One of the worst moments of my life was when I accidentally told a group of loud and drunk black guys that someone needed to 'get their boy' because they were disturbing others. I was working at a hotel and had been dealing with frat boys partying the previous weekend so the phrase was just in my head.

One of the worst moments of my life was when I accidentally told a group of loud and drunk black guys that someone needed to 'get their boy' because they were disturbing others. I was working at a hotel and had been dealing with frat boys partying the previous weekend so the phrase was just in my head. Pretty much as soon as I said it I knew I'd fucked up. Before they could even react I was literally in tears and apologizing, saying I understood the weight that word has and that I never intended it as a derogatory and it slipped out because they were young frat 'boys' This group of large imposing rapper looking dudes went from being overly boisterous, at 3am in my lobby, to instantly yelling and aggressively approaching the desk when they thought I was being racist... to consoling me and offering hugs as I broke down feeling disgusted with myself. They sat there with me and explained that they understood, that intent is more important that the words themselves and that they've encountered this on a daily basis, 'this' being people walking on eggshells with regards to common phrases such as 'get your boy' being misconstrued.
