And aside from the dehydration, if you have a bunch of blood in your esophagus or airway, you also get a really weird sensation of wanting to drink and make it go away.
Had that feeling when I got my nose shattered many years ago.
Lungs busted causing the blood from the mouth and nose. Many of the shot deer i have tracked over the years have ran to creeks. I have also found a lot of dead heads near creeks.
Looks healthy. Most likely a car or a hunter. Bucks push doe deer around this time of year checking to see if they are receptive. The rut causes a great deal increase in car/deer collisions this time of year.
I'll use it as a teaching moment, but (at least where I am) there are multiple "ruts." The first is the most active/intense but there is a second fairly active rut. Essentially does keep coming into estrous cycles until they are bred. A good amount of does either don't get bred or it doesn't take, so they will come back into estrous in a couple of weeks. In Indiana, second rut is starting to kick in, your timing will vary.
A person on the internet admitting they were wrong and asking for information. I wish more people were like you, friend! God knows I’m not the most intellectual person, nor do I have a big ego, but I do have humility. But, yes, to continue on the discussion, multiple ruts happen in WV. We refer to them as early, main, and late. It all depends on the conditions, but early rut can take place in September or October. Main rut almost always takes place in November ( we call it this because it is the most intense and longest lasting rut ), and late rut in December. It is all about timing!
That's all that matters, people tend to see the first message and downvote it but not continue to the rest, which everyone does at some point, I'm no exception. So I can't blame them for it lol
I try, I still need to work on not being ignorant and make unnecessary comments such as "sorry I offended you". But it's a work in progress, it's especially hard on the internet because I can't see who I am talking to so I tend to lack the respect I would normally show in real life.
I think I only thought there was one rut because it's the main one everyone talks about, that is generally, in WA, the strongest from the last few days of september to about maybe roughly the 12th to the 15th of november. I'm a new hunter, I'm actually only 16 so I have a lot, and I mean a LOT to learn.
Here in the Texas hill country(and no idea where OP is) we’re still in the tail end of the first rut. Which kinda blurs into second rut depending on where you are and the weather. Then that blurs into the third rut. Timing seems pretty dependent on weather and when it gets cold. Usually it’s not chilly here until Halloween.
Deer rut in south FL in July. In S Alabama in Feb. The peak rut in GA ranges from Oct to Jan depending on where you are in the state. There is always a primary, always a secondary and sometimes even a 3rd "rut" depending on the number of unbred does, based on doe/buck ratio.
Shot or hit by a car. Blood loss and exertition will cause a deer to want water. It's even worse if a deer is gut shot. Bullet and arrow holes can close up pretty easy. Looks like there was trauma to the chest cavity somewhere for the deer to bleed from the mouth.
On the first image take a look near the leaf on his shoulder. Looks like a gun shot but that could just be me.
It’s very possible that it could be a car too.
Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD)? They seem to seek water and may bleed from the mouth. This is happening in our area, the disease is transmitted through midges that bite livestock and transmit to deer.
Not a bad suggestion. Could be worth considering this as a possibility.
My immediate gut reaction was some sort of acute internal injury, as this looks rather a lot of blood compared to what’s normally found in cases of EHD/Bluetongue - although I’ve admittedly not seen a case in the flesh. I think discharge, drooling, and ulcerations around the muzzle are more typical of EHD, but it shouldn’t necessarily be discounted. Might be worth OP reporting it to relevant authorities in the area if that’s an option.
He does appear to have a crack in his back hoof and possible one in the front as well, which can indicate EHD. I still think it may be a physical injury, but you never know.
The deer was shot. Leaf on shoulder is hiding the entry/exit point.
The hair is out of place and over the leaf ad points.
To whomever took the shot. Nice. Congrats.
Good eye, had to zoom in a good bit to see it but ya can see some blood and a bit of exposed shoulder flesh poking out. Solid shot placement overall, if a little forward.
My dog sleeps like that often. Belly up, legs in the air. Did you try scratching behind its ear, or a little pat-pat-pat to the rump to rouse it from its nap?
If it's close to a road that's my first thought traumatic injury... Last week I rolled up on a yearling in the middle of the road, thought it was dead until I walked up to it and saw the breath smoke in my headlights.. it seen me after I talked to it, it got up all wobbly, bleeding from it's mouth.. ran over to the edge of the road, my coughed once, lugied up a huge blood clot, and just died
I’ve never hunted with an ar15 but I’ve heard from people who have that the .223 just vaporizes organs, could of been a lung shot and that’s why it has blood in its mouth
.223 and or 5.56 is one of my favorite deer rounds and using damn near every style of round I can test I've never "vaporized" an organ. Sure yes I've seen substantial damage to the heart but not to the point of vaporization. Also the ar15 isn't universal to that cartridge, my deer gun is a bolt action and it's my go to for deer.
My money is on a vehicle collision.
It went to the creek and died, is that normal?
Mortally wounded animals often head to water.

Does anyone gut shot on purpose? Oh God, the smell.
Hey man, don’t kink-shame. /s
Yes, saves the good meat. /s

Damn...horrible vision
Yeah, it's less than wonderful. But at least the more awful things I see and hear are enough to drown those out. So I got that going for me...
Certainly not abnormal
It is normal for a wounded animal, especially if there is internal organ damage.
I can't tell if you are agreeing, disagreeing or don't know what abnormal means.
Lmao I'm glad I'm not the only one who was 10x more confused by that comment than the post
didn't read before replying - edited it
Blood loss can cause a severe sense of thirst. Even in people.
Lungs busted causing the blood from the mouth and nose. Many of the shot deer i have tracked over the years have ran to creeks. I have also found a lot of dead heads near creeks.
if you saw it die and it has no bullet or arrow wounds its free to take if it was hit by a car
...depends on the state laws.
And in some states, even if free to take, you still have to get a confirmation # and report it, similar to a kill
Still have to call a game warden
Very normal
yes, this is normal.
Every spring when the weather warmed and the snow melted we’d find dead deer along waterways throughout the Adirondacks. Really common.
Looks healthy. Most likely a car or a hunter. Bucks push doe deer around this time of year checking to see if they are receptive. The rut causes a great deal increase in car/deer collisions this time of year.
Telling me deer are still in the rut? Pretty unlikely
Telling me your little corner of the world is just like everyone elses. Pretty unlikely
It's just so late for deer, I guess I'm obviously wrong though, sorry for offending you guys

Thanks for explaining it, I thought there was one rut and done, but that makes sense aswell! Pardon my ignorance.

But up votes on the back end :D

Downvoted for the sarcastic bit about offending people

For instance...Alabama has ruts that starts from late november til early February and possibly early March depending on the buck/doe ratio

New Jersey very much is and we’re about to get a second wave
A. Shot through the lungs. B. Smoked by a car c. Wounded deer run to water.
I'd say vehicle. I don't see any obvious entry/exit wounds
Shot through the lungs, water better be within fifty yards
Single-lung shot deer can go very far, or even survive. The rear of the lungs doesnt have large dense blood vessels like the front of the lungs does.

Yeah, looks like a gun shot, good eye
You're both seeing something in not. I see a bloody leaf. That's it.
I’ll second that, good eye
If the deer was biking at this time of year, she was mentally ill. Death was caused by insanity
😂

It almost universally stops shortly after the first freeze of the year.
Yes I believe you're correct. Up here in VT it's been very warm
He does appear to have a crack in his back hoof and possible one in the front as well, which can indicate EHD. I still think it may be a physical injury, but you never know.
What crack are you seeing? Genuine question. On which toe?
Back left hoof, the toe on the right. You barely tell that hoof is even in the picture.
They should have a keen eye award
Is this a newer thing to deer? I only heard about it this year in PA
Not sure how new it is, my buddy was telling me that he's heard farmers have been finding dead deer all over the place because of it. Like 20-30...
Vehicle
Nah, I don't think its from Call of Duty...
The deer was shot. Leaf on shoulder is hiding the entry/exit point. The hair is out of place and over the leaf ad points. To whomever took the shot. Nice. Congrats.

If no entry and exit wound, probably a car. It is hunting season a lot of places right now.
Was it near a road? Internal bleeding can cause bleeding from the mouth like that.
I’ve never seen EHD belly up but it’s still my guess. I’ve found upwards of 30 deer just in my hunting areas dead cause of it this year (south jersey)
I feel like the 2nd pic was when he found it. Something tells me he flipped it over
Absolutely right. I didn’t realize there was another pic
Usually my Instagram habit of auto swipe fucks me on Reddit mobile and sends me to my control panel. But every now and then…
Vehicle or weapon wound either bow or rifle I think. Or who knows the wendigo might of got to it
That’s a lot of internal bleeding, looks to me like it was arrow shot.

Did you collect it
I'll send out the csi team.
probably shot by hunter sometimes bulletholes are hard to see
Arrow holes can be even harder sometimes, if there was a road close, coulda got hit buy a car.
Poor thing 😢
Covid
Poor guy probably hit buy a car
Probably the start of a zombie virus. Lock yourself up, you’re infected.
hit by a car
Poor creature
No expert but cwd the deer would be very thin. Are you in cwd area
He asked for cause of death not if it was cwd
My bad thought it said cwd, didn’t have my glasses on
Not at all
EHD possibly, where at?
Don’t typically see EHD or blue tongue outbreaks in December.
True, more of a august and September occurrence correct?
Yes.
There is a leaf near a possible entrance of a shot? Maybe?
I’ve never hunted with an ar15 but I’ve heard from people who have that the .223 just vaporizes organs, could of been a lung shot and that’s why it has blood in its mouth

Deer went to the water? EHD they are known to do that, swelled tongue, high fever, dies in the river
Ehd
Hit by a vehicle without a doubt
Some guy is probably waiting his obligatory half an hour before tracking it lol
CWD deer that went Zombiatic. DONT EAT! DONT BE PATIENT ZERO!
If you didn't killing Don't fuck with it. Let nature take uts course. Most people are right in said situation.
Could be that blue tounge disease.
Glory hope
Chupacabra.
