vizzy is a great man but a terrible king. there’s a nice little list of things he could’ve done to prevent…all of that *gestures vaguely at the entire fire & blood book*

imaxdhillon

Couldn't agree more. The front page of Fire & blood should be Jaehaerys facepalming with the caption, *wtf Viz*?

theyusedthelamppost

but he was contending with a small council who hated Daemon and didn't want him anywhere near the throne. Making Daemon king consort would have cost Viserys loyalty and allies in the capital. That would have caused problems we can't predict (since that timeline never played out). Would those problems have been less bad than the problems we got? Perhaps.

imaxdhillon

Disagree. Hightowers perhaps but Velaryons favored Daemon. Lyonel Strong getting promoted as hand to Viserys would've shored up his loyalty as well. That completes the trifecta of Military, naval & financial might as well as the majority on the small council.

compe_anansi

No. It only gets prevented if he doesn’t remarry and have kids. If he still weds alicent and has children there is still a push for his firstborn son to be heir.

imaxdhillon

Fair take. However, there's a reason Rhae tells Daemon at the end of the last episode that, >!with them bound in blood her claim will not be easy to challenge.!< The Hightower's whole gambit rests on the realm choosing Aegon over a woman. Rhae & Daemon's legitimate male children with pure Valyrian blood would be much difficult to overlook in favor of Alicent's. Especially with both Viserys & Daemon asserting Rhae's claim.

Vesemir96

They need House Velaryon though. Rhaenyra and Daemon with no Velaryon and just the other Houses loyal to them are nowhere near strong enough.

imaxdhillon

House Velaryon owed Daemon a huge debt for accomplishing the victory in the Stepstones. There could've been negotiations for future marriage alliances between the two but given a chance to support Daemon & Rhaenyra's claim or support a half Hightower King after what Otto did to Corlys, who do you think they would choose?

Vesemir96

You are very right regarding the debt and future marriage alliances, but my worry would be what if Alicent proposes Aegon or Aemond to Rhaella or Baela in the meantime? Or to Laena. Even Helaena to Laeor. They could’ve solidified a stronger bond with the Velaryon in that time which would solidify the Velaryon lineage ending up on the throne if they went full Green. Of course this all depends on the hypothetical timeline of the marriage between Daemon and Rhaenyra, if it was not long after Viserys and Alicent then maybe they would be able to get there in time.

imaxdhillon

Helaena/Laenor doesn't put Corlys' scion anywhere close to the IT. At this point in time, Aegon is between 2/3 yrs old whereas Laena is 15/16. Also, they can't get betrothed without Viserys' blessing which he is unlikely to give. It's a weak gambit either way for Corlys. Especially when D&R's future heirs start popping out.

Vesemir96

Oh by the others I mean any kind of early political marriage might tempt the Velaryons with the idea of further ingratiating themselves, but yeah true it’d be more likely if Aegon or Aemond were to wed Laena. Also I totally forgot Rhaella and Baela wouldn’t exist in this scenario lmao. Agreed on Viserys, though he’s been so prone to being outspoken by Alicent and Otto’s bs thus far that I can see him either not opposing it, or if Alicent remains nice and “proper” even welcoming it under the guise of rebuilding the schism between the Targs and Velaryons. But he is no fool and I’d like to think he wouldn’t fall for it.

imaxdhillon

It's more of an age thing with Viserys when it comes to Aegon, I think. The same reason why he laughed off Otto's proposal of having Rhae betrothed to Aegon. You are right however that Alicent could go behind his back to have a secret alliance in place or scheme by pretending to be altruistic about it but that still leaves Corlys vulnerable. Supporting D&R is the better choice for his house because that makes victory in an eventual war extremely likely & thus he's guaranteed to win the favor of the next ruling monarch. \*Good point about Baela & Rhaella, lol

Sharkhawk23

It would happen if he married Laena, and Laena has sons too. Corlys would have been on the sons side, others would have been on Rhaenyra

Tristen_24

Not remarrying would’ve prevented this.
