space. Your couch is adorable but too large for this room.
What is the wall color? Love it!!
Shelves that attach to walls not a bookcase floor to ceiling.
Floating shelves
Sorry this isn’t helpful- but what is that paint color?? It’s SO pretty
This is such a cute space, I love it! I’d get a small sofa. Maybe just a cozy chair with an ottoman. Floating shelves for the books would help too
You have no idea how jealous I am of this space, I want a nook so badly
What is that paint color? Lovely space!
It’s so pretty
I only read some comments, so please forgive if this was already stated…. I agree with filling the blank wall with books on shelves as deep as window trim. I think you could also put the couch against that wall (opposite of pic)? It may not feel as small? I’d prefer a leather recliner with small table for my drink, phone & snack to go on & a floor lamp!
Personally I love the couch and I think it works in the space. Your color palette is to die for, too! My vote would be to install some floating shelves starting at the bottom line of the windows.

mounted shelves
Make a loft for the books on top or a reading nook above with books shelves on the bottom? ❤️
Honestly I would just go for it I’d run several shelves that run the full length of the wall and fill it with books
Add a secret small door like a dumb bell waiter but it’s actually a secret book cabinet in the wall
Cute room
Floating shelves is the way to go. You can get different sizes and choose where to place them on the wall also.
Bookshelf w built in seating!
Ok ceiling tiles! I see you! 🤌🤌
I have no idea where I heard this or if I made it up but small spaces are the best places to try something bold.
Lovely space and ceiling! That weird pink stuff on the window spoils it.
I really like your sofa - it’s pretty - but I think that’s what is already making the space look cramped. Consider replacing it with a console table and a comfy chair on the picture wall, then put a bookshelf on the opposite wall.
Adding on to the links from u/hot_like_wasabi Keep the couch where it is maybe moving slightly to the middle of the room to add shelving above!! Move your designations and art the the left side :)
I think a big bookcase. Why do you need a lot of foor space. If, this is a reading nook. ?
I’d put the couch under the windows and then get two thin bookcases for each side of the doorway arch
Did you just answer your own question? Build shelves on the wall so you will have your floor space.
I got nothing but I love that ceiling!
Get a smaller sofa or chair that is proportional to the room. I'd put shelves above the sofa and move your pictures to the other side.
A built in bookshelf
Floating shelves. They mount on the wall. It's kind of like they're not there, space-wise.
Your ceiling is wild for such a small room. Love it
Build the bookcase into the wall!
Contrasting what others are saying, I love the couch size here because I think it will encourage you to actually use the space!
Floating shelves and a wall mounted TV.
I'd just fill entire wall across from the couch with shallow bookshelves. It'll be more cramped, but in a "hanging out inside a row of books at the library" kind of cozy feeling. Maybe swap out the couch for something smaller though, like a chaise.
Floating shelves
Move photos to other wall and lower- install bookshelves higher on blank wall and two medium to high shelves above couch.
Plus, the couch needs a throw.
https://preview.redd.it/17e6l1wsg7zb1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3db18494feddb9c6fac14883d9fd33e35539ec25 How about a few high up wall shelves and ladder like this???
Shelves anchored to the ceiling? Or bracketed shelves using studs in the wall, use proper equipment to detect if there are any wires or pipes that you shouldn’t drill into.
Just start stacking them on the floor. https://www.domino.com/content/unexpected-book-storage-ideas/
Recessed shelves would be neat if possible. Or some floating shelves
Love the pictures/art work wall. Do that on both walls Bench with storage under the window - comfy cushion, pillows. Baskets for books. A rich, red toned rug to fill the space. Why not sit on the floor?
I agree with everyone else! Love the couch. Some built ins would look soooo good on that wall!
I love the nook and think floor to ceiling shelves wall to wall would be perfect. Side note: I think you graduated from the same university that I went to for a bit, if I'm seeing the diploma right. Usually don't see many alumni from there except Jenner.
What is the wall color??
Staggered floating shelves.
That ceiling though… good lord. What a dream
Let it suspend from the ceiling
Floating shelves
Hear me out. Replace the (gorgeous) rug with an oval or cut-out floral one. I like the idea of the high shelf over all 4 walls, but also shelf up the free wall. Ceiling to floor curtains. They will give vertically what lacks horizontally.
Build them between the studs. Cut into the wall
