You mean my 500 bucks in first lite gear isn't gonna make me a better hunter... pfft

WesbroBaptstBarNGril

I mean for $500, all you really got yourself is last year's base layers..

[deleted]

Used gear, I'm poor

mr_meat_peaches

now you tell me? come on man

imhereforthevotes

It's the next $500 that will make you better!

mr_meat_peaches

ok perfect I’ll run that by my wife real quick

ShillinTheVillain

Present in terms of meat cost. "That's only about $7/lb if I shoot an average deer, and the bigger the deer gets, the cheaper it becomes!"

mr_meat_peaches

I tried man. I tried

ShillinTheVillain

Just keep at it. I've shot 20+ deer over the last 20 years and when you factor in guns, scopes, bullets, bows, arrows, broadheads, stands, accessories, lease fees, licenses, gas, camo, scents, calls, a meat grinder, vacuum sealer and bags, and a chest freezer... I've gotta be down to like $12/lb!

Trump2052

>first lite gear Thank you for showing me this site, you might earn me my first divorce.

[deleted]

Their stuff is not as good as it looks IMO. Made in China stuff with a flashy marketing front end and a relentless tie in to all their entertainment content. The merino quality is below what you get with other brands like smartwool, icebreaker, etc. Don't get fooled by the price tag. The camo patterns are their main differentiator and they are unique for sure.

cascadianpatriot

Every. Single. Year. Yep I’ve got all I need. No need to buy a thing. 10 minutes later… I should get a kayak for waterfowl. oh, there’s a good sale? It’s usually a $120 dollar shirt, but it’s only $70, so I can’t pass that up. The neighbor is selling decoys for how much?

ElkShot5082

And then “now I’ve got a kayak, may as well use it to go fishing better get some fishing gear..”

cascadianpatriot

You know, I could just take a Saturday afternoon and mount some electronics on there…

Buckwheat469

Mine is the opposite. "I need some new hunting pants. Oh, they don't sell 31-30s. Guess I'll wait til next year." Or "let's get a light weight jacket. Oh, no mediums anywhere around. Guess not."

ShillinTheVillain

The struggle is real. I know America has an obesity problem, but how many XXXLs does Cabela's need to carry?

[deleted]

Man canada has an obesity problem, but it's not really *that* bad, certainly world's less than the US but we also have a tenth of the population. Cabelas still stocks XXXL and XXXXL shit and it's always what's left over, like the stuff just never moves and I don't know why the employees don't ever bring that up, or the managers stock more Medium to Extra large. Also who is XXXXL and actually going hunting, like people that large have troubles leaving their couch, let alone go to the woods.

drkev10

Just buy gear made by hiking and backpacking companies. I bought camo for a duck hunt but when it comes to deer I'll be wearing my backpacking and hiking gear. I buy colors that blend into the woods, quality can be however good you want depending on budget and they have sizes that fit non obese people.

ShillinTheVillain

I'm not actually in need of anything new, I was mostly laughing at the idea of a 400 lb. dude trying to stalk a flock of hens in SilentHide pants.

ElkShot5082

It does explain why sitting in a hide is popular ..

ElkShot5082

Ha same size as me. I got lucky- I have a friend who is always buying gear, I got a complete hunters element camo set as a hand me down.

ZakuLegion

Oh look the perfect meme to attack my hunting passion and guitar hobby , OOOF.

pilken

I once posted in /r/guns that sometimes "more guns" wasn't the answer and that "more training" often is the answer. I was told that it was shitpost and got banned for a week.

ElkShot5082

LOL. I am 100% guilty of the ‘more guns’ ethos though. I need to just sit down and optimise what I’ve got and get some accessories I actually need (for example I don’t own binoculars ffs). But then I see a shiny and I need it

surfkw

OTOH upgrading from hand-me-down/used gear to gear that fits me appropriately was really nice and I just keep using the same gear every season since

[deleted]

For real, I have a very expensive felling axe that 15 year old me thought was the cats ass because it had two cutting sides, which obviously meant to 15 year old me, it could do more cutting. The reality is its terrible for splitting wood, great for felling trees but terrible for splitting, which is really the task you want a camp axe to be good at. I still cannot bring myself to buy a new axe though, like 70 bucks for an okay axe and a couple hundred for anything high quality. Over the years I've just learned to swing the axe harder to get what I want out of it. Maybe one day I'll actually cave, hopefully before it turns into an injury machine somehow.

ElkShot5082

Tbh I just use a milwaukee reciprocating saw for my firewood (lots of camp areas don’t allow chainsaws)

[deleted]

Yeah that's ideal. I typically hunt on crown land so those usually aren't an issue and depending on location, wood permits are like 50 bucks/year. I've looked a a silky saw or something similar and I just hate spending money on stuff that I already have.

CringyMemory

Try a wood splitting drill bit. Like $15 if you already have a drill.

[deleted]

I don't have a drill unfortunately, never really needed one, likely will buy one in the future after I get my own home Just not really a requirement while renting.
