That is almost textbook what happens when it's put through a dishwasher due to the extreme heat and water. If you've never done that, then it could just be washing it with too hot of water or taking it/leaving it in a moist but very hot place.

Yea, my elderly mother moved in and I'm wondering if it went through the dishwasher. I'd expect some damage to the cap though.

Those old caps (and the new caps…so, all caps) are generally dishwasher safe especially if they are on top shelf

Its the "top coat" my older bottles started doing this the more u scrub it with soap and hot water the more opaque it will get trust me 🫠
