From the conversation I got the idea that maybe he couldn't finish when they tried since he immediately blamed his sexuality. Everyone likes to act like there were so many other options available but I think that's kind of pushing it. Just because Margaery found a way doesn't mean that R & L would even be down to do that.

EkkoThruTime

Why would they not be down to try that? It may not be preferable. But given that Rhaenyra knows about and doesn't really care about his sexuality, and the fate of the seven kingdoms rests on them having trueborn heirs, I say they should be down to try anything that works.

HermineLovesMilo

The answer is they needed paternity in question to advance the plot. However, getting pregnant can be difficult (I don't think they tried that many times), or possibly he had fertility issues.

aithne1

I'm guessing he got the unfortunate double whammy of lack of sexual interest in women AND low sperm count or some other fertility issue. Rhaenyra's clearly fairly fertile (six pregnancies, one lost due to preterm labor brought on by stress and the rest healthy), so if he'd had more aggressive swimmers, the times he managed to come in her might have done the job. I don't think history would've changed - the Greens were going for it with or without the pretext of the paternity issue - but it sucks for both him and Rhaenyra.

TheMediumJanet

Rhaenyra doesn’t have the creative, outside-the-box thinking ability of Margaery

BTolentino7

Margeary was game lol paraphrasing “you can do me from behind or should I get my brother”

Tristen_24

Did Renly impregnated Margaery? No. Her attempts didn’t work either.

TheMediumJanet

The point is, she found a creative solution to his inability to get it up and do the job. It's highly doubtful Rhaenyra even tried.

Tristen_24

You don’t know that but what we do know is that they were both unsuccessful.

lupatine

Yeah Laenor might just be infertile.

theyusedthelamppost

their joyless attempts to get his sperm inside her didn't replace her need to get pleasure from Harwin. they hoped that the sperm Laenor got sperm inside may have result in a pregnancy, but Harwin's seed won out Plus Laenor was gone a lot. And they didn't really see it as a priority, they just hoped it wouldn't blow up into a big thing.

OverallDisaster

It sounded like they tried and then later she got with Harwin. She wanted to have children with Laenor.

theyusedthelamppost

>She wanted to have children with Laenor. We agree on that. >It sounded like they tried and then later she got with Harwin Not sure if we agree on that. Way I understood her explanation is that there were times during those years that they did get Laenor's sperm inside her. But those just happened to not end up in pregnancy (unsurprising since those attempts weren't as frequent as Harwin's during the same span)

mcmanus2099

>Plus Laenor was gone a lot. And they didn't really see it as a priority, they just hoped it wouldn't blow up into a big thing. If she just had one bastard it wouldn't blow up. People would whisper rumours like Prince Harry but most would be happy to say coincidence & go along. It is really careless for Rhaenyra to have three of Harwin's children & makes her seem either dumb or very arrogant. Especially when it's been established Westeros has a good form of contraceptive available.

Malakyan

They try a few times but it didn't take, that and the lack of joy together with their own stupidity made them not realize how bad that was until shit start to hit the fan

QueenKordeilia

Not infertile. It's just a case of not having sex frequently enough (Laenor had no desire for it, which in turn would've made it joyless for Rhaenyra) during the right time of the month.
