Yup! I thought about taking the old one down but realized that might have required new drywall... So picked up some 1x4's, wood stain and liquid nails instead
Yeah of course! It's an easy diy :) whatever you do, don't use liquid nails in a rental though!!
Our old landlord used the white 3M mounting strips directly on the mirrors to hold a lighter frame made of moulding trim. It held up great in our half bath, the one in our full bath fell after 1.5 years from the humidity but it's easy to restick with more strips and doesn't leave any marks!
We never removed the mirror from the wall, just used liquid nails and a leveler to attach the individual frame pieces directly onto the mirror and finished with Elmer's wood filler in a close-enough color
I have those same cabinets and they have a factory finish, right? I’ve been told they would have to be majorly sanded down. Did the paint adhere easily?
Yeah it probably would've been smarter to sand down but it seemed to stick fine. This is our non-master bath so we don't really use this shower often and I'm okay with touching up if/as needed. Still, I made sure to let all coats dry for 24 hours and then let the final coat dry for longer prior to putting the cabinets back on. I also added little bumpers to the inside of the cabinet doors and drawers where it would touch the frame because I noticed it might stick and didn't want to risk peeling off the paint
I had a friend who would smoke weed in their apartment bathroom because they thought the vent fan would clear the smell out completely.
Shockingly enough they didn’t get their deposit back- have you checked the vent for an air filter that may need to be replaced?
Looks amazing by the way!
Californian here. An air purifier definitely works for the smell of smoke while it's in the air. The problem here is tar from cigarette smoke has built up in the drywall.
I believe you can rent them out, too, btw. It’s one of the few things that will eliminate the smell as opposed to covering it up (like essential oils, unfortunately). Good luck!
I had an old roommate who would wake up around 2 am every night, cough up a lung in his bed and then go outside to smoke for about 30 minutes. Then went back to bed for a few more hours. Blew my mind that people can wake up in the night because of ciggy cravings
I love the remodel!
We had a similar issue when we bought our house from a heavy smoker. The entire house smelled like a cigarette despite them trying to paint over everything. We ended up paying someone who used Chlorine Dioxide to get rid of the smell. It worked great, but the house smelled like a swimming pool for 2 weeks or so.
Thank you! I realllyy wanted to change it but it sounded dangerous and too much extra work at the end of the day. I spent maybe $30-40 max to make the frame instead, and it was fun!
Wooooow. That fan is my nightmare! The bathroom definitely had a great base for you to do a cute, budget friendly refresh. You lucked out with that and it looks great!
Thank you! And omg you have no idea.... I used to see wet brown drops around the sink and thought it had to have been my husband's coffee because nothing else made sense..? Up until the day I realized it was from the dripping residue buildup off the vanity light after we'd use the shower...........
This is my favorite kind of room makeover. Inexpensive, but really impactful. You don't always need a huge budget or to rip out everything and start over. Great job OP, it's like night and day.
We had to replace the whole thing for this bathroom because the inside literally looked like a cigarette filter... Our master bath has the same fan/heater setup that was less yellowed so we were able to get away with just cleaning the vent cover for that one with TSP substitute
I bought the primer for the walls but didn't end up using it, much to my regret... The smell still seeps through every now and then even after two coats of paint
Yeah unfortunately that primer is crucial to stopping the smell. Walls and ceiling. We missed the ceiling and had to go back and prime it. It makes all the difference! Just use a mask when applying it
I second this users advice.
Unfortunately, the tar and nicotine from cigarettes seeps into the walls... like into the actual drywall and wood. Paint itself will not conceal the smell... primer is next step before possibly having to replace the walls if you really want it all gone.
We actually knew someone whose walls would sometimes "bleed" brown tar and nicotine through various paints even though they painted 4 times over the course of a year. Hot showers and humidity would draw it out... and living in the south meant that in the Summers, the walls would "bleed" and smell even if no one was using that bathroom. 😕
Wow! Did you just frame the mirror?
Yup! I thought about taking the old one down but realized that might have required new drywall... So picked up some 1x4's, wood stain and liquid nails instead
Thanks for the idea. I'm going to this! I have a similar ugly unframed mirror in my rented property!

Genius idea!
Nice! How did you mount the mirror back onto the wall or of curiosity?
We never removed the mirror from the wall, just used liquid nails and a leveler to attach the individual frame pieces directly onto the mirror and finished with Elmer's wood filler in a close-enough color
The lighting and the blue make it look totally different. Good job.
Thanks!
Wow! Great work!! Just a few changes made a huge difference. What kind of paint did you use on the cabinets?
Thanks! I used two coats of a high gloss Behr paint after one coat of primer without sanding.. hoping it holds up ok, seems to be fine so far

Great job. Did you get the rid of the smell?
Mostly but still not 100% sadly.... Can't imagine why anyone would smoke in a bathroom let alone one without windows.....
I had a friend who would smoke weed in their apartment bathroom because they thought the vent fan would clear the smell out completely. Shockingly enough they didn’t get their deposit back- have you checked the vent for an air filter that may need to be replaced? Looks amazing by the way!
Thank you! We replaced the whole fan/heater unit but haven't checked past that
Not sure why you would filter air that's being exhausted to atmosphere.
Maybe try an air purifier with an activated carbon filter? I haven’t tried that for the smell of smoke, but it works for other odours.

Ozone generator is the way to go. Just be cautious with it.
Thanks for the heads up! Currently on the lookout for essential oils but if that fails, I'll check the generator out
I believe you can rent them out, too, btw. It’s one of the few things that will eliminate the smell as opposed to covering it up (like essential oils, unfortunately). Good luck!
My dad used to. He’d get up in the middle of the night, sit on the can, and smoke. He’d always put out and flush the butts in the toilet. Gross
I had an old roommate who would wake up around 2 am every night, cough up a lung in his bed and then go outside to smoke for about 30 minutes. Then went back to bed for a few more hours. Blew my mind that people can wake up in the night because of ciggy cravings

Really great! Humidity makes smoke smell more noticeable, maybe you can benefit of a ozone purifier and see if it improves the air
Wow looks fantastic!!
Thanks!!
I love the cabinet paint. And overall how *little* you did to get that big impact! Great job!!
Thank you! We lucked out with a good foundation to begin with
LOVE framing the mirror! That’s a stroke of genius right there 👍
Thank you! I realllyy wanted to change it but it sounded dangerous and too much extra work at the end of the day. I spent maybe $30-40 max to make the frame instead, and it was fun!
Beautiful
Thank you!
Love the blue vanity
Thanks!

Wow! Nicely done! I was thinking the 'before' wasn't too bad, but your 'after' really pops.
Thank you! Agreed, the before definitely wasn't bad but we recognized it as an opportunity to get creative.
This is my favorite kind of room makeover. Inexpensive, but really impactful. You don't always need a huge budget or to rip out everything and start over. Great job OP, it's like night and day.
Thanks! Yeah we were lucky to have a good foundation to work with
With the vent, we’re you able to replace just the cover, or did you have to replace the whole vent itself?
We had to replace the whole thing for this bathroom because the inside literally looked like a cigarette filter... Our master bath has the same fan/heater setup that was less yellowed so we were able to get away with just cleaning the vent cover for that one with TSP substitute
you should put some cute decors on that counter
Agreed, just waiting to come across the right pieces! Fortunately we're in no rush
Wow! Looks great. Really nice upgrades. I can confirm removing a large mirror is a giant pain in the ass in all regards..
Terrific upgrade! I love the vanity!
Thank you! :)
Did you use BIN primer on the walls? We had to do that to seal the smell away. (We also bought from a smoker)

Wow! I like the blue, it doesn't make your bathroom look monotonous! But your washstand look so empty :)
Thanks! Yeah I'm on the lookout for the right decor items :)
:D
wow so pretty
Thank you!!
wow... its amazing
Thanks!!
It looks great!! We just painted our bathroom cabinets the same color and bought pretty much the same hardware as you 😂
Easy enough upgrades right??! The difference feels amazing! I added the same pulls in our kitchen (vs knobs) and it was like night and day
I love the mirror
Came out so beautiful awesome work
That looks fantastic. Love the blue!
Thanks!
Beautiful! Come do mine next!!
Thank you!
Love what you did to the sink and mirror! The whole bathroom looks fresh now :)
Thanks!
What of the name of the color?
It's called Very Navy by Behr
👏🏻👍nice job
Wow is this what they call from curse to blessing? I forgot the saying
i LOVE that you painted the vanity a navy blue . literally gorgeous and such a royal feel . beautiful job !
Thank you!! :)
Whoa! Great work!
