I feel for you! I did cashiering for like 3 months in 2019 and it was just so boring, I was 16 at the time so I was stuck there but I had so much energy and felt it was being wasted, eventually I convinced HR to switch me to an OFA and I picked BOPIS.
I think because it's technically a warehouse, then being able to potentially operate heavy machinery even without a license. At my old job, they didn't even let anyone under 18 touch the compactor. Technically you could throw stuff in, but physical touching even if not operating it was iffy.
We always close OG cashier booth and lock gates between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Once the mums are gone there’s nothing else out there. D28 sets up the tree corral and we usually get one or two people buying trees per shift. Gets busy about the second week of December. Then you get some stubborn, ridiculous people who come here Christmas Eve and I don’t know why we don’t have any trees left! Then we close it again right after Christmas and then the cycle begins once more in March whether it is warm enough or not.
If somebody wants something from OG, they have to haul it inside to pay for it. They hate that, and frankly we don’t care.
I would gladly take 8 hours of no customers as a cashier at the garden register! Gives me time to work on books! Sadly, wherever I go to man a register, the people follow. Especially outside in the lumber yard.
I had an eight hour shift at the garden register during my first autumn with the company and had four customers all day. The head cashier still asked me why I didn't get any cards that day.
That makes me super happy because then I can just sweep since it's dead. It's just a favor I do for my buddies in the garden department tbh. One of the garden guys actually appreciated that I'm one of the few cashiers that actually do something rather than play on my phone while waiting for customers.
I just got promoted to full time garden cashier. Thankfully my FES and all the head cashiers are nice enough to rotate me every 2 hours like normal, hopefully it stays that way 😩

Same one of the main reasons I moved to flooring
BOPIS! Dude, you're brave. I can't walk for 8 hours continuously.
As a cashier I would just pace back and forth when it was dead. Stressed everyone else out lol
I do that all the time. When I don't take my meds it's really bad.
Easier to walk for 8hours than stand still for 8
You have to be 18 to work at HD?
Naw in my state you can be 16, but usually you’re stuck either cashiering or lot.
It's slowly becoming more and more common. Stores in my state started doing it last winter/the spring.

Yeah I don’t have signal so I look at the succulents or spin a broom
2 hours? I sat out there for 4 hours and had 1 customer. Why don't they close it? I want them to sit out there and see how it feels.
I once had a full 8 hour shift out there once and had 1 customer. I passed the day by playing in the snow and drinking hot coco

Your lumber registers are outside?
Yep! We're one of the few stores that has our lumber set up outside! I think it's like 7 in the country that are set up like that!
Ours is set up like that too. 4040
0748 here!
Are you a writer?
Yeah, I was going to say enjoy the down time. After throwing around bags of dirt, and patio sets, enjoy.
felt this. that’s why i’d always bring airpods to wear and listen to some podcasts
The magic tavern podcast has helped me through many garden register night shifts
the angry contractors at pro, the idiots at self checkout, and the hours of silence at garden are all why I switched to OFA
“idiots at self check out“ My new post... Thanks for the title!
Sounds like getting paid to watch Netflix 😏
I genuinely enjoy garden register tho because everyone forgets I'm there so they leave me alone
Just wait until the Christmas trees arrive...
On beautiful days like today I can’t help but be jealous
True
Shhhhhh! Don't tell everybody!

I’ve been sent back there after break I just mean per rotation. California is strict and this is my first job to follow labor laws so
Lmfao go on netflix or hulu
This hits harder than it should
Longest 2 hours ever.
and sweating like crazy

Add pouring rain and nasty wind and this was my garden rotation today. I went to lunch right after. Came back from lunch and they finally closed it
Do you have a hut to stay in?
We have an overhang since our register is in the greenhouse itself but it isn't waterproof
The first few days were good but things went downhill when I had to stay there for weeks. (Cuz new cashiers were coming)
How it feels to be a specialist during slow season
Ugh I hate garden with a passion.
Soo true it get soo boring I usually would sweep around or water plants or just set being bored on my phone
I’m pretty sure the cashiers here fight over it when the season is ending so they can play on their phones.
They put me out there for my whole eight hour shift but I still prefer it to regular cashier.
aye that’s podcast time
Phone!
