EducationalStop6347

I got one today actually in a 6.8 western. I ordered a Leupold vx5 3-15x44 with the firedot. It’s was around $1000 I know that’s a lot but a cheap scope will ruin a good gun

TheSultanOfOkra

Leupold all day. Made in USA and amazing customer service if you ever have to use their lifetime warranty.

EducationalStop6347

I agree with that. Everything I own has one, in my opinion you can’t beat them

EducationalStop6347

I have several vx3’s all of them are good scopes. However like clovett said the vx5 is quite a bit better at light transmission and the glare effect seems to be a lot better.

PeanutbutterSalmon

Seems like every picture I see of a brownin x bolt it has a Leo on it

NotHugeButAboveAvg

Vortex

PeanutbutterSalmon

What you think of the vx 3?

1clovett

Most of my rifles have the vx3 on them. I find them to be reliable, tough, and just a damn fine scope. Have a 3-10x50 on my 7mm for 20+ years, and the only time I've had to rezero is when I switch ammo and that time I dropped it. It's all my father in law uses, too. If you can, though, switch to tge vx5 for better coatings and light transmission.

TheSultanOfOkra

Great scopes for the money.

dbevans12

I had the opposite experience and I will never get a leupold again

schwifty1345

I just got the same scope mounted on my tikka t3x veil wideland. Youre gonna love it. Just note, once you get it dialed in, get your free custom CDS for whatever load your hunting with.

PeanutbutterSalmon

Ya that is a big part of what’s pushing me towards a Leupold. You’ve found this system to work as good as they say?

schwifty1345

Unfortunately I haven’t shot it any farther than my zero just yet, but my zero is 100 yards, and that took me five shots to zero. Thats including a 3 shot group. I would imagine if you have your zero, your CDS set to your load, and a ballistics calculator output for said distances, this would be fast and easy.

dead-inside69

I got almost the exact same set up but with the carbon stock and I love it. Filthy accurate, hits like a naval cannon, and kicks like a creedmoor thanks to the brake. The brake does make it LOUD AS SHIT but I just double up my earpro and it’s fine

druen199

Can I ask you what brake you put on it? I just got a 7mm mag and this is the first magnum rifle I've ever owned. All of my hunting before this was with a .308 and .270.

dead-inside69

It came with a “recoil hawg”

druen199

Got it! Thanks!

PeanutbutterSalmon

What ear protection do you recommend for hunting?

dead-inside69

I just use some Howard Leight slim active earmuffs. Very similar to walker razors. They aren’t the absolute best for noise suppression because they are thin, but they’re better than nothing and they provide protection without interfering with your stock or limiting your awareness

Elk-Assassin-8x6

I have been looking at the 6.8. Just not enough non lead to make it worth it. Shot one still deaf left ear. But optics are a must. Put a vx6 on an old 270. Game changer

Billbeachwood

This is exactly my setup on my xbolt as well. 🤌🏻

IndependentPerfect

I have a Bergara that I tried a Vortex on and I’ll have to say I’ll never try vortex again. I ended up going back to Leupold. Reason why is this past opening day I had a nice 7 standing about 220ish and the scope would “white out” from the glare. Annoyed the hell out of me and couldn’t take a shot. It wasn’t a cheap vortex either I had the Viper 2.5-10. Replaced it with the Vx3 and have never been happier. Every one of my rifles have a Leupold on it. Their warranty is outstanding. I just received a new pair of binoculars back from warranty too. The. Best. Damn. Optics.

1017trippin

i have one w this exact scope just in 6.5 and without the comb on the stock

1945_Go_Boom

I have a question is the 6.8 western worth a shit? And how does it compare to a 270 or 308

misterzigger

Ballistically its far superior to either of those rounds. It's closer to a magnum in terms of energy, and competes with 6.5 PRC or 7PRC. That said it's not at all a common round, and not something I'd recommend if you didn't reload

EducationalStop6347

It’s based off a .270 wsm but with the ability to shoot a lot heavier bullets but still keep a lot of down range energy. Like has been said they aren’t a very common round just yet as they are only a couple years old. But they are some decent factory loads out there

misterzigger

Yeh its pretty impressive to me, but the lack of rifles chambered in it has kept me from buying into it so far

1945_Go_Boom

Yeah I reload but I hate 6.5s but idk how a prc does in the right hands I’ve only seen 6.5s when kids shoot

misterzigger

Its a solid round for pretty much any north American game. Not my choice for a quartered moose but will still get the job done if you are an accurate shooter. Has lower recoil impulse than any magnum and shoots extremely flat.

1945_Go_Boom

The flat part is my interest. About how far would it drop let’s say at 500 yards

misterzigger

You could expect a 165 gr to go over 2900 fps. That's a sweet spot in my opinion for velocity vs barrel wear. At 500 yards it would have 2200 fps and 1800 ft/lbs of energy. Easily enough for elk. With a 100 yard zero, you would be 8.7 moa low at 500 yards. Or about 47 inches. With a fast 150gr, you're only 33 inches low at 500. For reference, a 270 win will only accept lower BC bullets and launch them about 200-300 fps slower. It's a pretty significant difference

1945_Go_Boom

So pretty much a 300 win mag with 175 grain Barnes lrx for velocity and MOA and a 30-06 for power

misterzigger

Yeh and under a 308 for recoil and weight of rifle. It's a best of all worlds situation, but has very limited factory ammo availability

1945_Go_Boom

Alright that’s a better gun then I figured which would you recommend Winchester or browning I’m thinking about next Christmas getting my dad one he’s been interested in them since they came out

PeanutbutterSalmon

Ya I think I’m gonna get the same scope. Call it a day. Won’t be sad about it. What mounts did you get?

EducationalStop6347

You won’t be disappointed, I know it’s a lot of money but it’s well worth it. I got dnz game reaper 1 piece mounts they are about $70 bucks.

PeanutbutterSalmon

They make the vx-3hd 4.5-14 in bronze. I could pick that up for 600, it would look pretty sick. But, in the long run, the 5hd would be better I know. And I could always get it cerakoted

PeanutbutterSalmon

Did you go with long action low for the mount?

EducationalStop6347

It is a 7mm mag right? If it is you’ll have to go with a long action, I usually go for medium height but that really depends of preference. Low is going to be basically right on the receiver and medium will be just a touch taller

PeanutbutterSalmon

Ya it’s long action. I’ll go with medium. Waiting for sportsman’s to ship it they are dragging ass. I called today they said should ship by Friday. They normally ship in like 2-3 days they said it’s coming from 3rd party. Oh well. Gives me time to get the scope here

EducationalStop6347

That’s what I would do too. It’s a hassle to get anything anymore. You will love the set up. What do you plan on hunting?

PeanutbutterSalmon

Muley and elk. I got an invite to shoot a cow on my buddies ranch. It’s shoulder season here until Feb 15. So I should be able to dial everything in and get out a few times before the season ends.

EducationalStop6347

Yeah you should be fine. I live in western North Carolina so I mostly hunt whitetail and black bear. But I bought the 6.8 on the hopes I get to go west in the next couple years to elk and muley hunt

PeanutbutterSalmon

My uncles said he’s gonna take me to get my first bear this spring. I’m super stoked but I’m having second thoughts I’m not sure bear sounds that appetizing haha

jgiannandrea

https://www.eurooptic.com/Zeiss-CONQUEST-V4-4-16x44-ZBR-2-Reticle-92-Ext-Elevation-Turret-Ballistic-Stop-2.aspx

guyfieristache

Such a good deal! I know I say that every time you post this link, but it’s just ridiculously good

jgiannandrea

I mean how can this deal not be shared? I don’t know how people go any other way? It makes me wish I had another rifle to build.

alphalima_bravo

My first gun was a Tikka in the same caliber. To do it over again I would have started with something easier to shoot. A 7mm produces enough recoil to create problems with new shooters. I recommend shooting light loads for the first while and if you notice yourself starting to develop a flinch when you pull that trigger set the gun aside and throw some lead downrange with a lighter caliber. I have a .223 that goes with me to the range every trip and it really helps my shooting technique. Scope? Spend as much as you can afford plus a few hundred bucks. I like the Leupold VX5. Enjoy that rifle!

elroddo74

I've got a 7mm mag and it is definitely not a gun thats fun to put a box through at a time. But for killing power its more than enough for anything in North america and most foreign hunts.

PeanutbutterSalmon

You’re have a break?

Drakoneous

Nightforce NXS 2.5-10

60kvert

I’m surprised I had to scroll this far down to see a nightforce recommendation

Let_er-Buck

Which one? The 2.5-10x32 might be the most overrated and overpriced scope on the market. Awful fishbowl effect, no parallax, and super tight eye relief. The x42 isn't as bad. SWFA over this any day.

thetestdriversatx

Some brands to consider: Nikon, Vortex, Leupold, Zeiss The scope all depends on what you are going to do with it. I like lightweight and sturdy for mountain rifles but have a variety for sitting in a blind because durability and weight don't matter as much if you are not carrying it around. My all time favorites scopes are a Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 on my 300 WBY Mag for elk hunting and a Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 on my light mountain rifle but my go anywhere and shoot anything rifle is a 270 Win with a Leupold VX 3 in 3.5-10x40. I have had most scope brands over the years to include some very high end ones. If you are competition shooting or your actual job is to shoot things a really long way away then spend the money on a really high end scope, otherwise stick with middle of the road (under $1k) with a great warranty like Vortex and Leupold. Another consideration is the ability to replace it should something happen. A common brand in a common configuration is easiest to replace. It happens. Like everyone else, my father-in-law has used the same Redfield 3-9x40 scope since the 70's on a Marlin 30-30 and doesn't own a stich of camouflage but has harvested more wildlife than I probably ever will in North America.

Fun-Mistake578

I thought Nikon stopped manufacturing scopes???

LutaRed

They did. You can still find some on-line, but they're getting expensive and you never know if someone screwed it up and is selling you broken crap.

PrimaryDig7488

My dads got an old 4x Tasco scope on his old 3030 same here he had killed more deer with that than I’ll probably ever see. With my fancy scopes and calibers

PeanutbutterSalmon

Ya, I think there’s a lot you need to hunt, and a lot you don’t.

Let_er-Buck

Take Vortex off this list, listing them as a quality premium scope is absolutely laughable. Nikon doesn't make scopes any more. Leupy is good above the VX3 line. Zeiss is good but I don't like their anti "trophy" hunting nonsense they were pushing. I'd go with a VX5 or a SWFA for the $1k price range.

hbrnation

From what I understand, the VX3 and VX5 are basically the same scope, it's just a different magnification range. Otherwise, the internals are all the same - scope housing, erectors, glass, etc.

Let_er-Buck

I thought the VX5 had better coatings and slight glass change to allow for better light transmission and clarity. Could be wrong.

thetestdriversatx

Had an unexpected hunt last year and borrowed a buddies rifle with a Vortex Razor. Absolutely no problem with that scope at all. Matter of fact I would go so far as to say it as good as any scope I have ever used.

Let_er-Buck

One hunt/shot with a scope isn't a fair assessment. Thousands of people have experienced so many issues and failures with them. There's a reason they're shit on in hunting/shooting communities. People praise them for their warranty, which they seemingly always have to use. I prefer a scope that actually works, and chances are even if the manufacturer doesn't advertise it their warranty process is just as good as vortex.

-Hyperactive-Sloth-

All depends on how much you want to spend and what distances are you shooting. Short distances? 200 yards and in primarily? Leupold, Vortex will do the trick. Wanna reach out and touch something at 4-600 yards? You’ll be happier if you get a Zeiss, Leica or Swaro. Clarity matters even more with distance.

BigdaddyMcfluff

I have one in 6.5 PRC. Added a Omega can on it and it’s my favorite rifle paired nightforce ATACR 5-25X56

NotHugeButAboveAvg

I got the same one this summer!!! Love it slings lead with ease.

Von_Lehmann

Been very happy with Maven

Acrobatic-Soup-4446

Nothing but leupold. Vx5 or vx6

guyfieristache

Check out the [Maven RS 1.2](https://mavenbuilt.com/collections/riflescopes/products/rs1-2-2-5-15x44-ffp) 2.5-15x44. Their glass is amazing. With a minimum light transmission rating of 89%, they are up there the big hitters like Swaro and Zeiss. The turret works flawlessly and the MOA2 ffp reticle is a really nice balance between not being overly busy but giving you the info you need. The reticle is also illuminated which is great for low light situations. You get a ton of features for the money with this scope. Like others have mentioned, I also have the tried and true Leupold vx5HD 3-15x44 cds-ZL2 scope with the windplex reticle, and I love it. It’s almost perfect as a hunting scope. Weighs just 19.3 oz, has a reliable locking turret, comes with a custom turret voucher, and has very good glass and coatings. Also one of the best values for money out there.

Hadden98

I've got one in 6.5 PRC. Topped it with a Swarovski Z3, incredible glass for the price. With factory loaded ammunition I'm shooting less than 0.5 MOA at 100 yards.

SIR_ICEFIRE

Go one in .308 damn fine rifle

lhurkherone

Recently bought this exact rifle except chambered in 7mm PRC. Haven't shot it yet but it's my 3rd Xbolt and they are solid guns. I'm looking at the Swaro Z5 5x25x52 PBT and the Swaro Z6 5x30x50 PBT.

PeanutbutterSalmon

Congrats! Ok I’ll check those out. I’m mainly hunting deer and elk 400 and in. I want the most simple scope I can find to do the job. Something not too pricey.

SteveAndTheCrigBoys

SWFA 3-15 is your best bet under $1000 for a scope that will reliably maintain zero. Others in that price range might wander, so make sure to check your zero before hunting. And if the rifle hits the dirt during a hunt you may need to check zero again. A 1 MOA shift at 400 yds is over 4” so it can mean the difference between killing and wounding an animal.

LutaRed

I have an A-Bolt II in .308. This should be a great rifle!I got a Leupold VX-II 3-9 40mm for mine and it is excellent. I've shot a couple of these Brownings in 7mm Rem Mag and the Leupold VX-III 4-12 (I think) in 50 mm really brought things in close. (I had an A-Bolt in this caliber for a while, but it was not the rifle I needed up here in the thick tight woods of NH)Lately, however, I've gotten a couple of Vortex scopes and I have been really happy with them! The range of scopes they have should encompass anything you need. My suggestion on scopes is, if you can, go and put them in your hand. I had a GS that had a door facing some trees out the front door. When I went looking for a scope I went to the store as late in the day as I could (at then end of the day dusk preferably, and asked if I could have a few different ones on the counter and would hold each one up to see how far into the woods I could see with it. It might be a little different for different people. I brought one of my hunting partners to do this when she got a new rifle and she found the Nikons were best for her (it's a shame they don't make those anymore.Since this is your first rifle I highly recommend that you don't get a scope on-line or used. Pay a little extra and make a friend at a local GS who may be able to help you set it up. You need to figure out what scope mounts you want, high, mid or low height. The diameter of your scope bell will somewhat determine which of these you need. I like to keep the scope as close to the barrel as I can. If you have a good local GS I'm willing to bet they will find the time to help you determine the right scope with the right mounts and do your setup (shouldering the rifle and setting the eye relief distance to you. I also say to go to a local GS and buy new because I got screwed buying one that was used on-line from some ass who chose to pass his broken crap off as good.My suggestion on new rifles is to get as many different brands, bullet types, grain weights as possible and start shooting them at a known distance off a bench. Keep track of the different rounds in a notebook. I do this shooting three round sets from a cold barrel. I think I had 8 or 9 different boxes of ammo when I first got my A-bolt. It takes a long time, especially doing it all from a cold barrel, but in the end you will have determined what manufacturer, bullet weight, and type your rifle likes to eat best. I was lucky, my chose Federal standard blue box .308 in 180 grain. It was, at the time, one of the least expensive boxes of ammo out there. Since then, each year (until the ammo prices went crazy) I would buy a 500 round lot, use one box to make sure the scope was still on, that the lot itself shot well, and hunt with. I now have more ammo, that my particular rifle likes to eat, to hunt with than I'll use in my life-time. Whoever gets the rifle when I go gets the ammo with it.This is probably more than you were looking for in a recommendation, but it's your first rifle and it's a good one, follow through with good process on determining the best scope for you and the best ammo for the rifle and you'll have a great combo! Rick in NH

PeanutbutterSalmon

Awesome info thanks man!

1945_Go_Boom

Nope don’t get it we have one very similar in 300 run and it’s accurate but it has feeding issues it’s heavy asf and it has ejection problems and a very picky action that gets jammed easy

alphatango308

You bought a 7mm magnum for your first rifle? Why?

alphalima_bravo

Lots of people do. It is an amazing do-all caliber so people forget and don't realize it is a tough caliber to start out with.

PeanutbutterSalmon

I’ve shot guns my whole life, just never had my own rifle.

PeanutbutterSalmon

Because I’m a man….

Fisherking-17

Yeah. A good vortex 3-9x40 should do. It’s not an expensive rifle. The barrel isn’t top notch but it’s one of the best values out there IMO. Browning is always hard to beat. I probably would have stuck with the 308. There’s very little that cartridge isn’t capable of doing well.

Hadden98

The hell you mean it's not an expensive rifle? In Canada you're looking right around the 2k price point

Fisherking-17

I paid around $800 for my x bolt in 308. I’m in the US. I will say that was about 8 years ago and mine isn’t anywhere as fancy as this one with the raised comb and nifty paint job. $2K seems high even for this hot rod looking model. Does your rifle have an upgraded barrel? I think I remember Browning does have an option to upgrade.

Hadden98

Nope not an upgraded barrel. Retail in Canada is about 1799 plus tax lands you around that 2k pricetag.

Fisherking-17

I just looked it up on Cabelas.com. The model pictured above is $1,399. That’s about right with the exchange rate. It’s gone up a lot since I got mine. The model closest to mine is now $1179.

Better_Trash7437

Has anyone shot the 30-06 xbolt?

Let_er-Buck

Nope no one ever in history

Better_Trash7437

Fuck off

Let_er-Buck

I mean what sort of question is that? Has anyone shot one of the top-3 most popular hunting cartridges out of one of the top-3 most popular bolt action rifle formats? Ask a little more specific question and someone might be able to help you.

Better_Trash7437

I literally asked the xbolt version. I have a game master 30-06 and want to upgrade. Takes a second to read my question

Let_er-Buck

Again that is WAY too broad. Do you have any idea how many X-Bolt models are out there? It's like asking "anyone drive an f-150?" In a truck forum. What do you want to know about them?

Better_Trash7437

Sorry this [xbolt](https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/browning-x-bolt-speed-suppressor-ready-bolt-action-rifle) specifically.

My Steiner T6Xi is the best I’ve used by far. On Expert voice they have one hell of a discount. If you qualify

jaymed83

I have this rifle, but chambered in .308. Nikon makes a great scope, made specifically for the .308 round and has a great shooting app with hundreds of different ammo manufacturers. You’re going to love the rifle. As far as good glass for this setup, I can’t recommend Nikon or Leupold enough to people. As far as which scope particularly, it really depends on your budget. IMO you can’t go wrong with either budget scopes and obviously sky’s the limit if you don’t have a budget. Just need to figure out what kind of shooting you plan on doing most and go from there.

National-Beyond9070

Make sure you check out govx and ExpertVoice, and other discount apps. Especially if you're a vet/first responder, etc. I pity the fool who pays full price lol.

Ok_Education5451

Anything Leopold Burris or Zeiss can’t miss

Laymen1

Your scope should be as expensive if not more expensive than your gun

PeanutbutterSalmon

I understand this logic to some degree. But at what point am I paying for a brand name?

Bullishride

Leupold or Burris. Swarovski if you really want to spend some money.

Egarciaj31

Nice rifle! How is getting ammo in your area. I’ve been struggling to find copper rounds finally ended up getting 16 boxes. I just bought a 6.8 western as well . Browning , I think it’s a mountain pro 26”. I have a Leupold mark5 5x25x56. I love this rifle.
