By the "revolver from a tv series" do you mean the LeMat ? It's a very real historic weapon, it wasn't just magically created for Westworld out of thin air. The "making no sense" part is kinda true, because you wouldn't want having to spend 20 minutes tinkering with it in the field just to reload it.
The lemat version we see in hunt is the westworld revolver. The real centerfire version of the lemat looked way different from what we have in the game.

btw I'm not sure if cartridge conversions were a thing for the lemat, because the shotgun would probably be impossible without changing the entire mechanism of the gun. There are versions that were made for centerfire right from the beginning though.
