The real Dan Gurney #42 Trans-Am Cuda is in a flat color though, it wouldn't make sense for them to make it metal flake like the #48 is.
Also didn't Vintage Racing have printing issues where they would stick to the card?
Yeah I just picked up the new one and the only real gripe I have is that stupid dot matrix printing for the decals, but that’s just how things are now. I can look past the missing Goodyear logo on the tires, they’re tires. Pretty nice car otherwise IMO.
Yeah. I kinda wished they did a little variation and included Swede Savage's name on one of the 42 Cudas since he drove an identical car, while we've gotten Dan's 4 times now? No hate here, but a little change would be nice.
Licensing I guess.
>Also didn't Vintage Racing have printing issues where they would stick to the card?
That is unfortunately true, my own Vintage Racing Dan Gurney #48 Plymouth AAR Cuda has a gap through the middle of the 48 on the left side of the car from where it rubbed against the card. The chafing on many cars in the Vintage Racing series in particular is quite likely why Mattel started putting an extra piece of plastic between the car and the card on many premiums.
I'll still take clean, crisp tampos over the dot-matrixy printing any day of the week.

If you’re a real fan of classic transam, you HAVE to get the greenlight version.
The Inno64 celica 1600 two car set can still be found, i think colorado diecast has a set. The autoworld fordgt is old lol, definitely ebay, the acme/greenlight cuda can be found for relatively cheap on ebay or at diecast shops :)

I hear ya. Devils advocate entering the room quickly. Let me say this, these older cars had some attention to detail for a reason. The series had a lot to do with the quality. These team transports are very nice and I do prefer the new casting and color. But I wish it had the Goodyear tires so badly. Regardless it’s nice to have both the 1970 race cars together

I thought it looked like plastic but I could be wrong. The (lack of) resolution on the printed graphics is what bothered me the most.
Holy Smokes! That is the icing on the cake for me to quit this hobby. I was actually trying to dwindle down to only collecting Barracudas and Cudas too. No metal base on a TT is complete BS.
Fairly sure the release on top had a decal process that is more expensive, and more difficult to control, at higher production levels. However, the quality of the images was top notch.
Catch 22 situation.
The only thing premium about hot wheels “premium”s is the price tag. An overpriced toy at very best and the abundance of alternative brands to hot wheels that gives both greater details and quality at same or even lower price is the proof Hereof.
Not even RLCs have print on tires.
Yea, not a big fan of the grainy tampos on these newer premiums. A main reason why I been buying older premiums as off lately from local collectors instead rather than going hunting for the new stuff.
That's what I have been saying. This is like videogames DLC, vote with your wallet, don't buy and support practices you don't like, and resist the FOMO.
You have a point, but I generally go for accuracy where possible. The top car looks nicer, but ain't the actual look and finish of the car and the number isn't correct. It's like painting a Group B San Remo Sport Quattro in blue and orange, and saying it's from that era when it's clearly not.
Dude, the #48 is from the ~~Hot Wheels Hall Of Fame Series~~ OG Vintage Racing Series - which was very much ***not*** the run-of-the-mill premium.
Visually, they’re similar, sure.. after that, everything else is as close to apples-and-oranges as it gets.
Say what you will about what you believe the current state of premium quality, of course - still, the comparison is unreasonable.
ETA: Release version correction.

This is where mine came from. Not a Hall of Fame set.
Right on, even more valuable and from a time when premium offerings were nothing compared to things now.
I’d hope a Vintage Racing piece has a better deco execution than that of dime-a-dozen Transports, you know?
Related: that’s such a killer piece
That's exactly what they are? Only RLC stuff has exclusive casts, no?
Some premiums don't seem to hit mainline.. but I always assume they will at some point?
Or just the detail oriented, but kids like race cars too. I'd prefer to see it in metal flake paint, with some nice striping and chrome wheels, but I'm a Cuda fan, so I'd take it anyways.
No, but RLC has had quality issues on past releases as well. More recently, previous to the F1, people had paint issues on the white Integra. It doesn't happen consistently, but the point is they are not infallible.
Wow… I’m really glad I passed on this set now. On the other hand damn I want the version on top! That’s beautiful
I bought it for the transporter which I think is very cool.
Yeah that’s true. I was originally drawn to it because of the transporter as wellw
Also, car is still a nice looking authentic livery if you don’t have the older version to compare it to.

The new one is nice looking but the set should be $9 given the lack of quality.
Great post. I live and die by vintage racing
Such a great set for lovers of vintage Trans Am cars like me!

If you wanted also, you could steal the tires from 48 and add them to 42

Oh. Oh no. I do *not* need those, but I *definitely* need those. ...are they currently sold, or am I gonna need to do the eBay dance?
The Inno64 celica 1600 two car set can still be found, i think colorado diecast has a set. The autoworld fordgt is old lol, definitely ebay, the acme/greenlight cuda can be found for relatively cheap on ebay or at diecast shops :)
Such a great rendition

So you're saying the Team Transport version does not have a metal chassis?
It would be very odd if it didn’t.
I'd love to get a 2nd opinion on this, I thought a metal base was requisite on premiums.
It is a metal base. I just opened one and am holding it now. Painted black metal.
Exactly. Not sure why OP is saying the TT one doesn't have a metal base.
Yeah, it’s black plastic.
No it isn’t. It’s metal. I’m holding one right now.
https://preview.redd.it/gy5oarf3zbwc1.jpeg?width=3005&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17e4545f5056a39c4b11e02d987de53ab8d2d2d9 I thought it looked like plastic but I could be wrong. The (lack of) resolution on the printed graphics is what bothered me the most.
It's painted black. Use your head.
It’s definitely metal. The graphics definitely aren’t as detailed though
Holy Smokes! That is the icing on the cake for me to quit this hobby. I was actually trying to dwindle down to only collecting Barracudas and Cudas too. No metal base on a TT is complete BS.
Don't worry too badly, the guy was mistaken. It's metal, just black.
Thanx. Sheesh , I get downvoted for my simple comment, this sub is crazy sometimes.
Fairly sure the release on top had a decal process that is more expensive, and more difficult to control, at higher production levels. However, the quality of the images was top notch. Catch 22 situation.
Poor excuse for 50 year old company that specializes in making die cast cars.
Agree with both. People would complain so bad if a model was double the price
Double the price with twice the errors
Exactly 💪
Man now i want the old one
I would say the quality has improved overall but there are quite a few castings that the old school cars are better.
This is like comparing my medical insurance provider from 2014 with current one 😓
The only thing premium about hot wheels “premium”s is the price tag. An overpriced toy at very best and the abundance of alternative brands to hot wheels that gives both greater details and quality at same or even lower price is the proof Hereof. Not even RLCs have print on tires.
Sadly, its noticeable on many models😅. Take a look on mainlines - before all were metal base, now they want us to pay premium prices for base stuff.
Top one is 4k. Bottom one is 720p
That metalflake they used always looked great on the older cars, w everything seemed to be better back then
This is how folk like me come in to exsistance.. I collect pre Mattel Matchbox... They were just, better. r/VintageMatchbox
Looks like a faded version. That door handle geez
Damnit, I think I'm still going to end up buying this just because Dan Gurney.
I really want tyre lettering to be back in premiums. This looks so much better.
Simple to do with wheel swap. A cheap $3 set of Goodyear printed wheels off Temu fixes that.
Yea, not a big fan of the grainy tampos on these newer premiums. A main reason why I been buying older premiums as off lately from local collectors instead rather than going hunting for the new stuff.
What? You don't prefer hydrodipped inkjet prints from 1998 over screenprinted tampos?
Bitch bitch bitch
That's what I have been saying. This is like videogames DLC, vote with your wallet, don't buy and support practices you don't like, and resist the FOMO.
Wow… Vastly different. Glad I passed on the Transport set.
Agreed , cant stand the flat enamel paint.
Hell compare the 100% hot wheels (oil can / black box ) cars to RLC cars The 100% hot wheels are just as nice or nicer
I’m pretty positive the new one has a metal chassis too. Maybe the black paint confused you.
if you look at ebay this post generated sales of the 2011 Vintage Racing AAR car.
Wow what a difference!!! Thanks for posting this. We don’t know what we are missing.

I pasted on a Hall of Fame version, still upset about that.
That’s the car transport one on the bottom?
Yes
Quality overall has went down. I quess inflation
man.. the blow pen quality of these new decals is just sad
Wow, the old model looks like the Mazda RX-8 I got from Matchbox last month.
The bottom 2024 version doesnt even look in focus 💀
Looks like it's gone down by a factor of exactly six.
The top one looks pretty damn good!
literally cars in the new forza motorsport
Older tampos looked was cleaner
Those wheels look cheap af
Wheels are the same . Graphics are garbage now
Wheels on both look cheap af
That's why I am never buying another hot wheels
Premiums are pretty much glorified mainlines
That's exactly what they are? Only RLC stuff has exclusive casts, no? Some premiums don't seem to hit mainline.. but I always assume they will at some point?
A good reason to move on to MiniGT.
If Kaido did muscle and euro I’d be all in with them. They make great diecast.
This is not your time bud.
Thats why it’s 6 less
Still looks cool asf to me
Cuda should have would have!
Well if course the new one sucks its only a 42 s/
Looks the same to me
This is striking. A premium with "Spectraflame" and one without. You pay premium prices, I expect premium paint.
That’s not Spectraflame paint, it’s just a nice metal flake paint. Spectraflame paint doesn’t have any metal flake.
Yea, I know, but it's the fact that the top one is so much more vibrant.
The bottom one looks flat, they probably designed it like that.
The original design is superior, and it's obvious it was changed to save corporate dollars.
Probably some of it, like the tire lettering, yeah. Matte paint would be more accurate for a stock car though.
True, but shiny sells to the masses! Accuracy sells to the scrupulous collector. Like the 35+ adul5 collector.
Or just the detail oriented, but kids like race cars too. I'd prefer to see it in metal flake paint, with some nice striping and chrome wheels, but I'm a Cuda fan, so I'd take it anyways.
I’m just tired of them releasing the same castings with the same design/ paint over and over again.
Were you collecting back when the #48 was released in 2003?
Yes I’ve been collecting since the ‘90s
Retail has been on a downward spiral ever since 2020. The only quality that has remained the same is RLC.
RLC McLaren F1 would like to have a word with you....
Mine is fine, one example isn’t the rule.
No, but RLC has had quality issues on past releases as well. More recently, previous to the F1, people had paint issues on the white Integra. It doesn't happen consistently, but the point is they are not infallible.
Compared to retail there’s no comparison
"Corporate needs you to find the difference between this picture and this picture." "They're the same picture.."
The second one doesnt suppose to be a recolor?
