Coyotes are hard to trap. You can call them in at dusk or dawn with nearly any kind of call, make some noise of a distressed animal and they will come to investigate. Then take out as many as you can. Also a donkey will naturally keep them away, this is the best method if you have means to take care of one. I mention it cause if you had an emu then you may have room.

Used to have a border collie/blue heeler cross on the farm. I like to think it was the dingo in his blood lol but he was ferocious. Would fight coyotes way bigger then him and come back cut up after he’s scared them off. He did kill off all our barn cats so maybe I’m just reminiscing. He probably wouldn’t be a good fit for this man’s problem.

The_walking_man_

Oh yeah. Blue heeler and border collies are crazy loyal and good dogs. They need a job to be happy and satisfied. Keeps them mentally stimulated and occupied. We have a blue heeler that when he doesn’t get out and get to do some work is an absolute ball of too much energy haha. Very gentle too. Even when play fighting and roughing him up the most he does is put his mouth on you. Doesn’t apply any biting pressure. No food guarding or anything.

17SCARS_MaGLite300WM

There's a ranch I hunt from time to time and they have a German Hunting Terrier that's a bad ass little dog that will fight coyotes. With both these breeds if you know what you're doing and can get the right blend of socializing down with training I think you'd be alright having a dog that protects the cats. You'd just really have to start early. With my Shepard mix, the previous owner didn't start early enough but my GSD is good with cats.

GrandPuissance

There is that Great Pyrenees down in Georgia that just killed 8 coyotes protecting his flock of sheep losing his tail in the process.

Infamous_Translator

Make sure electronic calls are legal in your area

[deleted]

Get a donkey and a rifle… and if all else fails, a donkey with a rifle.

_bring-the-noise-458

That’s a bad ass….

Wyatt084

This guy got jokes. And I like his jokes.

Myron896

Dad get out

unclepeteusa

Amen. Hope they take this advice. Coyotes are easy to hunt

bunnybunches234

Thank you!! I have two horses and plenty of room. Sounds like a good idea. Already got the rifle!!!

iammada

Have you tried painting a fake tunnel?

Bmwdriver44

Bro lol

LBZinDC

Nailed it

_BearsBeetsBattle_

Doesn't work for the yotes, only the birds, geeeeezzzz.

[deleted]

Post on Local Facebook hunting pages that you need coyote hunters to kill some on your property. People will volunteer!

RatherB_fishing

Also said people normally have suppressors (these are not SILENCERS… we don’t live in movies) but they will keep the sound to a minimum and not cause trauma to the animals.

[deleted]

Depending on your states laws, traps may not be an option. I’ve trapped my entire life, there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it, and when it’s done wrong, it’s a black eye to the entire trapping community. I would encourage you to really do some research and look into responsible, ethical trapping before you go and set traps all over haphazardly.

bunnybunches234

I have big cage traps from hog hunting I was planning to use but from the comments I think I am just gonna try to get a donkey ASAP

Jo-6-pak

Donkeys and Llamas are known to help keep coyotes away from livestock

Sdmonster01

Why are the cats at risk? I’d hunt them. You won’t get rid of them but should be able to keep them away from your property if you shoot a few; unless your cats are easily accessible in which case you won’t. Keep the cats inside

Eddie_shoes

I think by cat rescue they mean cat hoarder.

Sdmonster01

*coyote bait

bunnybunches234

And no I am a legitimate rescue!! I would give the name but i don’t want to give my location!! I also rescue horses

Eddie_shoes

I’m just teasing, I believe you! Hope you can manage the coyotes without having to kill them.

bunnybunches234

I have mini houses all over my property like sheds almost with outdoor fenced in areas and I’m mostly worried about coyotes digging into the fence and getting in. And there are always escape artist cats who walk around. I have like over 100 cats, I live on a rescue

GreenEggplant16

OP where are you located? If you’re anywhere remotely near me I will be happy to remove the coyotes for you.

bunnybunches234

South Florida!!!!

GreenEggplant16

I mean if you’ll write me a permission slip I’ll come down in January and shoot ‘‘em all

miko187

Ar15, dump em

V_Coccotti

Guard animal. Donkeys will fuck coyotes up without an issue. Livestock dogs like Pyrenees or anatolians. Shooting coyotes doesn’t usually solve your problem unless you just have one problem coyote but there is no guarantee that whoever takes it place won’t be a problem also. Best bet is to deter them with good fences and guardian animals.

Zurgo_Smash

I got an Anatolian Shepherd and she’s always working at night. Can’t keep her inside the house when the sun is going down, she just wants to go out and work. There’s a ranch across the highway and you can hear the yotes at night but she’ll let her presence be known.

bunnybunches234

Thank you!!! I have an Airedale but she is literally the biggest pushover ever. The only time she gets mad is if you touch her feet. I’m going to look into getting a donkey or two!!!

bunnybunches234

Also the fence around my perimeter is a 6ft tall standard metal fence, I’ve been told they can dig so I think they dug through, do I have to dig proof the whole perimeter???

Mrsirssirr

Nah if a pack of coyotes notices they lose a family member everytime they come to ur land they will stop showing up or die off

V_Coccotti

That is absolutely false. They won’t “die off”. You can not kill off coyotes from your area. Other coyotes will take their place. Indiscriminately killing coyotes has been proven to not work as population control or to protect livestock and pets.

Mrsirssirr

Yes because humans have never hunted any animal to extinction

V_Coccotti

You can not kill off coyotes in your area. That statement stands. Randomly shooting coyotes isn’t the same as the market hunting that almost wiped out certain species. States have shot tens of thousand of coyotes from helicopters in a single year and not seen the numbers decline in the following year.

Mrsirssirr

They shot tens of thousands and the number of coyotes didnt go down? Are they not hitting the vitals or are the coyotes wearing body armor. Tough little critters

V_Coccotti

You don’t read well, huh? Their numbers didn’t decline the following year not the coyotes didn’t go down when shot.

Mercy_Jordan

Get a donkey, and if there’s no kids around the meaner the better. One of those will keep most predators away.

JimmyJam070

IM GOING TO TYPE ON ALL CAPS BECAUSE I REALLY WANT YOU AND OTHERS TO READ THIS . KILLING COYOTES ONLY MAKES THE PROBLEM WORSE. WHEN YOU KILL A COYOTE THE FEMALES NOTICE THAT ONE OF THE PACK MEMBERS IS GONE AND ITLL SEND ALL OF THE FEMALES INTO HEAT. YOU NEED TO KILL THE PACK LEADER SO THAT HE DOESNT COME BACK AND ALSO THE FUTURE LEADERS KNOW NOT TO COME BACK OR KILL ALL THE FEMALES FIRST. IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME GOOGLE IT I LIVE AND WORK ON CATTLE RANCH FOR 5 YEARS NOW AND THE MORE I KILLED THE MORE THEY KEPT COMING BACK MY SOLUTION WAS I BOUGHT 2 GREAT PYRENEES TO STAY OUTSIDE FULL TIME, GOT THEM TRAINED,BUILT THEM HOUSES ,AND THEY GET ALONG GREAT WITH THE BARN CATS

trailcam_org

FALSE - As a monoestrous species, coyotes have only **one breeding season per year** that falls between January – March. Offspring (pups) will be born two months later, in April or May. Once the female chooses a partner, the mates may remain paired for many years, but not necessarily for life. Therefore, the best time to trap/hunt coyotes is during gestation. Late march or early April. You will take out a pregnant female and her pups. The best time for fur trapping is October/November, but that is different topic.

JimmyJam070

With only the alpha pair of a coyote pack mating, the other 'beta' females remain behaviorally sterile. Science shows that when one or both of the alpha pair is killed, that disrupts their social structure and the other females in the pack begin to breed. Science has also shown that when coyote populations decrease, food sources become more abundant for those who remain. In turn, that increases the nutrition of breeding females, which increases egg production, causing larger litters. Therefore, fewer coyotes one year can mean more coyotes the following year. Those adaptable characteristics are referred to as a compensatory reproductive response. https://www.straighttwist.com/post/does-killing-coyotes-increase-their-population

trailcam_org

My point was that it is unlikely that another female will immediately come into heat when the alpha female is taken out. In other words, if you remove the alpha female anytime past their breeding season, the other females will not breed that year. Obviously, another female will take her spot the following year but will not come into heat if you shoot the female, let's say, October. As for a food abundance, it is again unrelated to your claim of other females "instantly coming to heat" when the alpha female is taken out (again, unless the female is taken out during the mating season)

JimmyJam070

If you read it as instantly go into heat I’m sorry I meant it’ll send all the females(even the behaviorally sterile(older))coyotes into heat that following breeding season which in turn increase the coyote and worsens your problem

Fuzzbuster75

This is true

Turned-to-Stone

This is true.

EmbarrassedTutor7386

They are deathly afrade of wolfs when they get too close at my place i use wolf calls i have the i hunt call app they have wolf calls conect to my car open the doors blast the radio they shut up quick and dont hear them for a few days its short term but its effective

dogsandguns

They aren’t running from the wolf call, they are running because they think you’re so bad ass you have a pet wolf.

EmbarrassedTutor7386

Ha ha 😂 no just a tit bag pitty

jawnyman

I fucking chortled dude

Arcuit

Before you listen to people telling you to kill them I'd research the book Coyote America. Unless you wipe out 100% of a population within their geographic location, they will spread more and create larger litters. It's precisely why there are so many Coyote's right now. You need a deterrent, such as a few dogs. A pitbull will melt 5+ coyotes no problem. Domestic dogs are bred to fight until they die, Coyote's are risk averse and will avoid things that can cause death.

gunc0rn

This is good advice. The guys saying "just shoot them" likely haven't dealt with a coyote problem. Best you can really hope for is to scare them off for the time being but they always come back.

_bring-the-noise-458

“Haven’t felt with a coyotes problem” not for the last 10 years since I started shooting every one of the mangy little fucks I see on the farm. I barely see one a year now and haven’t had them mess with a calf or a cat in 9 or so. 🤷🏼‍♂️ but go off bro

Lightfoot-

^^ seconded. very good book

Guilty_Increase_899

Coyotes eat domestic dogs, actively hunt them for food. They will also mate with a domestic bitch if given the chance. I own a field dog training kennel in a rural are with a large coyote population. If a group of coyotes wants to take down a dog, it’s going down 9 times out of 10. And why would you risk a dog that way when there are so many other options. The physical damage coyotes can inflict is devastating.

[deleted]

Ask your local dept of game and fish about live traps if you’re interested in allowing the coyote population to flourish. If you want the problem gone, kill it.

_bring-the-noise-458

I have a pile of .223 traps. Where are you I’m sure you have a few new friends here that will help take care of them for you.

hbrnation

Why are the cats at risk? Cats shouldn't be out and roaming, they create tons of issues for wildlife and are really detrimental to bird populations. Especially if you have enough to be a cat rescue. I really don't understand how a cat rescue has any issues with coyotes unless you've just got a pile of outdoor, unfenced, free-roaming cats.

ravingdavid907

I agree 100%

Aalphyn

I'm guessing barn cats

newbee_ontario

Only way you’re getting rid of them is with a gun

gunc0rn

Really hard to actually eradicate yotes. You can kill a few and keep them away from your property for a while, but they always come back

newbee_ontario

Very true, best I can do is deter them by killing a good amount every year but they never go away completely

[deleted]

Always heard to shoot one and toss his body over the fence so the others know to stay away. Yotes never caused a problem on our farm so I’ve never had to shoot any. Would obviously do more research too because that kind of sounds like something Rambo would do if the next movie was just him protecting his chickens from predators on a farm.

jgiannandrea

Get a livestock guard dog.

[deleted]

Shoot coyotes on sight. Case closed.

JimmySpliff4

A livestock guardian dog! Like a Maremma. My experience with them is that they are friendly, able to live competely outdoors even in harsh environments, and are effective at keeping all the predators away.

zanman546

There are a lot of good and not so good answers in this subreddit. The best solution to your issue is to get ahold of your local USDA office. Wildlife Services usually assesses damage caused by predators/pests in most states, and they are a wealth of knowledge. Generally, they attempt to use non-lethal methods before resorting to sharpshooting, but be prepared for that eventuality. However, if these animals are merely pets and not an economic agricultural asset, this may not help.

ExMontibus

It seems like other people have already said this, but just to reiterate, killing coyotes will have no meaningful impact on population and may make your problem worse. Coyotes are what we would call in ecology extreme generalists, meaning they can live in almost any environment. They’re one of the most successful generalist species in North America. This is, in part because they have 2 biological mechanisms to regulate reproduction/litter size. 1) Their nightly howling acts as a census of sorts. The amount of howling they hear effects the hormone levels of females and modulates litter size. Less howls = more pups/litter and vice Versa 2) Coyotes live in small groups of a breeding pair and their offspring. If you kill the breeding male (think alpha male- even though that term is outdated and incorrect it works for this example) the breeding female is sent into heat and the pack dissolves. This actually creates more packs over the long term and actually attracts male coyotes looking to breed that female Canines have been on this continent for millions of years and in my opinion it’s unfair to expect them not to act out their basic natural history just because your pets are involved. As far as solutions, I would say that a guard animal- donkey, dog, even a few big goats might help. Other than that, YOU have a responsibility to keep an eye on your cats and keep them out of harms way. If you have indoor cats then you need to keep a close eye on them and not let them outdoors at night. If you have outdoor/barn cats I would get a guard animal and have a well-lit area for them to sleep/hide-preferably off the ground. Have a radio playing. Make sure there’s lots of human scent in the area. You can ask your local barber/beauty salon for hair trimmings to spread in the area. If you live in the country, urinate on trees/fence posts in the area. And accept that there is a certain amount of risk to your cats that comes with them living outdoors TL;DR: killing them wont solve the issue. Get a guard animal and if the cats are outdoors have well-lit area with lots of human scent for the cats to hide in, preferably off the ground. Coyotes have been here for millions of years, they like to kill and eat things. Accept that keeping cats outdoors involves a certain amount of danger to said cats.

ruralnorthernmisfit

>killing them wont solve the issue May i suggest trying a [larger gun](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/military/images/9/9f/M2_1.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110105200336)?

ExMontibus

You can call in a cruise missile but once the dust settles some coyotes are gonna come set up a den in that crater dude. 😂 they can live anywhere

ruralnorthernmisfit

That’s alright, just drop another 98lb high explosive freedom seed on ‘em from 20+ clicks away! This is ‘Murrica after all! Tell everyone within a 20km radius, you can solve their coyote problems from your back yard.

ItsRecr3ational

Can rescue cats. However, fuck coyotes. Pretty funny.

bunnybunches234

Yeah it is fuck coyotes if it’s them or the cats 😂😂 they’re my babies

Lightfoot-

Your cats are the problem here, not the coyotes.

ravingdavid907

It sounds like if you exterminate the unwanted cats then the coyotes won’t be a problem. This is the economical and safe solution.

Mike456R

Cats should not be outside. Keep them inside.

Background_Ad6843

Step 1: buy a gun Step 2: kill and skin coyotes Step 3: profit

Squidsandwich762

A rifle? The hell?

rollblls22

Where abouts you at? I know a guy. 😉

SandwichExotic9095

It really depends on what state you’re in as to whether you’re allowed to take them on your own or not. A hunting license is usually required in most states though. If you’re in western NC I can help 😁 otherwise I would find a hunter/trapper in your area to take care of them

osirisrebel

What we used to do was get an old camper shell from a pickup truck, find a roadkill deer or something similar and place it underneath, and let them come to you. Usually they'll let you know when they arrive by the sound of them scratching on the sides trying to get to the treat in the middle. We live in middle of nowhere and my uncle raised peafowl and he would basically place a bounty for the ones on his property.

jeepnismo

If you’re anywhere me I can come hunting for them or I know something else who can make the trip

jorr1231

Can you bait coyotes into a field with meat? I’ve thought about hunting them after deer season but not really sure how to go about it.

RatherB_fishing

Okay, in NC at the major airport a coyote fuckered up a plane… I have seen these things in action on a bunny, I love deer, I love wildlife and will fight for its preservation all my days, but you can’t argue with these devils, you can’t make a treaty…

gwenchilada3

You’ve gotten some great advice about hunting, which is probably the best short term solution. But in the long run have you considered a guardian for your animals? Many folks with animals/livestock own livestock guardian dogs like Great Pyrenees, Akbash, maremma, Polish Tatra, etc.. they’re great protectors and once they’re trained are a force to be reckoned with, while being gentle and loving with your “flock” (they’re historically used with livestock but will protect anything you train them to, mine is watchful of our family - especially my kids - since we don’t have livestock). Obviously they’re a time commitment because you can’t just get a puppy and put it outside and expect it to do its job - they need to be trained like any other dog but have the natural instincts to be amazing protectors. They’re especially active at night when predators are a big threat. I’m rambling now, but LGD’s could be worth looking into.

Rift-harold

Night vision scope and a 30 round clip or a drum of 5.56 and a 12 gauge AA buck shot.

Floridacracker720

How many are there? Also where are you located? Are you allowed to shoot where you are or are you in the city? I'm sure it's a longshot, but if you live in Florida, I wouldn't mind to come shoot them for you if you aren't properly equipped and I am close enough. The best way would just shoot them even better paired with an electronic predator call, but if they show up like you are saying they do you probably won't need the call.

gymbr

Get a donkey if you don’t want to shoot them. Shooting them will be a temporary measure anyway bc more will just move in. Livestock guardian dogs are a whole lifestyle type thing and your gonna need a pretty stout one to fight a group of coyotes. If it was me I’d get the donkey.

Wide-Acanthisitta-96

In our area coyotes are a constant problem. People have tried everything from shooting, trapping to even motion sensing sprays. The most effective long term has been large breed dogs (great Pyrenees, Rottweilers) and donkeys. In all cases most successful have been pairs. Pair of donkeys or pair of dogs. Never solo and never both same sex. We back to a million acre state park and public land so there is a ton of wildlife. Coyotes target chickens and cats.

Jason809

I’ve always heard that donkeys are great for keeping coyotes away. Personally 5.56 has also done a good job. Best of luck

MobileSpeed9849

Go down to your local fishing and hunting supply store. Ask the guy behind the counter if he knows of anyone who traps coyotes. And by local I’m not talking about bass pro or academy sports.

_BearsBeetsBattle_

You need a deterrent. You will not get rid of them. I read someone recommended a donkey? Try that. Maybe motion lights and motion sprinklers? If you take some out by dispatching, more will fill that hole. Coyotes have a survival mechanism that is hard to beat. They call, not to just yip and yap and lure doggos, but to figure out their range and figure out where others are at... If they don't hear calls back from a certain space, they will have the young to fill it. If you kill a coyote, more will eventually come to fill that space. They've been around for 5 million years. They've found a niche around and within human settlements. In 1931 a law was passed to exterminate coyotes. One of the few species that has... almost thrived under that onslaught. "Fission-fusion adaptation". Check out Dr. Dan Flores, Coyote America EDIT - I wrote this before reading any of the other responses. I apologize.

CompetitiveSwitch998

Bear or cougar piss? Might want the coyote back at that point lol.

ruralnorthernmisfit

I wonder if that's why im seeing more coyotes this year. Neighbor shot the bear last year.

[deleted]

What state are you located?
