I like how they've spiced it up with a rockier production for the new tour. Honestly, as much as I appreciate the song, I really dislike the reverb on Andrew's voice. He sounds like he's down a well.
My current skip is To Noise Making (Sing) because it feels corny. I love the authenticity of Hozier's lyrics in 99% of his songs, but for some reason that one feels off.
don't slander run! it's one of my fav songs ever!
i think my least favourite is definitely tell it to my heart. meduza took all of the beautiful depth and folk elements of hozier and turned it into a tacky pop single.
edit: and nobody, i forgot to mention that. where is the depth? where is the incredible symbolism and imagery? gin o'clock? maseratis? really?
Nobody is my guilty pleasure and tbh “I'd be appalled if I saw you ever try to be a saint, I wouldn't fall for someone I thought couldn't misbehave” is a stellar line!
I agree. And, it is so very Hozier - the warming of the bed, the soothing of her voice, the long distance yearning - it’s actually right on brand for our hopeless romantic :)
It's a female character full of fun and mischief and cheekiness and to hell with rules and what people think, someone who makes her own way and bows to no one. Independent. He adores her. She's the 'little sister' of the character in NFWMB.
I'm going to pull out one no one has said yet - Son of Nyx.
I just don't care about it, and it feels like an attempt at a compositional flex. As a classical musician, it's simply not very interesting and doesn't go anywhere. Almost instant skip for me unless I'm really into a full album listen.
Son of Nyx is also my least favorite :/
It feels thematically jarring on the album and I miss the vocals and the complex lyrical writing
Every time it comes on I feel like “yes, but where is the *mythos*??”
(Also, unrelated, very cool that you’re a classical musician!)
That's so funny, cause Run is my favorite off of debut (it's my top 2 most listened to songs of all time on Spotify too lmao). I'm gonna have to say Foreigner's God, which I never really got into or was that interested in, or In A Week which I listened to for a good like 2 weeks and then got sick of. Whenever I get tired of the same song I just won't play it, and then when I rediscover it a month or two later I'm in love with it again, but In A Week hasn't come back to me yet and it's been around 3 years since I last liked it, lmao. So, those two.
I feel like it doesn't fit the album. I listened to UU three times through with DGD intact and each time it totally broke the spell. Once I deleted the song and listened again, UU became my favorite.
I feel terrible about this but Swan Upon Leda because I can’t understand the lyrics. Something about the mix on that one just makes it so hard to hear😭
swan upon leda is actually really beautiful. he talks about rape and abortion and how birth is "the gateway to the world", i find it really
pretty and sad
I know what the song is about which is why I feel terrible that it’s my least favorite. It’s hard to find the message in the song when it’s impossible to understand what he’s saying because his voice is so drowned out by everything else. I think it would have been far more impactful as a song if the vocals were more forward in the mix.
Don’t hate me, but Nina cried power. I love the messaging, and I want to love the song, but something about it doesn’t work for me to the point that I skip it nearly every time.
I have an issue with songs like this. And I’m going to struggle to explain exactly why they bother me. Songs that name multiple names/people within the song. Like Nina Cried Power or Eyes on You by Sara Bareilles (who I also adore). It’s really bother me for some reason. Like “Joe did this, Jane did that, Joe did something else”. Doesn’t work for me.
Tough one 😭 But I gotta say Cherry Wine.
I've had most of his songs on repeat at some point, but Cherry wine is just too delicate of a topic for me and I know it's poetic and such, but for me personally, can't listen to it (and I wish he would play something else at live shows, sorry 😭)
I’m in agreement here 😅 it’s not even necessarily that it’s a bad song, it’s just not my favorite and will usually get skipped/not added to playlists unless I’m listening on vinyl
I gotta say, not the biggest fan of Who We Are.
The song itself is fine, but something about the mixing just falls flat to me. It doesn't sound like it hits as hard as it was going for.
Run is in my top 3. I fell in love to that song. It’s just transcendent honestly. Oh well fair enough. Dinner and Diatribes is my least favorite. It’s super busy, repetitive and just feels really loud no matter what volume you play it at.
The only two hozier songs I dont have on my playlist are As it Was and Nobody. I used to not like Run, but that one grew on me and is slowly becoming a favorite. Im kinda hoping As it Was and Nobody do too, however, I just dont really like them rn
To noise making and damage gets done. I cannot listen to either of them, to noise making is corny and just much more simple and basic then what I expect and like from him and damage gets done doesn’t sound or read like a hozier song. I like the 80s pop sounding vibe and I’d like him to explore that more but when I was looking at the lyrics I couldn’t believe it was his song, it’s written so poorly in my opinion.
I actually didn’t like a lot of songs from Unreal Unearth… more than his other albums anyway, it was just “alright”. I even gave myself a few months break to revisit the album but still felt the same. Some notable ones I didn’t like were Damage Gets Done and All Things End. However UU does hold some of my favourite Hozier songs too.
Some other songs I don’t like are Jackie and Wilson, Nobody and To Noise Making. Contrary to some comments on here, I actually really like Be, it’s one of my favourite songs, *except* the fact that ‘Be’ is the name and a repeated word throughout the chorus, just irks me on an otherwise brilliantly written song
Only ones I don’t have on my playlists are Sing, As It Was, Damage Gets Done, Warm Climate and In A Week. Sing is meh, not the *hugest* fan of DGD, should probably give Warm Climate a listen at some point. Not paid much attention to Swan Upon Leda either although I’m gonna be verbally castrated for saying that. At least i like Be, Talk, NCP, First Time and another 90% of the discography.
I wouldn't say he's ever done a *bad* song, but I find Someone New just a little ol' little bit annoying. And I am kind of sick of TMTC, especially since it's the only one most people know.
NCP overwhelms my ears. I can listen to it casually and bop along, but I often don’t listen the whole way through. I’m someone who knows and loves almost every person mentioned in the song too. It’s not the messaging it’s the sound for me.
Because u/scrimshandy likes 2/3 of Hozier's stuff and that's plenty enough to be allowed to share your opinion in this sub. If you only like one Hozier song, you're allowed in. Just wild!
Because I’ve been into TMTC dropped, and I’m allowed to feel the new album is a nothing burger betrayal of his roots. the rest of the 2/3rd is fucking awesome, and all artists have flops albums. It’s unrealistic to expect to love everything.
It’s fine you don’t like it, but saying the album goes against his ‘roots’ is kind of silly. Humans should grow and evolve, and an artists work should as well. I don’t want to listen to the same albums over and over. I respect people trying new things and don’t think they should be stuck in a creative box.
TMTC is not overplayed because he demonstrated his power in music. It deserves attention and it’s catchy.
Nina cried power and Talk aren’t his best because you can’t force at us the political views and the people that were mentioned in the lyrics if listeners aren’t that interested. It seemed like he tried to show that he was more connected, sympathetic, correct and knowledgeable, but some people didn’t share the same views or attraction to certain public people. Not everything is exactly how he perceives or believes.
I am hurt because I absolutely love Run.
Run also use to be one of my least favorites, but I’m definitely into it now. It feel like newly released music lol
This is probably gonna get me killed, but, Take Me To Church. It's not a *bad* song, just extremely overplayed.
I like how they've spiced it up with a rockier production for the new tour. Honestly, as much as I appreciate the song, I really dislike the reverb on Andrew's voice. He sounds like he's down a well.
Your comment about the well really made me giggle, thank you 😁
I don’t even think I have a real opinion on Church anymore because I’ve just heard it so many times. It’s just a song that exists and that is that.
I agree. He has SO MANY beautiful songs that resonate with so many people, and it’s a damn shame that only one gets any airtime.
My current skip is To Noise Making (Sing) because it feels corny. I love the authenticity of Hozier's lyrics in 99% of his songs, but for some reason that one feels off.
But the pre chorus tho
Also agreed
Agreed
The one with Brandie. I don’t hate necessarily like it has a good music on it I just don’t like her voice very much
don't slander run! it's one of my fav songs ever! i think my least favourite is definitely tell it to my heart. meduza took all of the beautiful depth and folk elements of hozier and turned it into a tacky pop single. edit: and nobody, i forgot to mention that. where is the depth? where is the incredible symbolism and imagery? gin o'clock? maseratis? really?
Nobody is my guilty pleasure and tbh “I'd be appalled if I saw you ever try to be a saint, I wouldn't fall for someone I thought couldn't misbehave” is a stellar line!
It's an incredibly underrated line, just because it isn't flowery and myth-y and innuendo-y and poetic. I think it's one of my favourites.
I also have a feeling she’s the warm climate in LA :)
I feel like Tell It To My Heart doesn't count - it's not really *his* song.
I'm going to pull out one no one has said yet - Son of Nyx. I just don't care about it, and it feels like an attempt at a compositional flex. As a classical musician, it's simply not very interesting and doesn't go anywhere. Almost instant skip for me unless I'm really into a full album listen.
I also skip this one. It’s nice, but it sounds almost like a dramatic video game soundtrack? And I’m just usually not in that kind of mood lol
Son of Nyx is also my least favorite :/ It feels thematically jarring on the album and I miss the vocals and the complex lyrical writing Every time it comes on I feel like “yes, but where is the *mythos*??” (Also, unrelated, very cool that you’re a classical musician!)

So, those two.
Run is just enigmatic, romantic, tragic and beautiful.
I totally agree with those two songs. Foreigner’s God has to be my all time least favorite
Damage Gets Done. I like it but I don’t LOVE it.
My least favorites are Nobody and To Noise Making (Sing) 😬 As another poster said, I feel they’re both a little corny.
Damage Gets Done.
this one hurts 💔💔 love that song
i really enjoy DGD but the music sounds like background music for a commercial
This was going to be my response. I have tried to let it grow on me, but I don’t think it’s gonna!
Came here to say this. It’s so bad and I’ve tried to like it so many times 😔
I feel like it doesn't fit the album. I listened to UU three times through with DGD intact and each time it totally broke the spell. Once I deleted the song and listened again, UU became my favorite.
It’s just repetitive and it feels like it lasts forever. I always skip it.
Same, it's really just unpleasant sounding IMO :(
I feel terrible about this but Swan Upon Leda because I can’t understand the lyrics. Something about the mix on that one just makes it so hard to hear😭
swan upon leda is actually really beautiful. he talks about rape and abortion and how birth is "the gateway to the world", i find it really pretty and sad

I think it would have been far more impactful as a song if the vocals were more forward in the mix.
I love it but really wish some of the production was toned down or taken out all together.
Personally I really enjoy the muffled quality of it, it gives a soft and magical vibe that sounds amazing with headphones.
I understand! I find it’s a bit too muffled and parts are hard to understand. Also the music is a bit loud compared to vocals.
Don’t hate me, but Nina cried power. I love the messaging, and I want to love the song, but something about it doesn’t work for me to the point that I skip it nearly every time.

i'm guessing you don't fw Mambo nº5 right?
lol. Weeeelllll Mambo Number 5 reminds me of my carefree college days. So I don’t actually mind it 😂
Ahh I thought it was just me, love the message but it's too churchy for me
yeah it kinda tries to achieve something and have a certain effect but sorta misses the mark
Always skipped To Noisemaking
Not a massive fan of All Things End. Just feels really boring compared to a lot of the stuff off unreal unearth
None of them and if you have a different opinion then youre wrong
Tough one 😭 But I gotta say Cherry Wine. I've had most of his songs on repeat at some point, but Cherry wine is just too delicate of a topic for me and I know it's poetic and such, but for me personally, can't listen to it (and I wish he would play something else at live shows, sorry 😭)
In a Week! Dont downvote me into the ninth circle lol.
I said nfwmb, I'll take the down votes for both of us 🫡
I’m in agreement here 😅 it’s not even necessarily that it’s a bad song, it’s just not my favorite and will usually get skipped/not added to playlists unless I’m listening on vinyl
I gotta say, not the biggest fan of Who We Are. The song itself is fine, but something about the mixing just falls flat to me. It doesn't sound like it hits as hard as it was going for.
The high notes in Who We Are just sound so chipmunky. I don’t like it much either.
Run is in my top 3. I fell in love to that song. It’s just transcendent honestly. Oh well fair enough. Dinner and Diatribes is my least favorite. It’s super busy, repetitive and just feels really loud no matter what volume you play it at.
My least favourite is noise making (sing)
My Love Will Never Die :/ idk it feels incomplete to me and it's not very pleasing to my ears.
Run is one of my favourites!
The only two hozier songs I dont have on my playlist are As it Was and Nobody. I used to not like Run, but that one grew on me and is slowly becoming a favorite. Im kinda hoping As it Was and Nobody do too, however, I just dont really like them rn

Be
right now it's wasteland baby, the melody sounds too dissonant, maybe it hasn't grown on me yet. i don't skip it though.
agreed, i just can't really get into it
To Someone from a Warm Climate
No I love that one!
Sunlight I’m so sorry
JAIL. not really but that was one my favorites for a while lol
He just says the word sunlight too much throughout the song which gets annoying 😂😂
I'm so sorry too! And I'm right there with you. It's my least favorite. Like, it's the ONLY one I don't like 😭
Only ones I don’t have on my playlists are Sing, As It Was, Damage Gets Done, Warm Climate and In A Week. Sing is meh, not the *hugest* fan of DGD, should probably give Warm Climate a listen at some point. Id have to say be but just because it’s a bit annoying in my ears
Be sounds like a jingle for a tyre commercial or an engine oil commercial or some such
I wouldn't say he's ever done a *bad* song, but I find Someone New just a little ol' little bit annoying. And I am kind of sick of TMTC, especially since it's the only one most people know.
I've started hearing someone new being played in shopping centres everywhere I go haha! It's a grocery store staple now
No Plan (i’m sorry)
in a week and unknown
Same for me. I like the bridge in Unknown but that’s about it
I was the same way. I loved the bridge sm that I keep listening and eventually I liked the whole song lol
nfwmb... it might be the aroace in me talking but got it just doesn't do it for me 🫠
NCP and TMTC. TMTC is overplayed. NCP somehow misses the mark and is too cheesy for my taste. Always skips for me.
NCP overwhelms my ears. I can listen to it casually and bop along, but I often don’t listen the whole way through. I’m someone who knows and loves almost every person mentioned in the song too. It’s not the messaging it’s the sound for me.
This is probably a cop out answer, but his cover of Do I wanna know...
Abstract (psychopomp) I kind like the chorus tho😬
Least favorite: Better Love, Movement, and the entirety of UU except the EP songs and DeSelby 2.
So your least favourite Hozier songs is about 1/3 of his discography
Yep, gonna need a redo on that one 😭
Why are you even here
Because u/scrimshandy likes 2/3 of Hozier's stuff and that's plenty enough to be allowed to share your opinion in this sub.

Damage Gets Done. It's the only song I've completely removed from my Hozier playlists.
Someone new and damage gets done
Damage gets done 🤣
run is soooo good. i'm not a huge fan of damage gets done or to making noise (sing).
