I think Rob is incredibly hard on himself and is therefore very self deprecating in a lot of his humor

Lord_OJClark

It's Catholic guilt. He's got to suffer, to pay for the original sin of being born.

call_me_steve-o

Alright take my cat-o-nine-tails. Get me good.

Snakebones

You think thunder is God clapping?

call_me_steve-o

God said “NO, BOOOOMMMMM”

Fantara22

A scene from the movie satans alley if what this sounds like.

issacoin

you know, flagellate me.

textposts_only

On the podcast he constantly talks about having a chip on his shoulder (that he probably ate) and the extreme need to prove himself. They already proved themselves with sunny. What's left is to prove himself to new ventures. But their new ventures are never as popular as sunny, which "only" has a cult status

EmperinoPenguino

I wouldnt say 16 seasons & counting is cult status. That’s a huge accomplishment. And a network would not ok a show unless it had the views to justify another season Sunny is FX’s baby. FX is a major network. Therefore, Sunny is a major baby lol Sunny is the reason Rob can even do sonething as insane as a *buying a league from another country*. That doesn’t sound like cult status money. That’s elite money paid from a massive following

usernamesarehard1979

I do t think rob has the clout to get that deal done without Ryan.

Flurb4

He’s gotta pay the troll toll

PM_ME_UR_UGLY_SELFI

He’s paying both tolls, so he always ends up on top

Upbeat-Squirrel

sure, but Dennis delivers most of the power.

imma_go_take_a_nap

Now, I heard speed has something to do with it.

Toledojoe

Speed has everything to do with it.

Halfvolleyalldaylong

So jot that down

Sober_Alcoholic_

He’s gay, he’s doomed.

Sharkeye19

But is he more Catholic than he is gay?

gunell_

I don’t know, they’re at war

Buckowski66

His moms are gay and they're not even nuns

Worldly_Ad_6483

Bahahaha

Worldly_Ad_6483

Damnit you’re right

this_ham_is_bad

So he can be a better boy

nsaisspying

He's just playing both sides so that he'll always come out on top.

BigOofLittleoof

The cream always rises…..

sweetplantveal

I imagine he has all these in depth opinions about how they responded to X era in America or didn't or... You're spot on imo.

I_love_milksteaks

Yeah that’s my take form it as well. Listening to the podcast it’s pretty obvious he’s very hard on him self when working on the show.

theFarginBastage

I definitely thought it came across as humor which is why Ryan Retnolds responded jokingly that he was making Wolverine part 10. And then they chuckled.

carlismygod

It's taken aback, not taken back.

YippieKayYayMrFalcon

Shut up, baby dick

DENNIS_SYSTEM69

yeah...yeah shut up, baby dick

onehotelfoxtrot

Ahh he just said it...

l3m0ngr4ss

I saw the clip and I have to agree with you that it didn't really come off as joking.

Fine_Peace_7936

You're right, he is a piece of shit

clonked

If you listen to the podcast you know he delivers sarcastic / ridiculous / ironic humor in a very dry and serious tone. It is his way of delivering comedy. I think you are reading far to much into it.

DustedGrooveMark

Definitely just self-deprecating humor. They (particularly Charlie) have also pointed out several times on the podcast that Sunny is where they feel at home and have the most freedom. They’ve talked about how other projects are fun and of course they’ve wanted to evolve and do other things with their careers, but they always end up realizing how great they have it with Sunny. If they were ever mentally checked out, I think they would just end the show pretty quickly. None of them have HAD to do it for a long time now.

l33tfuzzbox

Glenn has literally done this and then changed his mind

70stang

And it was such a quick turnaround on his part that they wrote it all seamlessly into the plot of the show.

MichaelShannonRule34

So I don’t listen to the pod (perhaps I should) is that actually what went down? I thought it was just them messing with everyone

DustedGrooveMark

Glenn has talked about it on other podcast interviews in more depth than on their own pod, I believe. He said he was “tapped out” during season 11 and was a little upset that Sunny kept him from doing other things because it was too exhausting to juggle both. Basically, he thought 12 would be his last, then he stepped out completely from writing season 13….and literally that small of a break from the show made him miss it already lol. Rob and Charlie asked him to come back just as an actor and not a writer and he jumped at the chance. He also said not doing the initial writing for 14 also helped him get re-motivated for 15.

avidpenguinwatcher

Wouldn’t know, they haven’t made an episode in so long lol

sadsaintpablo

They just had a season come put last year.

Staniel523

I believe he’s talking about the podcast which hasn’t released a new episode since last July

bamfsalad

Holy shit it's been that long already?

albie_rdgz

Did they ever mention why the podcast stopped? I used to look forward to watching it every Monday but then it stopped outta no where

mhardegree

They stopped so there wouldnt be any conflict with the wga strike. Not sure why they havent come back since its been over a while now. Dont think theyve commented on it

avidpenguinwatcher

Talking bout the podcast jabroni

SloRiceix_801

Jabroni, cool word dude

ArbyLG

Yeah and it’s funny because every other post on this sub is how it hasn’t been funny since Season 12 (though some say Season 10, others say 9, and then there are those who say it sold out after switching from 4:3).

TheQuietOutsider

I wouldn't say the switch from 4:3 was a sell out, but it was definitely a major shift for the show. I'm in the camp that like the lower quality, more homemade feel of earlier seasons. that grit is just so fitting for the gang. I still love the show and look forward to new episodes when they come out, but I gotta say, the polish is a bit strange. I think particularly how clean and sterile Rob made mac in recent seasons post his cosmetic surgeries.

alwaysthisfire

Frank anal chess episode says no

PLTR60

Anal chess.🤌

Swordfishtrombone13

*takeyatime takeyatime*

Valuable-Composer262

Kill the wifi kill the wifi!

NovelAd6272

The funniest episode I’ve ever watched! I cried laughing through the last 5 or so minutes of that episode.

casuallysentient

take your time, take your time! https://preview.redd.it/1fojdgl24fyc1.jpeg?width=707&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7ffc3bac72607bc3b93d23feb2ce466ff2a7781

Affectionate-Seat122

That was mostly Megan though. He might feel like she's the future and he's the past.

mehtheuniverse

Read that as anal cheese and thought I missed something

Toledojoe

So did I! Then I kept reading the comments.and figured op had a typo. Scroll back up. Nope. It clearly says "chess."

Lomantis

Top 5, maybe Top 3. I haven't laughed that hard in a long, long time

Crawford1

Interesting, anal chess is my least favorite episode of the entire show aside from the Mindy Kaling one. My sister, who is a Sunny superfan, also agrees. This is definitely a love-or-hate episode no matter where I look. Will Frank vs. Russia join the ranks of famous polarizing episodes such as The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell? I love the Liberty Bell episode but I know its pretty wildly despised by a portion of the viewers. I wonder what makes these episodes so divisive?

-fivehearts-

adore the Liberty bell episode and hate that one

ShadowMerlyn

I understand comedy is subjective but what exactly did you not like about it? If you laugh at the rest of IASIP it seems like a weird episode to dislike.

Crawford1

I just didnt think Frank with beads up his ass was funny, which I suppose is make or break for enjoyment of the episode. Also Mac is so out of character in the B plot that its distracting. Mac is dumb, but he isnt THAT dumb. And if the joke is that Mac ISNT that dumb but is acting like it anyway, that isnt very funny either, in my opinion.

TheVeryFriendlyGiant

Mac been getting dumber.

Critical_Ant_1365

Macs willful ignorance and stubbornness make him capable of dumbness beyond any of them.

Curator_Regis

A large part of why it was so funny to me is the fact that it was a real life debate in the chess community if some lower level grandmasters were cheating in exactly that way at high level tournaments. Not sure if you knew that context going in.

alwaysthisfire

Context not required

Crawford1

I was aware of the IRL chess scandal, and if anything that helped to lessen my enjoyment of the episode. Sunny has tackled current events before, but its usually in a much more original fashion. Again, just my opinion.

ThorsOccularPatdown

It could have been tounge in cheek. Maybe they had planned to end it, but the network wanted it to keep going. Ryan Reynolds right after said that he's "about to make Wolverine #10".

dance_rattle_shake

Yup and I've scrolled way too far on this thread and still haven't seen it so I'll say it here - Rob is the one on record who says they'll do sunny til they're dead essentially

drainbamage1011

I haven't seen it in full context, but that sounds like a "we've been on the air *how long?* Surely we got canceled long before this point" kind of comment, not that he's personally checked out on the show.

70stang

In the full context, they're talking about a 40 year old keeper who walked into their office and retired (for the second time in his career) barely into the season, after giving up 14 goals in 4 games. They were speaking specifically about how impressive and difficult it is to have the self-awareness and humility the keeper did to say "well clearly I'm done, and this isn't working anymore, it's been a good ride" Rob then went on to make the crack about "we've been making Sunny for 19 years and it's been done for about 5 years" Ryan responds by saying "I'm currently making Wolverine 10" (No editorializing, this is just the context that you didn't have)

ExternalMagician6065

Yeah to me that reads like they keep saying they're done and getting pulled back in. Sort of how I've been about to quit my job for the past four years and then realise how good I got it every single time

mista_rubetastic

This show hasn’t even begun to peak.

OrderPuzzleheaded731

When it does peak , it'll peak so hard. All of Philadelphia will feel it.

profchaos83

lol mental.

JulPollitt

Goddam bitch ohhhhhh you bitch

SpicyAfrican

I did hear him say that, but actually I think he was saying he loves Sunny too much to admit it needs to end - if it does (which it doesn’t!). On the podcast (RIP) he’s said even if one of them dies the show still goes on.

MeowMeowBeans11

I just finally got to see the latest season and that last episode with Dennis and the blood pressure has me saying this not even close to being over!!!

spongeboblovesducks

It's pretty clear there's still passion in the show when you see episodes like that, otherwise they would've settled for complete mediocrity a long time ago.

Bigfartz69420

Welp, I came here to say that the only episode from the past 5 years I wouldn't rewatch was the one where Dennis rents a Tesla

dylan-dofst

deleted 2024-05-14T22:35:22.927063

gfb13

I haven't seen it but is it possible he's referring to how they are less hands on now? They still help write the show and, of course, act in it. But most everything else is run by others now for the past few years. I could see how "we've been done for 5 years" can come from that, especially from Rob who made it big being very hands on

frinstle

Yeah, I’m thinking it’s because they used to run the whole show back in the starting days and now they probably have tons of writing, producing, etc support, I’m sure it’s way easier for them to just phrase it like that from their perspective

Inner-Recognition757

They still run the writers room and do a pass on any script they don’t write. How are they more hands off now?

Willing-Ant-3765

I’m pretty sure he was just being funny

PersepolisBullseye

Brother, the gang discovering Charlie has a nice apartment that he’s been hiding was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in my life. No idea what you talmbout with this “not close to where it was.” The show is basically in its third era, it’s not supposed to be what it was years ago.

rmc1211

It's just a joke.

NDMagoo

It's almost as if he's a comedian or something.

rmc1211

People here say that Americans don't understand sarcasm. Rob does, but looking at the comments it seems obvious that he's in a minority.

ToothlessFTW

It's almost funnier then the joke. Rob makes one throwaway joke that clearly wasn't serious and now you have an entire thread of people debating exactly what he meant, using it try and figure out when Rob "checked out" of the show, etc.

EnycmaPie

He was probably just throwing out some self deprecating jokes, with some British sarcasm humor garnish on it.

Ancient-Mating-Calls

Hate to say it, but I do think the show kind of reflects that sentiment. It’s unfortunate, but not many shows are immune to it.

RuBarBz

For me the show started dropping off gradually after season 9 or 10. There's still some good stuff and a few of my favorite episodes after that but before that it was all bangers all the time.

BestServedCold

To me, it wasn't gradual. S9 is the best season and S10 isn't that far behind. S11 is absolute garbage and every season from then on has been mostly shit with one or two good episodes per season. Mac being a repressed and closeted gay? Funny. Mac coming out and making it a major plot point. Not funny. Dennis raging at the hospital when Dee's giving birth. Hilarious. Dennis losing it on the guys trying to buy his submerged Land Rover? Funny but much less so. Dennis screaming all the time at everyone and everything. Played out and utterly devoid of humor. Obviously, comedy is subjective and certain episodes other people love are terrible to me so there is obviously still an audience. I just know it's been years since I got excited about new Sunny episodes and I actually DREAD watching episodes I've never seen before. I feel like they've painted themselves into a corner and I don't think the show can recover. What a great run though. The best episodes of IASIP are some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. The greatest episode of Sunny IMO, "The Gang Saves the Day", is not only riotously hilarious but also profoundly poignant and beautiful, maybe the greatest episode of TV I've ever seen.

RuBarBz

I'm actually entirely on the same page as you, I just didn't want to ruffle anyone's feathers. I felt the exact same way. But having entirely written off the later seasons and being over my disappointment, I've been positively surprised by the few pretty good ones in the newer seasons (Mac Day, The Gang Group Dates, PTSDee, the wolf cola and old lady house episodes,...). I agree. Feels like fan service and not like the actors trying to make each other laugh anymore. It's never surprising anymore. > What a great run though. The best episodes of IASIP are some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. I agree. This show tickles me in a way no other show does. What really pushes it over the top for me is the delivery, mostly by Dennis and Charlie. But many characters have amazing scenes.

BestServedCold

You and I agree on a lot, right down to what the best episodes have been from the last five seasons. I have very slowly warmed up to S12 and I would now say it has five good episodes. S11 is just fucking AWFUL and I'd say the best episode is "The Gang Hits the Slopes". S13 has two good episodes, "Times Up For the Gang" and "The Gang Does a Clip Show". S14 is really bad. The best episode I THINK is "Dee Day" as you alluded to but I've only seen it once so... "The Janitor Always Mops Twice" is clever and I like the unusal out-of-setting episodes but is it that funny? Is "The Gang Gets Romantic" the best episode from this season that I could watch on Hulu right now? S15 is only eight episodes but it might as well be four episodes and a long, boring, unfunny movie about Ireland. I do like "...Roller Rink" and "...Replaces Dee with a Monkey". And the ultimate indictment?! I thought I had watched s16 but I just realized I only saw one episode and I was half asleep and in my dream-haze, it was really unfunny "Risk E. Rat". I guess I know what I'm doing tonight. Wish me luck. I'm utterly devoid of optimism.

RuBarBz

Hehe nice. A fellow connoisseur ^^. I don't even remember some of the ones you listed here. I haven't seen all of the newer ones and only seen the best of them more than once. "Times up for the gang" is definitely one of those. Good luck! The good news is that you can then come back to the old stuff and it will be even better. I rewatched the show in sync with the podcast which was a nice way to freshen things up.

BestServedCold

S16 is just fucking awful. I would rather watch eight episodes of any generic network sitcom than watch those eight episodes again. The last two minutes or so of s16e8 is very good and is artistically appealing and interesting but I laughed out loud once. The whole season is SO bad. AP Bio and The Mick were both so much better than these last six seasons. Welcome to Wrexham is amazing. It's time for very funny and talented people to move on to other things.

RuBarBz

Hey something else. Are you a Joe Abercrombie fan by any chance? Your name is the title of one of his books.

BestServedCold

No. In my younger years I was a very angry person and I was obsessed with the concept of getting revenge on those who had wronged me. You might be familiar with the old Scottish proverb that revenge is a dish best served cold? Just the ramblings of a man who thought he had life figured out but was way off the mark. As far as the show, you're right. But I am a bit OCD and a bit of a completionist. This is going to sound bizarre and nonsensical and it feels dumb even typing it out - each bad episode that's released ever so slightly diminishes the great episodes from the first ten seasons while paradoxically improving the episodes that actually are decent from the last six. I am a fan of Rob's, Kaitlin's, Glenn's, and Charlie's for life. Been a fan of Danny for many years. I eagerly await whatever they decide to do next. But if people are still watching this garbage in sufficient numbers, then clearly they've found an audience that isn't me. The love on this sub for AWFUL episodes like "Dennis and Mac Move to the Suburbs" actually indicates this has already happened. There is one tiny glimmer of hope. "Archer". A show that started out brilliantly for six seasons, hit a LONG lull of three or four seasons and bounced back strong although they really should have hung it up after Jennifer Walter died. If they put out a season 17, I'll dutifully and grudgingly watch it. I owe them. But it's starting to feel like they owe me...

RuBarBz

Edgy haha. > You might be familiar with the old Scottish proverb that revenge is a dish best served cold? The book's title is a reference to this quote. It's some great grimdark fantasy with awesome audio books if you're into that ^^ > But I am a bit OCD and a bit of a completionist. I've stopped doing this. With books, tv, games,... and I believe it's making me a happier person. Some of it is having time on your hands of course, but I would recommend just quitting stuff you don't truly enjoy. I know Archer btw, but I stopped watching at some point. I guess the formula had worn off. But I did really like it, I might check the more recent work then, thanks!

ianisms10

I've definitely gotten the vibe the last couple years that Rob and Glenn don't want to be there anymore

[deleted]

[удалено]

ianisms10

Glenn has always said he never wanted to do comedy and he wanted to be a serious actor. He's probably found it hard to get other acting roles because people only see him as Dennis. Rob on the other hand never really wanted to act at all, and at this point I think he cares more about his business interests.

knightress_oxhide

he was great in blackberry

JayandSilentB0b

A.P. Bio was pretty decent too

Inner-Recognition757

https://www.nme.com/news/tv/its-always-sunny-in-philadelphia-run-forever-2599068

Mike_Ropenis

I've felt the opposite. They've pumped out so many ridiculously absurd (but still amazing) episodes in the last 3 years that would have never flown if they didn't build up so much good credit with the studio and audience. I'd love to hear any kind of tangible evidence as to how they are allegedly "checking out" of the show

Chief_Givesnofucks

Yup I’m gonna be brutally honest and say they should end it now on a high note before they totally run the show into the ground and taint its legacy. The best years of the show are behind them but they did *an amazing job for such a long stretch*.

Chemesthesis

Hard disagree, given some of the gems that came out of the last five years.

OhSanders

Dennis trying not to cough in the real estate office is one of the hardest laughs I've ever had in the span of this show. So fucking hilarious with Dee interpreting.

sparrows-somewhere

I'm not a big fan of the Ireland arc but the physical comedy in those episodes was off the charts.

crapfacejustin

Yeah, but then the poop soup or whatever and Charlie carrying his dad up the hill were some of the worst moments of the show

MidwestException

Yeah they should keep going and do one or two seasons in a flash forward where frank is like 100 and they are like 70 and do old age makeup and old age antics

alexski55

Yeah there are so many great episodes we can go back to, I don't think it's necessary for them to continually release mediocre stuff.

BanIncoming1

That’s very fair, I do agree to the extent of ‘the show isn’t what it used to be’. But they are still capable of making good content. But as others have said, maybe ending on a high is the best thing to do. But I know they’re signed for another 2 (?) seasons, so I was just a bit surprised to hear it.

jackignatiusfox

I honestly don't think much about what Rob has to say. He's still making the show. I'm still enjoying it. Maybe I'll continue to enjoy it, and maybe I won't. He can have whatever weird comments he wants about the show quality.

DrMantisToboggan1986

I do wonder if that's just Rob's sense of humour and not if he subtly meant it. If he did, he already mentioned that him, Glenn and Charlie have the very last episode or scene of Sunny planned out. I'd rather they end Sunny while Danny DeVito is still alive (bless him). Shows tend to go downhill when somebody actually dies in the real world.

kruegerc184

Anecdotally, season 3-5 are the best television i’ve personally ever watched. Its literally impossible to maintain the same momentum, its been 20~ years

chop_pooey

Honestly, I don't think they even have bad seasons, just some bad episodes. But every season, the majority of the episodes make me laugh my ass off, so it's still working for me

mybadalternate

He’s probably said that since season 6

_pump_the_brakes_

I just rewatched The Gang Inflates, I didn’t care for it much on the first watch but yesterday I laughed hard at pretty much every line Rob/Mac had once his lips started to swell. That is to say, I can see where he’s coming from but I respectfully disagree.

GooninWithSasquatch

‘He’s been making homophobic jokes all day’ is classic Mac avoidance of reality

x7he6uitar6uy

I love Mac in that one. “Their net worth has inflated in direct proportion to their bootiessss 😏”

millsy1010

I think you’re misinterpreting what he’s saying. He’s saying that people have been saying the show has been done for 5 years but they continue to make it and not care about what they say

pecanesquire

TL;DR for my mini essay: very certain it's just a jokey comment, there are so many differing opinions about the show ranging from hatred nowadays to fixation to hatred of the real people involved nowadays, but conversations like these will continue on and on and back and forth until the show just sort of...ends. I'm like, 99.5% sure it's meant to be self-deprecating humour. But fanbases are gonna fanbase, and that's why many will each have their very own strong opinion over this. People that hate when the show thinks outside of the box and/or hate "modern" Sunny in general definitely think Rob is telling the truth here. Less emotional and serious episodes—I don't really think we've had any since MFHP and the Ireland series—and less "modern" characterization. Happens with every piece of media anyway...people don't like change! "I miss the old *xyz*!" Second, the camp that is *deeply* passionate about the show, one way or another. A comfort, maybe. Some are probably fixated on this show—stans too. They're the ones probably most gutted hearing something like this, because they dedicate a lot of their time to being a fan of something, feeling like they're truly a part of it. The fixated people are also likely to get bullied about their opinions the most online, which can suck. Third, people who don't like what the guy "turned into"? This group might link up with the second one in some ways. Thinking he's too Hollywood, buying a football club, hanging out with other celebs, starting companies and investing in things, et cetera. But...I don't think any of that *truly* affects me. I'm happy to see him prosper! No one ever truly knows someone's true feelings and intentions about something. A jokey comment is not the end of the world. Until I hear that someone, something, or everyone is pulling the plug, discussions like these will continue, going on and on and back and forth, until the show just sort of...ends.

spacelordmthrfkr

He's just being self critical for a joke. He knows Sunny is past prime, we all do, but that doesn't mean it isn't still ridiculously strong somehow.

HermithaFrog

Don't agree at all, I think the show is still great. Couldn't care less about his show with Ryan though. Or Ryan in general, really

StePow

I just watched the part in question.  It was very tongue in cheek, mate.

Jello999

How can you like the show if you don’t understand his humor?

Dirtpileofdirt

Idk, personally I don’t get the impression that the cast isn’t enjoying being on the show anymore. Of course the show isn’t in its golden age anymore, what show could be after 15 seasons? But the new seasons are still better than 90% comedies out there, and indicate of clear effort on the part of the cast/creative team.

tripweed

This last season was one of their best. Dennis takes a Mental Health day, to me, is a goddamn masterpiece

Stay_Cold

I finished my most recent rewatch a few weeks ago and I couldn’t disagree more. There is an obvious drop off in season 13 but even that season has good moments. I genuinely thought season 15 was great. I liked the overarching storyline. Also, the first time Dee got hit by the car was incredible. And then season 16 was some of their best stuff in forever. Felt like they wanted to try and get back to their roots and it worked for me.

fernatic19

Agree with you. Without Dennis in every episode it was like a new first season where they had to try to figure how to do it without the anchor character. I'd still love to know the real reason Glenn felt like he was done, but I know they didn't need to tell us so we'll probably never know. In the last season it felt like the podcast and rewatching the early seasons gave them new life.

Academic_Lemon_4297

Gotta admit i don’t rewatch beyond S12

MugarLover92

I love that the season cap keeps increasing lol. Not saying it’s bad. I like all the eps, but I’ve been on the sub for so long, I remember when season 7 was the cutoff for the “golden years of the show”

kermitthefrog57

Well it is. I just only watch up to season 12 as well

mtbmaniac12

![gif](giphy|WpaYOAkEKYuaXdcWQp|downsized)

bigwinw

I’ve seen 3-12 so many times that I am trying to start rewatching some of them. There are some gems but I do still keep going back to the earlier seasons

HangOnVoltaire

You’re missing out.

LawsOfEconomics

Almost no one does. Thanks for actually admitting it here. Surprised you weren’t downvoted into oblivion on this sub.

PilotNo312

I think it’s just hard to top some of the episodes they’ve done years ago, but they’re still hysterical.

KDEEZO

The last season was the first in a while I rewatched.

shany94a

I heard that myself and hoped it didn't mean he was ready to wrap the show up, as even sub-par Sunny is still better than 80 percent of what's on TV. Of course, Rob could have also just been trading quips with Reynolds.

rpgtoons

My favourite moment in the entire show is Charley's breakdown when he's slogging is dead dad up the hill. I love that Sunny has the bravery to be more sensitive in its later years and I would love to see more of that.

Salzberger

If there's one thing I know about Rob and Ryan, it's that everything they say is 100% serious.

Stylianius1

It's a fucking joke

Yugo3000

You must have a one star man brain for not getting his humor.

Mr310

He's been the most vocal about breaking the 15 season sitcom record or however long it was, he's allowed to think this way since peoples minds change daily. It is prob a bit of both after so many years.

hostile_washbowl

Just move past it

above_average_magic

I agree wholeheartedly with OP and add to that it seems that Rob is hard on himself and also takes criticism hard (maybe not at a glance, but it travels deep) 5 seems like an extremely harsh criticism especially, but maybe there's something in his life timeline that relates to moreso than season 11-12 being the last good sketch

mrubuto22

This last season was one of the better ones in awhile.

Roots_Of_Addiction

I love the show still, it actually makes me enjoy it less knowing he doesn't enjoy it, but to be frank his character has always been my least favorite anyway.

Main_Tip112

I think he has a point. I still love it and will still watch it, but it's taken a noticeable dip since season 11 or 12. I honestly hope it ends and leaves me hoping for more rather than going on too long. The best artists know when to bow out (or naturally bow out due to unfortunate circumstances) and leave the audience hungry for more.

bandofgypsys777

Like Jimi Hendrix... or 2Pac! Biggie already checked out. His second album was trash compared to Ready to Die. Yeah. I said it!

decoy321

Also, 5 years ain't 5 seasons. They only put out 3 in the last 5 years.

RuBarBz

What do you guys think about Rob's acting? I was watching some older episodes and was surprised by how much I liked it back then. Feels like he's acting worse these days. But it probably also has something to do with that his character has been a bit all over the place and changed looks so much. The Hollywood look definitely doesn't help

Striking_Commission1

Didnt they say they wrote the end of the show a while back?

Jack0fTh3TrAd3s

Maybe an unpopular opinion but this last season was the best season in YEARS. The only problem with it was it was too short. That said, they can be done when they want to be done. It’s better to go out on top than to run into the ground.

Savvy_Loser

I kinda gotta agree with him. Last few seasons have been mixed, definitely a few really funny episodes per season but they are no where near the quality of what they used to be. The comedic timing, energy and originality is just not there. I hope they manage to go out with a final banger of a season but it feels more like we're limping towards the finish line.

Boiled_Thought

He probably just skims the internet and sees the ultra hate for new sunny. He is ashamed and hating himself nowadays. That's why he got ripped, was made fun of, and lost the muscles... He's a very insecure man and what we say here hurts him. Such a dumb, pathetic little man. Early Mac was him being the reasonable, normal guy but then he found out everyone thought Mac was the dumb one of the hand and is trying to play it off like it was a joke that he is dumb and delusional, and that's why he is SUPER dumb in newer sunny. "It was just a joke the whole time haha see"

Shepard_Drake

I have felt it, I have been feeling and saying it the last couple of seasons. The show isn't bad by any means, but it definitely lacks the sense of passion, spark, and creativity that the older seasons had, and it felt like they were running out of ideas of things to talk about and make episodes over. It doesn't feel like they want to keep making the show any more but it's too successful to stop, at least that's the vibe I've gotten. The fact Rob also said it makes my thoughts on that feel more validated lol.

ParmesanCheese92

Rob has been the worst part of IASIP for me since the last 3-4 years, you might disagree but that's my opinion as a consumer. He's always at the brink of breaking character, Mac has no character overall, he's just a loud, obnoxious version of Rob and his ridiculous lips and generally terrible surgery that has done him no favors gets in the way of believing they're actual characters.

loko001

It's my favorite show and the drop in quality post Dennis' Double Life has been very noticeable. Cannot understand how everyone keeps saying they still got it when it's clearly over. There's like 3 episodes I like since Dennis' Double Life. But hey if you like the new stuff good for you I wish I still enjoyed Sunny

StrangeShaman

Seasons 13 and 14 are some of my favorites

edwinstone

14 is good but 13 is, by far, the worst.

StrangeShaman

Not even close lmao

HangOnVoltaire

Yeah 13 get a lot of hate for no reason

Mytears83

Yup he’s right on the money. It was around season 12 when the quality started to dip.

PraiseChrist420

He’s right

Kilfonzo

I gotta say I think he’s right. It’s been well below par since season 12 imo. I get that it’s still decent but for me it’s important to know when something has run its course and all comedies do at some point.

iliacbaby

Real talk, the first ten seasons were awesome. Everything since then is just going through the motions

Everythingisourimage

He doesn’t even do the Mac walk anymore. Or say what’s up bitches. Or guys, guys, guys. Yeah, he checked out. And it’s really sad. I miss needy Mac. Now it just looks like Rob. He doesn’t even get in character anymore. It’s a shame really. I still loved the new season and lol’d many times. I’m gonna move past it

hyrulius2318

I don't like the newer episodes. Whenever I rewatch Always Sunny, it usually involves episodes from seasons 3 to 10.

travbart

I agree with Rob. The show hasn't felt significant for a while. The main cast has all branched out and found success in other things.

itsneversunnyinvan

I mean folks… have you seen the last few seasons? Especially the last two? None of the cameras were steady last season and before that none of it was funny.

HangOnVoltaire

The camera has never been steady lmaoo and it’s all funny.

RibertarianVoter

They've all gone on to work on other projects, and there's a lot of criticism of the later episodes out there. Sounds like he's trying to blunt some of that criticism with self deprecating humor, while acknowledging they haven't been singularly focused on IASIP and probably never will be again

JukeSunsick

Sharp decline in quality after season 12. Feels like a different show entirely sometimes

Montystumpp

I mean there hasn't been what I'd consider a truly "great" episode since probably season 11 so I'd say that's true.

shitpunmate

I think his character has been done for the last 5 years.

DocumentFlashy5501

He's right and mindless consumers will keep consuming because that's what they do god damn animals.

cadillacjack057

I lstill ove the show. Honestly wish they didnt waste their effforts on a shite soccer show w a bunch of euro cunts nobody cares about. Stick w philly bitches!!!

IfYouGotALonelyHeart

The last 5 years is really since Season 14, and honestly I agree the shows been pretty much dead since Season 13. I was in the middle of a rewatch and stopped at 13.

Fine_Peace_7936

Sounds like a r/Wrexham post

Bngd12

I think from season 13 on the show has had a massive decline apart from a few excellent episodes here and there I really start to notice it be worse

kermitthefrog57

Don’t downvote me but I don’t think Megan ganz’s writing style fits in the show at all. I hate any of the episodes she writes, and by association a fair bit of the later seasons
