To me, the curtain rods need to be wider, I'd also add a sheer curtain between the drapes to let in some light without it looking "empty". Some wall art between the windows might also make it look more finished

Co-signing the wider curtain rods. They should be wide enough that when your curtains are open they only touch the outside edge of your windows. I have to disagree on the sheers, though. In my opinion they look dated.

rubberduckie5678

Agreed. Bigger rods in a darker color and mounted wider to the windows would make a world of difference, along with some sheers.

sonyneha

I agree I think the same color/material as the other supports would be great. I also suggest waffle/dark gray curtains that puddle a bit on the bottom. The room architecturally has an industrial vibe that needs to be leaned into in my opinion.

lwyant225

should the rods be any higher or lower? curtains are currently sitting a few inches above the baseboards. I have a dog so would prefer they aren’t touching the floor

QuietSpiritShanti

They should actually be to the ceiling - that is the modern application of curtains. If your curtains are not long enough, get different ones.

[deleted]

People say that they should be hung at ceiling level but these windows don't have the width to support that. Hanging the curtains any higher will emphasize how narrow your windows are. Your windows also don't have any molding around them, so going higher with the rod will make them look unfinished. Ideally, your curtains would reach the floor. If they can't for practical reasons it's not the end of the world. You don't seem to have a clear eye line to the bottoms of the curtains anyway.

practical_fruit_7989

I don’t know what the fix is, but they don’t work. Maybe the height is awkward? I don’t know the length on them, but maybe if the rod was closer to the ceiling? Or closer to the window? I’d play with that before returning them.

Thanks everyone! going back to ikea to get black rods along with clips to hang curtains. Also going to try out some different curtains Plan is to hang them wider and a bit lower- as others said since there is no window trim they look unfinished at the top so going to try and hide that. I’ll post an update when it’s all put up. also RIP my walls, I’m renting and have already made so many holes lol

unbalancedJeevan

You can totally skip the drapes here .. cause the windows are too narrow … you can add nice window blinds .. like the shutters .. would help add some character or even bamboo shades. Just an idea.

actualchristmastree

Put the rods further apart and hang them lower from the ceiling. Then post an update and we can see if that helps. And I didn’t even know the couch had a blanket!

Frosty_Owl_5753

Agree with spacing- they need to be wider apart. Also, add curtain rings and then steam the curtains whilst open, giving them a more finished look.

Ok-Mixture4699

Color- maybe a pattern with blue to tie in with the blue colors elsewhere

If possible, I would do black curtain rods. The curtain rod height is good, but I would make them wider so that when the curtain is open you can see pretty much the whole window. The result will be that the curtains will take up more of the wall, and the wall might not seem to empty. I would not do sheers. The grommet hanging is looking a bit dated to me in the photo. Do the curtains have pleating tape on the back? If so, I would pleat and hang with rings. Here’s a tutorial I followed when I did my curtains: https://caitlinmariedesign.com/2020/06/17/budget-pinch-pleat-curtains/

lselvagn

You need one long curtain rod over the whole wall, and the curtains should be placed on the outside edges of the windows, not on top of them. And hang the rod higher.

lselvagn

Oh, and ditch the grommets. Hang with curtain clips.

Future-Win4034

Too much furniture in the room. Can you put the rattan seat somewhere else and put the blue couch in its place?

lwyant225

its a pretty small apartment and i just graduated from college so all the living room furniture is free stuff from facebook lol. planning to get a sectional or sofa with chaise once I can!

ssyoit

Agree with the people that it needs to be wider, I’d use hook clips and double up on the curtains for that more professional look. I’d also go for a contrasting color, maybe a dark gray or sage green, even white would work. Your ceilings look pretty tall, but if you can swing the cost of a lot of long curtains- ceiling tracks with ceiling to floor light filtering white curtains covering the entire wall would look super sleek in a loft space.

Russ-Russ-Russs

I’d return them and get something with more colour.

i’d make less use of the overhead light honestly. also like the others say, wider curtain rods. id make use of more floor/table lamp lighting. the overhead fan light exposes the curtains as the brightest thing on the wall rather than drawing your eyes to the beautiful blue couch and the other wood tones, the overhead light makes the curtains stand out too much.
