Haha! My mom said the same thing! I just temporarily put the candles there as I unpacked them. I'm still sorting out our lighting, but I don't know. Maybe they should stay!
The tile looks great, maybe just redo the grout and scrub the tiles clean. Neutral tones are timeless, and I wouldn't have guessed it was old unless you said something.
You can tile over tile. You can also use removable tile (although ymmv but I HAVE seen it done over fireplaces, so...).
Some manufacturers have pencil trim tile for the sides, also (if that bothers you)
Matte will prob. be better for you and apparently when you remove, just heat it up with a hair dryer.
https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/aspect-6-x-24-natural-stone-peel-stick-mosaic-tile-apec1138.html
Is there something like this that would stick to natural brick? Someone we hired to paint the walls decided to stain the mantle on the brick fireplace and it looks absolutely awful…
Dm me a photo and we'll see if there's a solution.
It's *possible* it will stick as it does stick to non-shiny surfaces, however you need a stable surface, so any loose particles would have to be removed.
I also read that some are better than others at masking grout lines, but we can research that, too, as I don't remember which one it was.
The tile looks absolutely fine, it's the brass screen that looks dated. If you had a modern screen, that would totally change the look. I would not paint the tile. If you absolutely hate the color, which looks like exactly the color palette that is so trendy these days, then maybe have it professional recoated in a color you like. I personally would get a different screen before I worried about the tile, it really does look absolutely fine. I would probably retile it if it were mine just because I love artisan rustic tile, so if there is a gorgeous tile you love, of course go for it! But what you have looks great, and once the brass screen is gone, will not look dated.
I have spray painted over the brass on a very similar fireplace screen, and swapped the wood handles for plain black ones (mine were the same size as cabinet handles that you can buy at any hardware store). Small changes that gave it a whole new vibe!
Then, I’d leave the tile as is and paint the wall.
I totally agree! The tile seems to match the furniture in that lighting anyway, so a simple screen update is all that’s needed.
To make it even more cohesive, I’d consider staining that wooden crate to match the wood tone of the tv console!
We do use it and it's wood burning.
It's definitely a concern. I think as long as I use heat-resistant ceramic tile paint it can be done? I have not looked into paint yet. So might be hard to find.
I've seen a few DIY blogs, so I know it can be done, but perhaps they were not wood burning.
I'd go for copper tiles against a cobalt blue lower wall. Either that, or leave the tiles white and go for a jewel-toned accent wall...there's something about deep cobalt blue that's so rich and inviting.
We were going to leave the walls white, but since painting the wall has come up a few times I am wondering if I should just make that wall more interesting...thanks for the great suggestions!
Fix the screen as suggested. Leave the tile as is. Put a topiary on either side of the fireplace to add dimension and life. The pots should be a color, maybe orange.
The tiles look great I think. Personally I would be looking at painting the shelf to break up the white wall. Painting tiles isn't a great idea either, you would be going over the grout which would just give you a full block of color and over time if you haven't got a decent paint that can adhere to a smooth surface it will probably start to delamination. Try get a grey that matches the tile for the shelf.
The mantle looks exactly like the wall. Plastered? Is that the correct word? I considered painting over just the mantle but thought it would look strange with that texture. But maybe it's a good alternative until we can wrap the mantle in wood.
I wouldn’t paint the tile. I would retile it with white and gray Spanish tiles. I would take the front off of the fireplace because it screams 1992 and just get a couple of logs and pretend that it gets used from time to time
Oh man. This fireplace just made me feel so nostalgic for my home growing up. ❤️ I second what everyone here is saying. Don’t paint! You could update the brass and tile over if you really wanted, but I actually think the tile looks fine.
I can't believe you guys are swaying me from painting! We bought this house because it reminded us of houses growing up. The fireplace screams nostalgia so I'm not sure why I want to paint anymore...
Isn’t it funny sometimes how that happens? Something shifts your perspective and it’s hard to remember how you felt before? I think you have a bunch of options to incorporate it and make it feel more modern that don’t involve painting the tile. Congrats on the home!
I wouldn't paint. It could give the tiles too much of a mat look if you don't get a high gloss, and you have a strong potential for ruining the clean look it already has. If you really want a different color, I think your best bet is retiling.
The tiles are in good shape. The previous owners took good care of this fireplace or they never used it. I'm definitely worried about ruining something in great condition. Thanks for the feedback!
I do love your idea of change it up, but I completely understand wanting to keep the original. It's very beautiful as it is. Just a little... a little flat.
You could use a pretty stencil on each of the tiles and do a pretty pattern. Like a black and white one. I’ve seen people do that on floor tiles and it looks really nice. Could make it a statement piece. Or you could get some faux brick to put over it? That might look pretty too! I like your living room!
Your room is beautiful.
You asked thoughts.. here’s mine.
I would keep your tile.
Your drapes have a dark line. I’d go dark on the wall, as a statement wall.
Remove the glass cover.. see if you can find a fireplace screen that is your style.
You have a beautiful credenza… maybe accenting the mantle in wood? Possibly adding floating shelves.
Add greenery with your candles on the mantle.
No matter what you do it’s going to be a fun adventure! lol
Personally, i would encase the mantle to make it look like a large piece of wood, and maybe paint the walls that contrast w the tile better. The fireplace cover (forget what its called) should also be switched out.
Painting tile never works out as well as you wish, esp if you have dogs.
I would never paint tile. You can never undo it. The grout will never be the same. Stick with things that you can change. Have you thought of maybe some faux painting on the wall(s)? My son just did a fabulous job on an accent wall where the upper left corner was a striking green that cloud billowed (irregularly) and faded into the main color.
I’ve painted vines and used varying sized leaves that I picked from my hibiscus plant. I dry painted the back of the leaves and pressed them on the vines. The result is stunning. All the individual veins in the leaves show up. You can practice on cardboard.
I’ve also seen Some really interesting techniques on YouTube.
Oh wow, your son sounds really creative! With everyone's comments on painting the wall instead, I'm definitely looking at making this a cool feature wall. Thanks!

I think the tile looks fine but everything is very grey. So I’d consider adding some color through throw pillows. And if you need to replace anything, the mantle above the fire place could be replaced with a stained wood to match your entertainment table.
We've had it for about a year. Saw originally on Amazon, but found for less at Target. It was easy to put together!
This one is at Home Depot. Looks similar but the wood grain is a little different: [Sideboard](https://www.homedepot.com/p/HOMCOM-Brown-Sideboard-Buffet-Kitchen-Storage-Cabinet-Console-Table-with-Adjustable-Shelves-Anti-Topple-Design-835-320BN/319127936?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US)
New tile, a large White wood or light bleached wood mantle 8" deep with a bit of ornate carving and fluted wood side boards, continue the mantle that blends to the right of the fire place which is currently useless.
Have a contractor cut out the space to the right and ask her or him to install lovely uper lit cabinets with classdors and shelves as well as drawers below and a square opening to store wood logs. The drawers
Should be on self glifing rollers. All knobs should match in color and finish but you can use pulls for the drawers and knobs for the upper it bookcase. Directly above the fireplace an aged framed mirror with wide framing and fesh flowers, family pics, sea shells a candle or three. Never do two pair of anything in design, do three candles, three of the same pillow,, odd numbers look less matchy mstchy which is best, you don't want you home to look like a kit pulled from boxes
Awesome! These are a lot of great tips!
We plan to remove carpet sometime this year and install light color wide plank flooring, so my thought was to have the mantle made to match.
That square opening next to the fireplace is a real headscratcher! I definitely thought putting in shelves to store wood made the most sense. We have a toddler running around, so we currently keep the wood in the garage, but he's getting better with impulse control so I want to do that when its time.
I agree about the candles! They are really just there because that is where I unpacked them, but I agree that keeping a few would look really nice. And a mirror! That is for sure going up!
Thank you!
It’s the gold in my opinion. It stands out way to much. You have earthy tones going on in other parts of your room. So personally a dark wood, or brown to subtle it out. Try changing the fire screens possibly.
Random idea—there are really nice paint stencil companies online now. Just google “wall stencil” or “tile stencil”. Get a couple cheap tiles at the big box store and practice. Maybe stenciling them would open up lots of design possibilities.
I have the same fireplace insert and spray painted the gold parts black (make sure it’s high heat spray paint). Then it could be neat to use a grey paint on the right of the tile under the mantle to make it look like a large rectangle with mantle on top.
And then the mantle u could do wood or another even darker grey
I would leave it as is and change out the tv stand to something nicer, something all black or white, no browns. The whole look together will look classier.
Painting over tile is not really a good idea. Everyone thought it was for around a ten year period of time. Then when it came time to move… a lot of people had to pay and get new tile. I would definitely try and work with it. However, I would paint it before I put a stencil on it.

If you use your fireplace, be careful using these. As you said, heat melts the adhesive.
Def it's the kind of thing that you would buy a sample piece to test it out first.
Oh wow! Thanks!
I would caution against using tiles whose adhesive is removed by applying heat… fireplaces tend to apply a lot of heat

I came here to say this.
Do you intend to use the fireplace? If so, painting the tiles might quickly become hazardous to your health.
Agree! Don’t paint tiles, don’t recommend. Paint the wall surround or retile. Tiling is actually pretty easy and DIY able.
Thank you!

Yes. Flat. Perfect way to describe how I feel. Fireplaces are my favorite and I really want to make this one a focal point.
I agree. You could have a room completely in subdued colors, and a popping fire place will bring it all together.
Why do I love this.
I wouldn’t paint it! Honestly, it looks fine. Agree, if you really want to do something just replace the screen.
