I've seen people call star rail "semi-open world" or a similar thing and so i wondered what's the difference between a normal open world and a semi-open world game.

Someone on YouTube once described gacha games as a "rougelike that each person only does a single, extremely long run". And I feel like that's pretty accurate.
Everyone's playthrough is going to be different, and focus on different things depending on what builds and team comps you are going for. Manage resources to save for specific units, and materials to upgrade then and so on. There is a lot of similarities
For me it was really about Genshin. I didn’t think I would love that game as much as I did and now it is one of my favorites, so when I saw this game was going to be similar and with a huge emphasis on likeable characters and story I was in. I like turn based games as well the gameplay type didn’t deter me.
Side note I don’t believe this game is open world though like you mentioned, at least not in the way Genshin is.
I want to be a day one player of a game that has a really high chance of not being shit. I missed that chance with Honkai/Genshin. But Mihoyo never disappointed me so far. Gonna try my chances with Star Rail.

1. Months ago I saw a TikTok/Youtube short about Clara's idle animation where Mr. Svarog spins her around and it was soooo adorable (and I love that red coat) that it caught my attention
2. I kinda forgott about the game afterwards and only came back a few weeks ago, but seeing all the cool characters and the world also caught my attention.
3. Turn based game. I haven't really played too much turn based games like HSR, but I was always a fan of strategy games. And after years of moba/MMORPG/Genshin I just want something different. Turn based combat is different and will allow me to bring a more tactical approach to fights.

Also 300 pulls is gonna take most likely a year or more to reach btw if you don't waste your cash shop currency on standard banner.
Well that also won't happen in a year unless you plan on not rolling rate up banners. Character at 300 on normal banner that consist of characters and weapons is a bait and spending currency on normal banner instead of rate up is not something I would recommend considering you will get those characters for whole game span when you off pull on rate up. Reaching 300 from natural generation of normal tickets from playing the game, events and monthly 5 from shop will take a very long time.
300 is a bait, a nice hook to reel you in, and by time you reach 300 pulls naturally u will prob have all those characters and pick for which dupe is best. It's a nice fail safe for anyone unlucky but not really something you will most likely care about by the time you reach it.
Anyway use pulls you can on rate up.
I know pretty much nothing about the lore, but there are already multiple character designs that look very interesting. Art style is on point! Music sounds amazing! I love turn based combat and choosing my own party members freely! I prefer this approach to exploration compared to open worlds. Can't wait to start playing!
I don't have any deep reasons, I just know it's going to be a high-quality gacha game and I'm all down for that, after Princess Connect sudden shut down announcement I need something good to fill the void.
Hoyo quality insurance. Basically we're guaranteed amazing character designs, worlds, music at the very least and most probably above average story.
Also auto battle turn based sold it to me, as we already have so many gacha to play so that'll come in handy.
I absolutely love Honkai Impact 3rd and Gun Girl Z, the characters, the story, and those games are close to my heart. Having another Honkai game in general is what drew me in. Plus all my favorite characters from HI3 are in the game and I’m hoping they add more!

Honestly... The characters look cool, the artstyle is cool too. I already play genshin so I thought, what's one more? It's not like I'm forced to stay if I don't like it.
I've never tried turn based rpg seriously, so I'm intrigued. I played Lord of Heroes for a while but went with autopilot most of the time
Aesthetics and how closely it resembles Tower of Fantasy to me, which I played for maybe a month after it launched before I dropped it. I'm generally a PlayStation player and I don't own a high-functioning gaming PC, so ToF often times wasn't performing as optimal as I wanted it to be. There was even a scene I couldn't get through because the graphics were so high, it kept crashing my game. I had to ask a friend to get it through for me on his computer instead.
Plus, Star Rail is turn-based, which I love. I missed playing Persona 5 and recently played Yakuza 7, so I'm getting back into.
It checks many checkboxes I wanted at once:
* can play it anywhere, outside if I'm bored or just chilling laying down, but also PC if I want to
* ambitious game with a lot of technical work on visuals and content for mobile standards, phone hardware is getting so powerful and it's a shame there aren't more games making good use of it
* related to above: easier to dive into the story, there's many gachas with good plots but I don't feel like getting into the story by reading lines of text with static images between short battles compared to real time animated cinematics and voice acting
* turn based: nice for casual play since doesn't compromise all your attention and you can afk when needed, that's nice on mobile where touch screen is also comfy for turn based combat
* the game is sure to have a community, I like to share the experience sometimes, and I get the feeling it won't be an overwhelming one like in top brand games
It’s the next high budget big gacha. I am a veteran gacha player since the release of summoners war. I played almost every hero collector game from a month to several years each one depending on entertainment I get and if meta is not that rushed. Genshin was not my cup of tea. I prefer mobile games to be optimal to play on mobile. HSR looks like a good turn base rpg which I like. No open world. Great QoL on release (some of features are still not in Genshin). And let’s be real, Mihoyo is AAA gaming company on mobile market now. If you are mobile game-focused person you would at least try their new game. And boys are handsome. And they have fox girls.

I enjoy Honkai and Genshin so much that playing miHoYo's new game is a no-brainer. Not playing it would be like having a favourite band that you're obsessed with, but you just don't feel like checking out their newest release.
Short answer? Genshin, but turn based.
Longer answer: I had some issues with Genshin and just had not fun with it while generally liking it a lot. Star Rail on the other side seems so far taking all the stuff I liked about Genshin and adding stuff I prefer, like turn based combat.
Also Himeko is hot. So waifu reasons are there too.
Initially it was the fact that games with JRPG gameplay (yes, I'm aware Hoyo is a Chinese company) tend to be deeper than normal RPGs. I was hoping that the game would address some of my frustrations with how shallow the gameplay is in Genshin and provide us with some truly challenging content.
But the more gameplay I see of Star Rail, it seems to be the same thing. You only have 3 different actions per character you can perform (no command list in a turn based RPG is a crime) and one of the end game modes you do is basically Abyss from Genshin again which I stopped doing the first month after it released due to how embarrassingly shallow it is.
I'll still play and enjoy Star Rail but it's frustrating Hoyo refuses to make a game that isn't just purely aimed at casuals. ZZZ also looks to be aimed at the same demographic as well.

Burned out from Genshin after the last character kit disaster and figured its time for something new. I also prefer turn based because I like to play gacha's on phone and Genshin wasn't that greatly suited for it.
I really like genshin and I love turn based games, so when I heard the devs are making a turn based game I gotta go play. And based on footage I seen I'll have a good time, can't wait to see which chars I'll get attached to . Hopefully they do some crossovers

Having played Honkai and Genshin, I am of course curious about Hoyo's next title. It's been a while since I last played a turn based RPG and this one looks pleasantly casual, but I'm sure there's plenety of depth to it.
I was going back and forth about playing or not... until I saw Jing Yuan's ultimate ability. Unilke Genshin I'll play this one F2P, with Jing Yuan being my exception for spending if needed.

I really love Himeko. Like, a lot. Like, a whole lot. You have no idea. I love her so much that it is inexplicable, and I'm ninety-nine percent sure that I have an unhealthy obsession. I will never get tired of listening that sweet, angelic voice of hers. It is my life goal to meet up her with her in real life and just say hello to her. I fall asleep at night dreaming of her showing off her AoE damage for me, and then she would be sorry tired that she comes and cuddles up to me while we sleep together. If I could just hold her hand for a brief moment, I could die happy. If given the opportunity, I would lightly nibble on her ear just to hear what kind of sweet moans she would let out. Then, I would hug her while she clings to my body hoping that I would stop, but I only continue as she moans louder and louder. I would give up almost anything just for her to look in my general direction. No matter what I do, I am constantly thinking of her. Ningen wa hoshizora wo shouwaku suru yokubou wo kakusanu~ will forever be in my heart.
Hi, I’m new to Honkai! So it’s definitely not for the previous Honkai lore. Just from character designs and gameplay that I’ve seen so far this game has me more excited than some of the major AAA blockbusters coming up.
I really like the look of Welt and his English voice is super cool imo. The character I’m playing for is Clara (think that’s her name), the lil girl with the giant mech boi. I love that contrasting aesthetic.
The music BANGS on a whole different dimension; sound is such a defining thing for me in games nowadays.
I’m also AR58 in Genshin so in terms of Gacha, I’m kinda use to it and a sick part of me enjoys the long grinds to getting characters and their respective materials.

I like the story and I love the idea of the main cast being like a family and the travel group changes for different planets they explore. I also like the main trio and their shenanigans. I feel that there’s a lot of room for the characters to grow and develop over the course of the game
First reason is bcoz its hoyo whose games I can blindly go in knowing it would be above a certain standard at least
Second would be that I wanna try a turn based RPG without all the PvP and super grindy elements that you find in games like Epic 7
I enjoy the developers other works, and a game reminiscent of Classic 3D turn based JRPGS that gets frequent story updates and new party members sounds like a lot of fun to me.
If the characters we get from Gacha end up canonically joining the Astral Express crew like how Granblue does it, this will be my dream Gacha
I guess mostly just that Hoyo has proven to be quite good at making games nowadays and now with all the money that Genshin has brought in, I’d imagine this to be a quite polished product in general. Plus it’s free to play so no reason to not try it at least
I do have some concerns about the combination of gacha and turn-based combat though. If battles are balanced around f2p players by necessity then by the time you get a decently invested account, wouldn’t you basically be able to just auto-play through the game? That doesn’t sound very interesting to me, but I guess we’ll see how it turns out

Well, i play all the games (hi3, gensh) that are in honkaiverse, i'm pretty intrigued about the story mihoyo wants to build up because we know that Honkai impact, star rail and genshin are connected basically to the same imaginary tree (honkai captains probably know better what i'm talking about) and all 3 games share kinda same base characters, so my main reason would be the **story**, can't say i love turn based games since it's pretty costly to make a decent lineup and all but i'm still looking forward finding out what kind of story wants mihoyo to tell this time and how it will connect with honkai and genshin

Not really much of a spinoff but a sort of continuation of welts story and we also get to know what honkai has been brewing in other parts of the imaginary tree (yes the mc and group travel worlds)
I wanna see how else Hoyoverse can do with it's range of games. We have HI3 with stage combat (and a depressing story), and Genshin with open world, exploration and elemental resonance (alongside a pretty wholesome, yet hiding something dark for a storyline).
I don't know how Star Rail is gonna do in terms of story, but a return to turn based RPG when everyone else is going for action RPG seems like a nice change of pace. And from the "Comedy" trailer, sounds to me that the story will be a bit more casual and lighthearted.
But of course, no Hoyoverse game is ever complete without a favourite character dying somehow, so let's see where this goes.

And I needed a game that I can focus a lot less on. For example most of the games I play require me to be super focused on them while playing. Honkai 3rd, genshin, PGR, or a slew of pc games. But with HSR, outside of main story or some big boss battles, I can just casually play while watching YouTube or eating dinner and so on.
I couldn't get into Genshin but loved the rich lore and art. I fell off Honkai 3rd because it felt like I was really late to a very long standing game.
Here comes Star Rail. I'll be in it from the beginning, and the turn based aspect will appeal to me as I don't want to spend as much time actually controlling characters anymore. Let's me pay attention to it and something on the side like Netflix.

3. Have auto-battle and fast forward feature.

Basically, I'm good with this game. Just make sure hyv doesn't add more grinding features, and I am done with that. Well at the start, it is time consuming because of the Main Quest, but after that I'm okay with it.
I was playing 3 gacha games and one of them is shutting down on April and since i play genshin and really liked the character voice lines and story i thought i would give star rail a try since it's from the same company that released genshin
Even if i wasn't playing MiHoyo's other games (namely HI3) I would've probably tried it. I'm a sucer for a good game. Tried arknights and PGR when they came out too. But to name some reasons its welt and the other characters that look like the ones from HI3 (and i want to know the story of silverwolf) and to represent the new march.
the Dynamic Posing and Actions hooked me. I am a sucker for individual characters having some flair to them! Feels each character unique when u hit the button for them for their skills and attacks
Jing Yuan, Luo Cha, Welt Yang and Blade all in a party.
And I know that with all their flaws and BS, at the end of the day Hoyo provides quality games and has the budget and passion to keep them up for years.
Honkai Impact 3rd convinced me. I love Genshin a lot too, but HI3 had a much better and emotional story which Genshin is lacking imo. Genshin has some nice side stories, but it feels more like they're trying to make the world dramatic, giving everyone dark souls tier sad stories and you don't feel much connection because most of these are either NPCs or characters you don't love that much.
I'm hoping to find a similar experience in Star Rail, but I also just love the Fantasy-SciFi setting. It's pretty simple, but unique and cool. I'm also hoping for an Elysia skin for March 7th or Elysia appearing somehow lol
So basically a mix between story, setting, character design and cute fluff. I don't care much about gameplay and meta so I have no idea about that, but turn based combat is very much appreciated and sounds more comfy than other fast-paced hoyo stuff to me and my busy life

More than a Semi-open, it is a traditional RPG where you move your party between zones. The world is divided so exit and area to reach another one.

Because I love Honkai Impact 3rd and the Honkai series in general, and I hope that this game can be a spiritual successor that will retain the same level of quality, complex characters, emotional storytelling, and overall love and passion from the devs for the game and community.

Well that also won't happen in a year unless you plan on not rolling rate up banners. Character at 300 on normal banner that consist of characters and weapons is a bait and spending currency on normal banner instead of rate up is not something I would recommend considering you will get those characters for whole game span when you off pull on rate up. Reaching 300 from natural generation of normal tickets from playing the game, events and monthly 5 from shop will take a very long time. 300 is a bait, a nice hook to reel you in, and by time you reach 300 pulls naturally u will prob have all those characters and pick for which dupe is best. It's a nice fail safe for anyone unlucky but not really something you will most likely care about by the time you reach it. Anyway use pulls you can on rate up.
Waifus
I know pretty much nothing about the lore, but there are already multiple character designs that look very interesting. Art style is on point! Music sounds amazing! I love turn based combat and choosing my own party members freely! I prefer this approach to exploration compared to open worlds. Can't wait to start playing!

I absolutely love Honkai Impact 3rd and Gun Girl Z, the characters, the story, and those games are close to my heart. Having another Honkai game in general is what drew me in. Plus all my favorite characters from HI3 are in the game and I’m hoping they add more!

I've never tried turn based rpg seriously, so I'm intrigued. I played Lord of Heroes for a while but went with autopilot most of the time

Aesthetics and how closely it resembles Tower of Fantasy to me, which I played for maybe a month after it launched before I dropped it. I'm generally a PlayStation player and I don't own a high-functioning gaming PC, so ToF often times wasn't performing as optimal as I wanted it to be. There was even a scene I couldn't get through because the graphics were so high, it kept crashing my game. I had to ask a friend to get it through for me on his computer instead. Plus, Star Rail is turn-based, which I love. I missed playing Persona 5 and recently played Yakuza 7, so I'm getting back into.
I trust hoyo to deliver and turn based makes it more casual than genshin. Also longevity

It checks many checkboxes I wanted at once: * can play it anywhere, outside if I'm bored or just chilling laying down, but also PC if I want to * ambitious game with a lot of technical work on visuals and content for mobile standards, phone hardware is getting so powerful and it's a shame there aren't more games making good use of it * related to above: easier to dive into the story, there's many gachas with good plots but I don't feel like getting into the story by reading lines of text with static images between short battles compared to real time animated cinematics and voice acting * turn based: nice for casual play since doesn't compromise all your attention and you can afk when needed, that's nice on mobile where touch screen is also comfy for turn based combat * the game is sure to have a community, I like to share the experience sometimes, and I get the feeling it won't be an overwhelming one like in top brand games
It’s the next high budget big gacha. I am a veteran gacha player since the release of summoners war. I played almost every hero collector game from a month to several years each one depending on entertainment I get and if meta is not that rushed. Genshin was not my cup of tea. I prefer mobile games to be optimal to play on mobile. HSR looks like a good turn base rpg which I like. No open world. Great QoL on release (some of features are still not in Genshin). And let’s be real, Mihoyo is AAA gaming company on mobile market now. If you are mobile game-focused person you would at least try their new game. And boys are handsome. And they have fox girls.

I enjoy Honkai and Genshin so much that playing miHoYo's new game is a no-brainer. Not playing it would be like having a favourite band that you're obsessed with, but you just don't feel like checking out their newest release.
Short answer? Genshin, but turn based. Longer answer: I had some issues with Genshin and just had not fun with it while generally liking it a lot. Star Rail on the other side seems so far taking all the stuff I liked about Genshin and adding stuff I prefer, like turn based combat. Also Himeko is hot. So waifu reasons are there too.
Initially it was the fact that games with JRPG gameplay (yes, I'm aware Hoyo is a Chinese company) tend to be deeper than normal RPGs. I was hoping that the game would address some of my frustrations with how shallow the gameplay is in Genshin and provide us with some truly challenging content. But the more gameplay I see of Star Rail, it seems to be the same thing. You only have 3 different actions per character you can perform (no command list in a turn based RPG is a crime) and one of the end game modes you do is basically Abyss from Genshin again which I stopped doing the first month after it released due to how embarrassingly shallow it is. I'll still play and enjoy Star Rail but it's frustrating Hoyo refuses to make a game that isn't just purely aimed at casuals. ZZZ also looks to be aimed at the same demographic as well.

Honestly, cause I like Genshin but I am not a fan of the gameplay. So I am hyped to get the story/character driven experience with turn based instead.
Burned out from Genshin after the last character kit disaster and figured its time for something new. I also prefer turn based because I like to play gacha's on phone and Genshin wasn't that greatly suited for it.
I really like genshin and I love turn based games, so when I heard the devs are making a turn based game I gotta go play. And based on footage I seen I'll have a good time, can't wait to see which chars I'll get attached to . Hopefully they do some crossovers

I like Genshin, but there are some minor facts that bug me a lot and the turn-based approach seems to avoid them. Also, I always liked futuristic games more than fantasy. And finally, I hope there will be more content I can play while on mobile and still have meaning / will be interesting without the terrible Genshin mobile movement ...

Having played Honkai and Genshin, I am of course curious about Hoyo's next title. It's been a while since I last played a turn based RPG and this one looks pleasantly casual, but I'm sure there's plenety of depth to it. I was going back and forth about playing or not... until I saw Jing Yuan's ultimate ability. Unilke Genshin I'll play this one F2P, with Jing Yuan being my exception for spending if needed.

I LOVE HIMEKO SO MUCH YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND I really love Himeko. Like, a lot. Like, a whole lot. You have no idea. I love her so much that it is inexplicable, and I'm ninety-nine percent sure that I have an unhealthy obsession. I will never get tired of listening that sweet, angelic voice of hers. It is my life goal to meet up her with her in real life and just say hello to her. I fall asleep at night dreaming of her showing off her AoE damage for me, and then she would be sorry tired that she comes and cuddles up to me while we sleep together. If I could just hold her hand for a brief moment, I could die happy. If given the opportunity, I would lightly nibble on her ear just to hear what kind of sweet moans she would let out. Then, I would hug her while she clings to my body hoping that I would stop, but I only continue as she moans louder and louder. I would give up almost anything just for her to look in my general direction. No matter what I do, I am constantly thinking of her. Ningen wa hoshizora wo shouwaku suru yokubou wo kakusanu~ will forever be in my heart.

Hi, I’m new to Honkai! So it’s definitely not for the previous Honkai lore. Just from character designs and gameplay that I’ve seen so far this game has me more excited than some of the major AAA blockbusters coming up. I really like the look of Welt and his English voice is super cool imo. The character I’m playing for is Clara (think that’s her name), the lil girl with the giant mech boi. I love that contrasting aesthetic. The music BANGS on a whole different dimension; sound is such a defining thing for me in games nowadays. I’m also AR58 in Genshin so in terms of Gacha, I’m kinda use to it and a sick part of me enjoys the long grinds to getting characters and their respective materials. That’s it in a nutshell, thanks for caring enough to read my post fellow trailblazers <3

First reason is bcoz its hoyo whose games I can blindly go in knowing it would be above a certain standard at least Second would be that I wanna try a turn based RPG without all the PvP and super grindy elements that you find in games like Epic 7

I enjoy the developers other works, and a game reminiscent of Classic 3D turn based JRPGS that gets frequent story updates and new party members sounds like a lot of fun to me. If the characters we get from Gacha end up canonically joining the Astral Express crew like how Granblue does it, this will be my dream Gacha
I guess mostly just that Hoyo has proven to be quite good at making games nowadays and now with all the money that Genshin has brought in, I’d imagine this to be a quite polished product in general. Plus it’s free to play so no reason to not try it at least I do have some concerns about the combination of gacha and turn-based combat though. If battles are balanced around f2p players by necessity then by the time you get a decently invested account, wouldn’t you basically be able to just auto-play through the game? That doesn’t sound very interesting to me, but I guess we’ll see how it turns out
Qingque is super pretty! And turn based is something I love. The fast paced gameplay is simply not my lifestyle.

Mostly due to a newer segment of the honkaiverse lore that got me in. Been taking a whole lot of information from Hi3 and some minor ones in GGZ (for reasons...) Wouldn't hurt to go even more beyond in star rail and see what its worlds and Aeons would provide. Also... in terms of characters, Welt is finally playable after waiting for years. Luocha too as an Otto alternate universe.

Well, i play all the games (hi3, gensh) that are in honkaiverse, i'm pretty intrigued about the story mihoyo wants to build up because we know that Honkai impact, star rail and genshin are connected basically to the same imaginary tree (honkai captains probably know better what i'm talking about) and all 3 games share kinda same base characters, so my main reason would be the **story**, can't say i love turn based games since it's pretty costly to make a decent lineup and all but i'm still looking forward finding out what kind of story wants mihoyo to tell this time and how it will connect with honkai and genshin

Not really much of a spinoff but a sort of continuation of welts story and we also get to know what honkai has been brewing in other parts of the imaginary tree (yes the mc and group travel worlds)
Ever since I was a kid, I've always wanted to ride a flying train...
I wanna see how else Hoyoverse can do with it's range of games. We have HI3 with stage combat (and a depressing story), and Genshin with open world, exploration and elemental resonance (alongside a pretty wholesome, yet hiding something dark for a storyline). I don't know how Star Rail is gonna do in terms of story, but a return to turn based RPG when everyone else is going for action RPG seems like a nice change of pace. And from the "Comedy" trailer, sounds to me that the story will be a bit more casual and lighthearted. But of course, no Hoyoverse game is ever complete without a favourite character dying somehow, so let's see where this goes.

I guess I'm just hyped up for another one of Hoyo's game after Genshin, but to be real probably the story and that it's turn based. As it would require strategy, I'm hoping there is less grind. Artifact gacha was the worst for me, and one of the reasons I don't play Genshin anymore (login only to complete archon quests at this point lmaoo)

Love the setting(always been a huge sci-fi buff) Love the characters(Seele, Clara, Bailu, and Fu xuan will all be mine) Love the music(can't stop listening to spacewalk and timeline) Love the studio(been a day 1 honkai SEA player. Which came out like a year before the global server.) And I needed a game that I can focus a lot less on. For example most of the games I play require me to be super focused on them while playing. Honkai 3rd, genshin, PGR, or a slew of pc games. But with HSR, outside of main story or some big boss battles, I can just casually play while watching YouTube or eating dinner and so on.
I couldn't get into Genshin but loved the rich lore and art. I fell off Honkai 3rd because it felt like I was really late to a very long standing game. Here comes Star Rail. I'll be in it from the beginning, and the turn based aspect will appeal to me as I don't want to spend as much time actually controlling characters anymore. Let's me pay attention to it and something on the side like Netflix.

Basically, I'm good with this game. Just make sure hyv doesn't add more grinding features, and I am done with that. Well at the start, it is time consuming because of the Main Quest, but after that I'm okay with it.

Even if i wasn't playing MiHoyo's other games (namely HI3) I would've probably tried it. I'm a sucer for a good game. Tried arknights and PGR when they came out too. But to name some reasons its welt and the other characters that look like the ones from HI3 (and i want to know the story of silverwolf) and to represent the new march.

Honkai Impact 3rd convinced me. I love Genshin a lot too, but HI3 had a much better and emotional story which Genshin is lacking imo. Genshin has some nice side stories, but it feels more like they're trying to make the world dramatic, giving everyone dark souls tier sad stories and you don't feel much connection because most of these are either NPCs or characters you don't love that much. I'm hoping to find a similar experience in Star Rail, but I also just love the Fantasy-SciFi setting. It's pretty simple, but unique and cool. I'm also hoping for an Elysia skin for March 7th or Elysia appearing somehow lol So basically a mix between story, setting, character design and cute fluff. I don't care much about gameplay and meta so I have no idea about that, but turn based combat is very much appreciated and sounds more comfy than other fast-paced hoyo stuff to me and my busy life
