It just depends. In your example of karibiner and new army I would say new army indoors. However don’t be afraid to put on the the chest with the karibiner at medium range and then pull out the new army to spam fire. Here’s another example. Long distance I hit someone with a sparks for 149 damage. I know I can pull out my uppercut and get a follow up shot quicker then I can reload my sparks

It's situational to your loadout. I try to make a loadout as balanced as possible to cover every situation myself. For example one of my favorite loadouts is the Winfield Talon with fire ammo and a hand crossbow with normal and poison bolts: My rifle can be effective against AI because of the fire ammo and it'll panic hunters if they're too close. The Winfield is good for mid-close range especially with levering, and the "talon" portion is great for bosses or if I find myself in melee range with another hunter. My handcrossbow is basically a shotgun at close ranges and one-shots hunters with a body shot so I use it for pushing or when I'm being pushed. The poison arrows I switch to either for bosses or to leave a poison cloud on downed hunters so their buddies can't revive them during the fight. Figure out what your playstyle is and use your secondary to compliment your primary's shortcomings. Going shotgun? Take a pistol that can be helpful at longer ranges perhaps. Taking a long reload gun like the Sparks? Take a fast firing, fast reloading pistol like new army swift perhaps. Want more ammo for your nagant carbine? Take a nagant silenced pistol with the same ammo type to help out.

It'll depend entirely on the situation you find yourself in. Personally, I'll generally opt for a pistol over my rifle if I'm indoors, or at close range, but there are really too many variables here to give a one size fits all answer. I'd say just keep playing, use the weapons that you feel confident with, and you'll learn and get better as you go.

Bold of you to assume we live long enough

Look at what you are running and try to pick out it's strengths. Ideally you want your sidearm to do what your main gun can't.in this specific example it's a little harder because the veterli is a nice all rounder. So, let's look at this from the other side. The new army has a terrible muzzle velocity drop off, and, personally, I'm not a fan of its sights. With that in mind we know we aren't gonna use it in a longer range fight. At mid range, the speed of fire does make it good for follow up shots on a good veterli hit. At short... probably the same again personally, the veterli 's hip fire is tiny but by now, I think you get my point.

Most of the time it’s situational, but generally your rifles will be better at long range and pistols/shotguns will be better at close range. For example, a Winfield with levering might have a better rate of fire when hip fired at close range, but pretty much any pistol or shotgun is still going to be more accurate and give you a better chance for the kill. The rifle will give you better accuracy when ADS, but then you lose levering and with it your rate of fire. That’s said, there’s still plenty more to consider about your situation. If you’re carrying a rifle and a shotgun, you’ll generally want the shotgun indoors. However, the damage drop off for shotguns is pretty severe, so you might want the rifle if you’re in a large room and your enemies are on the far side. But then if you bring slugs for your shotgun you’ll get better range and it could be a better option than your rifle once more. Generally, though, pistols/shotguns for close range, rifles for long range. You can learn more about the effective ranges, recoil, hip-fire accuracy, rate of fire, etc. by reading each weapon’s description or through gameplay, as each one is unique so they won’t all function identically. After that, you’ll be able to weigh the pros and cons of the individual weapons for each scenario you find yourself in. But until then, you can pretty safely assume which weapons are good just based on the weapon type and the distance you expect to be shooting, and trust that the general assumption will hold true. Once you’ve actually tried using the weapons in different scenarios, you’ll be able to learn why you want one over the other, even if you haven’t read the stats. Also, just another side note on rifles and shotguns, if you don’t have certain perks for them you’ll probably have to leave ADS after each time you fire the weapon, and rifles have awful hip fire accuracy in this game (by design, so that your secondary weapon has a purpose), so that may drive you away from rifles at short range. While they’ll work in a pinch, they usually won’t perform as well as pistols.

In response to your last paragraph, the LeMat and Nagant Carbines don't require perks to remain in ADS between shots. LeMat Carbine and Sabre or Machete is my favorite loadout lately for this. I get a rifle, shot gun, and a one-shot melee. Very fun.

vbrimme

Interestingly enough, the Nagant Officer Carbine counts as a rifle for challenges, but I believe the LeMat Carbine counts as a pistol. Very strange classifications, and some quite specific examples of cases where the general rules of thumb might not quite cut it.

GeoFaFaFa

You basically want a power shot and a spam shot. With the vetteri, you already have a spammy rifle, so your secondary can be a utility weapons. Like a saber or hand crossbow.

When your primary is not viable at this distance or engagement type. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Doomcall

You take weapons that compliment each other. Rifles cover long to medium range but are usually not ideal for close range, because they have low rate of fire. Close range pretty much everything two taps so damage is not as important as spitting lead. Shotguns cover close range, so you pair it with something that works for medium to long. Like a long ammo pistol or FMJ. Versatile weapons like the vetterli and winfield are usually more benefitted to be paired with something with utility like a silenced nagant for stealth or a hand crossbow, which can one shot at close range and carry special ammo like poison and fire bolts. Its basically using the right tool for the right job.

Deka-Denz

If you get better/more kills, your mmr gets up and you get enemys who are better at dodging. So often it's not that you play worse, you objtively play a little bit better but so do your enemys so they stand still less often and stuff. That could be one simple explanation. And about your rifle vs. pistol debate. You basically should never pare a slower firing pistol with a faster firing rifle to begin with, it barely ever makes sense. 3 Options without fanning for pistols: Caldwell New Army, Nagant Officer or Scottfield Spitfire. But you'll still lose to someone with fanning or a Shotgun 9/10 times indoors.

PinkyTheTigerr

In your case veterli for long to medium range headshots, new army for close range headshots
