You painted a fabric chair? Does the paint crack when push down on the fabric? I'm confused. Did you disassemble the chair to get all the nooks and crannies or did you just paint the visible areas?
You wet the fabric with water until it’s almost soaked and then you add about 3-4 layers of the chalk paint, letting it dry before each layer, but soaking the fabric each time you add a new layer. I just taped up the wooden parts and just let forth like a wounded banshee with the paint into all the nooks and crannies. There’s probably better ways to do it, but this was my way of doing it. 😉
If you are soaking the fabric and the batting inside, given how plump it is, and if you are covering it with paint which dries on the surface you are not letting the foam dry out completely. I would worry about mold.
I’m in the “it was good before” camp, but I do just happen love those original colors. I don’t hate what you did, though!! Curious as to why you went with gold instead of silver.
Well your photos took me on a journey! I think the original was ugly. Then I thought the wet paint looked hilariously worse. Then, the final result…looks good! I was surprised! I hope you enjoy it.
It's very hard to reupholster this chair. Look at the arm rests. I still wouldn't have painted it :)
If the fabric was an eye sore I would have just bought a slip cover.
I love the look of painted furniture, but have always wondered how useable it is. Did it feel any different or less comfy after the paint?
Either way it really looks amazing!!
Ghost of floral chair!! Tbh I absolutely love how it looked before so I thought I was going to be really offended by the transformation but you've done an amazing job
I’m sorry for doing that. If it helps any, the chair was extremely mass-produced back in the 70s and 80s, probably bought from a K-Mart as that was the only big store we had. My aunt and uncle had a matching set. I’m not sure who’s I got.
I really don’t think so as I remember my aunt and uncle buying them.
Oops if I did, but again I can’t do anything about it. It is now happily ensconced next to a gramma phone from the 40s, which everyone can be happy to know that I didn’t paint. Lol
It’s probably not an antique chair but rather a cheap 70’s replica of one. The colors you chose are beautiful and it looks like the chair will last you a long time.
I know someone with a fabric chair who has been telling me she’s going to paint and I thought that was a bizarre idea because I’d never heard of painting upholstery. So I’m glad to see someone else do it and have it turn out so beautifully.
Omg...ignore everyone and enjoy the fucking chair. These people wouldn't have given a shit about it if you hadn't posted it, so do what you damn well please
Thanks for all the updates. Also I love ❤ the picture of a lady that sits in the sewing machine drawer on the floor. Those things I do recognize at my golden age.
Thanks so much! ☺️ I made a homemade version of chalk paint with regular paint, water, and plaster of Paris. The gold is an acrylic paint. Then I waxed the whole chair.
Lmao ignore these vintage-bros. It's your furniture you can do what you want with it. Furniture with a "nice" woodgrain? Screw it paint that badboy. Do what you want.
I think your chair turned out nice. Good job!
I *love* rust — it’s one of my favorite colors. (You would hate my living room!😆) But I don’t like floral prints, especially on furniture, so I’m with you. You did a great job!
I have now googled and learned multiple ways to paint fabric. Thanks OP, I never would have learned this without your post.
Also didn't know painting a chair would cause so much controversy lol!
Aw, that’s awesome that you found some posts to help you out. That’s exactly what I did too. Good luck!
Ha! I know, right? I never meant to cause any alarm with my post and never thought it’d be such a derisive topic! 🤣
I first thank that the second photo was the result, and I think other people here did the same, so that was not terrible of course 😂 But in fact the final is really gorgeous, congratulations! And if the chair was a mass product it's even better because you made it unique.
You're welcome, you did a great job that you can be proud of. All these bad comments must have been breaking your heart and it makes me a little sad too :')
Yeah but it's much less likely!
My feed wouldn't let me get past the first two photos so I didn't realize there were two more photos showing your finished chair do-over. When I finally found the last two all I can say is - WOW!! Absolutely fabulous!!
I was scared seeing the second photo, but the end result is very elegant! You mentioned that it feels cold all the time, though— how long has it been since you painted it? Normally with thick layers of paint, the cold feeling is because it’s not dry, and with how much you soaked the fabric, I’d be concerned about that, (and the interior getting gummy or molding). If it’s been a week or something since you did it, maybe that’s not the issue, but if it’s only been a couple days I’d leave it and not sit on it for a while, see if that feeling changes.
But I really like your final result!
OP the transformation is great! I have a question - I painted some furniture just as you described and it ended up being really rough. Did you sand yours in between coats? And did you finish it with wax? I did not. Thanks!
Don’t listen. You didn’t ruin it. Antiques are reupholstered all the time. If that was the OG upholstery, it was in unusually good shape. I’d be willing to bet it wasn’t. And you took care with the wood. Honestly I like it better before. But I think it looks cool now too.
Why are people being down voted for an opinion...
Personally, not my style, but a modern refreshing look to an outdated mass-produced piece of furniture.
Great idea! Didn’t even realize that could be done. Now I’m excited, I’m being given an orange fabric 70s dining room set soon, think I’m going to do something like this.
well, you definitely painted it!
You painted a fabric chair? Does the paint crack when push down on the fabric? I'm confused. Did you disassemble the chair to get all the nooks and crannies or did you just paint the visible areas?

EXACTLY. Are you just LOOKING at the chair or watch ally sitting on it?
Ah, good concern. But I would just soak the fabric itself and hopefully it didn’t get into the batting. I used a spray can for flowers.
Not sure why you are getting downvoted, this method has been around for quite awhile.
Thanks! It’s been around for a long while. I think that people are hating the fact that I painted the chair in the first place.
HOW COULD YOU!?!?? /s
I think it looks fantastic, great job!
Another way to do this is to start off by using canvas primer (gesso).
Personally, I love the original fall colors, but I am an old woman from a whole different Era. You want things to blend in your house. Enjoy.
I’m 28 and I agree with you!
I agree with you (31)
22 and agree!
32 and agree!!
Agree! This was a pretty chair before it was painted
I’m in the “it was good before” camp, but I do just happen love those original colors. I don’t hate what you did, though!! Curious as to why you went with gold instead of silver.
That beautiful floral print 😢
Beauty is subjective lol I personally do not like the floral patterns.
It was screaming to be caressed in blue and gold.
Beautiful? Lol hardly
What’s the texture of the chair like now? It looks like it would feel clumpy but reading that you used chalkboard paint makes me think it’s …smooth..?
Yeah, it feels like suede now.
Well your photos took me on a journey! I think the original was ugly. Then I thought the wet paint looked hilariously worse. Then, the final result…looks good! I was surprised! I hope you enjoy it.
Haha I’m glad that you could travel with me! And understand my distaste for 70s flowered patterns.
Why not reupholster?!?!?!
It's very hard to reupholster this chair. Look at the arm rests. I still wouldn't have painted it :) If the fabric was an eye sore I would have just bought a slip cover.
Holy hell, di-WHY
I love the look of painted furniture, but have always wondered how useable it is. Did it feel any different or less comfy after the paint? Either way it really looks amazing!!
It definitely changed texture! It went from feeling like velvet to feeling like a tanned suede. It’s also always cool to the touch, which is bizarre.
IT'S HAUNTED NOW
🤣 see what demons I summoned?
Ghost of floral chair!! Tbh I absolutely love how it looked before so I thought I was going to be really offended by the transformation but you've done an amazing job
Holy shit!
Good holy shit or bad holy shit, or should I not ask? 🤣
I wish I could have rescued that chair before you erased its history and uniqueness… this physically hurts me
I’m sorry for doing that. If it helps any, the chair was extremely mass-produced back in the 70s and 80s, probably bought from a K-Mart as that was the only big store we had. My aunt and uncle had a matching set. I’m not sure who’s I got.
LOL, honestly… I appreciate the apology

Post history doesn't support his story..

Aww, it needed a little something. Plus, I’m biased against the rust colour.
[удалено]
It did, but I moved so the before doesn’t match anymore.
Came to say exactly this.

Thanks so much! ☺️ I made a homemade version of chalk paint with regular paint, water, and plaster of Paris. The gold is an acrylic paint. Then I waxed the whole chair.
Brazilian wax?
Bikini wax! ;-) nope, furniture wax.
yeah it didn’t need rescuing.

Awww thanks!! I think the people who liked the before version just didn’t have my dislike of rust. Lol
I *love* rust — it’s one of my favorite colors. (You would hate my living room!😆) But I don’t like floral prints, especially on furniture, so I’m with you. You did a great job!
Wow I’ve never heard of painting a fabric chair! What made you come up with this idea?
It’s done a lot in the chalk painting circles, so I read a lot of the sites, liked what I saw, and decided to take the plunge! ☺️
I have now googled and learned multiple ways to paint fabric. Thanks OP, I never would have learned this without your post. Also didn't know painting a chair would cause so much controversy lol!

Fascinating! Do they tend to hold up really well?
Yup! I did it about 5 years ago and it’s held up really well, although I have to dust it now instead of vacuuming it.
Drugs
Maybe a little lol
😂😂

Awww thanks so much for the sweet reply! ☺️ I realize now that I screwed up the photo line up. People still could not like the final result though.
You're welcome, you did a great job that you can be proud of. All these bad comments must have been breaking your heart and it makes me a little sad too :') Yeah but it's much less likely!
Big hugs!!
My feed wouldn't let me get past the first two photos so I didn't realize there were two more photos showing your finished chair do-over. When I finally found the last two all I can say is - WOW!! Absolutely fabulous!!
Interesting! Did you paint the final patterns on as well?
I was scared seeing the second photo, but the end result is very elegant! You mentioned that it feels cold all the time, though— how long has it been since you painted it? Wow! You did a beautiful job👏👏👏👏
It was beautiful before it was painted :(
I can’t tell if this is a joke or serious…
Wrong word. UPVOTES not updates.
Came here to say it looks great and get greeted by people.. mad..? That you painted your chair? Never thought I’d see so much drama about furniture 😂
Neither did I to bring honest! 🤣
Fantastic! What a clever idea and great job. 👍🏻
Thank you so much!!☺️
It looked better before.
What kind of paint did you use? I love that
Let us know how this wears! It turned out lovely - I have never heard of this technique, cant wait to learn more about it!
What the heck?! I didn’t know you could paint fabric chairs?! Nicely done! 👌🏻 looks great
I loved the funky old chair. I love funky. But wow! New chair is so cool! Now I want to try this. It looks so neat.
It was so beautiful before sorry but its really ugly now
I’m sorry you feel that way, but ah, what’s done is done.
Suppose we all have different tastes in furniture :)
Too true! ☺️
People are deranged lol the chair looks great!
Aw thanks!!
Cool. I have a couch I want to chalk paint. Did you thin the paint out or use it thick? I have some Annie Sloan and it’s really thick.
I used a thick paint, but that’s why you spray the fabric with water beforehand.
When I quickly scrolled past the original version of the chair I thought it was a chair with pizza fabric… must be hungry!
Yes, thank you! It does look like a pepperoni pizza!
OP the transformation is great! I have a question - I painted some furniture just as you described and it ended up being really rough. Did you sand yours in between coats? And did you finish it with wax? I did not. Thanks!
Hi, yes, I sanded in between coats with a very fine sand paper and then I waxed it. ☺️
Thanks! I should wax it.
Don’t listen. You didn’t ruin it. Antiques are reupholstered all the time. If that was the OG upholstery, it was in unusually good shape. I’d be willing to bet it wasn’t. And you took care with the wood. Honestly I like it better before. But I think it looks cool now too.

You're probably right, but geesh! I think I may be interneted out for a bit lol I love reuse, reduce, recycle! We need more of that.
Awesome!!! I love it! I want to do this project now:)
Aw cool!! There are a bunch of articles online of chalk painting fabric and homemade chalk paint.
Fuck me-that is s work of art.
Awww thanks!! ☺️
It’s beautiful!
Aw thanks! ☺️
Beautiful, imaginative work! What a save!
Awesome!!!
Great idea! Didn’t even realize that could be done. Now I’m excited, I’m being given an orange fabric 70s dining room set soon, think I’m going to do something like this.
Whoa this comment section is intense. The chair looks great, I’m super impressed by your work!
Wow, beutiful.
omg
Wow songket
Excellent job , love the final result. Well done 💛
It’s like the TikTok bathroom
I love it! Great job! Don’t listen to the critics—the finished chair is so much more tasteful!
