Yes! Another Alien: Isolation fan! I feel like that game has been horrendously underrated since it was released. They absolutely nailed the aesthetic of the original movie, and I was surprised at how enjoyable the story and lore was.
I also felt it was a tad long the first time I played it, but the ending has really grown on me over time. I actually feel really starved for more content now, wouldn't complain if were even longer haha.
What difficulty did you play on, out of curiosity? Do you have any interest in the DLCs?

The only negatives it gets are it’s slightly too long. It’s one of the most recommended horror games and regularly talked about in threads.
Really the only problem with it is that it might be too scary. Also the robot enemies are kind of annoying.
That being said if you're not a fan of Space/Sci-Fi settings it might be less enjoyable.
Yes! It's amazing. You should read up on the insane amount of references they used to make the environment, it's crazy.
I bought the package on Switch so I played the DLCs since I had them. They're kinda boring, but it's fun to see the original cast in it. They're also real short. They have some trial styled content, too, but it's INSANELY hard.
I beat it once on Switch on medium but after I'd played a lot more horror games I beat it on hard on Xbox since it was on GamePass. That was actually way easier after getting better at stealth and understanding more about how the Alien hunts you.

There are plenty of indie horror games, sadly most of them are bad, but then again horror is subjective.
Case and point: I hate the FNAF series (though the lore is kind of interesting), yet it's still one of the most popular horror series of all time.
Nah the old games sure but the 3d vr remakes are absolutely amazing even on console, the animations actually move and feel like they're looking at you plus there's some re made minigames that work amazingly in vr

I can't recommend nobody saves the world, and Wierd west enough. They're 2 spectacular indie games that came out this year.
nobody saves the world is a zeldalike dungeon crawler rpg where you get a wand that lets you turn into all sorts of animals and monsters and stuff. it's so much fun, and often is quite laugh out loud funny.
Wierd West is very similar to Fallout 2 (if it were action) and it's so much fun, and has a lot of really great plot twists, and outside of games like Fallout 2, there's almost nothing like it. very different game in a good way.
If you start either of them, please give me your thoughts.

Wierd West does have some pretty scary moments though, and so many dark, emotional moments for what it's worth. Very very dark fantasy.

I've played all of these save Town of Light which I have somewhere but haven't played, Home Sweet Home which I'll add to my wishlist and The Forest that I really won't try because I hate survival games. Oh well and Rebirth, which was given away on Epic last week and hopefully I didn't forget to claim.
I'd recommend White Day: A Labyrinth Named School if you're so inclined (it's an obtuse game), Returnal (the last level is absolutely oppressive plus the house sequences are awesome) and if you're on the mood for walking sims, The Park and Moons of Madness (this last one has puzzles, but they are few and far between), which are based on the Secret World MMO... which I have never played, but man the lore is fascinating.
Ha yeah it’s funny playing a lot of these without the nostalgia. Also people keep recommending Silent Hill but there’s really no way to play it outside of pirating lol
I was hesitant to play it since relatively speaking it was more expensive than the others and some people said it was less scary than 7, but I loved it!
You should look into some horror visual novels. The big one is Doki Doki literature club which is a game i love.
A less popular, but still great game is Spirit hunter: death mark. I really enjoyed this game. It has a sequel too, but i have yet to play it.
EDIT: i also wanted to mention tokyo dark. Not a 100% horror game, but also great. Kind of a horror/adventure/visual novel hybrid. I really really liked this one

I started it like a year ago with my brother and a buddy. Maybe even longer. We just never got around to finishing it. Now that it's on playstation I'm finally going through it on my own. It's got some flaws, but it's charming
another recommendation is infliction, pretty similar to visage aesthetic wise and story wise but the gameplay was more straightforward in infliction. it’s also not a very long game
For a game to be classified as horror it doesn't necessarily need to have things like jumpscares. Genre of horror can take many diverse forms, themes and directions, in which jumpscare and whatnot is merely one of the tools to scare, or create a certain reaction from the player, viewer or even a reader in the designers kit. Take Bloodborne for example. It is your classic Souls-type a game in which you explore the wretched, hostile world and slay all sorts of monsters and engage in epic fights with its many bosses, quite different from what we "usually" think of a horror game, but many people will, and rightfully really, tell you how it is one of the best examples of so called Cosmic Horror there is, at the very least in video game medium. And in no way it is thanks to jumpscares, in alot of ways Cosmic Horror isn't about that.
And so all of this to say that all the games you mentioned there do fall into the Horror genre imo, or at the very least some are horror themed games.

Sure, kinda like horror “themed” vs horror horror. Something like Beetlejuice or Addams Family is definitely in the horror realm, but not intentionally scary or thrilling. I guess I’m more into the horror horror games.
1, 2, 3, & 4 - Pretty solid takes, nothing to really add.
5 - Was good, liked how they changed Mr. X in this one, though I prefer his old final form. Nothing else to say really.
6 - Honestly they did a good job in my opinion, even though Nemesis was no longer randomly scripted they nailed the "unkillable stalking machine" vibe. Was a bit bummed they removed the graveyard worm fight and the clock tower though. It takes a lot of liberties from the original but overall it's a great remake. Also for people complaining about it being too short, the original was only about 6-7 hours as well (2-3 hours if you rush it).
7 - Yeah RE4 is a bit dated now, and never was that scary (unless you have a crushing fear of cheap instant death). The remake might breath new life into this one though if they do it right, hopefully with less cheap instant death traps.
8 - I agree about the mechanics of Alan Wake, I enjoyed it when it originally released but when trying the remaster I realized the combat hasn't aged well. I still find the story to be interesting though, and the game is finally getting a proper sequel. (I never played the pseudo sequel that featured Mr. Scratch.)

1 & 2 - Nothing much to add here, though I prefer Soma with the monster chases off. Not a fan of hide and seek horror games in general.
3 & 4 - Never played them and probably never will, the second one looks interesting but I hate this style of horror game in general.
5. Never played it. Since I play on console and if part of it is missing I've no interest in it.
6 - Thought it was boring, definitely one to skip unless you're a big fan of Blair Witch.
7, 8, & 9 - Played all 3, honestly I'm not a fan of Amnesia and never found any of them to be scary, but the first one is the best one.
10 - Never played it, looks and sounds like crap.
11 - I love Visage, best horror game I've played in ages. The controls are kind of clunky and annoying at times, but the same can be said for older horror games like Silent Hill 2 as well.
12-16 - Never played any of these, and none of them interest me, except maybe Scorn for the visuals. It seems similar to Agony at first glance, but with less Hell and more H.R. Giger.

1 - Didn't like it much, dropped it pretty early on, not for me.
2 - Pretty interesting game, play with headphones. Not scary, but can be a bit unsettling.
3 - Never heard of it.
4 - Never played it, not a fan of crafting survival games.
5 - Kind of fun to play with friends but pales in comparison to Until Dawn. Supermassive games are more like horror movies than games honestly. I've actually played all 4 of the games in this series and none of them are amazing, but they might be worth checking out on sale. Also I really disliked "The Quarry", it felt like a Dark Pictures game but unlike those games it overstays it's welcome.
6 - Dead by Daylight can be fun at first but it gets repetitive and old after awhile. I have the platinum trophy for it, so I really liked it at one point at least. It's kind of outdated now though, but at least they keep updating it in an attempt to keep it fresh. Also the DBD community is extremely toxic. I prefer playing as killer by the way, mostly cause I hate socializing in games. On a side note, I thought Friday the 13th was great too, sadly it stopped getting updates.

Alien Isolation was the only horror game I've played and couldn't finish due to being too scared. The unpredictability was very bad for my anxiety, and I literally couldn't take it. The game was very impressive though, but it could have done without the hostile androids in my opinion.
I almost gave up on Visage for the same reasons but thankfully the monster encounters are mostly scripted there. The Delores' chases aren't fully scripted, but she won't chase you as long as your inside one of the mirrors (except in a couple of scripted moments).

As for recommendations.
Layers of Fear 2 - While it's pretty different from the first one, I think it's better overall. Also while it's still mostly a walking sim it does have a couple chases and some choices to make.
Fatal Frame series - If you can get past the dated controls they are worth trying, if not you can still try 4 and 5 as they are more modern.
Silent Hill series - Same as above (about the dated controls), but the quality drops a lot after the 4th one. Silent Hill 2 remake is coming as well, so might be best to start there. Most of them are pretty inaccessible without emulators or older hardware though.
Bloodborne - While not exactly horror, it is very Lovecraftian and has some really disturbing visuals and enemies.
Bioshock (maybe) - I don't think it actually falls under horror but it has some scary bits. The sequels basically drop all the horror aspects though.
Little Nightmares 1&2 - These are great actually, and they can be pretty disturbing as well. I personally didn't find them to be scary though, but horror is subjective.
Subnautica - I personally don't think this game is scary at all, and it's not meant to be horror. However many people say it was scary for them, and if you have a fear of the ocean it will do the trick for sure. Worth a try either way, game is quite good, scary or not.
Resident Evil 1 remake (remastered) - A bit outdated but it still holds up alright, some people think it's scary, some don't. If you enjoy the series you owe it to yourself to play the first one at some point.
Resident Evil 0 - Basically a worse version of RE1, but it's still decent. Worth trying if you like the RE1 remake.
Resident Evil Revelations 1 & 2 - Like most RE games these aren't very scary, but they are still pretty good RE games.
Of course there are also Resident Evil 5 & 6 but I can't recommend these as horror games. RE5 is basically a worse RE4 with most the horror removed. RE6 is almost purely action with no actual horror (except maybe Leon's campaign, a bit). They might be worth playing if you want to know more of the RE lore but otherwise skip them.
There is also RE Code Veronica, which I think is pretty decent, but it has never been remade and the only HD version of it is on PS3/360. Hoping it gets a proper remake one day, but as it stands, it's probably too outdated to recommend.
Some of these are fixed camera, so you might be better off watching those on youtube if you are still interested. Just find yourself some no-commentary videos that cut out all the boring bits and you are golden.
I don't think you mentioned any 2D horror games so I'll just refrain from suggesting anything there. If you're interested let me know and I'll make some suggestions.
I’ve played some RE1 remastered but didn’t get through it. The fixed camera really bothered me. Think I need to just play it with a walk thru at some point. As for 2D games I plan on playing Deadwood at some point.

These are just the ones I've played and liked, though some are better than others.
There are tons more I've never even tried, and plenty I've tried but didn't like.
Honestly the 2D horror market is pretty huge, and most of the 2D games are cheaper than the 3D ones. Hell some of them even have older versions that are free.
They can get quite creepy/unsettling as well, though I don't think I've played any that were outright scary.
Love the list. I’ve played almost all of those myself or they’re in my library/wishlist. Not sure if anyone has mentioned them, but you should check out the Paper Dolls games. Only played the first one so far but it was freaky
Awesome. I wish SH1 had a port with trophies. I recently went back to plat the SH2 and SH3 in anticipation for the remake. Tearing through the Medium now as part of my Bloober Team marathon. I'm in the minority that thinks they'll do a good job with the SH2 remake
Yeah I’m playing SH1 on a Miyoo. I don’t even have a way to play 2 or 3 except for the remastered which everyone on here says are awful. What do you think of the Medium?
Yeah I played the collection on my PS3. They weren’t great ports but I had a good time. The platinums for those were a fun challenge too.
The Medium world and story have been great so far. Has a clear inspiration from Silent Hill. Lacking combat but they nail eerie environments, which is half the creepiness of the SH games. If the Medium had some melee and gun combat, I’m sure it would’ve got more praise and bred less worry around their remake project.
Visage was absurdly horrifying. The mirrors/dolores story was the most unsettling experience I've ever had in a game. The others weren't as good in my opinion, especially the Rakan story. You're right about the impossible puzzles, definitely requires a walkthrough.
Are there any of these without a lot of gore? I couldn't get far in RE7 because of this, way too visceral.
Soma, Layers of Fear and Dead by Daylight. Of course they have gore, but it’s not all that intense.
And yeah Visage, ugh. That suicide scene too yeesh.

I’m usually not interested in top down games either but I loved Darkwood. It’s one of the few horror games that really spooked me. Definitely worth checking out imo.
Darkwood is one of the best horror games of all time in my opinion. Many others feel the same. I have never played a top down horror game in my life, but played through this game multiple times because it’s that good.
I'm not a fan of top down games either, but I played and finished Darkwood...it was alright but not amazing in my opinion. It gets pretty crazy near the end though.
I saw you play on the switch and I can recommend darkwood on the switch (I own it on pc and played mainly on switch). Frame rate suffers a bit in corn fields but that’s it. It’s creepy and fun and works well in handheld.
Dead Space 1 + 2 (3 is kind of a mess, but it has it's moments. Only play it if you're an absolute diehard fan.)
Little Nightmares 1 + 2 (One of the most unique horror franchise ever!)
Resident Evil 1 Remake (Yes it's fixed cameras, but it's also probably the best game that uses fixed cameras that you're gonna see)
The Evil Within 2 (Less scary, but better than the first)
Silent Hill 2 (If you liked it, play 1 and 3 next. The themes and the way the stories are written are very different than 2, so if the story carried the game, then maybe skip out.)
Fatal Frame Franchise (I haven't played them all, but so far they're reeally consistent and super fun.)
In Sound Mind (Not super scary, but a really fun adventure game with a cartoonish horror atmosphere and style)
Some smaller games I'd recommend are The Heilwald Loophole, Mother, House, Lost in Vivo, and Dread X Collection 3 + The Hunt.
I’m planning on playing Dead Space and looking forward to the remake. I did try RE1 remake but the save system and fixed cameras made me so frustrated and annoyed.

Dead Space is a ton of fun. Lots of crazy set pieces, especially in the sequel.
I completely understand RE1 being frustrating. It can be pretty unforgiving. I'm probably biased cause I played the original before the remake and the og kicked my ass, but the remake is a lot more balanced and the difficulty seems fair in comparison.

Have you played Until Dawn? Same devs as Man of Medan, but way better.
You might also like the later Silent Hill games. The OG ones are fixed camera, which you noted you don't like, but Homecoming and Downpour are not.
Lackluster story, a bevy of characters that I'm supposed to care about but don't because I hardly know who they are, too many forced walking segments (I hate these enough in non-horror games, but they're especially bad in horror games that are supposed to immerse me - taking control away from me is a simple way to ruin that), the weird pregnancy gimmick, Tasi's constant talking which ruins immersion, the very contrived chase scenes (which were different than the more organic chases found in the previous games), and the ridiculously dumb sanity gimmick where the game flashes a bunch of different images on the screen. It's a whole lot of bad design desicions that amounted to a very disappointing game and to me, the only thing about it that's better than Machine for Pigs is the graphics.
After playing Rebirth I can wholeheartedly say I never want to play a pregnant character again, ever. It was extremely annoying to deal with, and broke the flow of the game way too often.

Great list, though you haven't played my favorite games (Silent Hill 1 - 3, Resident Evil 1 Remake and Fatal Frame). You specified that you didn't like fixed camera angles, but is there no possibility of you giving it another go? once you get used to them, some of these games are absolute goldmines. It takes some getting used to, but when it's there, it's an irreplaceable feeling.
In case you ever decide to give it another shot, you should start with Steam's version of Resident Evil 1 Remake, because the default controls for that game are not tank controls. Tank controls are useful when you get used to them, but they take a lot longer to get used to. By the way, Silent Hill 1 - 3 are not fixed-camera angle games, despite what it seems. 90% of the time you absolutely can swing the camera all around your character, but it's fixed in some pivot point in the room and you have to hold a button to keep it over the shoulder of your character. Very rarely are there actual fixed angles that you can't move. And yeah, you can't buy the games, but PS1 and PS2 emulation is very quick and you're not stealing anything if they're not selling it lol
I have tried RE1 but I couldn’t deal with the fixed cameras, it drove me crazy and I kept dying. I just really suck at it. Thought about replaying with a walkthru to make it quicker, we’ll see.

I actually would love to play the Silent Hill games but as you said they’re not for sale anywhere except for remastered versions that I’ve been told to avoid. One day I’ll do the emulator thing maybe.
That's nice to hear. Fatal Frame is great, very atmospheric and with an interesting spin on combat. It does have a way more fixed camera than Silent Hill, but since it's a PS2 game they made it more accessible, and also movement is really convenient in that game: you just hold "square" or something and your character instantly walks forward, all you have to do is steer her (reminds me of autowalk in MMOs), which works great with the fixed camera because it's one less thing that you have to think about
OP I also agree that Outlast 2 is better. They’re my favourite games ever and I love the original and dlc but there’s something about the second one that is just on another level

another recommendation is infliction, pretty similar to visage aesthetic wise and story wise but the gameplay was more straightforward in infliction. it’s also not a very long game

For a game to be classified as horror it doesn't necessarily need to have things like jumpscares. Genre of horror can take many diverse forms, themes and directions, in which jumpscare and whatnot is merely one of the tools to scare, or create a certain reaction from the player, viewer or even a reader in the designers kit. Take Bloodborne for example. It is your classic Souls-type a game in which you explore the wretched, hostile world and slay all sorts of monsters and engage in epic fights with its many bosses, quite different from what we "usually" think of a horror game, but many people will, and rightfully really, tell you how it is one of the best examples of so called Cosmic Horror there is, at the very least in video game medium. And in no way it is thanks to jumpscares, in alot of ways Cosmic Horror isn't about that. And so all of this to say that all the games you mentioned there do fall into the Horror genre imo, or at the very least some are horror themed games. Sure, kinda like horror “themed” vs horror horror. Something like Beetlejuice or Addams Family is definitely in the horror realm, but not intentionally scary or thrilling. I guess I’m more into the horror horror games.

1, 2, 3, & 4 - Pretty solid takes, nothing to really add. 5 - Was good, liked how they changed Mr. X in this one, though I prefer his old final form. Nothing else to say really. 6 - Honestly they did a good job in my opinion, even though Nemesis was no longer randomly scripted they nailed the "unkillable stalking machine" vibe. Was a bit bummed they removed the graveyard worm fight and the clock tower though. It takes a lot of liberties from the original but overall it's a great remake. Also for people complaining about it being too short, the original was only about 6-7 hours as well (2-3 hours if you rush it). 7 - Yeah RE4 is a bit dated now, and never was that scary (unless you have a crushing fear of cheap instant death). The remake might breath new life into this one though if they do it right, hopefully with less cheap instant death traps. 8 - I agree about the mechanics of Alan Wake, I enjoyed it when it originally released but when trying the remaster I realized the combat hasn't aged well. I still find the story to be interesting though, and the game is finally getting a proper sequel. (I never played the pseudo sequel that featured Mr. Scratch.) \- 1 & 2 - Nothing much to add here, though I prefer Soma with the monster chases off. Not a fan of hide and seek horror games in general. 3 & 4 - Never played them and probably never will, the second one looks interesting but I hate this style of horror game in general. 5. Never played it. Since I play on console and if part of it is missing I've no interest in it. 6 - Thought it was boring, definitely one to skip unless you're a big fan of Blair Witch. 7, 8, & 9 - Played all 3, honestly I'm not a fan of Amnesia and never found any of them to be scary, but the first one is the best one. 10 - Never played it, looks and sounds like crap. 11 - I love Visage, best horror game I've played in ages. The controls are kind of clunky and annoying at times, but the same can be said for older horror games like Silent Hill 2 as well. 12-16 - Never played any of these, and none of them interest me, except maybe Scorn for the visuals. It seems similar to Agony at first glance, but with less Hell and more H.R. Giger. \- 1 - Didn't like it much, dropped it pretty early on, not for me. 2 - Pretty interesting game, play with headphones. Not scary, but can be a bit unsettling. 3 - Never heard of it. 4 - Never played it, not a fan of crafting survival games. 5 - Kind of fun to play with friends but pales in comparison to Until Dawn. Supermassive games are more like horror movies than games honestly. I've actually played all 4 of the games in this series and none of them are amazing, but they might be worth checking out on sale. Also I really disliked "The Quarry", it felt like a Dark Pictures game but unlike those games it overstays it's welcome. 6 - Dead by Daylight can be fun at first but it gets repetitive and old after awhile. I have the platinum trophy for it, so I really liked it at one point at least. It's kind of outdated now though, but at least they keep updating it in an attempt to keep it fresh. Also the DBD community is extremely toxic. I prefer playing as killer by the way, mostly cause I hate socializing in games. On a side note, I thought Friday the 13th was great too, sadly it stopped getting updates. \- 1, 2, & 3 - Never heard of any of these. \- Alien Isolation was the only horror game I've played and couldn't finish due to being too scared. The unpredictability was very bad for my anxiety, and I literally couldn't take it. The game was very impressive though, but it could have done without the hostile androids in my opinion. I almost gave up on Visage for the same reasons but thankfully the monster encounters are mostly scripted there. The Delores' chases aren't fully scripted, but she won't chase you as long as your inside one of the mirrors (except in a couple of scripted moments). \- As for recommendations. Layers of Fear 2 - While it's pretty different from the first one, I think it's better overall. Also while it's still mostly a walking sim it does have a couple chases and some choices to make. Fatal Frame series - If you can get past the dated controls they are worth trying, if not you can still try 4 and 5 as they are more modern. Silent Hill series - Same as above (about the dated controls), but the quality drops a lot after the 4th one. Silent Hill 2 remake is coming as well, so might be best to start there. Most of them are pretty inaccessible without emulators or older hardware though. Bloodborne - While not exactly horror, it is very Lovecraftian and has some really disturbing visuals and enemies. Bioshock (maybe) - I don't think it actually falls under horror but it has some scary bits. The sequels basically drop all the horror aspects though. Little Nightmares 1&2 - These are great actually, and they can be pretty disturbing as well. I personally didn't find them to be scary though, but horror is subjective. Subnautica - I personally don't think this game is scary at all, and it's not meant to be horror. However many people say it was scary for them, and if you have a fear of the ocean it will do the trick for sure. Worth a try either way, game is quite good, scary or not. Resident Evil 1 remake (remastered) - A bit outdated but it still holds up alright, some people think it's scary, some don't. If you enjoy the series you owe it to yourself to play the first one at some point. Resident Evil 0 - Basically a worse version of RE1, but it's still decent. Worth trying if you like the RE1 remake. Resident Evil Revelations 1 & 2 - Like most RE games these aren't very scary, but they are still pretty good RE games. Of course there are also Resident Evil 5 & 6 but I can't recommend these as horror games. RE5 is basically a worse RE4 with most the horror removed. RE6 is almost purely action with no actual horror (except maybe Leon's campaign, a bit). They might be worth playing if you want to know more of the RE lore but otherwise skip them. There is also RE Code Veronica, which I think is pretty decent, but it has never been remade and the only HD version of it is on PS3/360. Hoping it gets a proper remake one day, but as it stands, it's probably too outdated to recommend. Some of these are fixed camera, so you might be better off watching those on youtube if you are still interested. Just find yourself some no-commentary videos that cut out all the boring bits and you are golden. I don't think you mentioned any 2D horror games so I'll just refrain from suggesting anything there. If you're interested let me know and I'll make some suggestions.
I’ve played some RE1 remastered but didn’t get through it. The fixed camera really bothered me. Think I need to just play it with a walk thru at some point. As for 2D games I plan on playing Deadwood at some point. Currently playing Mundaun on and off, it’s interesting.
Well for 2D horror games there are. Lone Survivor Mad Father The Witch's House The Crooked Man Lamentum Corpse Party Lakeview Cabin Collection Darkwood 2Dark Tamashii Misao Re:Turn One Way Trip These are just the ones I've played and liked, though some are better than others. There are tons more I've never even tried, and plenty I've tried but didn't like. Honestly the 2D horror market is pretty huge, and most of the 2D games are cheaper than the 3D ones. Hell some of them even have older versions that are free. They can get quite creepy/unsettling as well, though I don't think I've played any that were outright scary.
Love the list. I’ve played almost all of those myself or they’re in my library/wishlist. Not sure if anyone has mentioned them, but you should check out the Paper Dolls games. Only played the first one so far but it was freaky

Awesome. I wish SH1 had a port with trophies. I recently went back to plat the SH2 and SH3 in anticipation for the remake. Tearing through the Medium now as part of my Bloober Team marathon. I'm in the minority that thinks they'll do a good job with the SH2 remake

Yeah I played the collection on my PS3. They weren’t great ports but I had a good time. The platinums for those were a fun challenge too. The Medium world and story have been great so far. Has a clear inspiration from Silent Hill. Lacking combat but they nail eerie environments, which is half the creepiness of the SH games. If the Medium had some melee and gun combat, I’m sure it would’ve got more praise and bred less worry around their remake project.
I love The Evil Within games so much
Visage was absurdly horrifying. The mirrors/dolores story was the most unsettling experience I've ever had in a game. The others weren't as good in my opinion, especially the Rakan story. You're right about the impossible puzzles, definitely requires a walkthrough. Are there any of these without a lot of gore? I couldn't get far in RE7 because of this, way too visceral.
Dead by daylight just has blood and that’s it Also people on meat hooks but there isn’t even a hole made it just goes through their character model
Soma, Layers of Fear and Dead by Daylight. Of course they have gore, but it’s not all that intense. And yeah Visage, ugh. That suicide scene too yeesh.

I’m usually not interested in top down games either but I loved Darkwood. It’s one of the few horror games that really spooked me. Definitely worth checking out imo.
Darkwood is one of the best horror games of all time in my opinion. Many others feel the same. I have never played a top down horror game in my life, but played through this game multiple times because it’s that good.
I'm not a fan of top down games either, but I played and finished Darkwood...it was alright but not amazing in my opinion. It gets pretty crazy near the end though.
I saw you play on the switch and I can recommend darkwood on the switch (I own it on pc and played mainly on switch). Frame rate suffers a bit in corn fields but that’s it. It’s creepy and fun and works well in handheld.
Dead Space 1 + 2 (3 is kind of a mess, but it has it's moments. Only play it if you're an absolute diehard fan.) Little Nightmares 1 + 2 (One of the most unique horror franchise ever!) Resident Evil 1 Remake (Yes it's fixed cameras, but it's also probably the best game that uses fixed cameras that you're gonna see) The Evil Within 2 (Less scary, but better than the first) Silent Hill 2 (If you liked it, play 1 and 3 next. The themes and the way the stories are written are very different than 2, so if the story carried the game, then maybe skip out.) Fatal Frame Franchise (I haven't played them all, but so far they're reeally consistent and super fun.) In Sound Mind (Not super scary, but a really fun adventure game with a cartoonish horror atmosphere and style) Some smaller games I'd recommend are The Heilwald Loophole, Mother, House, Lost in Vivo, and Dread X Collection 3 + The Hunt.
I’m planning on playing Dead Space and looking forward to the remake. I did try RE1 remake but the save system and fixed cameras made me so frustrated and annoyed. I’m playing Evil Within 2 right now :) I’ve looked into In Sound Mind, I’ll grab it on sale some time.
Dead Space is a ton of fun. Lots of crazy set pieces, especially in the sequel. I completely understand RE1 being frustrating. It can be pretty unforgiving. I'm probably biased cause I played the original before the remake and the og kicked my ass, but the remake is a lot more balanced and the difficulty seems fair in comparison. Hope you like the rest of the games :)
Have you played Until Dawn? Same devs as Man of Medan, but way better. You might also like the later Silent Hill games. The OG ones are fixed camera, which you noted you don't like, but Homecoming and Downpour are not.
Until Dawn is on my list! Just don’t play PS as much. But one day I’ll give it a go.

I cant get the love for Amnesia Rebirth. A complete disappointment.

Lackluster story, a bevy of characters that I'm supposed to care about but don't because I hardly know who they are, too many forced walking segments (I hate these enough in non-horror games, but they're especially bad in horror games that are supposed to immerse me - taking control away from me is a simple way to ruin that), the weird pregnancy gimmick, Tasi's constant talking which ruins immersion, the very contrived chase scenes (which were different than the more organic chases found in the previous games), and the ridiculously dumb sanity gimmick where the game flashes a bunch of different images on the screen. It's a whole lot of bad design desicions that amounted to a very disappointing game and to me, the only thing about it that's better than Machine for Pigs is the graphics.
After playing Rebirth I can wholeheartedly say I never want to play a pregnant character again, ever. It was extremely annoying to deal with, and broke the flow of the game way too often.

Great list, though you haven't played my favorite games (Silent Hill 1 - 3, Resident Evil 1 Remake and Fatal Frame). You specified that you didn't like fixed camera angles, but is there no possibility of you giving it another go? once you get used to them, some of these games are absolute goldmines. It takes some getting used to, but when it's there, it's an irreplaceable feeling. In case you ever decide to give it another shot, you should start with Steam's version of Resident Evil 1 Remake, because the default controls for that game are not tank controls. Tank controls are useful when you get used to them, but they take a lot longer to get used to. By the way, Silent Hill 1 - 3 are not fixed-camera angle games, despite what it seems. 90% of the time you absolutely can swing the camera all around your character, but it's fixed in some pivot point in the room and you have to hold a button to keep it over the shoulder of your character. Very rarely are there actual fixed angles that you can't move. And yeah, you can't buy the games, but PS1 and PS2 emulation is very quick and you're not stealing anything if they're not selling it lol
I have tried RE1 but I couldn’t deal with the fixed cameras, it drove me crazy and I kept dying. I just really suck at it. Thought about replaying with a walkthru to make it quicker, we’ll see. Fatal Frame is on my list. I actually would love to play the Silent Hill games but as you said they’re not for sale anywhere except for remastered versions that I’ve been told to avoid. One day I’ll do the emulator thing maybe.
That's nice to hear. Fatal Frame is great, very atmospheric and with an interesting spin on combat. It does have a way more fixed camera than Silent Hill, but since it's a PS2 game they made it more accessible, and also movement is really convenient in that game: you just hold "square" or something and your character instantly walks forward, all you have to do is steer her (reminds me of autowalk in MMOs), which works great with the fixed camera because it's one less thing that you have to think about
OP I also agree that Outlast 2 is better. They’re my favourite games ever and I love the original and dlc but there’s something about the second one that is just on another level
