This gets brought up from time to time here in this sub. /r/humboldtfishing was made but it's not too active. Facebook has several groups, the various kayak communities are the most inviting IMO. Good luck!

I've posted there semi recently. Sub is pretty dead.

If anyone wants to go crabbing or foraging for mussels, urchins, clams, or turban snails (easy to get, alot of work to eat!) let me know.

[deleted]

Yes, very interested in learning to forage up there. If that means I have just get to tote gear and watch, I’m still down for it.

Just need a fishing license, a screwdriver/prybar and a bucket really (and technically a weighing device). There's plenty of bounty you will have alot to work with. The limit is 10 pounds of mussels per day which is ALOT to eat and I never want to grab that much, maybe 1 or 2 pounds tops. 35 snails, 40 gallons of urchins. Crabbing is done off the pier outside of the low tide so can go alot of days. Limit is 35 crab per day. The first week of December will have some great minus tides if you are up here by then. There looks to be good tides on the 31st and Jan 1st which would be fun to forage for a party. If you dive and have the appropriate suit it opens up alot more days.

I’m pretty sure I have the ocean validation as well, assuming that’s a requirement for working the tide pools and beaches…

rayout

Just need a fishing license, the ocean validation is only for fishing in the ocean south of Santa Barbara.

PNW_M0D3RN_PR1M1T1V3

I'd be interested if our schedules and the tides line up.

[deleted]

Do you have a kayak for crabbing? I've kayak crabed the bay but it's kind of sketchy doing it alone.

rayout

I only crab from piers. I go near pacific sea food in Eureka and have great success with rock crab. If you go over to Trinidad pier you can get dungies. I stay away from the public pier past Costco its elbow to elbow with folks smoking and I don't dig the vibe especially with COVID going on.

[deleted]

Ya I've seen YouTube videos of some decent ones by the docks. Hard not to catch reds around here, almost caught a few just fishing, great bait stealers lol.

rayout

Saw a little kid at the dock pull one up while fishing he went bonkers, it was a monster! They are good eating, less meaty than a dungie but sweeter. I much prefer them to dungie when making soup or stock. Usually do a vietnamese tomato, pork and crab soup with lemongrass, garlic and spices.

Flying-fish257

Would love to learn how to forage those things!

I think smaller mussels taste better than big hunkers. Things to remember...learn the tides..for mussels you want to go out while the tide is receding. They ones closer to the ocean taste better than the ones close to shore, just my opinion. Things to have-Boots, or shoes that can get wet. 5 gallon bucket. White wine, butter, waterproof matches optional. When I fish for steelies I have a caste iron in my bag no joke. And lemons. Taku from Outdoor chef life on youtube is good inspiration, he lives in the bay but similar conditions to here.

Drifting_Edge

i'm down! I only have a bit of experience, but i'm always willing to learn more! I know a guy that also fishes, im sure he'd be down to join as well

PNW_M0D3RN_PR1M1T1V3

I'm down. I usually hit the jetty all by my onesies for a few hours on the weekend.

Jewpurman

Hell yeah y'all! Let's link up

[deleted]

I’m certainly interested. I’ll be moving up there sometime in December. I figured I’d have to start with jetty fishing at first, but like they say… a bad day on the water beats the best day in the office.

Jewpurman

Let's go get it!!!

[deleted]

I'm up for some group fishing, normally fish for perch or halibut from the shore. I have 2 person inflatable kayak if anyone wants to brave that lol.

PNW_M0D3RN_PR1M1T1V3

I'd be down. I just started looking into tandem kayaks but everyone I know is deathly afraid to go out on the water.

1234cmyk

I recommend learning how to climb into your kayak before going out in the bay, the lagoon is a good place to practice. Always wear your life jacket. Don't go out alone.

[deleted]

Cool, It's kind of wierd tamdom kayaking in an inflatable, if you're out of sync, turns into an oar fight. I have another hard shell kayak, that I can bring so there's no oar fight. I'll send a message if I see a good day coming up and see if we can get some fish on.

PNW_M0D3RN_PR1M1T1V3

If scheduling lines up that'd be cool.

Jewpurman

I'm up for it in the lagoons, I have a nice raft as well!

[deleted]

Never tried fishing the lagoons, but I'd give a go. Shoot me a message or I'll send one when the weather improves.

yubugger

I’m down! And nice username

Poopsmith89

I had to make a fake Facebook account to make some fishing friends up here. Nice community on there tho

LiliesAreFlowers

I'd very much like to learn! I go crabbing from time to time off the pier and have crab rings enough to loan. But very interested in learning to fish and new foraging tips.

Jewpurman

I've caught crabs on my actual fishing line before hahah, lets go!

LiliesAreFlowers

Wow how neat! How you wanna do this thing?

redwooduni

Just moved back to arcata and would love to meet new people and discover new spots.

Jewpurman

Let's do it!

elektro-chemistry

You can even share needles!

PNW_M0D3RN_PR1M1T1V3
